Nexus 4 led flash won't turn on - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I try and take a pic with the Camera app the flash simply will not turn off and it will not allow me to take a photo.
My original Nexus 4 had this issue. This is a replacement device from Google. Its doing the same thing. Any suggestions?

The led flash turns on, but what causes it to not turn off and not allow me to take a picture under low light with multiple people? Should I turn auto flash off and leave it on always flash?

it only turns off when you exit the app?, i dont think camera auto/on setting will do work but try it. how long have you had the device?, i would factory reset and try it then rma it if not fixed

I did an rma on this already. I had the Nexus 4 since it came out. I have this 2nd one from the rma for over a month now.
It only turns off when I exit under the conditions I mentioned. Otherwise it works fine.

screen won't timeout

I have a i9020A and my screen will not time out. I have it set to 15 sec, even installed screebl and set it to 15 sec....no matter what i do the screen won't turn off unless i press the power button......tried multiple reboots and no fix....how do i fix this? this is becoming a real pain
Try doing a factory reset. I had the same problem. It was not the first factory reset that solved it but the second one. Make sure you do not install the apps immediately. After the facotory reset use it for a day or two and observe. Then install the apps one by one. I think some apps cause this problem.

Screen won't turn on!

I got my Nexus 7, and it's beautiful. I turned it on and plugged it in, and the nexus logo appeared, super-dark. Then the screen went blank and the nexus logo came back, brighter...and vanished. My computer was still detecting it and even lets me load files, but it won't show anything on the screen! When I hard reboot it, I get the same thing; dark Nexus logo, bright Nexus logo, nothing, computer still 'sees' it.
What am I doing wrong?!
I have the same problem. I've been charging it for over an hour. I press the power button, google logo shows up, goes dark then Nexus logo appears for 2-3 seconds. Nothing after that, I connected it to the computer and it recognized it and I can transfer files.
Did you guys try to unlock the bootloader and install CWM? Same thing happened to me afterwards. Turns out the only way i could get it to work was to flash superboot then cwm.
It looks like something causes the backlight to turn completely off while it's booting. Otherwise mine works perfectly.

It happened to me before I tried to root it, so it's not something caused by a root attempt.

Weird thing, I try the flashlight trick and I could see the Welcome screen. I press the triangle icon and it took me to pick a wifi network, after that i turn of the flashlight off and press the power button,Press it again and the screen came back to life. I think its the light sensor, disable the automatic feature. Or try and put it on bright light and see if the screen comes to life. If you also go into the the display menu and you messed with the manual control below halfways the screen shuts off completely. Weird.
The flashlight trick worked for me!
Does your nexus work now? I think its the light sensor set on automatic
I'm having the same issue with the Nexus 7 I just picked up today, however, even with shining a really bright flashlight on it, I still can't see enough to get past the setup. Is there any other way around this, or is it back to the shop?
Guys its the auto screen brightness!! Take it to somewhere where its really light out and it'll turn on. Its something weird going on with auto brightness. The lowest it goes is turning off ur screen eventually. Just turn automatic off

[Q] Screen Timeout 2 Second MaDnEsS...

I got my 32GB AT&T Galaxy s4 one week ago today. Had to make an 8 hour road trip to get one but I would say it was very much worth it. I am having this maddening problem where a couple times a day the Display screen timeout keeps re-setting itself to (2 seconds) Unbelievably frustrating considering I can barely get the screen unlocked in 2 seconds and if I blink I have to do it all over again.
But wait, don't walk away just yet, there's more! I have already factory reset 3 stinking times trying to get to the bottom of this and when I woke up this morning it was back to (2 second). Furthermore it shows (2 seconds) in brackets like that so I assumed this was the default value but after checking just now while I was typing this post I noticed after changing it back to my preferred 30 seconds that the 2 second option vanishes. I'll snap a screenshot next time this happens.
Anybody else seen or heard of this problem? I assumed everybodys was doing this until I started searching and found 0 others with the problem. Is my phone The Chosen One?
Yes, i have it also and i found some forums where they discuss same problem, but no solution . Let's think what we have in common..
I have this app called Light Flow, do you?
Also which things you have on?
I have nfc, snart view, smart scroll, air view, air gesture

Absolutely have Light Flow. I never leave home without it.
NFC. Yes
Smart View. No
Smart Scroll. No
Air View. Yes
Air Gesture. Yes.
I thought for sure it must be Smart Stay malfunctioning but I don't even use that.
maybe it has something to do with Light Flow?? this app caused weird bugs sometimes...
wanna try to turn it off for a while and let me know if it helps?

Work around
Guys, Did yo get this sorted? I had exactly the same problem which has been driving me mad but managed to sort a workaround which works perfectly. Let me know if this wasn't sorted and I'll post it.
I turned off "Power Saving" mode and it hasn't done it since.
EDIT: Nevermind... just had to give it more time.

Would you kindly post the workaround? I'm out of ideas at this point.
You all have LightFlow. LightFlow causes other odd issues with Accessibility settings with the S4. Get rid of it and for now use Light Manager. Its much better IMO because it doesn't need to be activated in Accessibility settings, it just works.
Well, I didn't have power saving on and was still getting the problem. I uninstalled light flow and still had the problem. To resolve this for now I use an app called tasker, I had it already because it is a very cool app anyway but once installed if you don't have it just create a rule to deal with the time out issue. My rule for example went like this.
If the time is between 00.01 and 23.59 then set display timeout to 2 minutes. This fixed the problem for me.
In fact you could create other rules to do the same but this does it nicely.

I set my rule to set the display timeout every time the display is turned on. I couldn't make it work the way you did it. I think I need more expertise.
Thanks again.
I haven't seen this issue again since starting this thread. Go figure. I haven't changed anything at all either. Still using lightflow in its entirety just like I was before and never changed anything else that I can recall. Weird.
Ok, I think I have this issue figured out. Here's how I resolved it:
1. Open Light Flow
2. Open Settings
3. Scroll all the way down to the section "Additional LEDs found"
4. Deselect "lcd-backlight control' and exit
I have the same exact problem.. Tried everything but with no luck!! Any one figured it out!??

Just to let you guys know, i was able to fix this problem but with a sacrifice.. I reset my phone to factory settings & reinstalled all apps except for Light Flow (The problem did arise after i installed it) and now the screen times out perfectly with the duration i set. :good:
I just hope Light Flow fix this issue soon because i got used to the LED lights indications,, they were very useful.
Solution (I hope)
It's light flow's turn on screen option. They're patching it in the next update, but for now all you have to do is uncheck switch screen on in the notifications.
I tried this tonight. Will post back confirmation from the link
I just registered so I can't post the link to the forum I found it on.
Screen timeout
So I have a Galaxy s4 and started having this same issue with my phone. I would set the timeout for 3 minutes but it would reset back to 0 after so long. I dont have that application you all are talking about. I did root my phone which I do not think matters.
Essentially there are 2 spots to change the screen timeout I found.
My device>Display>Screen timeout
and
My device>Accessibility>Screen timeout (which was set to 0 even though the other was set)
I will let you know if this resolves the screen timeout issue for me.
Thanks

I also was having the same 2 second screen problem and found the unchecking the (turn on screen) to (Switch the screen on for 5 seconds when the notification arrives) in each of the notifications in Light flow has solved my problem. It seems that it was the cause of resetting the screen time out to 2 seconds.
Can someone else try this and confirm that this is the cause???

[Q] Screen won't turn off

For some reason my screen won't shut off when I press the power button or by itself after any amount of time. I made sure all of the settings were set right that might keep it on. I know it's not hardware damage because I've pretty much never dropped it or handled it hard. The power button still works because it will get the turn off, restart, etc screen to go. Any idea how to fix it? I already did a factory reset.

Download wakelock detector and see which app is keeping your screen on.
Dialed that number, the dimming worked, but the sleep button didn't do anything. I'll try that app out and see what it says.
In my understanding *#0*# dialing is for hardware check, if sleep is not working from there means it has nothing to do with any app & better to take to service centre.

It didn't do it until after I tried to change my boot screen. Know if that would do anything? No boot animations go off besides the galaxy note 3 one (no Tmobile or samsung animation, and no shut off animation). I also rooted it so would they still help me even though the knox counter is 0x1?
Any help? Using the wakelock app it says that system manager application is used a lot more than anything else. Not sure what it does.

Try to flash complete stock ROM & clear Data & Catch before & after flashing from recovery may HELP.
That fixed it. I'm not sure why I didn't already try that since it seems kinda obvious. Don't know what made it do that though. Do you happen to know if modifying the boot animations can mess other things up?
Mine its not rooted still stock and all of the sudden started acting up with the screen ....i did the *# test and when i went to sleep it went straight to the lock screen ...any idea what could cause it

Mine does this every time I reboot my phone. I have to press and hold the home key, pick the pie chart, pick RAM and pick "Clear Memory". Then it's fine til the next time I reboot.
I had my note 3 with the same problem and solved it recovering the original system/media/bootsamsung*.qmg files.
to solve the problem plug the charger and unplug it immediately and plug it back in again. This is also the reason why the problem is caused. So doing it again will solve the problem.

Anybody else having issues connecting the 360 camera module

So I just got my 360 camera and when I go to attach the mod to the phone it powers on and the fan runs but it doesn't launch the camera app and the light on the camera does not changed from blue to green to acknowledge a successful connection. Are there anybody else with this issue? And what could be a fix for it?

Probably need to update the Camera app at the play store.
Essential 360 camera not working
I have also not been able to get mine to work. Camera app is up to date. The first essential is update has been installed. I did see a prompt to "update 360 camera" the progress bar got 80% and then the update failed and told me to reattach the camera. But the camera was attached and phone was still the entire time. I restarted the phone and saw the blue light go green once. The 369 interface appeared when I manually opened the camera app but the UI was non-functional. I believe there is either a production issue with the hardware connection or there is a software issue with detecting and triggering the app. ??

Yes, I wasn't even able to get the camera to tell me to update. It just updated through the normal Play store process. I have yet to be able to get the green light. It just stays blue. How long does it take for your module to turn green? I agree, it has to be something wrong with the software or these modules. I hope its not the phone as it seem that we are in the minority here.

Fully updated but still no luck. Just sits there with the fan running and the blue light.
I noticed this problem when I have another camera set as default.
So I just have to make sure to unlock the phone before I attach the camera, other wise it'll just be a black screen.
Mine not working either. Tried everything. Have had a support ticket pending for a week now
I had the same issue before to see that my back protection was the issue. Without the protection everything work like a charm.
Back is naked for me and still happens
It's the Essential support answer:
1- Ensure you are connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or Cellular data.
2- Make sure your Home screen is on and visible.
3- Connect the camera to the pins of the back of the phone (LED should turn blue).
4- The camera app will open automatically and advise an update is required (Make sure you leave camera app open).
5-Drag down notification bar from the top and there should be an update available to install.
6- Wait until LED turns green (this may take a few minutes to complete) – if it doesn’t turn green after update, remove and re-add.
7- If still not connecting, restart phone and try process again.
The same answer to everybody i guess.
You need to ensure is that pins line up. The camera will snap on and look fine even when off by 1/4 inch.

Might help. I tried my brother's camera on my phone and it didn't work but my cam worked on his so yours might do the same.
I'm also having this issue. Support hasn't been able to figure anything out so I went to Best Buy and tried my 360 camera on their stock device. It worked instantly.
I even factory reset my phone to ensure I had no 3rd party software conflicting and my 360 camera doesn't work with my phone. I'm now working with Essential support on this.
I keep getting update failed. Won't update the camera...
Fixed essential 360 camera issue
It took me about 6 tries and I had to restart the phone with the camera plugged in in order to get it to detect the camera. Then I would look for the detected camera icon on the top left (looks like the essential logo) and then I would check to see if I got the camera update notification. (Look in notifications and it'll have a prompt which says to click to update) I then tried the update 3 times with the camera app open (and being in the camera app while I swiped down and clicked the notification), note that you need to disconnect and reconnect the camera when the update fails. I then closed the camera app and tried the update prompt from the notifications and it finally went through!
Another thing that I did was to long press the camera app icon and then drag the icon to the top where it says more Info (and the other option is to delete or uninstall) and then click force stop. I then reconnected the camera and it was then able to be detected (in order for me to try the update)
Looks like persistence is the key to fixing this. It's annoying but it's an awesome 360 camera. Once the update worked, I still had to reboot once in order for
It to detect. Buggy but good.
So mine will turn the fan on and the light will go from blue to green. The camera UI will open automatically but it will sit and think for as long as I let it sit. Last time was 5 minutes.
