Can't get Beautiful Widgets to work - 7" Kindle Fire HD General

So I installed Widget app picker so I can choose widgets on my KFHD. But I can't get Beautiful Widgets to work. It always closes. I've tried searching for the answer. I apologize if there's already a topic on this. I've seen screenshots of others getting it to work. Need help! Thanks in advance

Where did you install? Did you sideload it?

I also couldn't get beautiful widgets to work. I think it's because of the weather additions to the widgets, which don't seem to work properly with the kindle

Cmonsta,
There is a known problem with Beautiful Widgets and the Kindle Fire HD. We currently have an email out to the
developer Levelup Studio: http://support.levelupstudio.com/, as well as a post in the Knowledgeable. We will
post the solution as soon as they respond.

Cmonsta,
Look what I found on our storage array? Beautiful Widgets V4.10.2 this is an older version:
<<Cmonsta PM us for the link - Leflou has distributed this version at N/C but the WILL NOT
support version 4.10.2.>>
Before you attempt to install this version be sure to remove the new version, reboot
then install this version. When the developer responds with a fix I will post it to this

Hi everyone, not sure if i am being completly stupid here, but when i unzip the zip file to desktop ready to transfer to KFHD, i was looking for the .apk expension, but i get 3 or 4 folders and no .apk file?- am i missing something, or just being a noob

OK, I'm not trying to start anything or be a jerk. That is definitely not my intention. However, because Beautiful Widgets is a paid app/widget is it right to post it here? I'm just curious whether this is a violation of some sort. If the makers of the app/widget have given permission I'll shut my mouth and move on. I understand that the version posted is an older version but in all of my searching, even older version of BW were not free.
Again, I'm just asking a question. I'm not trying to start anything.
Thanks,
Ray

Reborn627 (Ray),
This was distributed to us through Leflou at Levelup Studio, she stated "since this is an unsupported version, it is OK to
post the answer to your client but be aware we no longer support this version, so if there is a problem, we will not be
able to help..." Do not worry Reborn627, I am extremely cautious regarding distributing software and since I can
communicate with Cmonsta through PM, I will remove the post just to keep everyone happy.:good:

Cmonsta,
I know this has been a long time but last night the solution came to us!:good: If you have a Kindle Fire 2 or HD with Root permissions please follow these steps to get the latest version of Beautiful Widgets to work on the Kindle Fire HD Series or Kindle Fire 2:
Step 1: Install a Beautiful Widgets license by using Google Play Store - Search for Beautiful Widgets and select Beautiful Widgets from Levelup Studio (pay attention to the logo, we will use this in the next step) select Install, then Accept & download - wait for the package to install
Step 2: Using either ES File Explorer or Root Explorer, navigate to /data/app folder, find the icon that matches the above install. The icon will be named something like: com.levelup.beautifulwidgets or com.levelup.beautifulwidgets.apk - please long press on the icon named com.levelup.beautifulwidgets.apk (may have a slightly different name on your kindle) select Move. Next Move com.levelup.beautifulwidgets.apk to /system/app
Step 3: Next find com.levelup.beautifulwidgets.apk in system/app folder. Long press on com.levelup.beautifulwidgets.apk and select Permissions on Root Explorer or Properties on ES File Explorer. Change the Permissions to User: Read Write Group: Read and Others: Read
Step 4: Reboot the Kindle
Step 5: Add a Beautiful Widget - the service no longer crashes

Thanks!

[Q] Can someone help me please?

Hello all. I have been searching and searching for the app called Reader's Hub. I have a US Version Sprint Tab that I just got yesterday. I found, what I believe to be two files, the Reading Hub.apk and Zinio_pressdisplay.rar. I haven't downloaded them yet because I don't know if they are the current version, and I don't know what to do with the files once I have downloaded them (where to put them, etc). Can someone please help me? I really want this App. Thanks.
There are a number of apk installers in tje market. Point it at the apk and click the option in settings to download from unknown sources.
There are also file mgrs in the market to unzip the rar file.
Cant help with versions but the apk installer may tell you that.

Thanks so much for responding. Can you tell me exactly how to do it? I installed an APK installer and the Andro Zip app. When I opened the APK installer it mentioned something about the SD card, which came with the tab. Do I do everything on the tablet itself?

You have at least given me a head start. But Here's what I have done so far;
1. I have downloaded the readers hub file and have extracted it. I tried to download the zinio file, but for some reason it wouldn't fully download saying the file is not supported or something of the sort. It was in .rar.
2. I installed Root explorer, apk installer, and Andro Zip.
3. I tried copying the extracted file to the system/apps folder, but it wont let me. Either the entire folder, or the apk files one by one.
Am I missing anything, or did I skip a step?

Does this work for the US Galaxy Tab?
For writing something into /system/app directory you need to have your Tab rooted. This will allow you to mount this directory as R(ead)/W(rite). Initially it should opened in Read/Only. Then you will be able to transfer your system app into the installation directory. After you finish copying you will see Readers Hub into the App Drawer.
You might need to have Zinio and Kobo because the Readers Hub is just a Manager of content.
Good luck
P.S. For rooting I would recommend z4root that can be installed from the creator's web page.

Okay, now I understand. That's my problem, while I have the Kobo and the press reader, I couldn't download the zinio app because my tab kept saying content not supported. I have andro zip, explorer, and apk installer installed, so I don't know why it wouldn't install it on my tab. Can you tell me how to root it, or give me a link to a thread that shows how to root it? I saw a thread recently, but it was for the Euro version and I have the US Sprint version.
Go to XDA top left and follow this directories:
* Home
* Android Development and Hacking
* Android Apps and Games
* [APP] z4root
you will find z4root.1.3.0.apk in the first post.
Keep in mind that ReadersHub was not released in US and might not have full functionality in the US.

It looks like Z4root has been removed. Is there another simple way to root?
No, it is still in the same place. I just downloaded it.
Another way is manual but it requires certain skills.
Franckly, if your only goal is to get ReadersHub rooting is hardly justified.
I would find substitution. Besides Kobo is not the best ereader. Of course, it depends on your goals and where do you get content.
I've found very sofisticated ebook reader called Moon+ Reader Pro. This one can even scroll for you. In addition it can do read aloud using either default TTS voice or purchased ones. It is very usable.

Okay. I wanted it to be able to read magazines as well, since for some reason, Nook isn't offering the magazines in their reader. Can you recommend a good app for magazines?
Magazine subscriptions are available on Kindle although limited selecetion. Another app called Issuu offers access to magazines but I have not tried it. Some magazines/publishers may offer applications giving access to their materials.
I have such for NY Times and Financial Times, for example.
Google is supposed to introduce soon its Newsstand that will cover printed press.
Zinio so far is only for Apple products and I believe on the Tab in Europe. They promised to release it in the US shortly.

I went ahead and rooted my tab after reading some more of the features. I still cannot copy files to my system/app directory. I see the SD card is r/w but I can't seem to figure out how to change the system/app to write.

[Q] [ROM][09/10/11] Bulletproof MIUI :: 1.9.9 :: EXT4/VIRTUOUS OC DAEMON

I want to try this ROM, but in the past when installing MIUI, I have lost superuser.
The instructions are:
1.9.9: Mediafire - Multiupload
md5: BFB94E2DE623B0D27DA6B8A142FFE207
Superuser Permissions need to be enabled via the Superuser application.
Open the app, then hit 'menu', then settings, and enable root permissions. (Superuser is found in Tools folder by default).
But when I open the superuser app either prior or after installing, I find no option to "enable root permissions". Could someone please walk me through this.
Thank you.
Nevermind. I found the answer in another forum. The tools folder is actually a folder on the homescreen which contains the superuser icon

I tried it out for like a week or two but then went back to Cyanogenmod. I've been using it for I'd say more than 2 months and I haven't had the urge to change it to something else. Which frankly surprises me since I tend to get bored with stuff like that. I'm one of those people that change their wallpaper to a completely different one every week.

Keep Wallpaper From Changing Without ADB

First I give all credit to rooobbbbb for finding the file, over on his thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362543
I really don't know a lot about android, but through my brief experience with the fire and root explorer I figured out how to keep the wallpaper from changing without a computer and ADB. Here are the steps:
1) You need root access. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348830
2) Download root explorer or similar program that allows the changing of file permissions.
3) Change wallpaper to desired choice.
4) Run said program and go to /data/data/com.android.settings/files
5) In this folder is a file called wallpaper. Change the permissions on wallpaper to have no write access.
6) You can now change the wallpaper from Go Launcher EX or similar program to the same type of wallpaper. Same limitation of having to undo and redo process for different type of wallpaper.
very awesome. thank you for the info works perfectly.

This thread was a pretty shameless re-post which has caused pointless confusion. There is an existing thread which contains all of the information you seek:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362543
I posted both the results from the CL using the ADB method, AND what you can expect to see when using the Root Explorer method. Please check there, specifically Post #35. In the CL output you will see the permissions default = 755.
I haven't had any issues changing wallpaper using this thread's method, live or static.

Poor choice of words on my part. I was simply trying to avoid duplication of effort and if nothing else, encourage people to use the built-in search functionality (located at the top right of the page). I've frequented this site for a while now, and I'd be hard pressed to recall a time when a little research failed to find me the answer I was looking for.
Don't mind me. Carry on.

Google Play Apps

Hey guys. So I managed to root my Kindle Fire version 7.2.3. I Installed the Android Market and upgraded to Google Play Store. I started downloading apps, like Firefox and Opera, games, etc. Now, when I go to the apps menu on my Kindle, I only see the apps downloaded from the Amazon appstore... Opera, Firefox and the other games are nowhere to be seen... If I drag down the settings, I can see in my notifications that the apps were installed, and I can launch them from there, but that's it.. I can also launch them from ES FIle Explorer, but that's annoying... How can I make it so that all the content downloaded from the gplay store appears in the app section of my kindle?
Install a different launcher like Apex, Go Launcher, Nova etc. It will then look and feel like a normal android device, and you will see all your apps.

Thanks for replying. Sorry but I'm a noob with this... I downloaded Go Launcher from the gplay store and I can't see it or launch it because of the problem I mentioned above... If I get to launch it what do I do with it?
No problem dude. Download the .apk file (google it) for Go Launcher and put in the system/app folder. If it's a .zip, rename it to .apk then reboot your Kindle and it will load upon reboot. Try it out and see what happens. Good luck.

Couple things to try here. If Go Launcher is installed, you should press the home button and a dialog box should pop up asking you which launcher you want to use. Select Go Launcher. If that doesn't work, download an app from the market called Home Switcher that allows you to select which launcher you want to use. If you don't see Go Launcher in there, then it's not installed. Keep trying, you will get it.

Take the attached files, download them to your desktop.
1) Plug your Kindle into USB
2) Using Windows Explorer, move GO_Launcher_HD.apk and GO_Launcher_EX_3_19_1.apk to /Kindle/Download
2) Now go to your Kindle. Open ES File Explorer go to Settings. In Settings > Other Settings is Root Settings. Select Root Settings, check all options.
3) Be sure to "Allow" Root
4) Now using ES File Explorer move /sdcard/GO_Launcher_HD.apk to /system/app/GO_Launcher_HD.apk and move /sdcard/GO_Launcher_EX_3_19_1.apk to /system/app/GO_Launcher_EX_3_19_1.apk - Install both apk's
5) Change the permissions (by long pressing each apk) on GO_Launcher_EX_3_19_1.apk and GO_Launcher_EX_3_19_1.apk to User: Read Write Group: Read Others: Read
6) Reboot the Kindle. When it reboots you should see "Kindle is upgrading", then you will be given the option to select a Launcher: Home (Stock Kindle Launcher), Go Launcher EX, or Go Launcher HD
Try them both, see which one you like, then when you are ready, click on the "Home" button to make one of them your new "Default" launcher.

No problem, go into the Apps container where all the apps are stored, scroll through then until you see "Home". Click on "Home" (Not the picture of the house) and wala, you are back to the old Kindle menu allowing you to access all your old /new goodies.
When you are done, click on the picture of the house and you can get back to Go Launcher.
If you install Google Music this app automatically will sync with the Amazon Music. Maybe the next Play Movies will sync with Amazon Movies, only time will tell.

Cannot get widgets to work (ADW Launcher)

I cant for the life of me get any widgets to work on my rooted kindle.
I have tried to download the apks manually and then move them to system/apps and even change the permissions.
But when i try to add the widgets via ADW nothing happens, no widgets pops up and the screen goes back to the homescreen.
help would be much appretiated
Wipe the data for adw launcher and try again..
If the problem persists then reinstall your rom.

yokone1,
We have seen this a number of times on both Go Launcher and ADW Launcher. This is a sure fix.
Download the attached file named AppWidgetPicker-1.2.3.apk copy it to /system/app then change
the permissions to Owner: Read Write, Group: Read, Others: Read. Do Not install the apk, just
move it and change the permissions. Next reboot, wait for the Kindle to upgrade and test Widgets.
Let me know if this solves your issue.
This worked perfectly, thank you so much! =)

I am trying to do just this and can not for the life of me get it into that App folder. I can copy it to my device into other folders, and when I then try to move it using ES File I get the notice can not move file. I am on a Mac and use Android file transfer but that can not get me directly to the system file... or I haven't yet figure out how. Can you help guide me?
P.S. I have also tried transferring directly via AirDroid and get a failed notice when trying to trf to system/app

Heather_A,
The folder /system/app is a secured folder, you need Root access to mount the folder:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069117
If you have Root, you need to use either ES File Explorer or Root Explorer in Root Mode.
In ES File Explorer, you need to go into the Settings Menu, next the Root Settings Menu.
Click on all the options in Root Settings. Be sure to Allow the Pop up Superuser request.
Once you have Root, then look at the VERY TOP Left of ES File Explorer where it says Local.
Look to the Right of Local, it probably says /sdcard/Download. If this is the case, you need
to click on the Up twice until you see Local /. You are now at Root, from here you will click
on /system - Local now shows /system, next click on app, now you are at /system/app.
Does this help? Since you are working with the /system/app folder, it is critical to backup
the Kindle. Here is software that automates the Backup Process: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2096888

Hey guys,
i did not root my kindle fire. I can use the ADW Launcher, but i cant use widgets. Nothing pops up after i press the widget button. So i installed the AppWidgetPicker. Now i can choose the icon and after that i can see all the widgets. Perfect i thought!
But when i try to choose a widget it tells me "widgetPicker closed" and nothing happens.
Is there anyone who can help me with this problem?:victory:

Root your device and your problem will be solved. There's almost no risk if you follow the instructions thoroughly

Thanks!
Another fabulously useful nugget of info on XDA-developers. Thanks so much. It is things like this that make that patronising and unfunny XDA sign-up video almost worth watching!
I'm having what sounds like the same problem on JB 4.1.1
Whe version of Android is on the Kindle Fire?
I have been running the v1.3.3.8 of ADW EX on Gingerbread (Atrix 4g) with flawless operation.
On my Jellybean v4.1.1 (Atrix HD), widgets are crazy. Static icons stay put, widgits disappear
and reappear all over the place.
Is the above fix likely to work for me on JB?
Thx
