Great find.
Too bad they don't have one for my tablet yet.
I'll probably pick one up for my EVO 3D, since it's only $3.00.

For Galaxy Nexus...
I have all 3 - Skinomi, XO Skins, and Xtremeguard. Skinomi has the best cut but it's too soft that it would get dinged easily and not all of them would cure. XO Skins had a strange tint (even after a week) and the most orange peel.
Overall, Xtremeguard is the best for me. It's the closest to dry film in terms of surface smoothness and rigidity. The only negative is the cut - it covers the light sensor and there is a wide open cut above the earpiece and camera lens, but I think it's still a better overall protector. It is also has very little tolerance in terms of edge-to-edge size - you'd have to install it exactly and it is stickier and dries faster than the other brands, so little room movement while it's still wet.
Don't get the full body. The the side and back covers are not cut all the way through so it's kinda useless because it would stretch while you're trying to peel them out and detach them from the sheet.
The film quality is excellent though.

I've received 2 full body from them. The second one was a replacement after I complained about the cut, but the replacement was exactly the same. The back and side are useless because you can't peel and detach them from the sheet.

Chipping on the black version?

Having come from the HTC one S in black I am well versed in chipping problems on metal HTC phones, I have the One now in black and have noticed the first chip in the chamfered edge on the top, if it was the silver version I wouldn't have even noticed but the metal underneath appears a bronze type colour.
I haven't dropped the device and it is only ever in my pocket and I have a nilkin case but it doesn't protect the front edge. I hope this isn't the start of another saga... :crying:
I have 2 scrapes/chips on mine also and it hasn;t been dropped or bumped. Always kept in its own pocket etc..boo
Mines fine, nothing to report so far.

Dude thats not even a chipping....
BUY A PERMANENT GREY/BLACK MARKER for METAL SURFACES at your local pen shop and cover it up, should be invisible and will be good to cure other chippings too.
Oh man! That looks disgusting! I would go for a replacement!
But seriously - no. This is nothing. Let's get some things straight - "premium" feel of aluminum comes at a cost. Aluminum is soft, other stuff in the world is hard. Tiny speck of sand can do such a "damage". So just chill and accept your losses. iPhones 5 were more chipped out of the box.
You really can't eat a cookie and have a cookie. Just accept that no matter how you protect your phone, it will get damaged. You can always completely cover it with a plastic case either to protect it completely or to cover the chipped part if it is ssuch an issue.
I wonder how long it will take people to undertand that "premium" materials have a premium feel and premium look out of the box, but there is nothing premium about their durability. Industrial devices are made to excel in durability. Anodized aluminum and glass are the last materials of choice.

not the silver one, it wont scratch as easily
anyway what do we expect, if you read anandtech's review of the iPhone 5 you would understand this is a physical issue
however it can be countered by a some sort of nano coating which i am yet to see applied on a flagship phone

Chip is if you see the white aluminium base. This is not a chip. I know chips, my HTC One S bounced 3 times on the ground and got 4 chips. (and luckily screen didn't shatter lol)

You can see a base, I am not worried about this tiny chip, what I am worried about is if it is the start of something bigger like the One S. It seems HTC industrial designers have not learned their lesson when it comes to coatings and sharp metal edges.

Looks to me like it didn't anodize properly in that tiny spot. When you say that is shows bronze underneath, that tells me that it did get anodized in that spot, but the growth (yes anodizing could be considered a growth) was not uniform with the rest of the product.
If you didn't know, the anodized coating is similar to microscopic "tubes" that grow on the surface of the aluminum. These tiny "tubes" hold dye to give you the desired color. When you anodize something and it doesn't get enough growth, the color will be less saturated... literally. Hence the bronze color underneath. Think of the color of a black sharpie that is more or less dead... when it is new, it will draw nice and black, when it gets old and dried out, it will give you that faded "bronze" color.
In the end, these "tubes" are sealed holding the color in... I have attached 2 pics to give you a better idea what the coating really is.

Thank you tnEVo, that is a brilliant explaination of how it works.
Silver scratches or dents as easily it's just less noticable.
The problem is not really the color or anodizing when it is of good quality (=thick anodizing and hard aluminium, theres several grades of industrial aluminium and anodizing, cheap ones like on the iphone 5 and sturdy ones that are 3 to 10 times priciers, I don't know yet which one is used on the one), the problem is the chamfered edges.
90° angles are very vulnerable to denting/crushing/impacts and scuffing because thats where the aluminium is thinnest, at the top of each chamfered corners there is the thinnest ever peak of aluminium, and that peak gets damaged the first be it black, or silver or anything because it is the thinnest part of aluminium of the phone (cutting the top of a pyramid is easier than the bottom right ?).
"Now, after using the phone for more than a week, I can say it’s surely one of the best phones out there, if not the best. It’s got issues, for example, with the pretty finish chipping off, but I’m been very impressed in other areas like battery life and camera."

[Q] Replacement back door?

I am wondering if anyone knows where to get a high quality replacement back door to the SGS5 (black) that have the glossy finish of the white SGS5?
Preferrably as close to original as possible with water proof lists. Does this exist?
Yes! Sw-box.com I bought the blue cover and wow! 6$ for waterproof original cover. Love it. They have white gold and black.

Lots of vendors sell the part, as a simple Google search would have shown you. sw-box, Amazon, Ebay and hundreds of others. Most of the parts will be replicas and while they may have the water resistant gasket, it's impossible to say if it was manufactured to tolerances that mean it will really resist water intrusion effectively.
And it's not likely that you will find a high gloss black battery door. Most of knockoffs are imitating the Samsung design, which as faux leather have a grain and satin effect, and are a charcoal grey, not black. An extended Google search would be your best hope of finding a Chinese manufacturer that used a glossy finish on their part.
.
Of course I found 100's of back plates on ebay. Not many seemed to be of good quality thou, and even less with water gasket. Is it so wrong to ask for advice?
How about getting a quality back cover (water resistant of course) and sand it down with 1500 grit sandpaper. Then, using Fusion paint (designed for plastic) paint it any color you want? That's what I would do. Then you have the glossy Black cover with gasket. Boom.
You're Welcome.

Needing protection for new S5.

Hey guys
Wondering what covers you can recommend me.
Don't mind about the price but i'm after a really good cover/case which can protect the phone from drops, scuffs and scratches.
Also can you suggest me a type of screen protector to go for?
Thank you.

I'm using the tech 21 clear cover with an extreme zagg invisishield. Don't think it gets any better than that without ruining the aesthetics of the phone. Total cost is max £50 should be able to pick the zagg and the tech 21 for around 15 each, so £30 if you shop around.
You should read some reviews as you'll likely have some personal preferences that will heavily influence your choice.
If you really don't care what the case looks like and just want maximum protection then get a bunker type case like a Griffin Survivor or Otterbox Defender. Basically a big, thick rubber wall that will protect your phone against most accidents. Or maybe you want something more elegant, like a Spigen Ultra fit. A lot better looking and much thinner. But also less protection. Or a hundred variations on either theme.
Likewise for screen protectors. The tempered glass ones offer the most protection but are more expensive and thicker than plastic sheet type protectors. Read some reviews or better, take a first hand look at local stores to see what you prefer.
.
Thanks so much guys.
Not too fussed about how it looks but just needed something with the most protection.
Helps sell it later on if its well protected too.
Both suggestions were very helpful.
Had a brief look online at those and now I'm gonna decide which one to go for!
Cheers.

Also when u install the screen protector do it in a steamy room, go to the bathroom turn the shower up as hot as it goes then wait till it's humid as f in there, the steam and humidity causes lent and dust to stick to the moisture in the air and get stuck to the walls so there's less of a chance of getting it under your screen

The glass appears to be very soft. Get a screen protector.

I've had my Z3 compact for only 2 days, and I am already noticing micro scratches on the screen. My previous Moto X, which I've had for a year had no scratches on the screen of any kind, and I've never had a screen protector on it.
Anyone else seeing the same thing?

I've never used a screen protector on any of my previous phones, because I generally baby them. So I wasn't planning on using one with the Z3c. The front behaves more like plastic than glass, when it comes to scratches, apparently. None of my previous phones ever developed micro-scratches like this, and with how quickly they developed, this worries me a bit.

Well if your phone gets into contact with certain dust/sand particles, then there really isn't a lot of friction needed to create those tiny micro scratches. No phone display can withstand dust/sand+friction. The dust may be in your pocket, or wherever. You might notice the scratches more because this topic has encouraged you to actively start looking for them under very bright light.

My Moto X does not have any micro-scratches after being in the same pockets for over a year. Tapping on the Moto X's glass also feels a lot more dense than than the Z3c. I think Sony used some very thin/soft glass to achieve the "light" feeling of the device, which is going to make it a lot more susceptible to scratching.

Could you upload a video of this tapping sound difference? Keep in mind that the materials surrounding the glass also influence the sound the glass makes when tapped.
It gets the same micro-scratches that I got on my Nexus 5. I never got them on my S3 or HTC One at all, so there must be some minor difference there.
Still, even on the N5, the scratches weren't terribly noticeable except in bright light, and the Z3C has a considerably brighter screen.

The Handtec one came with a screen protector, but it was just one of those cheap plastic jobbies. They're always way worse than the good tempered glass screen protectors.
Anyone recommend a good tempered glass protector that is currently available?
This doesnt sound to good! Iam coming from a htc one that i have had for almost a year and a half and there is not a single scratch , not even a micro scratch and i NEVER used a screen protector as i find them almost impossible to apply correctly and they take away from the beauty of the display / phone just a tad !! I would be gutted if a new expensive phone was seen to have micro scratches after short use

Zagg Glass & Mirror Galaxy Note 4 (BUYER BEWARE)

These have been recalled by Zagg according to a Facebook exchange I had w/ Zagg and a rep Zagg Chick. They are on display everywhere including Best Buy and still available to order. The curve on the Note 4 glass causes the edges to remain lifted from the glass creating a weird halo tyoe of effect all the way around the edge. Some exchanges back & forth from custoners had Zagg requesting information (like a credit card, say what?) for an exchange when the engineering is corrected.
Don't want to load xda w/ bunch of useless photos but you can go to Zagg on Facebook and read more angry posts.

Got one on the day of phone release at Best Buy and had the guy install it - realized it was messed up, tried to put on a new one from a new package (for free) and it had that same halo effect because of the curved glass, so he just returned the glass one for me and I just got one of the normal Zagg kind and installed that for me and I was all set lol.

btw, not an employee nor affiliated in anyway...just absolutely love their products after trying 20 or so different screen protectors and hope I can help others save money/time/frustration that I went through
Bought mine at sprint the day it released as well. The halo dowant really bug me. When im using the phone i dont really notice and i have the samsung case so its closed when im not using the phone. But i do still have the zagg boxes and i registered the zagg glass already. When thru release the updated version ill awitch it out.
I bought this PThink - was like $9 - anyone ever used it?
Haven't had a chance to put it on yet
I did look at the glass and it does not appear to be curved. Although I can't tell for sure until I put it on.
Yeah, I was all set to take it back today along with a usb wifi adapter I decided not to use. Halo thing bugs me some, not to mention it looks like I'm eating KFC and texting on my phone from all the smudges on the screen. Even at $40, I decided to keep it to protect my phone.

Thanks for taking the time to share this. I got mine today, and the sprint dude said if you apply heat to it, then will go down. I'll borrow the neighbors hair dryer to see if this works.....I'm kinda doubting it...but if it does, I'll share. Otherwise, I'll be waiting too....but from someone who had 4 Notes 3's....due to breaking the screen....when he sold it to me, it was like I could hear angel music and bright lights were shining. LoL. If it really works, I'll be happy.
Please share your results. In my experience, tempered glass doesn't bend like that but my experience doesn't consist on phone screen covers.... ☺
My thing is you shouldn't have to apply heat to a $50 screen cover. The other material you can apply heat (sudden temperature rise) and have flexibility, this I've done before.
Same thing here. Zagg edges not down at edges. Sprint basically told me nothing they can do. Unbelievable. I guess ill register my zagg and hope for a replacement when one is available. 40 bucks you would think it would fit properly. Oh well. Ive contacted everyone i can.
Sprint said I was the first person to complain about it. I call b.s.
AS FOR ME.....GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME DEATH

Well I've gone though two Zagg glass shields on my Note 4, plus I've also gone through an HDX. Both of the glass shields didn't go down at the bottom. The problem with them not laying down on the edges was worse on the iPhone 6 and 6 plus. The HDX went down just fine but I really wanted a glass shield.
As for Zagg having recalled them... I'm not to sure if they have otherwise we wouldn't carry them at Best Buy. I have, however, noticed that you can purchase the shields on Zagg's website but they are backordered.
Zagg released a second batch of the iPhone shields that worked perfectly fine so I'm sure that they will for the Note 4 as well.
Ps... These devices are the only ones with these issues. I've probably put down hundreds of shields and never had issues.
