[Q] working sound quality mods? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have any of you actually heard any difference with any audio mod, I.e Beats Audio or Acid, on the N7? I'm a musician and have pretty developed hearing yet can't hear a difference whatsoever. Perhaps problems with installation?

are you listening through earphones?
if yes then change earphones or get a higher bitrate sound file.
IF NOT..
Nexus 7's speakers are fragile...
i mean mine lagged while watching a movie and a mid to high pitch sound was lagging to my speaker for about 5-6 seconds,
cracked and bursts my speakers.
My device was rooted..
Locked and OEM
RMA'ed!!!
got replaced
hahahahaha

Maybe a good set of headphone or iem needed to spot the differences.

Audio quality of the Nexus One

Hi guys,
I am a iPhone convert (have used the 2G, 3G and the 3GS currently.)
Could you guys please give objective and subjective comments about the 'line out' of the Nexus One? I hope it doesn't blow as that will be sad.
Regards,
Karan Misra
No one listens to music on their Nexus One!?
it is a mono speaker not a stereo speaker.
if you listen you should use the earbuds.

I am talking about the 'line out' of the phone, i.e. using good to high end ear phones (like Shure, Sennheiser CX500, etc) through the 3.5 mm jack.
I'm waiting for mine to get in today so I can sink my Etymotic hf5 canalphones into it.

Eagerly waiting for your feedback.
I hope it is not bad like the HD2 though HD2 scores a 10 out of 100 with 100 given to the 3GS. Speaking from personal experience (corroborating by http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_hd2-review-418p8.php... scroll down to the audio quality comparision)

It's not too bad for music, I don't know what you would expect from it but as I listen to music only on the train, it's pretty good for me. one thing: the overall volume is a bit low...
Also the stock earphones suck pretty bad. they are barely good for phone calls and no bass at all.
wow fail sorry this post was BS just technical difficulties. but FYI the included headphones, tho not sounding or feeling spectacular, have a remote that has a mic and play/pause/end call and forward/backward. so that's neat .
Regular headphones that use a 3.5mm headphone connector (common to various media players, etc) will work just fine with Nexus One.

Tried a pair of Shure SE530s, Sony V700s and my Zune buds...all work just fine.
kido...since it seems on par with my zune as far as i can tell i'm assuming it's just as good as the 3gs...but again i'm not at all an audiophile.
I hooked my N1 up to a pair beyerdynamic DT880s and ran through a few musical styles with MP3s ripped using lame with vbr -q 0.
The jack provided enough power to power the DT880s reasonably well without an amp but I probably would not try high impedance headphones. Anything "in ear" will be fine and by the time you get to the point you would need an amp it would be a waste to use them on a phone. Sound range is fine, perhaps a bit neutral, it is not weighted heavily towards bass which some cheaper mp3 players do.
Treble is clean but perhaps a bit thin. As you get into the high end of mid range it is a little muddy (the guitar felt fuzzy in Imperfectly as an example). Over all the sound is better than the G1, the only other phone I have handy to compare real time.
Rest of the mid range down to bass is good. The bass is not overpowering but solid. Against a neutral rig I would say that the Nexus probably accentuates the lower range but not a lot. If you really want a driving beat (the physical feel) in techno then you probably would need some form of equalizer but other than that it is fine, though not powerful.
Songs used:
Reactivate by DJ Akira
Jet Pilot by System of a Down
Metabolic by Slipknot
Imperfectly by Ani DiFranco
Glory O' by Blood or Whiskey (note: lower bitrate MP3. Really did not like the blend but on ear buds it would probably be fine)
Dulaman by Clannad
Machine Screw by Type O Negative ( )
Black Box Recording by Firewater
I did not have any classical with me but if need be I can add some (or other musical style that you are interested in).
As an addendum I would note that the included earbuds are utterly craptastic. If you want to listen to music for any reason other than to drown out the background I would suggest getting better.
EDIT: for the heck of it I put in a amp and it helped the bass a bit, the rest seemed about the same. The difference was not remarkable but noticeable.
Thanks for the detailed reply my friend.
Waiting for comparoes to the iPhone line up.
So mine is finally shipped....
I will let you all know... since no one evidently listens to music here
I would rate it as just okay compared to my 3GS, not bad but not great either....
I had similar results to JP up there, i used the HD555's that i have and got a fair sound out of it... again bass wasnt overpowering but produced enough to get my head bobbin (deadmau5 was my primary artist of choice)...
i would like to see a quality equalizer app/widget/phone integration in the future since i prolly wont need to carry my ipod around anymore now that i have a phone with a proper jack

Why do people complain about G2 Speakers?

I don't get it.
Try and follow the logic.
You want to hear some good quality music...
so you decide to use a cellphone's built in speaker instead of an audiophile headphone or portable speakers.
What is the point?
I mean, first of all, if you want to listen to HQ music on anything other than a dedicated mp3 player (iPod does NOT count, I'm talking about something like Samsung YP-P2 or YP-P3, or the Cowon S9), it is absolute redundant.
I can't even eloquently express my confusion at you people.
Like, obviously the cell phone speakers are naturally gonna be shiet compared to real ones, or even small little portable ones for that matter.
So if you use them, of course it is gonna be ****ty, so why complain?
And if you really do want high quality music, then you wouldn't be using a cellphone for media playback nor using the built in speakers to do the job.
It's like saying, oh man, this Toyota Corolla does soooo bad on the racing track.
Lol. Because complaining is fun, I guess.
I remember the ads for the desire hd claiming that it had "quality stereo sound." Anybody taken a test listen?

Ok. There's some of us that aren't audiophiles. So we resort to our phones speaker. Of course you can't expect great ear busting speakers but I mean CMON! Htcs giving us what seems like desire hds blown out garbage. Not cool bro

I wish they would start putting the speakers on the side, because its quite pointless to have the audio from a video or a game pointed away from you.
If you had a Touch Pro 2 before the Desire Z/ G2, you would understand the reason why I complain. I am not too fussed about the sound quality, It is the output that is too low both on the speaker and through the earphones.

Aren't there kernels available for your phone that increase Max volume? And dsp manager works for eq. Dunno if dsp is in market, or just on the forum. Most roms I flash for my Evo come with it, and the kernels I flash come with audio gain.
Sorry, I haven't checked your guys forum, just accidentally stumbled across this thread.

I have to agree a bit here. I'm no audiophile, but enjoy listening to music. I don't expect any super high quality from a cell phone speaker. But you don't have to be an audiophile to notice the speaker quality is not great. And the main reason others complain is that other cell phones do it better. The HTC Touch Pro 2 is a very similar phone in many ways (same manufacturer, similar size, some of the same features like the landscape hardware keyboard) but has a somewhat better sounding speaker. So HTC did it better before. The Vision is a step forward in so many ways, but a slight step backward in terms of the speaker. And the sound quality applies to the speaker phone, not just playing music.
Although I would stop short of actually "complaining" about the speaker quality. Its still pretty adequate for the times I want to listen to music or use the speaker phone, and can't (or don't want to) connect to an external speaker or headphones. It doesn't really detract much at all from the fact that I absolutely love my Desire Z!

The speaker already sounds pretty tinny when the volume is maxed out. I don't know if increasing the max volume would do much, but distort the sound even more. But a decent equalizer might make the speaker at least sound better. DSP Manager is not a market app, it needs to be flashed. And I've read posts that the flashable DSP Manager doesn't work on the Vision. You either have to flash a custom ROM that includes it, or possibly do some heavy tinkering to get DSP Manager to work.
Its not really a speaker to begin with.
ITS A RINGER!!!
Its purpose is to make a NOISE that you can identify as the PHONE RINGING. That is ALL.

Uh, no. Smartphones for years have had speakers designed for playing music and for use as a speakerphone. Even most dumbphones have a speaker for speakerphone use. Obviously the small size is not meant to replace larger speakers. But its decent to use for playing music. Just not as good as many other phones.
when i use speaker phone they arent loud enough sometimes
when i use the phone normally to my ear the speaker isnt loud enough sometimes
any other questions?
not everyone is complaining about the "playing music" aspect.

You think just saying something in caps magically makes it fact?
The phone is equipped with a speakerphone, therefore its a speaker. You're the only one here that thinks its a "ringer".
You can call it whatever you want. Doesn't change the fact that other phones have better sounding "ringers" including the past generation of similar HTC phone.

What exactly is a ringer? Is this another term for a buzzer (like a piezoelectric or magnetic) that I'm not familiar with?
The last time I heard the term ringer as it applied to a design component was for the old mechanical bell ringers used in landline phones (a long time ago). And as far as I know, landline phones nowadays all use tone ringer circuitry connected to either a buzzer or a speaker. Also, buzzers cannot be used to produce music (they require a square wave to produce noise as opposed to the sine waves used by speakers).
I was also under the impression that all modern cell phones used a speaker (just with varying degrees of cost/quality of the speaker itself and the type of amplification circuitry used, if any at all).
For me, I'm complaining about the lack of volume when using the speakerphone in call. Music wise, it doesn't bother me, but phone call wise, it does.

The speakers on the Galaxy S phones are actually good for audio/video playback.
They have to do something good....
I too noticed that my G1 had a far better loudspeaker, in both quality and volume once rooted and using Audiohack. The G2 speaker at about 3/4ths volume starts to sound like the speaker is blown. I tried everything and nothing seems to help this.
Try calling 611 for tmobile and put it on loudspeaker, I can almost guarantee it will be just about useless at anything over half. It is noticeably worse for actual conversation as opposed to music, but even music is far worse than the previous androids I've owned.
Any word on a physical mod to improve this?

[Q] sound quality of the play compared to the iphone is really bad

Hey guys
I came from being an iphone user, and one of the things I liked alot is the great sound quality it generates on all the speakers I connect it to.
Mostly I listen to my music in the car and I have a great system, now comparing the sound quality from the play to the iphone I was totally disappointed by the outcome.
In android I used almost every player ( the built in player, PowerAMP, moboplayer, QQplayer) I tried to play with the equilazier if there is one in those players.
The sound is really of low quality, the bass sucks, the sound is too sharp no warmth in listening to a song, no matter how I set up the bass or whatver I never even hit close to the qulaity i got from the iphone.
Am I missing something here, is there a better player that I should try out, or are there anything I can do in the settings?
Just tested it on my audio setup. Bass seems to be lacking a bit but the warmth seems ok. Now my audio setup is build around having little bass and warm music (took some tube rolling before I got what i liked). Maybe you could modify your audio setup to get it more to your likings?
I've been a power amp user ever since I had my old Hero.
Mostly listen to music through headphones (i have a very good set of sony in ear plugs that I use instead of the stock plugs) and I have no problem with the quality.
I've also connected up to a 2.1 logitech set I have & my X-Rocker & all have been great.
I am using power amp and it is more than fine
i also use power amp and find that with my after market sony in ear ,earphones
that the bass is loud deep and rich,
if u want to listen to music u need a player with a decent equalizer or its just not worth it
you don't need an equalizer to listen to music. why wouldn't you just listen to the song the way it's meant to sound
Why doesn't your great sound system allow you to stream over bluetooth or usb?
There will be no difference in sound quality whatever the device this way

I didn't buy my xperia play I won it in a contest. I also have the nexus s and that phone is still much better then the xperia play sound wise. I'm selling my iphone 4, android is so much better
im using the mw-600 sony ericsson bluetooth headset and the sound quality on those via the xperia play is great. I do think the iphone 4 and the ipad are on par with the arc and play though. When i put them through my logitech z680s (yes and old set up but one of the best!!) they all sound fantastic!
The original poster should send their play back though, definately something wrong there.

I prefer the speaker of the s3

I noticed that during loud crashes and explosion, the galaxy s4 speakers distorts while my s3 didn't. It seems like it has much more treble which seems to be what's causing the distortion. Anyone else notice the difference in sounds or is mine damaged out of the box?
This is only with the volume maxed.

I think that they only tested it out for music. It sounds great during most music but any loud explosions or crashes is where the increased treble is the culprit. I wish there was an equalizer type setting where I could lower the treble.

Lol, are you guys actually complaining about the sound quality of the built-in speaker during movies? It's not even designed to have the frequency response of a pair of $5 headphones, much less reproducing accurate explosions and crashes. Think about it, you have a tiny speaker that is pushing out sound loud enough to where you can actually hear it well enough from far away. It's there for one reason only, to have to ability to do a hands-free phone call.

If you are going to respond to a 1 year old topic at least make sure that your response is somewhat relevant. This was made in comparison with the galaxy SIII. I was just making sure that my speaker wasn't broken. There was only one guy here comparing it to a ****ty iphone.
The guy before you doesn't even deserve a response. Since I'm commenting here, I'm sure that they messed with the sound on one of it's many updates as it doesn't distort anymore.

Audio Quality

Having some issues regarding audio quality. over 92% of my phone's use goes to listening to music through headphones. ALL my past phones have all been HTC running PowerAmp and i have been happy. Unfortunately the audio quality in my Samsung is whack. i changed my mixer settings to get it to be a bit louder at least but when it comes to applying any sort of EQ, the quality is severely damaged. I can't really touch the PowerAmp EQ without bass distortion. i Also tried applying the MusicFX tweak but that only worked once upon enabling. Disabling broke it. and it didn't really work great anyway.
Can anyone shed some light on this? Is there a mod for KitKat that is worth checking out?

I use viper4android right now on my galaxy note 3 and it works amazingly with my "unbranded" beats headphones that came with my HTC One

I have used Neutronmp music player on all phones over the last year, including HTC One, Nexus 5 and Note 3.
If you're looking to get better audio quality then try flac files rather than mp3.
If you want very high quality audio then use flac files via usb otg cable to external dac / headphone amp such as Fiio E17 provided you have good quality headphones (not iem ear buds irrespective of who makes them )
