I have read dozens of threads here and elsewhere that ask how to resize images on the Nexus 7 so that they are not badly cropped.
Not one question has been answered properly and one solution (PicSpeed) is a joke as it does nothing.
Surely it is not beyond the wit of man (or even xda!) to design a solution to this ridiculous problem? It's a huge disappointment to be prevented from using one's own images as wallpaper on the home screen background.
I await a development with interest.
I download 720P or 1080p wallpapers and use quickpic app to crop them. This means they don't zoom in like the idiotic standard gallery crop.
Solves the issue.

You could try wallpaper wizardrii from play store..just use the scale option once installed.

1600 x 1280.
The standard gallery crop box will default to covering the entire image, there is no re-sizing which obviously degrades quality.
I use Simple Image Wallpaper. It's free in the Play Store and works great. Super easy.
1600 x 1280 doesn't work; wallpaper is zoomed into about a quarter of the full image. Tiny images and huge images & everything in between are all resized to show exactly the same part of the image - about a quarter.
Will try the other apps.
Thanks for the replies but I don't see anything overriding the inbuilt resizing.

Consensus seems to be it doesn't work and worse crashes the N7.

Works fine on my Nexus 7 and I've never had a crash.

I download wallpapers off of interfacelift.com, which resolution should I download them for, for this device? Every wallpaper I set is blurry (aside from LWP's and stock wallpapers). Camera pics and other ones are blurry.
I've been using 1280x800 wallpapers but I still get zoomed in poorly cropped wallpapers unless I use the stock ones. You could try any HD picture and use an app like wallpaper wizardrii to scale it nicely

I tried that one but even with a single wallpaper and no transition, my tablet lags. I don't get lag with a standard wallpaper though. Maybe I'll need to re-try and play with settings

Hmmm which ROM are you using?
Set to "no transitions" here, and not experiencing any "lag", however it does take a second or two to initially set the wallpaper on boot up.

I don't know if it's just me, but every time I try wallpaper wizardii, at first, it fits nicely, and there is no problem, but after a few hours, the tablet becomes laggy. Especially the home screen transition is very laggy. Same goes for Multi live wallpaper. Although this one is laggy from the start.
I just couldn't believe the high rating of the apps. And I'm guessing it's only me who's having the problems..

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but here's the solution...
Download Wallpaper Changer by j4velin. Download whatever wallpapers off of interfacelift (I use 1680x1050, but other resolutions should work), put them onto the SD card. Add the wallpapers to the rotation. There ya go. Note that this app has a "Change wallpaper" widget. Add that to your desktop for quick wallpaper changes.
fwiw the default Res on the stock wallpaper "default_wallpaper.jpg" is 1920 x 1408
Crazy but true.
So any time I try to set a "HD" image as a wallpaper, it blurs and zooms in way too much. I've noticed this is a common issue with honeycomb tablets and have tried the "tricks" to get around it, but no luck. I know you can set wallpapers to look correct as I've seen the screenshots. Any tips on getting this done as the stock wallpapers just don't cut it?

What dimensions and resolution are the images you are trying to use?

Been trying 1920x1408 as I've read that was the optimal resolution with the way honeycomb crops wallpaper images. Some look halfway decent, most just look awful. And honestly not sure image dimensions. Just been googling HD images

Search "Multipicture live wallpaper" in your market app.
It will set your images up correctly no matter what resolution they are (provided they aren't super low-res). It's a free app.
Once installed, it comes up as a choice in your regular wallpaper settings.
Sorry, I can't post links up, or I would link directly to the app.
Also, if you have a little photoshop beginning skills, you can make a template where you can overlay your image as a layer, and see exactly where things need to be moved.
When you set wallpaper from Gallery, they use a sizable template, so it will give you a good idea of what the parameters are.

Thanks. I got that and tried. While it does keep the whole image and leaves it without distortion, it is framed inside a black box. But it's better than before lol. Thanks a lot for the suggestion.

Saw this as an option as well by others. Very little Photoshop skills, but I can learn lol. I'd like to use some of the different pics I find and this seems like the best alternative to still be able to use most of the image. Thanks

Yeah, I think I'll try and make a template when I get some free time.
There was a guy who had one a long time ago, in the themes section, but the link to download was broken (he had it on megaupload), and I looked and seems he deleted the thread a week or so ago. Link didn't work, but it had an image of how the template looked (similar when you choose wallpaper from gallery)
I can tell you some things.
1. keep it as a psp so you can keep the layers
2. Remember, it will have several layers. Overall size, portrait, and landscape.
3. Use a different color and transparency for each layer.
4. Also, don't forget the top, bottom, and side borders.
5. Use your image as a new layer, and move it to the back of the template, do you can see what parts are going to be shown in both portrait and landscape. Then you can resize and move around the layer as needed.

Thank you very much for the help. I'll give this a whirl as soon as I can get back to my laptop and have a chance to teach myself a little. I've found a somewhat decent alternative in the meantime, Wallpaper Wizardii. It's not perfect, but it is by far the best results other than making my own. Oh and nice ROM by the way. Thanks for your hard work.

Hey guys,
quick question.
I make a wallpaper from my own picture cropped to 800x1280. Perfect right? I load it on my tablet it looks great but when I set it to wallpaper it forces me to crop and doesnt get past 1/4 of the picture vertically. I thought the resolution was that size? Am I missing something here?
Thanks
Pinch out to resize the crop window.

Ther iz a simple way.... go to system- framework- frameworkres.apk- draweble- ther iz a wallpaper called defaultwallpaper.png.... reset ur wallpaper to dat size.....
Hit thanx if i helped.....

I cant access that file to find out the size. Do you know it?
And to responder#2. I didn't mean a simple pinching of resizing the crop window. I got that. What I meant was it won't let me "pinch" out all the to my 800x1280 picture. It limits my selection area.
BTW I had this problem since day 1 of android usage. I just never cared enough to ask since phone displays are so small, but being this is my first tablet..a wallpaper makes a difference now.
Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?
Go get your own favorite 800x1280 picture. Download it, save it to gallery. And set wallpaper..you will not be able to set the ENTIRE image as wallpaper.
Figured it out.
http://androidforums.com/asus-eee-p...83827-no-more-forced-cropping-wallpapers.html
basically, download PicSpeed Wallpapers
Then when you set your pic as Wallpaper choose picspeed. And they offer different orientation.
Thanks man that app worked like a charm

And all the 1280x800 wallpapers everyone said is correct for Nexus 7 are no good either, can't use the whole image The cropped parts are just too zoomed in and don't look high-res.
I'm having better luck using my 1920x1080 wallpapers on it.
I would recommend searching for 2560. It yields results for both 2560x1440 and 2560x1600.
This is where I looked for mine.

If you don't use a launcher that rotates, you can use Wallpaper Wizardry from the Play Store to set the wallpaper to use the whole 1280x800 image. If you allow your launcher to rotate to landscape the image will be cropped and have black bars on the sides.

wallpaper wizardrys black bars in landscape are what annoy me, i wish there was a solution where we could crop both landscape and portrait separately in stock Google

Just installed CyanogenMod 10.1 - Milestone 1 on my Nexus 10, and when I try to set one of the default or cyanogen wallpapers, they're blown way up, like it thinks the screen size is much larger than it really is. I can set downloaded images as wallpapers using wallpaper wizardrii, if I don't want to have to crop them strangely, but none of the default wallpapers work correctly. Hoping someone can help me figure out what the issue is.
