UBUNTU for Nexus 4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Because I haven't seen anything regarding it. Would be awesome if I could partition to 2 8GB drives and have Ubuntu on one and Android on the other, would be tight on storage but I don't need 8 gig games or 3gig movies, I stream everything anyways. 5GB cap and I barely use a gig.

N4 has 12gb total available and don't think it's possible to dual boot just yet.

I'm also very interested in this and am currently reading up on it.. they all demo'd it on the galaxy nexus but I'm wondering if it'd work on the Nexus 4 too..

Guys, I'm just a noob so I'm not sure what the big fuss is with Ubuntu. I've wiki'ed it and it just seems to be linux for a phone, correct?

Ubuntu is a Linux distro for PC - the aim of Ubuntu phone is to be able to have that same desktop on your phone, and when you arrive at your computer, plug it in and continue the session on your computer. I think.

More info: http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/phone
It's said that first phone capable of running Ubuntu Phone will be N4, I wonder how much space will it take from our devices, and if we will be able to have it without screwing android critical partitions (dual boot?).
Check 11:34 on that video. God I love that status bar!!

So whats the deal with this? Is there any progress? If so where do I check it out? All I could find was very old info, as in the very first release.

Have you try using a search engine named Google to find more information? Not to be a jerk or anything but the official release hasn't arrived yet so who knows and no Ubuntu devices are in the wild.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2

I have searched high and low. Google search, yahoo, you name it. I even FB messaged Ubuntu and nothing but old info. And Ubuntu hasn't replied yet either.
Is there anyone around who knows some of them folks well? If so, can you get us some update?

No this is not the kernel source, that is posted in another thread, I am working on a kernel with OC/UV now, I should have my device on Monday.
I posted up the system dump in its own thread, hopefully it gets a little more visibility that way. Anything else people may need from me? Like I said, I have the time to do whatever needs to get done.

Yeah without root u can't access or write to system partition as far as I know. U can install cwm though interestingly enough which I didn't know (I did it yesterday to my mates gt-s6500) then rooted from there. So who knows wait for someone with bit more experience to give u definitive answer but if u can, I never seen it and I used fair few devices.why u not want to root anyway?

To be honest: "Custom Rom (which includes rooting)" and "noob" isn't a good match.
But make a test of your own: Read this and if you think you understand what you are going to do - do it. If not .... I think you know the answer.
Good luck.

I too am a noob to this but have managed to root and install a custom Rom and return my DHD back to stock. Best advice I can give from my experience is to google AAHK (I believe it has been removed from here) and read the effin manual enclosed within the zip file. It's one click and it will wipe and root your device. You can then install a custom Rom stored on Ur SD card through the Menu (HBOOT I believe). I know I don't have many posts on here but that's due to A LOT of time spent reading threads and then giving it a go. If you get stuck, I'm sure any questions you have have been asked here before

Ditto.
Search google for 'attn1 advanced ace hack kit'. Read his entire post, read the effn manual (inside the AAHK), read it again, then quiz yourself. Search youtube for other people using it, to give you an idea of how it should go. Search youtube for how to flash a custom ROM too. You'll figure it out.
If anything does go wrong, don't freak out, and come here for help.
Am a noob... rooted my phone two weeks ago and installed Android Revolution HD 6.3.3. Also tried out CM 7.2.
Rooting with AAHK is pretty easy, though the manual is not as clear as it could be. Download the Kit, read the manual and will be happy to help you with the parts which are not clear. It is still fresh in my mind.

Rooting the Desire HD was probably the easiest root I've had to do. I blindly tried to root my father's Galaxy S II and installed the wrong kind of firmware and it was a mess, DHD has a simple program which you can even root with, one click and reading the EFFN MANUAL is all it takes.

Easy? It is totaly insane! So many things to go wrong, first they don't recommend windows, you have to get Ubuntu, find your way in ubuntu (how do they say prompt in Linux? Ahhh, console? No, TERMINAL!) Then it is pretty easy, just one line downloads root and runs it, but I still prefer the method I used to root my wife's Galaxy Ace. Just copy a zip onto a SD card and boot in recovery and apply update from SD card. No need to connect it to the PC, worry about stupid windows USB drivers etc.
But it works and that is important. The manual is makig things more complicated than they need to be. Only once you do it you realize that if is not so complex as manual wants you to believe
cheers,
D.

Really? Oh dear, installing a new OS definetly doesn`t make sense for just installing another rom on a stock dhd.
Reading guide, doing whats written there ................. aaaaaaaaand it´s done.
Changing/Messing with the OS on an expensive device is not something you should do unless you understand what your doing. This is a Development site. Now a rom flashing site. Being a noob is no excuse for not following the forum rules. We were all noobs at one time or another.
You search, you read, you read some more, and then as your done reading.........you read a little bit more. Then you go about rooting and flashing the phone. When/If you run into issues, guess what you do. You repeat the above and search and read. Then if your still stuck and there are no threads about your issue and you followed ALL the directions that you could find, then you open a thread and ask for help.

First I'd suggest trying Disk usage or Storage analyzer app from playstore to analyze your storage space. Then you'll be able to see what directories/files take the most of the space.
There's probably some nice tool to find duplicates, but I haven't need such a app so I can't tell about that..

I checked the md5sum with that on dev host and it is the same.
I wanted to look at the folders to see if it had NativeSD support, since it is not clear whether it has on this thread, and if so, what folder it installs to.
Don't worry, I don't want to steal your work just would like to try it, and to know what I am trying.
