[Q] Help! Thinkpad Tablet stuck in Bootloop, need to restore - Thinkpad Tablet General

Hello xda developers!
My thinkpad tablet has been stuck in a bootloop for about two weeks now, and after trying some of the solutions posted on the forums without success I am hoping that someone here can help me restore it to working condition.
The tablet is the 16GB WE model with 3G and it had the last software update from lenovo installed when the problem occurred, the 132 if I am not mistaken. The Android version was 4.0.3. I rooted the tablet about 1 week before the problem occurred and everything seemed fine.
What I have tried so far:
Wipe Cache
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Reset Button
nvflash - quits because of a failed usb write?(even when run with root/admin rights...)
I only have the stock recovery installed and I cannot flash a nandroid backup from it. And I cannot install CWM recovery because I have no access to adb in the current condition of the tablet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm having the same problem, but with diferent conditions, it was with koshu's CM10 rom and CWM recovery for about 3 weeks, and yesterday it got stuck in the boot.
What i tried:
- Wipe data/cache.
- Re-fash the ROM.
- Restore a nandroid backup of the original ICS ROM.
- Restore with the ICS dump posted by MasterofComputers.
Any one knows what could be the problem?
Another question, where i can download the OTA files from the lenovo site, i looked everywere and didn't found it.

There are no real Update files. It uses small packs which only work if the former small ones are all installed in the right order

These are here

Any progress?

Same problem here, also while using Koshu's CM10 ROM. But I don't think that's it is related or caused by that ROM, since OP is having the problem with the stock ROM.
The CM10 boot animation loops, suddenly freezes followed by the tablet vibrating and rebooting. I can enter recovery but reflashing didn't help. No solution so far.

Since you have cwm you can flash the format zip in the cm10 thread, which will clear everything and should fix the issue. Then reflash cm10.

Thanks for the hint about data-format.zip. But that didn't solved the problem for me. Instead I had to run e2fschk on the /data partition. I occurred to me that I was unable to keep /data mounted rw. This is usually an indication of a corrupted filesystem.
1. Boot into recovery
2. Use these commands after you get a shell with `adb shell`
Code:
umount /data
e2fsck /dev/block/mmcblk0p10
3. reflash the ROM
That solved the boot loop for me.

Hi.
We are discussing on the Lenovo Forum about bricked Thinkpad Tablets and for the moment we got some attention from Lenovo moderators and technical people.
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPa...1-Errors-on-Recovery-Menu/td-p/1055573/page/2
If you have a Thinkpad Tablet that can not be restores because :
1) The "factory reset" is not working (keeps looping on the Lenovo Animation)
or
2) The "Android system recovery <3e>" is not working. You can not access it (freeze on Booting Recovery Kernel Image") or if you can access it is showing errors and can not be used.
Please visit the forum and post your problem. And send to the Lenovo user NINE your problem description.
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPa...1-Errors-on-Recovery-Menu/td-p/1055573/page/2
I can not guarantee that Lenovo will solve our problems, but we have to take the opportunity to show them the problems we are having.
Regards
Martin

BOOT LOOP FIXed
put it into new THREAD

Hi.
If anybody have errors on the Recovery Menu you can ask Lenovo for "extended Coverage".
You need to contact your "Lenovo support in your country for assistance" and if they don't know about the "extended coverage", contact Mark from the Lenovo with a Personal Message thought their forum.
Please check: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-slate-tablets/Thinkpad-Tablet-1-Errors-on-Recovery-Menu/m-p/1459057#M28111%C2%A0 to see if you fit their conditions.
I hope this helps you.

[Q] Help, solving this mystery? Bootloader/partitions?

Ok, where do I start. Here is my problem: Any of the leaked based rom get stuck at the black & white stripes (wich I flashed many time without problem) Let me explain the chain of event that got me that point.
Last week I installed the leak ( Acer_A500_1.031.00_WW_GEN1 ) and rooted it and patched the bootloader with blackthunder's apx tool that also installed a modified version of thor's cwm that work with ICS bootloader. Everything worked fine but knowing that civato's flexreaper support the ics bootloader I decided to install it...R11 worked fine (even the b&w stripes at boot was gone...thx to the ics bootloader).
This is where it got crazy, while doing simple web browsing, i got a freeze that obliged me to force shutdown. On reboot, I got a bootloop at bootanim. Decided to flash FlexR11 over it to fix. During the flash I received an error about flexrom. Rebooted and the bootloop persisted. Then cwm started to be slow responding to navigation with volume rocker, so I decided to flash Acer_A500_1.031.00_WW_GEN1 again wich didn't boot too. Cwm was still there but even more screwed, would not see any sdcard int or ext. I tried to apx push a recovery with blackthunder's tools with no success.
I finally got it back to life with TimmyDean's EUUs flashing a rooted 3.2.1. with HC bootloader. Now the only ICS rom I can install is thor's rom ..everything work fine. BUT any of the leaked based rom get stuck at the lines and even the leak itself after being installed get stuck at the acer logo...and cwm is still present where it should have been overwriten.
I think it may have something to do with flexrom (i guess thor don't use that partiton since it's for acer crapware)...but im not sure since 3.2.1 work with acer's stuff & all. Maybe the bootloader is corrupt in some way, but it was reinstalled by the EUUs tool anyway.
I tried to format everything including flexrom..tried both civato's kernel in case there are some bits of ics bootloader left... Im desesperate trying to understand what's wrong exactly and how to fix this.
Anyone have an idea? Thx in advance & sorry for my average english.

Sounds like you have data leftover (either not a good enough wipe, or corrupted data)
Try this. Note that this will reformat your entire internal memory, but will ensure all remaining data is cleaned up and removed.
Before installing your rom;
1. Wipe User Data
2. Wipe Cache
3. Wipe DalviK
4. Wipe Battery Stats
go to Backup and Restore. Select "Toggle backup and restore of internal storage (/data/media). Enable this setting by selecting it. By default, it is disabled. Then proceed to the formatting steps. This will format the Entire Internal Memory when you proceed.
Select Go Back, Goto Mounts and Storage
1. Format System
2. Format Cache
3. Format Dalvik
4. Format Flexrom
This WILL format your entire internal memory, so if you have something important, you need to copy it out. Note that this should not effect things on the Ext SD Card.
Thanks for replying, yes I already done that, the problem persist. I wonder if it could be the bootloader, but like I said, other roms works, only the leak based have problem. Is there a way to "format" the bootloader? It should have been reset to HC when I applied 3.2.1 in apx... hmmm very strange!

Well, more than likely it is indeed a bootloader issue. But you must understand, all these "leaked" ICS roms are what they are... BETA. And with each new leak, there's a different bootloader. So you have to pay attention to the instructions for the specific leak. Usually involves flashing a newer or older bootloader to match the rom.
Until Acer releases an "official" ICS Rom and source code for the 500/501, these issues are going to be around for awhile.
My choice, would be to run a 3.2.1 rom. Very few issues with some of the mildly modded ones. Then wait awhile, till the official ICS updates come out.
One good thing out of this, you learned some tricks on how to recovery from some "semi-bricks"
I think the leak may not be the source of the problem, I already installed 009 when it first appeared a couple of weeks ago, and restored with EUU without problem, but this time with 031 I rooted it with blackthunder's root tool and applied a modified bootloader and cwm recovery. Even if I restore 3.2.1 with timmydean's EUU package and hc bootloader, the leak base rom get stuck at the b&w lines (where it's looking for the bootloader or loading kernel). It make no sense to me that the leak is the source of the problem. Is there a diagnosis tool that can check my partition integrity? Still wonder...!

Well, this is one of the reasons I decided not to mess any further with the ICS builds till a good official version comes out
I'm not aware of any tools to check partition integrity. Maybe there may be something in the main Android Dev forum.
RA Recovery has an option to check your partitions, but I believe it only gives a current status whether they are EXT3 or EXT4.

It is possible to rebuild your partition structure from scratch (using SBK + bootloader + nvflash create command + bct + flash.cfg + system image + recovery image + boot image + probably some other things) but I'm not sure of anyone that has done this and I can't say I have myself. Using timmydean's method (with a, what looks like, leaked Acer A500 Flash Tool) should, in theory, wipe it clean and start again.
I created a flash bundle to reset back to version EUUs_SBK_Acer_A500_1.016.05_COM_GEN1 (it's on the forum I use which I got tempbanned for mentioning publicly ) but it's untested. I see no reason it shouldn't work, however.
I tried another way to restore my tab, this time flashing a leak based rom with RA recovery instead. This time i had a little different behavior, during flash process, formating flexrom froze for a while outputing this error: Random Offset : 0x188 ...the rest flashed normally. At first boot it froze after 2sec during bootanimation, before it froze at the black & white lines.
I think I may have a corrupted flexrom partition, so Im wondering, does the recovery*doing a quick format erasing only the first sectors? If so, is there any way to do a deep format?

Help! CWM not installed properly?! Bricked devices?

Hi folks,
5 day ago i rootet my tablet 16GB WE and installed Koshu`s CWM step by step like discribed in his threat [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831161]. At the end there was an error message..., i was too quick and made an reboot bevor i could read it.
But i tested if i rooted the tablet succesfully and the superuser-app said that i am root now....
Then i installed the v.0.8.1 Version and everything was fine!
a few days later i got reboots during normal use.
Now i cant boot in the OS, there are bootloops the hole time.
I think that i have not installed the CWM correct...
Any ways to check this with adb commands or something else?
It would be great if someone could help me....
Sorry for my bad english!

You can still boot into CWM? Well you could make a backup of the installed recovery (like shown in the CWM thread) and check if the md5sums are equal to the downloaded image. Btw. linebreaks in the logcat would really help reading it

yes i can Boot into CWM, but i cant restore my backup. I tried to install cm10 clean again but after rebooting CWM and booting the OS Android is updating the apps. But i did a full wipe bevor.Thats why i think that the CWM is not in an good state.
i am in the road and maybe i can later check the md5sum.
I can attach an picture from the CWM during trying formating and fixing permissions.
thank you!

I linked a zip file in the CM10 Thread that formats the data partition: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1846044
You can find it in the "addition steps" section. Beware that it will delete all your personal data including the internal sd-card (also nandroid backups if you have stored them on the internal sdcard). So make sure you have EXTERNAL backups if you want to keep some of the data.

I have nearly the same problem.
I rooted my TPT a few weeks ago, today I was reading about Cyanogen and decided to install CWM. After some issues with the adb drivers, I managed to install the clockwork recovery.
Now I followed the steps from the cm-thread. I did a nandroid backup and wiped my tablet. After that, I flashed CM10. But all I get is the CyanogenMod logo spinning around.
I tried to go back to my nandroid backup, but it seems broken somehow.
I also tried several several CM-versions and downloaded them several times, without success. But I realised, that the installation procedure of CM was very quick, too quick maybe? Could it be that my clockworkmod isn't installed correctly, because the installation of CM and the nandroid backup won't work.
I hope you guys can help me out. Because I only could find nandroid backups for ROW and US version. I also don´t have adb access anymore.

You have to download the formatdata.zip on your external sd-card.
After that you can boot in the recovery and flash this .please dont juse the cwm! Do you know how to boot into the recovery?
Power on and during that you should drop-down the volume + key a few seconds.
This helped me and others.

I was thinking about 2 possible solutions right now.
1. get another nandroid backup (Problem didnt see any for the 16gb WE version)
2. try no reflash another CWM version or maybe ventana cwm and try again to flash Cyanogen (don't know if its possible to just flash another recovery as an image with the current working recovery)
So what do you guys think?

One last question. I am using the folio keyboard with an european layout (qwertz), but with Cyanogen it is us layout (qwerty). How can I change this?

[Q] Constant crashing/rebooting on CM10 TPT US?

I used this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32540070&postcount=15
I went from stock 4.0.3 to Koshu's CM10 0.8.1
I haven't installed or done anything after flashing, I just left the tablet on. I noticed that it crashes randomly/reboots.
I read that there are crashlogs in /proc/ but I don't even have that folder.
What can I do other than return to stock?
EDIT: I found that this thread is the same issue http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1964655 and going into advanced settings and keeping wifi on at all times is a half solution. It appears to be an issue in Koshu's CM10 but I can't post about it in his thread.

Koshu's ROM is working well for most people but is still in beta so abnormal behaviours are to be expected.
You can get logs with logcat and dmesg. There are threads on xda and Google about how to use them. Logcat for example can be invoked with apps on Play, adb or via a terminal.
It's up to you whether you can live with the crashes or not. Koshu is actively developing but has other priorities so we'll have to be patient for further bug-squashes. Especially since afaik there aren't any other third-party TPT ICS ROMs.
Stuck in bootloop. CWM still available. Can't establish adb connection.

I had success following the same process: US 32GB wifi only Stock ICS -> DebugfsRoot -> install CWM -> flash CM10.0.8.1
JB was smooth and performance was great. Didn't mind the restarts if I left it idle for too long.
After a few days my TPT entered a bootloop and I have been stuck for a few days now. I can get to CWM recovery boot and re-flashed the CM10 ROM but still got the bootloop [boot hangs at CyanogenMod blue wheel screen]. I then flashed back to my rooted ICS backup but it hangs and reboots at the fancy Lenovo screen.
When I try to restore from my ICS backup, CWM gives an error that /data failed to restore properly. Someone posted with this same issue and they got passed it by formatting /data with NVFLASH. I tried suggestions from this Guide: How to Recover from a bootloop but I can't get an adb connection established.
Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions to get passed this bootloop issue? Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for the suggestion. When I do [advanced -> wipe dalvik cache] I get the following message:
E:unknown volume for path [/sd-ext]
I have a feeling you might be right about the dalvik cache from what I have read in other posts. Is there another way to wipe dalvik cache from CWM? I will search for the update.zip you mentioned in the mean time. Thanks again!

I found Koshu's post to wipe/format the data partition. Put format-data.zip on the external sd card. Booted to CWM and ran [install zip from sdcard -> choose zip from external sdcard -> format-data.zip]. I re-flashed CM10, restarted and am back in business! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

[Q] I bricked my tablet now it freezes at bootloader screen

So Today i just installed v8 ics bootloader on my acer a500 and i was very happy because after one month of trying auto way and failing i tried manual way and it worked
so i installed cwm then i wanted to install a rom
at the wipes i choose
Dalvik Cache
then i asked it to backup my first rom
so it went into the bootloader mode and after like 20 mins said that backup failed because of a reason i can't remember .
then it restarted and it just freezes at the bootloader screen .
and whenever i restart or anything just freezes at bootloader screen. :crying:
is there anything i could do to fix it ? even if it includes wiping all of my data?
I am new to android I know I probably just did something very stupid but we all do mistake and learn.
I suggest installing whatever rom you were planing on installing after your backup, that might fix your boot problem. I also suggest flashing and using TWRP recovery, Cwm would never backup my flexrom partition but TWRP always backs it up and i never have issues making a backup or restoring from a backup since using twrp. Use TWRP 1.7.- as some problems arise when using the 2.2- versions..
I used the afterota to install twrp over the cwm recovery but you might not need to.
Good luck and if i can help you i will if issues arise.
Please I am a noob can u tell me how to do that in very boring details ?
now after a little button pressing thanks to ur idea it gpt fixed.
thanks alot

[Q] i9505 /system mount trouble

Hi.
I've searched through a LOT of posts, but only found slightly related (and for me unhelpful) comments.
I have a GT-i9505 (i9505xxuame2), and rooted/flashed it using Odin / modified_cf_root. However, although I have succsessfully installed TWRP - AND have (seemingly) been able to make a full backup to my external sdcard, I am completely unable to install CM 10.1 nightly / AOKP (both i9505 versions).
Whenever i try this (via recovery of course), it always fails, reporting it was unable to mount /system. When restarting the phone, it just 'hangs' on the splash screen. The only solution then is to restore my backup, which works fine... HOWEVER, I suspect that since it has problems with the /system folder, It might not actually have backed this up, and that restore only works because /system happens to be untouced by my attempts to flash it.
Trying various tips & tricks found here on XDA - like manually mounting /system in TWRP, reflashing in Odin etc. has not helped me. I also noticed that when entering download-mode, it states that write protection is enabled (as in this thread - which unfortunatly also did not solve my problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2267107). I also tried CWM, but using this I'm unable to manually mount both /system, /sdcard AND extSdcard (or whatever extrenal memory was called... don't remember.. ) - and it of course has the same problems trying to flash either ROM.
My feeling is that my unit is not (fully) rooted, but like I said, I've been unable to find a solution. I really hope you can help, because I'd love to have CM on this delightful piece of hardware.

OMG! same issue here.. exactly, please HELP someone!!!
Format /system in recovery and then try flashing cm. It shouldn't be an issue mounting system if the partition is formated.

Please elaborate for me,
Wipe does a format of the partition, is that enough or do I need to actually to use Format in the menu, as in kill the whole internal storage?
thanks
Linus
wipe is enough

thanks for the answer,
I hoped for that and also tried it.
No fun
I think I'll have to go for full format.
Just hope that does nothing bad >.<
Or is CWM maybe a better alternative?

Hehe I well tried that one,
no luck
interesting since 2.5.0.2 it says, unable to mount /system, and then promptly crashes
oh and the same happened in CWM
Hell XD
could I flash AOKP via odin maybe?
not like I like the idea >.<
It generally takes a few goes for the recovery to flash the rom in s4. Until someone works out what causes that bug in the recoviers you kind of just have to reboot and try again and again if necessary until it sticks.

Aright, I think I found the way for me
Boot into recovery --> wipe system --> mount system --> if ok --> flash
if not ok --> retry the whole process
Strange stuff, but yay thanks all for your help

Crap. Have same problem.
I had this problem after flashing MH8 firmware (new bootloader) with Odin.
No matter what I tried in recovery I kept getting an error saying that it failed to mount system.
I had an older version of PhilZ on my ext SD luckily, so I flashed this, rebooted recovery then I could format system and it was mounted again.
then just flashed my newer recovery back and all was good
Hi guys,
it appears I'm having similar issues to you both but after 5 hours of constantly trying to fix this I'm still stuck! I've opened a new thread and I was wondering if you might be kind enough to help me out on there please?
Here's a link to the thread - would really appreciate any help you could provide... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46082532
