you need to unlock the bootloader and get a custom recovery, then you can easily install a custom rom

Hello All,
I'm a new user of a galaxy note 3 n9005, quite a while I have been eyeing this phone up.
I tried to look for some sticky threads with links to common questions, which I couldn't find, apologies if it does exist then I will be grateful for a link.
I come from path of HTC phones going from HTC Desire Z to HTC One X, the first being an absolute joy for custom ROMS with CWM installed. The latter (HTC One X), being quite a pain with custom rom, having to connect it to a PC every time I wanted to install a ROM.
So really my question is:
1) Rooting is done via CF-AutoRoot, is that still the one people use the most or are there better alternatives now?
2) I don't see anything about boot loader being unlocked, are they already unlocked by default or does CF-AutoRoot takes care of it too?
3) Which custom recovery is recommended for compatibility? CWM Recovery, TWRP?
4) Lastly, can I have the joy of using CWM (ClockworkMod) to view, download and install ROMS like the olden times again?
I just hope my modding and installing roms is more joyful than my HTC One X!
Thanks for your patience, again sorry If there are threads that answer these which I may have missed.
Guys i heard official CM 12 for Galax s4 i9505 released, i wanna install it, the problem is im a completely noob for install custom OS, never done it, im afraid i might brick the phone, can you guy guide me to do this please, current stock version 4.4.2 is very laggy :S
Thanks
Firstly, you have to be rooted.
I used this guide to root my s4. Installation instructions on second post.
Warning: Make sure you have the right model. Do not use CF-Auto-Root if you have an AT&T or VZW branded s4.
After rooting you will need a custom recovery.
There are several custom recoveries. The most popular being ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP).
You can use ROM manager from the play store to install a custom recovery.
Or go here and use that guide.
After rooting and installing a custom recovery you can flash a custom rom. What you need to do when flashing a custom rom depends on the rom itself. See the rom installation instructions for that.
It's not hard if you follow the guides carefully. Or you can as a friend (who is more experienced at this) to help you

You could flash the Google Play Edition ROM found here. I use it myself and it's very stable and haven't encountered any problems so far.
Edit: Only downside is that you can't move apps to sd card. It's not supported yet.

that sucks :. im a heavy app user ,anyways did your phone lagg on stock android? mine is very laggy.. its on 4.4.2
Not able to move apps to sd card is only a problem when you have the 16GB version. But I heard there is some workaround for this.
In my opinion stock rom was pretty fluid. Didn't have any stuttering. Only lag I ever experience was when changing music tracks and the home button lag. But I have the international (unbranded) version of the S4. Which means no carrier bloatware to suck up the power and performance of the phone.
The gpe rom does seem faster and smoother compared to stock firmware.
Hello everyone I'm new here I just recently rooted my Galaxy S4 i9500 and I want to put in cool speedy Rom.
I also heared that I can combine it with lolipop or something? I dont realy understand it yet I hope you can explain it to me help me choose what's best for me without bricking my phone....
Also I would like to know what apps I must have after rooting or what apps you recommand for me?
Any help will be aprreciate thanks for all !
Start reading as much as you can on this forum and learn from it.
You won't brick your phone, that's almost impossible. That has never happend when flashing custom roms.
Just flash a custom recovery for the i9500 and start flashing the rom you want to try. Always read the first post of the rom and probably the last few pages of the thread.
First of all thank you for the reply, Finaly!
Someone offered me the omni rom with lolipop.
I mainly looking for speedy tweakinish rom and it seems awsome,
but maybe there more roms even better?
also I saw you need to delete anything from the phone
b4 you put a new rom so my question is how I save the
important apps and data and if i can skip all the crap i used to have??
Question
Hi! I have a Galaxy S4 LTE (I9506) and i'm on stock rom (4.4.2, I9506XXUCNF3). I successfully installed a TWRP recovery via ODIN. Root done and it works. Now i want to flash the PAC lollipop ROM. Do i need something else to do before flashing? Thank you in forward!
Guys,
I know it was a repeated question -
I would like to root my Xperia Z1 C6903 to get the lollipop installed and want to feel the OS. Can someone please share the steps to be followed/links for rooting the device and install the latest stable lollipop update !
Note - This is my first time in rooting the phone !! Got vexed with Sony by waiting for official lollipop release for Z1
Wrong section, dude.
Anyways, i recommend downloading a rooted lollipop rom and doing a full wipe.
Start by rooting your kitkat, that will be pretty easy, then proceed to download custom recoveries. I recommend Nutz dual recoveries. After that, download a rooted lollipop rom and save it on your external SD card. Boot into your recovery, do a full wipe and flash the lollipop rom. After that, you're free to do whatever you like with it. You can download rockz1 rom, which gives a lot of modifications and options or you can customize the stock rom to your liking. Good luck.
