Scratch Fixes - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have extremely tiny scratches on the back of my N4. The genius that i am was impatient and took off the original back protector it came with. the scratches are really minor but REALLY annoy me. I have searched around and dont wana risk sanding down the back of my N4 and had no luck with clear nail polish and have not tried any other methods, but what I have purchased is Displex (http://goo.gl/Slh1r) It has good reviews and Im confident it will pull through due to all the positive feed back I will post my results here after it arrives in about 5 days. :good: I was just wondering if anyone had something theyd like to share to help? :fingers-crossed:

Install a back skin protector. I know wet application versions will hide existing scratches and help prevent new ones.

But you will get scratches on your skin protector, which will annoy you again.
My advice: learn to live with it. You can't make it look as new forever. Yeah, you can, if you use a full body protector, but then the protector itself will get scratched, which will annoy you again. Then if you take it off, your device will look as new, but you won't be able to look at it for too long because otherwise it will get scratched.
Scratches are inevitable.

I don't mind scratches on screen protectors because I know they're not actually on the device c

Yeah, but you will still feel and see them on your protector. What's the point of not having scratches on your device if you can't take pleasure of it?

I guess cos a protector costs a few quid and can be be replaced every few months if scratched? The phone stays pristine.
That's the whole point of a protector isn't it?

hi, in my opinion the real problem are the scratches on chrome frame grr, no way to protect it without a silicone skin o a bumper

Wet install protectors self heal, so there's nothing to feel and are so thin and unnoticeable. Why would you end up not be able to take pleasure of your phone?

Hence, full body protector

Have you tried the toothpaste method? For a very small scratch I'd give it a shot.

The problem with anything like this is that while it will seal the scratch from turning into larger crack, you will still see it and it won't go away.
I wasn't kidding when I said toothpaste. I use the original Crest and it has done well for me. I use a small (barely) damp microfiber cloth with a little bit of toothpaste. Some people will tell you to massage it in with a swirling pattern, but I wouldn't suggest it. I rub in the direction of the scratch and then let it set overnight before buffing it out.
I haven't done this with my N4 yet, but I plan on it in the event that I start to see little scratches.

He's not saying that the glass will repair, he's saying that screen protectors self-heal in the event that they (the screen protector) get any minor scratches. Your mileage may vary.

They do? Well, then there's something to say for full body protectors. I, personally, still wouldn't get one (I like the feel of the glass), but if they heal the scratches I see a point in using them.
What I meant with not being able to take pleasure of your phone is that if the protector would get scratches, you would feel them and they would annoy you. Sure, the actual glass will be scratch-free, but the moment you take the protector off to enjoy your scratch-free glass, you will get scratches on it. So what I mean is that you will never be able to enjoy a scratch-free experience. I saw it like putting plastic over your furniture. What's the point in keeping your furniture brand new if you can't enjoy it brand new? But I didn't know that wet protectors self heal.

[Q] Screen easily scratched

I am on my second Arc and both screens are exhibiting scratches despite being kept in a pouch and not coming into contact with any hard surfaces. Anyone else notice these so called 'scratch resistant' screens are far from?
Are you sure it's the screen it self and not the screen protector that's on it?
Most people get the arc with screen protector already on it. look close maybe you will see it.
took the screen protectors off as they diminish the quality of the screen both look and touch wise. didnt think it would be an issue considering the marketing spiel about the mineral glass!!
from my experience with "scratch resistant" screens, unless its gorilla glass, get a screen shield.
Depends what you mean by removing the "screen protector".. the actual factory fitted, almost invisible screen protector??
you mean there is another removable film under the sticky with the peel tab??!? hmmm

I'll assume, for now, that was a genuine response and not a sarcastic one!! ;-)
Yes.. if you look at the very edge of the screen you can see where the factory fitted screen protector is.. it really is the best screen protector you'll get...
Ah ha! thats hilarious - I never would have guessed that! apologies for being so retarded - I never bought a phone which came fitted with a protector under another protector! its so flush I dont think i would have ever noticed! i just wonder how everyone else but me saw it. very helpful - thanks alot.
i'll just go and find a sword to fall on...
lol
I was also surprised, really great from SE.

My 10 year old Omega Seamaster has mineral glass and showing no scatch what so ever. My iPhone4 with gorilla glass is one big scratch.
I have the Arc now and am very happy with it.
Hello,
Does anyone here with an Arc have removed the factory installed screen protector and have gone without applying another screen protector? How is your screen doing?
I'm changing screen protectors every two months and I hate to do it, but I want to know if the scratch resistant screen is indeed scratch resistant. I'd love to go without a screen protector, but I'm afraid to do so, unless someone without using one can tell me his/her story.
Thank you.
I know it's not the Arc, but check out this SE Xperia Active "screen torture"
Mine (arc s) had no protector for about a month and got 0 scratches...
Now Im using an oleophobic protector(Steinheil Ultra Series [Ultra Optics]) and I think is unnecessary because the screen already have a better oleophobic coating, also reduces the screen brightness
BTW my brother xperia x10 still without protector for over a year and have no scratches
Sorry for my english
My wife took off her protection and now we are having another baby! Jk she saw scratches right away I would recommend using a scratch protector, because even the so called gorilla glass can scratch with just regular use

Yup, that's it. It's *really* difficult to get off.
Removed mine about 6 months ago after it got scratched. Never bothered to install the spare that came in the box. Been keeping the phone in my pocket (with wallet, but no keys or coins in that pocket ever) and there are still no scratches whatsoever on the screen.
There are plenty of chips & scratches all over the rest of the phone though.

Really? What on earth is she doing to the thing? I've dropped mine so many time's it's not even funny, it has chips and scratches all over it (including one scratch i'm particularly proud of right across the camera lens) and yet the screen is still pristine.
Are you absolutely sure you dont still have the factory fitted screen protector on it? Unless of course she's keeping it in a handbag filled with rusty nails and sandpaper, which is what my ex-gf seemingly used to do to anything she borrowed of mine...
Just like to point out something important, the protector that is factory applied and is hard to get off is a SHATTER PROOF SHEET! As the screen has been designed to be airtight (the gap between the screen at the touch layer) I have heard of people who have removed this protector and after dropping their arc, the whole screen shattered
This is why despite having a **** load of scratches, I'm too afraid to remove this cover, so I wouldn't really recommend it...

I had to put it on myself (very scary moment).
Must admit i've never regretted it!

I have got scratches on Galaxy S2 screen!

Galaxy S2 has gorilla glass that cant be scratched (scratch resistant), I have kept my phone without screen protector but I use it very carefully, still it has got two scratches on the screen.
Furthermore, there are two spots on screen from where it seems like the alkali-aluminosilicate thin-sheet coating (Gorilla Glass coating) is vanishing.
Its terrible to see the device deteriorating so fast. I have had it for a week now.
Is someone else having such a problem?
contact the provider you bought it from or samsung themselves - be ware they may want to replace so if you have a custom rom be careful!
How many times does it have to be said?
Gorilla Glass SCRATCHES LIKE ANY OTHER GLASS. It is scratch-resistant, but not scratch-proof. Tougher than standard glass, but not impossible to break.
Samsung will do nothing for you about it.
Try to keep it away from sand, as it is the easiest way to get it to scratch.

You're right. Nevertheless, flashing back the respective original stock rom and using a JIG to reset the custom binary count hopefully will solve the warranty problem.
Its probably not the actual glass but the coating that sits on top.

Screen scratched and burnt pixel-can it be replaced?
Hey guys!!
Does anyone know if there is a way to get my galaxy s2 replaced? I have a scratch on the screen as well (and a big one that can be seen even with a screen protector) and one red pixel!! I currently have sent it for antenna repairs (sim was not recognized at all by this phone-not even pin was asked..)
So, is there a way I can demand a new one due to some guarantee reason? I have the stock rom and haven't tried to flash a new rom.... not yet at least
Thank you in advance! Hope someone helps me out!

True. Gorilla glass screens always has scratches but they are less visible than on the other screens. If you'll scratch your screen hardly, even gorilla glass won't handle it.
i have 2 after that started using screen protector but they were only visible in sun light now screen protector so many scratches but thankfully not on screen
Why you guys don't just use screen Protectors? The device's Screen will stay in Top-notch condition forever....
ahh i forgot: for sure, a good screen protector will cost you like 5 - 8 Euros but c'mon... the device is about 450 to 500, wich is much more expesive...
Why on earth do people start these type of threads if your unwilling to use a screen protector then you get scratches on the screen of your phone it's your own fault.

If its a jeans (with metal studs), you could scratch screen on the studs while moving phone in and out of the pocket.

The factory screen protector is good! Just leave it on the screen
I can say that the screen doesn't scratch that easily, but in my case, it scratched when i placed it inside my shirt's pocket. Apparently the shirt's button did it. The price for replacing the screen around my parts is 60 euros.
I had the factory screen protector for 10 months. Then one of the corners started to peel. so I took the protector off and used it for a few weeks, decided that it wasn't slick enough and I had to clean it all the time, tried that cannuba wax for phones. I spent the money for the Zagg protector. Great packaging, lots of lubricant to spray on fingers and protector allowing you to slide it around until it's right, micro-cleaner cloth and composite squeegee with a grip and lifetime replacement warranty. It works well, no bubbles, and a sort of spongy feel to it.

you probably still have the factory screen protector on... look at the corner, you'll see it.
The actual screen in mineral glass, and there is a video somewhere on here of a guy with a knife going at it and it not scratching.
I took my factory one off long ago, and it made the screen much better. It looks better and is more responsive
I replaced the factory protector with a translucent protector since I dont really like transparent protector.

I wanted to get rid of the screen protectors a few month ago as I was sick of using my ipod touch which had a normal glass screen and then using the crappy x10s.
Well what a mistake that was. The x10 comes with two protective layers so when you think you've taken off the screen protector, go one more til you get to the glass feel.
Big problems for me though, the screen became strange and almost too sensitive. When using the launcher and scrolling it would go crazy, unlocking the phone became a mission.. big mistake. I ended up ordering in another new screen protector as It was hardly useable
On the other hand, the screen did look a thousand times better. Alot brighter and clearer. I would have been without the screen protector for about a week and discovered a small scratch which isnt viewable at all but I did see it. So I would be careful if your planning on going without it.
If there was a way tweak the screens 'sensitive feel' and correct that I would love to go back. Maybe one day it will happen.
The X10 has so much potential and in theory should be capable of doing so much more... but sadly it was made by Sony, you know the rest.

Removing White Marks from Protective Film

Has anyone tried to simply remove the white marks from the protective film that come with the Nexus 4, instead of buying a whole new screen cover?
nah , i prefer get a new one, the existing one
easily peel off though.
The original one is crap. It scratches extremely easily.
Just don't use one. I have been using my Nexus 4 for 2 months now. Not a single scratch. (I use a bumper case though)
I'm not worried about scratching the screen protector, that's the point lol. I'm worried about scratching the screen. The original is quite thick and I'm fairly sure will protect the screen quite well. However, I was given a free screen protector with a case. I may invest in a few more in case this one doesn't work though.

Which is why I suggest we leave the screen film from the box on, but the white marks are annoying. Mine is still on and there are no marks on it. It's great for running your finger on too. I've certainly had far worse screen protectors. I might try a little bit of rubbing alcohol this weekend to try and remove the white marks and let you know.

I agree. I've left mine on as well and haven't any issues so far. It's really not a bad screen protector (or whatever you want to call it). I've purchased screen protectors for other phones that scratch very easily. I did purchase some screen protectors for my Nexus 4, but haven't put them on because I like the one that came with it. It gets the job done.

So, ill have a pop this weekend with light rubbing alcohol. It might not remove it and it definitely won't if the white is on the sticky side but if it does ill happily use this as a protector lol

Not even a little bit?
I have the back protector still and from the feel of it, it's definitely not on the adhesive side. I haven't try to remove it but I was thinking about rubbing alcohol. I think it might take quite a few tries...
The back protector? I'm talking about the screen protector...
Isn't it the same material used for the makings? You're talking about to volume and power button marks? For me it's the white rectangle that has imei sticker. I peeled my imei sticker off and kept the protector.
Sent from my Blenzderz 9000
Yes, the marks. Interesting that you think they can be removed. I will have a go with some rubbing alcohol. Might not come off though.
Rubbing alcohol doesn't work for me. I've even tried to scratch them off causing a nice patch of scratches that are more annoying to look at than the marks. Good to know nail polish doesn't work... that was going to be my next step.
You can try using a white background on your homescreen
The patch is actually pretty small just the left half of the power symbol... I do have more screen protectors on the way anyway along with the new Rearth Hybrid case that everyone has been squealing about.
Ahhh damn they must be under the protector. Will have to buy some screen protectors

Maybe the OP had to break the bank to afford the phone in the first place.

Careful putting your phones in your pockets! Updated w/pic of scratch

I always take good care of my phones. I have yet to break one, or lose one.
Today I did something I've done thousands of times, slide my phone into my pocket, and it put a nasty scratch in my screen. I always slide it in screen to my leg, to protect the screen in case I bump into something. The little rivet on the condom pocket of my jeans barely made contact and it scratched it.
Attached an image of the offending jeans so you can avoid the same fate.
Also to all the haters, these are far from skinny jeans which I don't own a single pair of.
I have no problem fitting my phone and hand in my pocket at the same time.
To all of you that wear jeans that are excessively baggy in the thigh area; you either don't have enough thigh, or don't have enough weiner. I suggest hitting the squat rack, or your parents for the latter.
Yeah its a bugger when it happens. I'm guessing that's where the S4s gorilla glass 3 might be better

On the plus side, the picture of the offending jeans looks pretty slick! :good:

That's what people said about original Gorilla Glass and then about Gorilla Glass 2 when are people going to learn if you don't want scratches get a screen protector. I have many watches with sapphire lenses much harder and more durable than gorilla anything and I have scratched them so...
To the OP sorry about that! And thanks for the heads up I have done that one myself but I have more zagg than any sane person should
That's true too

Zagg is in the mail too
This could have happened to any screen, this post is simply a heads up to be careful with something as simple as putting your phone away in your pocket. Had I seen a similar post I'd have switched to my left pocket to avoid such a tragedy.

Oh man that is horrible! Little salt on the wound. Really am sorry to hear that. On the plus side I have gotten some used phones that had some scratches and used a zagg and they disappear so you can't see them at all.

I ordered iSheldz.

The gorilla glass screen is hype. It's nice to have but it's not scratch proof, it's scratch resistant. I won't even use my HTC One yet (still in it's protector sleeve in box) until I have all the protections I need. The only thing I have done was to inspect it to see if I had a good batch.

Have you used an Ishield before? how does it feel?
I've tried so many screen protectors and have yet to find one I really like.

Yes, I currently have iShieldz on my Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S3.
It feel quite good smooth feel, with subtle like rubber effect. The film texture is clear in comparison to the Zagg which appear to have a orange peal look.

Left pocket, no keys, no coins with phone. Never got a single pants-related scratch on my phones.
Wow that sucks. Have no scratches on my phone screen from putting in my pocket. though I do have nicks in the aluminum edges at the bottom panels on the front of the device from putting it in my pocket and walking around. Never have anything in the pocket with my phone and I make sure there is no lint or sand or anything of the sort to hurt my phone. But I wear skinny jeans so having it pressed tightly when walking has got little marks in it. Must have had extremely tiny particles of in my pockets that did it. Really disappointing. Was hoping to keep this thing perfect. Gonna get the siedo surface to protect the aluminum panels at the bottom and top.
It's obvious that something in my pockets did it since the top aluminum panel has no nicks in it.

Just steer clear of the gay skinny jeans and all will be well.

That's not a very nice thing to say. Though I wear skinny jeans me and my girl have been together for 2 and a half years. Pretty sure I'm not gay.

That thing is called.... a condom pocket...??
I would rather see a pic of the scratch than some jeans. IMO
Any pics of scratch?
