Charge and use USB Host at the same time - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to charge and connect a portable hard drive at the same time. I want to use a Y-cable like http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009YPYORM/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?tag=vglnk-c1061-20this. I know there is a special kernel for Nexus 7 that enables charging mode even if host cable is connected. Is this possible for Nexus 10? Or should I order the USB to Pogo cable instead?

I'm sure it would be possible since it has been done with the N7, but I havent seen anything yet. I would imagine the demand for something like this is pretty low with the POGO charger that is available.

The benefit (if any) with the y-cable would be that the adapter is powering the hard drive and not the Nexus. However I guess it's no real benefit.

[Q] USB OTG - how?

Hello, I've built a USB Y-Cable myself, I plugged a USB stick in without powering it... So the nexus alone wasn't capable of powering it... I plugged the other site into the wall socket... The nexus crashed somehow and it showed a black screen... I immediately plugged it out and turned the nexus on. Still working and charging also works... Hopefully nothing was damaged. Does anybody know what went wrong?
Was there any kind of resistor preventing from pushing current back into the nexus thru the cable? Because that could've been what happened and if it was , you might want to be careful not to fry it! Why going thru all that trouble instead , If you want to power a HDD you might want to get a USB hub for that. There like 5 bucks on eBay.

No I dont think there was any resistor... It still works, what could be broken? Yeah I've got tons of them at home but lazy me...
OTG cables are supposed to be a bit special. A stick should be no problem to power from the Nexus. Even portable harddrives work. If the otg cable is correct the Nexus usb port should be put in host mode which then feed your stick with power. If it does not power the stick, host mode is probably not active and it probably will not work anyway. The kernel needs to be patched to allow host mode and possibility to charge at the same time. There is a patched kernel for Nexus 7 for Cm10. I have looked for this myself for my Nexus 10 since I want to power a portable harddrive and charge from my car charge.

Safe to use another outlet adaptor with higher Voltage/Amp?

I recently just bought a tablet and i wanted to just carry around 1 USB outlet adaptor instead of 2,
so im wondering if it is safe to use the tablet adaptor (5.3V/2A) for my nexus 4 (stock adaptor 5.0V/1.2A).
Thanks!
I wouldn't recommend it. Stick with the Nexus 4 adapter. While you might think they are very identical; just because it charges ur device doesn't mean you should use it. Different smartphones and tablets have different volt requirements; too many volts from the charger and the gadget fries, too few and the device will take forever to charge.

6p charging for new owners not familiar with Type C

I know there have been a lot of threads about usb-c and cables that aren't up to spec, etc. I haven't seen what can be used without any concerns for damage though.
Can a Google approved USB c to USB a cable be used with any computer USB connection?
Can the same cable be used with any USB a charger such as iPad, iPhone, Moto X, Nexus 7, etc?
I'm not concerned as much about the rapid charge, but do want to make sure I don't use anything that could damage the phone, host device (computer), or be a big fire risk.
Thanks,
Rick

Basically a to c supplied in the box will work on any charger and pc USB port.
I also recommend anker usb c to a cable which has the same standard as Google and charges at max supported rate by the output.

Thanks, I also bought an additional USB C to A from Google. It's nice to have a few on hand.

I do not have USB Type-C to usb 2.0 converter

You mean you didn't get the red/white USB charger/data-cable that comes with the phone??? That one is USB C in one end and normal USB 2.0 in other end and gets you going with TWRP and Boeffla while waiting for 100% working Cyanogenmod. ?

Just plug the other end of your charging cable to usb port ?
You mean USB type C to USB type A right? Both ends are USB 2.0 anyway, the supplied cable will connect your phone to any USB port on your PC.

First of all, our phone does not support USB 3.0 speedwise, also USB 3.0 cables are backwards compatible with the 2.0 interface. So yes, you already have the cable you need. ?

USB is backwards compatible with older standards, such as 2 being backwards compatible with 1, 3 being backwards compatible with 2 and 1, etc. Obviously it depends more on the physical connection (such as type A, B, C).

Slow charge

Whenever I charge my Nexus 6p via the given wall charger it charges my phone super quick which is super awesome but whenever I charge it through USB PC or charger and USB it charges it very slow...
Yes it will.

Nothing strange with it, it all depends on the current the pc or charger can output.
The original N6P's charger delivers 3A, while most USB wall chargers output 1A, and PCs USB ports 0.5A.
The charging speed will vary accordingly, just check the specs of the charger you use, its max current is specified on one of its sides.
