[Q] Watch Nexus 4 HDMI videos on TV - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have just purchased this SlimPort Micro USB to HDMI adapter for my N4 on Amazon.
(I'm new to XDA so I can't yet post links, but if you YouTube "SlimPort Hands on with Google Nexus 4" there's a great demo of the product.)
While I'm waiting for it to arrive, I've been messing around with my videos and am trying to copy my HD videos, TV shows, movies etc. from my computer onto my Nexus 4. I'm having trouble doing so and this is why I'm here. Any help regarding my problem would be great! Basically all I need to do is find a way to transfer a HD video from my computer to my N4 and then be able to watch it both on my device and through my TV using the SlimPort adapter in perfect HD.
Thanks in advance,
Kev

*EDIT*
Last night I thought maybe the format of my videos is not supported by the N4 so I converted one into MP4 - which took an extremely long time for a 50 minute long video and then I just copied it into the "Movies" folder of the N4 and it plays fine through the gallery and the quality is brilliant. So now I'm just wondering if this will look just as good on my TV. Also, I've got tonnes of videos on my computer so is there any quicker way to convert them into MP4 or any other format supported by the N4? All I'll be doing is copying it onto the device, watching it on through my TV and then deleting it off the device.
Thanks again.

You shouldn't have to convert anything. Download aftermarket video players such as: DICE Player or MX Video Player.

After Copying Video to SD Card, Only Playing Audio / No Video

I have DVD Fab 7 and have been using that to covert files for awhile now for friends phones and PS3's and things like that.
I took a Blu-Ray today and used the option to covert to MP4 file. I successfully did it and did confirm it works and plays on the computer. However when i transfer it over, both the Windows Media Player and streaming media player will recognize it as a MP4 file, but only play the audio and no video.
Is it because a Blu-Ray movie is too high of a resolution? There wasn't an option to convert the resolution so i don't know.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks
did you try core or tcpmp?
I had TCPMP on there but never used it. It would never stream any movies smoothly, so I took it off. Maybe I'll give it another shot and see if that does anything. It was just way too glitchy on both Transformer movies so I took it off.
keep tcpmp and try some different playback settings
I remember back in 06 it ran a mkv file of the big o at 244 mb on a samsung i730
trust me when I say this - its powerful if its set up right
I just installed the TCPMP player and it won't even open the movie. As soon as I select it, the player closes and immediately goes back to the home screen. I'm still trying to find all the settings to adjust and see if maybe there is something there I need to change.
did you change the blu ray resolution? I know you said you converted it to mp4 but on my tp2 one huge issue was playing hi def movies. I got sound but I never got anything else...it just seems similar
actually it happened when I downloaded a higher quality benjamin button movie...
and ghost int he shell individual 7 3 hour movie
have you tried an 800x480 res?
Yeah I'm pretty sure the resolution is the problem. I found a converter that makes it 800x480 and currently going through the conversion process now. Hopefully that will help.
oh it will =)
help monumentously!
good luck!
Update: Even after setting the resolution correctly when ripping the BluRay to 800x480, I still cant' get any video from any of the players.
I'm trying a regular DVD now to see if I can get that right and go from there. Any other suggestions?

Playing VOB files on the Acer A500

Is there any application that can play VOB files (DVD) files on the A500?
I know that there are conversion programs, such as Handbrake, but the conversion process takes a long time.
Would it be simpler just to copy VOB files (they have to be unprotected first) on to the SD card or USB stick, and then play it.

You can try apps like Rock Player, MoboPlayer, Vital Player(?), and etc. I've never tried playing VOB files and don't remember anyone asking if it'll work. So you can try if you want to, but I'm doubting it'll work without converting it.
Basically, VOB is another form of MPEG-2 PS. So there shouldn't be any problem playing VOB files.
If the VOB files are not recognized, you can try rename them to .MPG.
I don't have VOB now, so I can't test. Give them a try, and please report back.
Success!
Smooth video and good sound quality. Did not need to rename files. Simple copy from PC to A500.
Copied two sets of DVDs, i.e. the VOB Folders (VIDEO_TS) across to the A500 using the USB cable.
1) First DVD was a tennis match with a file size of 3.2GB
Took about 12 minutes to transfer the VIDEO_TS folder
- Rockplayer - played the without any problems
- Moboplayer - ditto
- Vplayer - ditto
But, with all three applications, I could not easily move about in the video, for example by dragging the marker that showed the place in the video. The fast forward button would send the marker to the end of the video.
2) Second DVD was a musical concert with a file size of 5.8GB
Took about 18 minutes to copy the VIDEO_TS folder over to the A500
- Rockplay - got stumped and kept asking me to 'Please choose audio track'. But after a couple of press of the Play button, the video began to play.
- Vplayer - could not get this to play the video.
- Moboplay was the best. It moved all the VOB files to the top of the directory and played the selected file without any problems.
While the file transfer did take a while, it sure beats encoding the video into another format. Hate to think how long it would take to encode the 5.8GB file in (2) above.
Now, if only VLC would bring out their player for Android.
I've been using moboplayer for this. Seems to play everything I throw at it, except for 720p MKVs(which just happen to compose about half my media...)
Same issue here. Have a good sized library of 1080p and 720p mkv's with some HD mp4's that I threw in for S&G's. None of them want to play right at all. I would have figured with the plug-in for A7 that Xoom people were reporting was the right one for Moboplayer, we'd at least have 720p capability, but nope. And I spent the whopping $10 for a micro to std HDMI cable at Fry's so I can use it as movie player at the hotels while I'm getting jet lag week to week.
1280x536 (what's considered 720p) AVI's are the best I can do so far.

536 is a lot closer to 480p if you add in overscan.

I'd agree with you, if the some dozen or so files I have claiming 720p didn't fall into something real close to the 1280x536 range. Thinking it could just be the aspect ratio difference between 16:9 and 16:10 that would give us this--only speculating.
Actually I would absolutely love the ability to feed out 1080p out the hdmi port and leave the main display alone. Give us a portable media center device in the process.
That’s exactly the reason why I am still considering getting the SGS II instead of a HC tab.

[Q] Nexus 7 32gig, mkv 1080p playback DTS and NTFS support

Hello all
This is my first post, I was going to purchase the new Nexus 7 32gig version which just came out in the UK. I mainly want it to view movies on as I do a lot of travelling. I rip my blu rays into mkv h264 format and they are around 8-10gigs with HD audio.
So my questions are, what is the best player? from searching around and looking on youtube I see different answers, Diceplayer,Mx Player and Bs player. Dice player seems to get a lot of positive results...but....
....some of my movies have DTS sound which i hear the latest Dice and Mx player no longer support. Is there a way to get a previous version of Say Dice player and if so how do I install it if not via the app store?
My last question is I saw recently that Dice player now supports NTFS formatted Usb sticks, I will need this as the movies are quite large, so is there a version of Dice which has DTS support AND NTFS support and how would i go about getting and installing.
Thanks for reading, and any help is greatly appreciated

You sideload them onto the device. Copy the .apk files for the programs you wish to install to the device, then use a file manager (ES file manager, Astro, etc) and install them. You need to enable the option to allow installation of apps from unknown sources (Settings -> Security).
You'll have to try with your own files to see what works best for you as a player. Everyone has their preferences.
I don't know the answer to your questions about dice. You'll have to try to see.
I would rip blurays for N7 with different settings. Playing a 10Gb 1080P mkv with 5000 kbps bitrate + DTS is kind of an overkill for a 7" device.. Just rip them around 2000Mbit/s AC3 and you'll be satisfied for both size and video quality..
I know its not an answer to your question, but just wanted to give some advice..

Thanks for the reply
I should have said in my original post, that I have already ripped lots of my movies as mkv, 10 gig etc for my western digital device. I didnt want to have to re-convert them for the nexus or support two formats. Im happy with the mkv rips i have and I wanted to just keep one file format for them all.
But thanks again for replying

Great, thanks for the info I will try if i get one
As far as players go BSplayer free will handle mkv's with DTS that's what I'm using works great. I don't know about NTSF being compatible. You can always copy some over to a usb drive formated in fat32...
Hope that helps a bit.

[Q] Stream/Watch 1080p .ts file

I am trying to stream media from my Humax HDR-FOX T2 through DLNA.
I can stream SD stuff fine through DLNA however HD(1080p) either lags or doesn't even make it onto the 2nd frame dependant what video player app I try, so I was wondering if anyone knew a combination that works well on the nexus 7?
Leading on from the last question, i'm wondering if its possibly just the data rate over WiFi being too much? I've copied the file I was trying to view and the data rate is 7233kbps at 25fps so I would have thought there should be no reason for it to not work.
So I went ahead tried copying it onto the actual nexus and it plays much smoother but still not the full 25fps and i've only managed to get 10 seconds into the video before the player(DICE player and MX Player both seem to do this) backs out to the media list again, then there is V player which simply refuses to load it at all and just gets stuck on loading.
Anyone got any advice? My device isn't rooted but if it means I can stream from my humax or at least watch 1080p copied onto it then I'm willing to root.
The file type I'm trying to watch is a .ts mpeg 2 file
Thanks in advance
