[Q] Nexus 7 charging problems. - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

One of my clients recently purchased a Nexus 7. Two days after opening the box he said it would no longer charge. Not only that but he says he got a "Power surge on USB hub" error when he pluged it into his Windows 7 computer. I thought that was weird and asked him to bring it in so I could have a look at it. I plugged it into a USB port on my work computer and I got the same error. Not only did I get the error, but it took out one of the USB hubs on the motherboard. I asked the customer to check his computer and he had the same issue, the USB port he used to plug the Nexus 7 no longer worked.
I've tried everything to get the ports working again, reinstalled drivers, etc... with no luck. I'm of the opinion that the onboard USB hub on both computers for the non-working ports are dead. Anyway, I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else? I'm sure the "we're not liable for damage" clause will cover Google/ASUS ass, but if someone has had the problem, did they have any luck getting Google or ASUS to fix their computers?
Thanks

[Q] usb cable problems

my windows 7 64 bit computer wont connect to the phone. spent 3 hours doing everything and it always gives me unknown device and driver install failed. The only thing i have not tried is to plug it into the back USB ports as sugested in another thread,I am at work now, but I also have 3 different micro usb cables in front of me and only the one that came with the phone works on one of the front usb ports and in the rear ports on my work XP computer. is there something special about the samsung cable? the 2 other micro USB cables work for data in my old US crapullar banter phone all day long. samsung tech told me to reset the phone and try again or exchange it for a new one. now I have to redo all my crap on my phone. liked the phone and was worth breaking a contract with us crapullar that i had for 10 years till now.
I find the drivers are finicky.
I can plug it into my computer (both work and home; Win7 32/Win7 64) and sometimes it finds it and sometimes it doesn't.
When it doesn't, I simply unplug the usb from the phone and plug it back up.
When that doesn't work, I will plug it in and then reboot the phone. That almost always does it.
When that doesn't do it, I will unplug it, turn on or off USB Debugging mode.
I've never had to uninstall/reinstall drivers for this phone. The computer installed everything automatically.
edit: The one thing I did find, however, is that with my old Moment USB cable, it won't charge properly. It always says 100% charge after about 5 minutes even if the phone was dead. So I don't listen to that one and just use it for data transfer when I'm not using Dropbox.
i can charge the phone no problem but the data is the problem. tried everything you said last night with a couple of samsung techs even the next level tech
should be a sticky. need to use rear USB ports for this phone because they are the only ones that work most of the time, and phone Micro USB jack is the cheapest jack ever. dont expect much out of it now, being sprints top of the line phone and all.

USB Connection fix

Hey Everybody, I have been having problems connecting my wife's Fascinate to any of the 3 pc's in our home and was ready to throw it out the window. I had tried everything from installing new drivers, usb debugging etc but nothing seemed to work for me. The phone would charge but would not connect to the pc. There is a small tab inside of the USB port that is very fragile and can be bent easily. I gently bent the tab towards the center of the USB port and after two weeks of frustration, the phone connected and mounted the SD card and I am now running superclean rom. Not sure if this is a fix for every case but it's something to try if you have tried everything else.
Is there any way you could get a picture of this tab or describe it a little more? I have the same usb issue, but I'm not sure I see any tab in the usb port.
I noticed this too, winows 7 says USB not detected, but if I keep the cable into my phone and reboot my phone it seems to pick it up

[Q] USB connection not working

Hello everyone, this is my first post and it´s about my Defy, which, for some reason, the USB port does not work to access the phone and/or the SD Card.
1: I did a soft and hard reset and the problem persists.
2: The phone does not show up on the device manager under Windows so not even an error message saying "Device not recognized" or something. Also, it won´t show up in Ubuntu.
3. The "Connect your charger" message shows up all the time.
4. No notification in the phone when plugged to the PC .
5. Even though I can´t access the phone from the PC, I still can´t charge it through the USB port.
6. I can connect/access the phone and SD Card using Wi-Fi (Motorola Phone Portal) but not USB. I can see "Plug in USB to launch" in Phone Portal but cannot press the button, only the one referring to Wi-Fi.
PS: This is my second Defy, the first one got the same problem so I got a new one... sadly, the it happened again.
PS2: I wonder if a USB 3.0 port has to do with anything? It´s the only thing that I noticed before the USB stopped working.
Any help or hint is greatly appreciated.
well, i don't think it's an usb3 problem ...
to be sure you could try to connect your phone with an older usb2 port computer ...
is the phone charging on wall charger and usb-cable ???
if not, it really sounds like a hardware failure ... then i would send it to customer service and tell them that there is the same problem again .. maybe the just repaired something and it's faulty again ... be sure, that they are changing the faulty things ...
if your phone is charging on wall charger, it could be that it is an problem with your pc ... try another one ...

1. I mentioned the USB 3.0 port because it was the only common thing just before the usb conection stopped working.
2. The phone charges normally using the wall charger or usb (2.0, 3.0) cable through the PC.
3. It does not matter what PC is connected to or the OS (Ubuntu, Win7)/
Thanks for the response!
It is possible to brick it. Wtih some phone's it seems to be a common error for usb ports to be blown.
Could also be the cable... My cable that came with the defy was already snatched after a few months. My screen started going on and of when I was charging it.

Is there a way to check for faulty hardware-related issues?
just test different cables, computers or even mobiles ... then you will see, what is faulty

What I meant was some software that check or even some kind of physical device.
Anyway, I know it´s not the cable or PC faulty but the phone itself. But I want to confirm if it´s software or hardware related and if there´s a fix.
Thanks!
Try using USB with logcat open. You might see something in the log that will tell you what's happening

USB connector - OTG and pc mass storage not working.

I've had my S8 for about 8 months now, pretty happy with the phone. Let me preface this and say I was with Verizon when I got this phone, a few months ago I decided to cut ties and go with Straight Talk as the service was less expensive. Over the last few weeks I have had trouble with the USB mass storage and OTG adapter not working at all, I am using the OEM pieces that came the phone. I go to plug in the cable or the OTG and my phone starts doing the USB connect/disconnect notification. At this point I am thinking of calling Samsung to see if I can get the port repaired under warranty, I think its weird that the OTG and cable are not working to transfer files or connect devices other than the charger. I have reset the settings on the phone, installed Samsung's mobile device driver on my pc (WIN 7 Ultimate x64) , no luck. Anybody run into this issue?
try another pc or get charging port repaired if it ain't charging properly

Called Samsung, they are having me take it to a UBreakiFix place for their technicians to look at it. They think it could be corrupt software or damaged charging port. It's still under warranty so hopefully they can fix it without having to refurb the phone.
Got it fixed, replaced the port. Phone had a small corner crack in the screen they said Samsung wouldn't warranty the port. Gonna call them about that.

My phone won't recognize being connected to any computers after trying to usb tether

Hi all, I haven't been here for a while now, but I figure that this is the best place to put my issue besides maybe reddit. So I was trying to activate USB tethering yesterday as i do a lot in order to play some games on my computer since i don't have access to any ethernet, and something went wrong and it didn't activate despite having hit the switch on the phone. I unplugged my phone to turn it off since my computer hadn't recognized the tethering and tried to activate it again, but this time my phone only made the charging noise and wasn't picking up my computer at all. I then restarted my phone to see if that was the issue and got the same result. I then tried to plug it into my laptop to see if my computer was the problem and it did the same thing.
Today I tried plugging my phone into my laptop with my usb-c to usb-c cable (instead of my go-to usb-c to usb-a cable that came with the phone) and got some signs of life from the laptop, it makes the sound that says its plugged in, but the phone still only charges and the laptop picks up my phone as "USB root hub (USB 3.0)" and "Intel USB 3.1 eXtensible Host controller-1.10 (Microsoft)" in device manager. I also just tried clearing the cache in recovery but nothing has changed. Does anyone know what's going on here and how I can fix it?
Unrooted (duh), AT&T model (sorry idk the model numbers like i used to), latest updates and security patches etc
EDIT: power cycled it (let it die and turned it back on a few times until it wouldn't turn on again) and charged it back up again and that seems to have fixed my issue.
