Google Hangout stretched video on Nexus 4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So for whatever reason my video is stretched vertically in portrait and horizontally on landscape whenever I'm using Google Hangouts with the front facing camera. I'm going to test with other video chat services like Skype but I'm wondering why that's happening.
I'm not sure whether it's hardware or software but I'd suspect the latter. I'm already rooted so I might just flash a new ROM like PA 2.9 to see if that fixes it. Or can I just flash the camera app again? Any ideas?

I think it's software, not like it when you use Gtalk, hopefully sort it in next update.

Same thing here.. I look weird and all long
But yea i think it is software bug where it is trying to get the resolution of the camera app.

Oh good it's not just me.
I'm relieved

I can see this with both the front and rear-facing cameras. Initially I thought it was my imagination, so I took a couple of screen-grabs of the video with a coin in shot and drew a true circle (blue) and the now-elliptical coin outline (red) over the top.
The images confirm that video in Google Plus hangouts is definitely stretched. Don't see any issue in the regular camera, and GTalk video also looked OK to a superficial check.

Nothing to add except that it is happening for me as well...

Same thing here.

Going to keep an eye out if it's fixed in 4.2.2

I am on 4.2.2 and it's not fixed yet.

I can't believe this hasn't been fixed! Use hangouts a lot, it's a software fix as gtalk app is fine....... No one in the Google house must not be using hangouts on a Nexus 4!

Question I want to ask, are people getting unclear audio on hangouts or that the other side gets echo's? Compare to the iPad version which seems to be fine I get a lot of problems on the Nexus 10 and 4.

Yep, unclear and echoes.....

Did anyone find a fix for this? or know of the problem?

It is a defect for the Nexus 4 only. Just got to be patient for Google to fix it in their App. Wait until after Google I/O

I have 2 questions....

OK, first off let me start by saying that this tablet is amazing. For 200 bucks it cannot be beat. I am very happy with my purchase.
My first question is just out of curiosity, I remember when I was watching the reviews for the nexus 7 when it was first announced, When you booted up the device it had a really cool splash screen that had an animation that went from top to bottom I'm not sure if any of you remember it. Was this removed because I do not have this splash screen on my device. Mine is just the big glowing X.
My second question is when I go into google now I noticed in a lot of screenshots the background on the top menu portion would change depending on your location. I live in new york and I happen to come across a screenshot of someone's google now and it had the menu with the brooklyn bridge on it which looks pretty awesome. unfortunately mine only has mountains which is what it came with by default. I know it depends on location but if I live in new york why isn't it changing my background in the menu? I have all of my location services active so I don't think that's the problem. Is there anyway I could push this over to my device. Thanks in advance.

the splash screen you referred to might be the developers version of nexus 7..i think
The new splashcreen is stock jelly bean.

from the comments on that video:
This is the old one. They removed it after the OTA. The OTA was released a couple of hours after the tablets were given out. I pulled the animation as soon as I turned that sucker on. I have made it available on Aniboot ( play.google.com/store/apps/det*ails?id=com.socaldevs.aniboot ) It currently is on both 1280x720 and 1280x800 devices, soon to be tested on 1024x800 devices. App needs root, but its completely worth it. Go check it out!

Download the Camera launcher app for Nexus 7 and see if it works from there.

In skype you have to go into settings then at the bottom somewhere there is a tick box that says enable video calling, it is not in ticked by default because of something about it not being perfect yet, works well for me tho.. Not sure about tango.
Edit: if you wanna use the front cam to just take pics normally and for some reason you can't access the stock app the best way is to just download a third party camera app, bought vignette on sale today and that works perfectly too.

Sounds like you have a faulty camera. Probably you want to get a new Nexus 7.

Depends, ask your store or google. But it is alright if it is with google, you will get your new device before sending the old one
But anyway, try to factory reset or flash the stock rom before.

I got "Cannot connect to camera" message in all camera apps on Nexus 7 when running Skype in the background. The other apps started working again when I killed Skype. Its not your tablet thats broken -- its Skype.
Camera is not working in some custom ROMs afaik

You only have one camera. Skype will reserve it, and no other app can get to it if Skype is running in the background. Be aware of what you actually have running.

Play Store App flickers when downloading. Anybody?

I'm not sure if this has been discussed or not on the forms here. This is kind of hard to explain..Whenever I'm browsing in the Play Store app on the N10, during a download the app itself flickers (almost like its refreshing) whenever the percentage moves during the downloading process. This has happened way before the updates to the Play Store app as well. I'm running CM 10.1 (Nightly) and the issue is still there. This was one of the first things I noticed when I was running stock too. I was kind of hoping that Play Store Version 4.0.26 fixed it but I guess not.
Has anybody noticed this issue? I highly doubt this a hardware related issue. Games seem to run awesome on it.
Any ideas?
- Brian
I have had the same issue since I got mine in December, running stock.
I've had this issue under JB 4.2 and ICS 4.0 on an Acer a500 and the Nexus N10, no fix found yet.
I get this too… it seems to me like a refresh issue, like the Play Store is trying to load up other images or something. Since no other app does this, I'm pretty sure it's just an app issue.
I've seen it on every rom, every version of the play Store... It may be the refresh for the download causing issues

Yes, because it makes scrolling through 'My Apps' a royal PITA. And sometimes, if its particularly fickle, it keeps returning to one single app over and over.
Thanks for the reply back guys. I didn't know if it was a hardware related or if its just a bug in the app itself. I see that version 4.0,27 got released today. Hopefully this will help!
@bahehs..Do you have jokes or something? I remember my first beer.

Still flickers for me, but at least it doesn't reset to the top of the list every time it flickers now.
Same issue when I'm viewing all my apps during download. Since I can now scroll through my apps during download I don't worry about it much anymore.

When I'm updating multiple apps, it will keep refreshing the first one to the point that I can't click on the next app in line to be updated, because I want to see what the new update has added or changed.
I have the same issue (flickering shop) on my Nexus 7. I've noticed that it happens while downloading larger files, especially games. Sometimes it freezes Google Play completely.
So far I haven't noticed it on my Nexus 10. (But it has different version of Google Play, as far as I can tell).
The latest play store 4.xx resolved my flickers.

Yup, flashing, barely able to see what was going on be it downloading an app or copying a film from a flash drive. Installed AOPK and it is fixed, one solid moving bar as it ought to be.
Mine does this as well. I just leave the play store so I don't have to deal with it. Completely stock.
I get this with paranoid android, but had it before changing. It not only flickers, but when I'm downloading, say, Gmail, and go to another app while in the "My Apps" view, it will revert back to Gmail. Very annoying.

Gallery issue?

Hi guys, I've been searching the Web for a while now for this problem and I hope I'm not the only one with it. But since yesterday when I'm on gallery the preview at the bottom of the screen doesn't disappear! If you play a video the play buttons don't go anywhere either. Is there anyone else with this issue?

Yep, same here. I was about to make a thread for it, but found yours. The preview at the bottom, and toolbar at the top NEVER disappear, no matter what I've tried. Also, when making photo selections, a woman's voice tells me that the "check box is checked" I can't find that setting anywhere either. Super annoying.
What the deuce?
Haha even restarts don't help =/ and yeah the woman is hilarious but creepy! I would love to ask Samsung but would have no idea where to start!

I was having this exact same problem and finally figured out what was causing it, at least for me. I installed NoLED and turned it on under accessibility. I didn't realize the connection at the time but then I noticed that the top and bottom overlays in the gallery wouldn't go away. I also got the freaky voice, even when opening websites. Somehow I correlated the issue as to having started after I installed NoLED. After I uninstalled it my gallery sent back to normal. It was either an issue with the app or having given it access under accessibility. Hope this helps.

Gallery works fine on my S4. I have several 100 pictures on it in lots of different folders, and it works great for all of them. Video playback is fine too, FWIW.

That is pretty weird. Should of known it was light flow! Is there any way to report this to Samsung? At least we have found the fix. Thank you guys a lot!

Anyone knows a better camera app?

I come from a Galaxy S and every time I ser the sh*t of camera app is on AOSP... Dotes anyone know a port from other phone or a better camera app.
Please dont spam saying that we have the best camera app.

AOSP are the only ones that work with little flaws. Try searching for camera apps here but most of them have a lot of extra features which we might not find useful.

Seems to me you're looking for Samsung's signature slightly-exaggerated-color-depth-and-out-of-control-shadow thing, which is pretty common in people coming from a Galaxy phone. I'd recommend Vignette on GPlay; that app will get you the picture quality you're looking for.
Stock camera is solid if you ask me and I take high-end photographs for a living, haha--no fluff no nonsense, it's all in the know-how etc
