[Q] Nexus 7 performance on games - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everybody. I have read in a lot of forums here in xda that with rasbeanjelly and Franco.kernel or with other custom ROMs, they achieve to have no lag at games such as NFS most wanted or GTA vice city at max settings... Or have scores on quadrant benchmarks such as 7000+. The highest I could get is 5000, with rasbeanjelly and Franco.kernel/trinity kernel. Also in the games above, I have lag.. 20-25 fps. How is that possible? What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance

Tegra 3 is the issue
If I helped out, hit the thanks button.

So how in other users it performs well and in my n7 not? tegra 3 is a quad core and I think it could perform better than a dual core... Such as gs2 or galaxy nexus, I think that the problem is the opt. of the apps.. However as I said others have no lag, how is that possible?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

If all apps were optimized, it would be great. Since most aren't, they are junk. Note 2 and s3 processor dont need apps to be optimized. Only tegra 3. Others have flashed custom kernels and roms to improve performance but most aren't that great.
If I helped out, hit the thanks button.

You are right about the note II and s3.. As for my problem, i have also installed the same ROM and kernel the spesific person installed on his nexus 7 who reported that he has no lag.. (And he wasn't the only one:/) what am I doing wrong?

Depends on someone's perception really. My friend's S3 has no lag playing vice city or nfs:mw, but my nexus 7 has lower framerates (in the case of nfs:mw) and stutter (in vice city), even after overclocking the GPU.
It's because the games haven't been optimized properly for tegra 3. But if you play THD games, you'll see they look awesome and are smooth.
I've noticed something else. Ever since I updated my nexus 7 to 4.2, it has been stuttering at times (sliding through the app drawer and homescreen) and some apps take longer than usual to load up (like the email client). It was silky smooth when I first got it.
Anyone else notice it too? I'm thinking of reflashing the whole stock 4.2 ROM again...or is it just a 4.2 issue?

I have downloaded some THD games such as shadowgun and dead trigger.. And it was noticeably much more smoother and with better graphics.. But the next day I tried dead trigger on an iPhone 5.. And it was 47748 times smoother:/ I am really annoyed that developers don't seem to care that much for applications on Android

Yeah I have p.m.ed someone but never got an answer...

tegra 3 is good. better than s3 or s4 but you must wait till be optimized. half year....i think. and then it will be ultra smooth on any game and on games you mentioned. its new device. needs time.
if you dont like ****ty performance sell it like me or wait till real talented developer buy it for yourself
when i buy qualcomm s3 device it was more laggy than s1 but half year after its faster than tegra3 now. so choice is yours. no one kernel or rom now brings more performance. try miui rom or sparksco saber. its best now. other developers know **** about performance and stability

Okay thanks!

[Q] Dungeon Defenders on 2.3

Hello guys,
I recently purchased a game called Dungeon Defenders which is based on unreal3 engine. Sadly, it is kinda choppy on Evo.
I am running CM 6.1.2 with cm6-snap-v7.5-havs925 kernel.
Does anybody tried the DD on 2.3 ROM?
i am just wondering if the update will make the game less laggy.
I just played it for a bit on 2.3, and it seemed smoother. Now this could totally be my imagination, but before, when there were a number of baddies on the screen, I would get bad lag, but I didn't notice it on 2.3. There might still be some slight lag, but it seemed much better. If I get a chance to play for a more extended time, I'll report back.

Do you have turbo mode on? Since u have the snap kernel, I'm curious to see if it makes a difference in that game.
edited due to my stupidity.

I would also love to know weather turbo has an affect on gaming.
noob question but what is turbo mode? and how can i get it

It shouldn't. Doesn't effect the GPU. So far there's nothing that can upclock the GPU. Probably the closest thing to improcing the GPU is implementing the new 2.3.3 Nexus One GPU drivers but I don't think that Google/HTC has released the source yet.

Its part of snap kernel. I wouldn't bother though - its just some modifications that mostly trick quadrant into benching higher. Actual real use performance will be the same.

Ics on nexus running so smooth

Is the world aware how good ics is is and how well it runs on the nexus s. Is even the android community aware. This phone needs a new review just because of pics. Probably not but man I got this phone for 100 dollars off Craigslist and man is this a hidden gem. This is the perfect phone for most people.
Man I wish my epic touch had pure ics on it right now.

I agree, this phone was nice with GB but with ICS this machine is amazing. The best part about it is that this is only the begining
Hopefully thismeans we will be the fixed icsics

I'm quite curious though, is the new smoothness due to the forced gpu rendering? Is anyone runnning stock ICS but without 'forced gpu rendering' checked in dev settings that can give some feedback on its smoothness? I do know that scrolling anywhere now is much smoother compared to GB, almost as if animations were running in a priority thread like they do in fruit phones.
I leave hardware accel off and it is still exceptionally smooth, though not AS much with the stock kernel. Cannot notice much difference between the two with GLaDOS.
I'm pretty much in agreement with the thread starter. The ICS upgrade is amazing. Very smooth and fast. Everything seems so much better just as any upgrade should be. And also the new UI and graphics are great.
Its funny reading everywhere now about just about every handset waiting and or crying for ICS update. Most won't see it till the second half of next year.
I love my nexus even more than ever.

also I'm running stock ICS rom with stock kernel...the kernel has been slightly modified for voodoo support.
Getting great battery life too. Thankfully none of the infamous 'android OS bug' so far.

Agreed, ics kicks a$$.
A few things that could have been included that weren't, lucky for us those there's the nova launcher that's shaping up really nice and adds what ics should have had in the first place.
I'm running my phone on background process limit of x3 and no gpu redering with nova launcher and it's amazingly fast and smooth with no lag whatsoever, even when entering the app drawer.
As it's been said, things will only get better and I also think the Nexus S needs new reviews doing on it.

Ive been using the stock ICS kernel modified for voodoo support. Its in the stock ICS kernel thread started by eugene373 in the nexus s development forums.
I made sure to wipe cache and the dalvik cache before installation. Im at 17 hours now with battery still at 32 percent with almost 2 hours screen on.

It blows my mind to think of what will happen in the next six months with this phone. I have a feeling the nexus might go back into production if it keeps getting better.
It kills me my girlfriend has no idea what she is using.

It really is. I love my NS even more with ICS, altough my experience with it in Gingerbread has only been about 2 weeks. Previously I was using Gingerbread (CM7) in a ZTE Blade and, as an interaction experience (regarding solely the OS), ICS beats it to a pulp. Now it's a waiting game until all the quirks are solved
has anyone tried the microbes live wallpaper. Im using stock ICS, stock kernel, non-rooted and it is just laggy as hell. Rest of the phone is ok, but i wouldnt call it buttery smooth
The microbes live wallpaper is definitely more hardware intensive than most of the others. It would likely be -slightly- better with a different kernel, but i can't see the Nexus S being powerful enough to breeze through it.
Live wallpapers for me use too much battery for too little eyecandy, though to each their own.

At first I thought so too, but now I'm not so sure. It wasn't this bad in gjngerbread albeit 2.3 seemed a lot lighter and less ram intensive than ics. Also I ran the microbes lwp on my old g2 and it ran a lot better than my nexus s. I think its more of a software issue but I'm no dev.

No, you may have gremlins living in your device. They feed off the cpu, causing lag. I recommend sacrificing a virgin to them.

Mine was fast out of box, then I started installing stuff and it got slow. I disabled system apps I don't use, and that sped it up some. (go into Settings>Apps>All and click any you don't currently use and un-install the updates and disable them. You can always re-enable them later.) Also I uninstalled apps like Facebook which always run (just create a short-cut in the web browser).
Then I rooted and installed CM9 and it's all zip-a-de-doo-da.
Mine was slightly laggy, im on cm9 with metallikernel and it is smooth now

I think it should because of the GPU & CPU speed of galaxy tab. As we know p5100 using an powervr GPU. NVIDIA Tegra should be better than powervr. But if you want to increase the speed of your tab try to use custom ROM and OC. Or you can sell your tab and buy a new lower price tab like Transformer, Motorola Xoom, or Sony S tablet which powered by Tegra GPU that could run the graphics smoothly :fingers-crossed:

i think it's because the touchwiz, if you install a custom ROM like CM9 or 10, i guess it would work really smooth
I have the Tab 10.1 and Tab 10.1 2. Both are stock rooted but the Tab 1 is much smoother. The Tab 1 is on 4.0.4 and Tab 2 is on 4.0.3. Hopefully it gets better with an update.

Tab 2 have good custom rom support at XDA . but claims by many people very slow compare to other device due to TW .
jelly bean still lag and slow?
no have device ,just do some survey.
Try this. It saved my day

[Q] Gaming performance

How to improve gaming performance on Nexus 7?
Nova 3 multiplayer is pretty laggy,somemore i'm using a m-kernel a11 with 520mhz gpu overclock.
On android 4.1.2,smoothrom 4.1.
try trinity kernel, its a great gaming/performance kernel.

choose your rom wisely, some roms like aokp has heaps of features but it may slow your device down. others like leanrom has less features, but in turn you get very good performance from a much more stripped down system. also, i suggest you do a reboot before loading an extremely intensive game such as GTA Vice City. THD optimised games also improves performance compared to non-optimised games by Lameloft, cough, i mean gameloft
I have my nexus stock unrooted 4.2.1 and haven't had any problems with any games I've tried.

I vouch for Trinity Kernel.
OC to 1.7ghz and 520/600 mhz GPU
Just go stock for games no laggs

it should not lag, on my old note 2 which has a weaker chipset RR3 was smooth
undervolt the cpu, maybe its throttling
Also if you get NFS: Most Wanted, that should be constant 60 FPS too, tested it on my Nexus
