How about going to a store and comparing the screens?
Some prefer LCD, others AMOLED.
You obviously get stronger colours and better blacks with AMOLED, while the LCD isn't bad at all and I'd like to say it is a bit sharper than AMOLED.
Also, and this might be due to the fact that I'm used to LCD, but I always find the colors my friends SGS to be oversaturated, and slightly tinted.

hmmm twist in story
why so?
Personal preferences. AMOLED is good, but LCD ain't bad. Your computer screen is LCD. Try the Desire HD before you buy it.
The build quality of the DHD is very good. Some people complain about the plastic sim and battery covers, but these are necessary from RF engineering point of view (either you have alluminum back with plastic covers, or you have the whole back plastic - you decide which is better). Anyway, I didn't have any of the issues reported here - no sim cover misalignment, no proximity sensor issues (solved by the first OTA update AFAIK), no init bug (I keep USB debuging on just to be sure ), no nothing. Maybe, just maybe, my screen is tilted a little bit, but it might be my imagination playing tricks on me.
AMOLED vs. LCD is really down to the person who uses it. IMO the only good thing about AMOLED technology is the real black. Other than that, the larger viewing angle is unusable and the colours seem "wrong" to me.
Just a little warning - as you might know, the new 1.72 ROM can't be rooted (yet?), so if you intend to buy from a store, check the phone if it has the old 1.32 ROM, so you can root it and then go with the 1.72 root keeping update procedure.

DHD is a great phone. Love mine to bits. I've been trying to keep an AOSP rom on mine for a while now but keep coming back to Sense. Its just such a fantastic UI. Also the screen is fine. Colours are crisper on AMOLED but text is clearer on SLCD. The text display on AMOLED seems slightly pixelated and blurry to me
I think the S AMOLED screen is great but it's not as sharp. My DHD is sharper than my friends Galaxy S and it is noticable if you stare at both screens. Also after using the DHD the AMOLED seems to have a tint of purple not to mention it's whites never really look white. But boy are the blacks black, I cried a little when I compared. But the thing is the black on the DHD are good anyways.
I agree the dhd is the best phone i've owned, but like i said it just takes a while to get used to screen coming from amoled

I've got a SGS for about 5 months now i switched to DHD. Audio quality is ok but not as good as SGS. Other wise i love it so much as its all leg free with specially with Android Revolution HD rom. I found SLCD does show natural colours then SAMOLED when watching videos. Dolby Mobile sounds great when listening music through headset.
Go for it..
I got the DHD for 3 Days now and its ... omg i cant explain!
the best thing is, i am an android user since G1, and even better , i CAME from G1 ! i was like OMFG *mouth open*
nothing to complain but one thing: after using apps like "Talking Tom the Cat" and same stuff (gf's daughter loves it!) it starts FC such games. it loads the game, i see like 2 seconds of the animated "avatar" than it crashes. a restart fixed it. but after some starts of 2 or 3 other games like that, it happend again.
BUT ONLY with such games!
other games like dungeon defender, nova, exzeus aso run like hell and keep my mouth open!
i was like the little girl in Despicable Me when gettin the fluffy unicorn "ITS SO FLUFFYY!!" but i was like "ITS SO DAMN AWESOME!!"
sry, i am 27 but exited like a 5 year old on christmas
The DHD is far superior. Bigger screen, better build quality (bye bye cheap plastic, hello unibody aluminium), and faster hardware (latest Snapdragon and 768MB RAM vs. outdated Hummingbird and 512MB RAM).

I noticed exactly the same thing with my friends SGS.
The colors are all tinted blue/purple, but the blacks are wonderful.
SGS also has better digitizer (I read somewhere that is runs at 60hz whereas HTC runs at 50hz and iphone at 100hz, cant remember the source though), but you notice how things move better with your finger on the SGS, just slightly.
On the other hand, I notice random lags all the time on my friends SGS.
It's not an easy choice.
im using DHD now and its an awesome phone, the best that ive ever had.
I was coming from a HTC Magic upgrade, thus the difference is very significant.
However, if i owned a SGS, i wouldnt hv upgraded to a DHD to be honest. There will be a slightly better performance from the DHD compared to the SGS, but its not big enough to justify an upgrade IMO.
I wouldve waited next year, and see how those tegra 2 phones performs, and upgrade to one of them.
Ok -I just got my Galaxy S II here in the uk from phones4u (wouldn't really recommend them but they had it early. My previous Galaxy S which I had massive GPS problems with over almost every ROM and radio combination is eventually going on eBay.
I thought others here might be interested in the SII
Initial impressions are:
Wow - this thing is blazingly and surprisingly fast. I've seen reviews that say it's fast but when you use it - it simply refuses to slow down anywhere in the UI or apps. The Market for example is crazy fast and installing apps is a breeze.
TouchWiz 4 is really a huge improvement and the small changes here and there along with the speed mentioned abive make it a real pleasure to use. Can't as of yet replace the Messaging app link to GoSMS (my personal choice) - but maybe will be able to when root becomes available.
Now - a little background information: I'm very sensitive to colour and brightness uniformity variations and I have to say that over the past few years have had some issues with monitors, a Samsung TV and an iPhone 4 I sent back for problems I know others simply cannot see or simply don't consider "problems". I do - and for that reason I was astonished and delighted by the Super Amoled screen in my GPS defying Galaxy S. I literally love(d) that screen and it was crisp, sharp, large and beautiful with absolutely no colour shift or backlight issues (there isn't one!).
So when I found out that the Galaxy SII had a Super Amoled+ screen I was dribbling with anticipation.
When I turned on my brand-shiny-new Galaxy SII this afternoon however I noticed something I'd seen while toying with the first few SII's I'd handled in the phones4u shops but thought nothing of - the screen is slightly "muddy" although vibrant and there is a definite variation in either brightness or colour shift across the screen from top to bottom - especially visible (almost only visible) on solid colour backgrounds in apps and also Gmail. In know and will state in anticipation that most others wouldn't notice this. Having had my Galaxy S though which had a screen I consider virtually perfect - I was a bit surprised to find that this new SuperAmoled+ screen had a completely different colour temperature and exhibited what looked like colour shift from top to bottom. I was also very surprised that the screen did NOT look as sharp as the screen on my original Galaxy S because these Samoled+ screens are meant to be "sharper". I wonder what the pixel density is compared to the Samoled screens?
Also, when you tilt the phone, the colour of the screen shifts a lot more than the original Galaxy S. Hmmmm......
Anyway - after having just paid around (I am crazy I know) £500 for this phone I feel a little sick.
I LOVE the speed. I love the interface. I know and love Android. I'm surprised by the screen however.
Just thought I'd give everyone a heads-up and HIGHLY recommend you go and have a look at one first before, say, buying online if you are also sensitive to screen uniformity or if you prefer the more "blue" white balance of the original Samoled screens as opposed to a more "yellow" tint - which this SGSII has.
I'm hoping that maybe it will "warm up" and/or "settle in" but I'm not too sure about that. I've tried turning off "auto brightness" and that definitely makes the screen brighter - as you'd imagine - but doesn't seem to help with my issues described above.
Now - onto something else entirely - GPS:
I've only tested this VERY quickly and indoors but the GPS seems to work better than the oroginal SGS. Will do further testing because I use Google Navigation quite a lot but so far I'm hopeful this is now fully resolved. GPS crappyness was one of the main reasons I upgraded and the main lure of this phone was the Samoled+ screen, so I really don't know what I'm gonna do.
The screen issues are so subjective I'm guessing the shop wouldn't consider it a "fault" and so I'd have a fight on my hands with that one.
I think I'll wait a little to see what happens - I think my eyes would get used to the colour balance being slightly warmer but the slight blurriness of the icons/screen and the slightly lighter bottom half (very slight) will probably stay as they are and are very noticeable to me.
Anyway - hope that was of some interest to someone. Any questions - just ask and I'll do my best to answer.
Nice little roundup, glad you're pleased with it on the whole.
Is there any way you could get an image or two of both handsets side by side, comparing the viewing angles and colour shift for potential buyers?
There have been quite a few tweaks relating to the screen in custom SGS kernels, were you running stock or something like speedmod on the SGS?
You are very wicked boy now i want .

Sorry guys - the screen issues and finding out that £399 is the price on O2 payg (i'm on o2 contract) has made me feel a bit more sick.
I'm attempting to take it back to phones4u tomorrow. I already called and can tell it's going to be trouble. They have to call "head office" apparently. Thank God I can show my existing SGS next to the new SGSII so that they can clearly see the difference. I consider the issues I described a fault of the first batch and being able to see the difference easily should help me but I've not got a good feeling about phones4u. We'll see though. Hopefully they'll surprise me.
Wish me luck! -> Really need all your goodwill

I hope you have 2.3.3 on your SGS to compare it to your SGS2, as 2.3.3 will warm up any screen (google wanted this, not samsung). If you are compareing 2.2 or 2.2.1 with your new SGS2 then that is not a fare comparison of the screen and its color!
The Engadget review posted a few hours ago said there's an app or setting that lets you change the screen's colour temperature. In fact, they say pretty much the opposite to what you've said about the screen.

I have noticed that Samsung has changed the color temperature on the galaxy tab. it is now much warmer with a strong reddish appearance instead of blue which it was before and most others are...
it is very obvious if compared side by side with display models in shop. I wonder why...
.

In Settings/Screen/Mode you have probably selected 'Movie' which is much warmer. There are two other settings which are 'colder'.
have u checked the screen display mode?
Lots of useful options are available in there! and I like that among all Tabs, the SGT 10.1 is the only one that has those settings.
I think its a part of the TouchWiz UX layer, cuz I tried a pure HC 3.1 w/o TW UX and those fonts/screen modes were NOT there!
of course I know these settings and have compared one by one with display model in shop and notice a very strong difference in color temperature.
while originally the galaxy tab was known to have a rather bluish cold appearance it is now unlike much 'warmer'.
Better than the Xoom's display.
Well yes that is true of course. While initially I preferred colder temperature I got used to the warmer tone and think it is better. For pictures and video for sure.

After reading a lot of reviews and discussions about the Galaxy Note it was time to see and feel the Note in real life today. I went to a quiet gsm shop and took my time comparing the Note to the GS2 and the Iphone 4s. I'm an Iphone user for almost 4 years and a happy camper most of the times, until the Iphone 5 didn't show..... First impression of the Note: huge, slim and.....huge! Time to play around with it and check out the whole "pentile-retina-rgb story. Conclusion: Iphone 4s best screen quality, followed bij the Note and the S2. White is kind of blue on the Note and you can see the pentile "frames". Black is wow, colours nice, but the white.....pitty..... Then the scrolling/pinching experience on the Note (better on the S2): a lot of lag, not very fluid speedwise. The browsing experience is a totally different story, you can just read a whole website on the Note without scrolling and pinching most of the time. This is an amazing experience and unmatched by any other phone. But still........ I'm more confused after today.....which one to take.... There is no perfect phone, no complete package, compromises all the time. Waiting for the S3 is no option, Galaxy Nexus no match, streamlining the Note with updates like ICS is no holy grail.....
Now time for a nice diner and maybe you guys can give me some headrest....
iPhone is solid (too much so)
Galaxy S2 is quick and sleek
Note has a beautifully large display (primarily for browsing)
your choice...only a matter of time before updates comes out for the note to make it as responsive as the rest... i'll stick with my note
To fix the color issue you faced:
1. Go to "Settings"
2. "Display"
3. "Screen Mode"
4. Select the best one for you. I love "Dynamic" since the colors are rich and warm. "Standard" and "Movie" are kind of bluish which might explain the problem you have.
You will never see such detail and options on any iPhone.
Let the Note get Cyanogen or ICS.. Will be awesome (until Samsung launch SG3 in four months)

Beyond the contrast options, you must take into account, for the lag, the fact that Android is customizeable, and the best user experience may not be the stock one. Also, shop phones may have several amounts of crap installed and misconfigured in it that a stock phone will not come with.

Agree with you on the last bit.
I was one of the first few people to try the Galaxy Note in my local Samsung Shop and it was smooth as butter. I bought mine and after loading with many apps it is still running as smooth as any iPhone can be, if not better.
Thnx for the replies guys. I tested the different `screen modes`and the saturation of the colours changed indeed, except the white balance. It remained `blueish`. Do you recognize this phenomenon? I really hope the lag will disappear with updates like the 2.3.6 one, because the model in the shop was stil on 2.3.5. Because of the lag I miss the `in control` sensation.

Yes whites are bluyish (colder) on samoled screens, but you only notice it when you put a hotter screen nearby (iphone 4s is hot white). Try spending 10 minutes browsing on the note or S2 without looking at any other white screen nearby and your brain will register white as white...

Maybe you´re completely right about the white. I´m a bit of a hifi guy and listened to many different high end speakers and amplifiers in my life. You get the same problem in that situation because you are comparing too much. It´s about the details that come to light next to each other, but completely disappear when you take them apart. Sound is emotion, and eyesight is not far away. Maybe the solution is to just buy the damn thing and see what happens. Discussing about it is also nice though....hehe

It was the LAST one in stock in the whole of Dubai, I bought it from the main branch in Bur Dubai, opposite Al Ain Centre...
Super AMOLED always has worse whites than regular LCD panels, its also less bright, that's a given. If I had to liken Super AMOLED to any TV technology it would be high end plasma tvs. They also have awesome blacks and color but their white levels are below LCD tvs. However, the trade off is that you don't get ugly gray screens during black scenes and in the case of AMOLED, black levels are infinite as is the contrast ratio (thus giving you more "pop" in your images). So it more than makes up for the lesser brightness vs LCDs like those found in iPhone 4s.

True.
Having only been using Android for 2-3 months now, first on the S2 and currently on the Note, at this point in time I believe I will never go back to iOS.
It is indeed about compromises, and the Note ticks FAR more boxes for my requirements, hence it is a no brainer over an iPhone. Once you start using the beast of a screen you can't go back to an iPhone, even my S2 feels so small now.

Galaxy Note's max brightness is about 429 cd/m^2 vs 654 cd/m^2 for the iPhone 4s. That's a huge difference and thus backs up what I said.

So because one LCD phone you had has a higher brightness than one AMOLED phone, it makes sense to say that it's a given that LCDs are brighter than AMOLEDs... Right... Are you a scientist?

Did you bother clicking on the link? The Super AMOLED brightness is basically middle of the road. I can find a lot more examples of LCD panels that are way brighter but why bother? It's common knowledge, I guess nobody's clued you in yet. And yes I am a scientist.
P.S. Go over to your local AT&T store, pull out your Note and put it next to the newly released HTC Vivid. Then try to tell me with a straight face that the Note is nearly as bright.
Hi, I was just watching the "Iron Man 2 Trailer 2 (OFFICIAL)" on Youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNQowwwwYa0
At around 1:46-1:48, the video quality is very ugly. Can you try it on your device? Anybody knows how to fix this problem? When playing the same video on my desktop monitor, it looks nice. When I played it on my iPodTouch, the quality was not as bad as the Galaxy Note.
If you are talking about the dark/black areas in the video it vary`s from note to note, my last one was really bad, my replacment is much much better, see thread below.
The time 1:46-1:48 in the video is not too bad on my note, I can see where the problems areas are in the video, they would have been really bad on my old note.
It`s a hardware fault, get your note swapped, though one owner went though five notes before he found a good one.

lol...I don't really believe there is a Note out there with out that black problem. They think initially was a software problem...but it's still there with ICS
Somewhere I read that some devices have less obvious black crushing issue. I read that a person got a good one after 5 exchanges.
I also heard that there is an app called Screen Adjuster. Some users were able to reduce the problem to no black crush by making the following settings:
1. red: -3
2. red: -3, contrast: -20 to -30
3. contrast: -50-60
I tried all these but there does not seem to have any improvement.
Is there a better app or parameter set that I should try?
If there is no solution, shall I return it to the store for a refund and get the S3, keep exchanging until I got a better or perfect one? Thanks.
if you are referring to black dots while the screen is totally black (am i making any sense here)

I am not sure if we mean the same thing. If you try the iron man 2 video link in the original post, you will know what I mean.
So, S3 has this problem because it uses an amoled screen?

i think it hasnt, (try to post a question on s3 thread) because it uses different type of amoled, cant say exactly but it is pentile vs non pentile or RGB vs non- RGB-something like that but i think there is differences between note amoled and s3 amoled
Did you watch it with quality at 720p? I've noticed if you watch things on the note in low resolution the black problem is much worse. At higher resolution it becomes far less noticeable.

There is a posting on FB (Samsung Galaxy Note - Screen Issues) that one person has the black crush problem on S3. I asked S3 users in the forum. There have been a few replies. They don't have such problem. Perhaps I should ask them to watch the video in the dark.
well i for one cant see the problem in that film.. looks good.
but yea movies with low res gets pretty messed up but thats an LCD problem also.. non resizable pixles.. now if we could get a mobile with an CRT screen
a 15kg phone would be nice.

There is no such problem on my 3-year-old iPodTouch.
yes, galaxy note screen is crap, but mine was getting better after getting new screen replacement
and I think S3 doesn't have that problem, supercurio mentioned it on his twitter
Not all SGN have screen issue
i play this video , watch it on hd
focused on 1:46-1:48
i have no problem at all
i think the old note only have this problem
anyway the s3 not have this issue
My first Note had this problem - and if you "turned the screen off" in a dark room you could see lots of black dots and lines on the screen.
When i do the same with my new Note - the screen is perfectly clear, no dots, no lines. And i checked the video - no black crush effect. I guess this might be related somehow.
But still, when tested with this brightness image, my Note goes down to 3. 2,1 and 0 are not visible at all.
And another thing - my friend's S3 also have this problem. It's a little bit better, but still present, so i guess it's simply related to oled technology.
So, what suggestion do you have in my case?
I bought it in a retail store. The staff said that if I have any problem, just return it in 10 days. I took it to the Samsung Band Store in HK. I showed it to the assistant manager to get a second opinion. (He claimed that he worked in the tech support department for Nokia before.) This guy said that he has never heard of such problem. This is also the same guy who said that he has never heard of the Premium Suite. He also told me that there is no issue with the ICS and have never heard any complain. Before I bought the Note with GB pre-installed, he was nice but after I bought it. He became inpatient and said that he has nothing to do with that product. He just asked me to go to the service center. Then, I took it to a branch of the chain retail store where I bought it. The sales saw my Note. Then, he looked at the one on display. He said that since both Note displayed the same way, he was not sure if there is a problem with my Note. Then, he asked me to go to the Samsung service center. If the service center authorizes the exchange/refund, he will do so.

I checked on S3 today. The room was not dark. It was hard to tell but it looked like it displayed better within the frames I cited. However, in other parts, the image quality was quite bad (not related to black crush).
Some people said that the black crush is related to oled technology but some said that there is no problem with their Note (after several exchanges) or S3. I am confused...
I have this problem sometimes too, any solution for this because a friend had a problem too but was ok after sending it in
