(noob question) what does sync do? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
this is my first android device. I've noticed in the settings, under "Accounts", you can activate "Sync" for various Apps, for example WhatsApp, Facebook, and all the Google services (Google Drive, Gmail, Photos, ...)
I don't really understand what this does. For example i can activate to "sync" my WhatsApp contacts, and then it does that every couple of minutes, but what does this even do? Or what does it do when i sync Facebook?
Does anyone know that?

Examples:
Contacts keeps your contacts on your phone up to date with your google contacts if you were to check them via a web browser.

Gmail would always pull down the latest emails and give you a notification when you get a new email

Just look up the definition of Synchronization

This.
Sync makes your phone periodically match it's data for certain services- Facebook, contacts, calendar, pictures, etc. - to the database for that service. Its name implies exactly what it is.

Sync takes data from your phone and sends it to your online accounts like facebook and if you change data on facebook it will update the data on your phone to match your online account.

Saving contacts from all resources to Google account.

On my Nexus One, I sync my Google and Facebook contacts. It works this way whenever I'm on this phone. However, I may have a problem with Facebook, my sim, or my phone one day (just making very sure )
How do I save all my Facebook contacts, sim contacts, and phone contacts to my Google account?
I was just wondering the same thing! I have all of these new phone numbers pulled from Facebook, but right now I can only see them in my N1 Contacts; I'd like to be able to edit them on my desktop via the Gmail "Contacts".

Keep facebook contacts from showing

I know there must be a setting for this but for the life of me I don't seem to be able to find it. I had to wipe my phone and flash it again today. Now when I go to make a call, it is not just showing my contacts that I sync with my pc but it is also showing my facebook contacts. Keep in mind this is in the phone app and not in the people app. How can I stop this from happening? I am on the fresh 2.1.2 rom.
In the address book, click menu, then view.
Assuming that you have your facebook contacts syncs checked, go to menu, settings, accounts and sync, and uncheck facebook sync. You should be good to go.
Dave I still see my facebook contacts in the phone app how about you OP?

Try removing the facebook account altogether in manage account section (within the account and sync settings). That worked for me.
In the people app I have only the phone contacts selected. Where I see the facebook contacts is if I am in the phone app and I start scrolling through the list from the phone app or if I create a shortcut that is Direct Dial. In those 2 cases it shows the facebook contacts eventhough in the address book the google and facebook contacts are not checked.

What got rid of my facebook contacts is if you are looking at the main screen, you go to menu, then settings, then accounts and sync. If you have facebook at all in that menu, remove it completely. None of my facebook contacts comes up any more if I'm in the people menu or phone menu at all.
That's all I know.

This worked for me also, now what i cant figure out is how to link the contacts in my people app, to facebook. I dont want hundreds of contacts in my phone when i dont give a rats @ss and dont plan on contacting them....
Syncing the contacts also sucks when you text. it list all the fb contacts in there....

Facebook contacts

How do I get rid of my Facebook contacts from my phonebook? I've searched but I haven't really found anything. I;ve also tried playing with settings to no avail. Please help! It's driving me nuts.
Do you want to hide them or just get rid of them totally? To Hide them go to the people app and click menu then view then deselect facebook. if you want to get rid of them altogether then backup the ones you want, Gmail contacts will back up automatically if you have that enabled, then from home screen go to menu, steeings, applications, manage applications then hit clear storage. presto no more contacts. Then restore the ones you backed up. Hope this helps.
Thanks ifly, I was able to delete all my contacts and re-sync.
Is there a way to sync the contacts on my phone with Facebook so that I can get contact pictures?
tonight different facebook pictures were with the wrong contacts
Im not to sure how to get the face book pictures. I know a round about way, First set up a "youmail account" import the contact you want into youmail. Then sync youmail with facebook, thats under social networks on the main youmail page, search for it and you can find it pretty easy. then youmail will update all your contacts with pictures (if they match facebook contacts of course) then export the youmail contacts to gmail, then sync and presto pictures. Of course this is the long drawn out way .... i dont know about an easier way as i don't use a facebook app on my evo. good luck.
Yea, that sounds like more trouble than it should be. Does anyone know an easier way?
So does anyone know how to do this through the phone? Is there an app or widget that'll do it?
sign into HTC facebook, then go log into your gmail account on the phone, let it sync contacts, then select which contact you want, and once in there is a little link option on the contact info, click it and link that contact to a person on your facebook. TADA done. I have all my contacts (that have facebook) done this way. Takes maybe 5 minutes for 100 contacts.
HTC Facebook the app or through where do I sign-in? As of now, I am not logged in to Facebook through the app or through accounts & sync.
I am logged in to the gmail app for the record.
Still nothing. Anyone else have any ideas?

[Q] Facebook Sync with contacts issue

I have the facebook application syncing with my contact data.
When I pull up my contacts and look under the linked accounts, each user has 5 linked accounts.
How is this possible? Is this a glitch?
The only other contact sync I have is Google.
same here.. when I look, there are five icons "linked" one google, one facebook, and THREE little green icons (WTF are those?)

Yes, that is exactly what I have too. Very annoying.
I have noticed this issue as well. In my accounts and sync settings I somehow have two facebook accounts, which I think was caused by the last upgrade to the facebook app.
Unsyncing and/or deleting one of the facebook accounts solved the problem.
I am also showing lots of account sync icons in my contacts. Thought maybe I just did something wrong. If deleting them and then syncing them worked for you I'm going to try it and see what I come up with.

Happens on mine too. If you set up your Facebook account from the Accounts and Sync settings, then you won't have any problems with multiple linked accounts. When you use the Facebook Android app and widget and login, it'll ask you if you want to sync your contacts and calendars. That's where I saw that all the duplicate linked accounts appear.
The big problem I've seen is that either way, if you go to your contacts and try to access their Facebook page it will only open your profile and not go to their page.
Kind of sucks.

I get that too! Now because I have multiple links to each contact, I have 5 links to facebook profiles under each contact. Each time I click on any of them, it simply takes me to my own page. Great...
I Just double checks a few of mine and it shows 3 right now but I think that's because I have it showing on specific accounts. I have a Google, Facebook, and unknown account listed per person. The unknown one is the one I don't get. I can also see their recent updates, pics, and profile pics again. Idk wtf happened lol.

Yep, I meant to edit my post with how I got rid of them but because I'm a n00b here I get limited to one post every 5 minutes including editing :\
The way I found to get rid of the duplicate contacts is having to go into the Accounts and Sync settings and delete the Facebook Android account. If you're using the Facebook widget that will also log you out of it. You can then log back in using the widget or app and make sure to uncheck the contacts sync so that way it doesn't sync at all (especially since your phone already is doing so if you added your account using the Accounts and Sync setting). Reason I wanted to get rid of them is when you access your contacts through something like adding a new contact from an unknown text message, it pulls up all the synced contacts that are connected with your phone (duplicate entries stored on your phone/sim/facebook account(s)/twitter/etc)

How to add Facebook contacts to phone?

Does anyone know how to merge Facebook phone numbers to the phone contacts itself or Gmail contacts? Most of my contacts are linked through Facebook but I don't want to be logged in 24/7. Is there a way to do this?
Well, once you've linked your Facebook contacts, I don't think you have to stay logged in to Facebook for them to stay there. You just need to keep your account registered on your phone. As to actually transferring the data to the other contact iterations, I don't know of a way to do that with the tools built into the phone, though there might be an app that does, I've never looked.
IT doesnt mean your logged in,
When I logout of my Facebook it removed all the contacts except the ones in my Gmail.
Yes, but I don't think Facebook registers you as being logged in just because you have your login information stored on the Facebook app on your phone. Think of it like... storing your login information on your computer's web browser with cookies. Whenever you navigate to Facebook, it will log you in automatically and send you straight to your pages, but you're still "logged off" as far as the website is concerned when you're not actually using Facebook. It's the same thing with the Facebook app. At least, that's how I understand it.
