CM10 crashed when HD+ is not in use - Nook HD, HD+ General

My HD+ was upgrade to stock ROM 2.0.5. I also installed CM10 on a 32GB Sandisk class 4 micro SD card(it has good 4K writing performance).
Before I upgraded to stock ROM 2.0.5, I notice twice the tablet was crashed(from CM10 1218 build) and stopped in the middle of boot into stock ROM. After I upgrade to stock ROM 2.0.5, I just encountered crash again(from CM10 1225 build).
I am not sure if the crash is caused by CM10 or something even lower than CM10 level. Now, I am switching to stock ROM 2.0.5, and will use it for a few days to see if will crash.

Try a different sd card. I have a bad SanDisk Extreme Pro that works fine for storing movies, but when I load up CM10 on either the HD or HD+, they'll have random crashed, even when not in use. But only when it's not in debug mode. I gave up trying to tie it to bad memory, but I have two other cards that run CM10 flawlessly.

Ditto, but the 12/28 version seems a little better and it reboots into CM instead of 99% Nook...

16g card

Is a 16g card to big for the nook? On most dl's I see 2g, 4g, 8g, etc but no 16g.
No. 16GB is not too big.
The NC maxxes out at 32GB.

cool thanks
I'm using a SanDisk 32g Class 4 for mp4 movies (CM7 1.1 OC) and works fine.

Is our CM7 also running off the card? (noobie question). I recently placed the CM7 on a Sandisk card, 16m, Class2 and all my MP4 videos are choppy or out of sync. I've tried several video players.
A related question: Is the SD image of CM7 the same as the stable version of the EMMC version since the video is reported to be working great in that version.

I' only loading movie files from the 32G uSD. Running CM7 from eMMC. I did run CM7 from a uSD a while ago on a Transend 8G Class 6 which the consensus seems to be the card to use. Class 6 seems to be the "sweet spot". Others have run Class 10s with very mixed results. Lower class ditto.
As far as the version of CM....I don't believe so. The stable signed is 7.0 (7.02) and have not personally seen a uSD version but I could be wrong.
(Edit): Try using VitalPlayer. My sotware of choice.

The "class" of an sdcard measures the sequential read/write speed. The deciding factor for how well an sdcard would run a rom seems to be something else: the small block random read/write speed (which does not seem to be listed on the package); see
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005633&page=2
for an interesting discussion & data (esp OP and post #19). Speaking for myself, I had a great deal of troubles running nookie froyo on two class 6 cards, but I had no problem using a cheap class 2 sandisk. You guess it: the sandisk's small block r/w speeds is almost 10 ten that of the two class 6. Right now I'm running CM7.02 on a class 4 sandisk and it's running great.
YMMV.
Updating the SD Card
I had used the image from Verygreen's link which is 7.0.0-RC2 but re-reading his original post it appears I can just copy the latest build from
"mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=encore"
and copy into the first partition then reboot in recovery.
Can someone comfirm this will still work? I'm having issues with choppy video and terrible battery life - though I realize the battery life is much less than stock. The stable version, 7.0.2 was suppose to address many issues and from reports is running great.
Thanks!

Sounds great - Thanks. I realized that I could just make my own image using Winimage of my current working CM7 SD install and use it to re-flash if things messup. ( slaps head, duh). I am confused about this from Verygreen's post:
OC Kernel installation instructions:
After you have a running CM7 by doing the steps above.
Get CM7 OC kernel from Dalingrin's thread. Unpack the zip file, the result should be a file with the name "kernel" and some other stuff. Rename the kernel file to uImage.
Shutdown your nook and take the uSD card out (make sure the nook is not plugged into USB bus or it'll boot into eMMC then).
Plug the SD Card into the computer, copy uImage file you just created to the first partition (the partition name would be "boot") instead of the existing file with this name (might want to save the original file just in case).
Now you are ready to go again.
You'll need to repeat these steps every time you upgrade to a new nightly build, because they carry their own kernels with them.
Is this still necesssary? The first section instructs to place the newest build .zip image on the 1st partition and recovery boot - the install works like the original install. Also do I need to also re-install Gaaps?
Thanks - I searched Verygreen's long thread but could not find the answer or a link to Dalingrin's thread.
EDIT: Nevermind - I'm learning... so the Kernel is the basic element that is found in the image file. Different beast than placing the .zip image on the sdcard.
10 char doublepost
I am not sure about the size of the card, but what matters more IMHO are the real-world sequential read and write speeds. I purchased a 4GB Class 10 Patriot uSD card and loaded CM7 per Evergreen's instructions. The performance is TERRIBLE, slow and market d/l is extremely slow as well. I attribute this to Patriot misrepresenting the sequential write speeds of the card. I would go with Sandisk Class 4 uSD or Transcend Class 6 uSD (on order) as well as other Brand uSD cards reported by XDA users to run CM7 well on NC.
It works great
Flashed the latest CM7 7.0.2 to my Sandisk 16g, Class 2. Movies play great with several different players. Still want a better class sd card and will use suggestions found in this forum. I swear, is it more fun to see movies play great on my nook or just trying different "hacks". Love this forum.
Thanks to all those who help us newbies.
I bought a 16GB Sandisk (class 4) card today to replace a Transcend 8GB class 6 -- unlike the Transcend, which I had *maybe* 1-2 Fcs total in the 3 days I've had it running, I've been getting errors and FCs not infrequently with the new card
I even tried wiping it and installing fresh downloads of CM7 and gapps to see if that was the problem.
Could it be I just had the bad luck to get a not-so-good Sandisk card?
I'm running the CM7 (stable) install w/ multi-boot menu, only OC'ing to 925mhz via Cyanogenmod settings for both cards. No launcher mod, just a bunch of game apps, moboplayer, quickpic (same set of apps on both cards). Can't figure out why I'm getting random FCs otherwise in the Sandisk card...any ideas?
------ updated : -------
Ran diagnostics on card, everything (including physical surface check) came back clear. r/w scores were OK (a bit low on the r/w 4ks) but nothing terrible.
When I used a different installer all my FC issues dissapeared. The one I had been using (and still have on my Transcend 8GB card) is the 2GB (extendable 4th partition) + multiboot install. It runs flawlessly on the 8GB card but for some reason caused my 16GB install to crash a lot (FCs and error messages).
When I installed verygreen's agnostic SD card version, the issues I was having on 16GB disappeared. Running very smoothly @ 925Mhz CM7 OC. I've thrown a bunch of movies at it and it looks great, no chop. So YMMV.

There is... I put this together and uploaded when there were so many issues with 16GB cards not being formatted.....
Get 16 GB VeryGreen's generic card (preformatted) here
Isn't the point of verygreen's size-agnostic image that you can install it on any size card? I used it on a Sandisk unclassed (so, 2) 16GB from Radioshack, and CM7.0.2 is running great--much smoother than stock 1.2 on the eMMC.

As others have said, it's not the sequential r/w but the small-block, random r/w that counts for running an OS, and class ignores this benchmark entirely. Your Patriot was very likely performing exactly as advertised, but what it's advertising is how well it will perform in a 10+megapixel DSLR camera taking rapid-fire photos or a half-hour video. It gains that performance at the expense of small-block r/w, sometimes gaining 5-10x the sequential r/w by sacrificing 100x or greater the small-block speed.

Yes, but there are several posts regarding issues with the mke2fs failing on 16GB cards.... that is why I made the 16 GB version available....
I tried with 3 different 16 GB cards that would fail... so I presented my solution for 16 GB cards.
I was having problems with the 2GB expandable install on my 16GB card (ok on my 8GB). Just wiped and installed verygreen's agnostic and so far no FCs or oddities that I've noticed; if I start having issues I'll try yours thanks for posting it!
CM7 on 16 GB Kingston...slow as molasses!
I finally got everything copied, imaged, written, etc. It's working...except being able to access the SD card to move all my stuff onto it...but SLOW!
Should I just chalk it up to the card or are there other settings or things to check? I was a bit overwhelmed by the CM7 settings/options...lot of things there...
Thanks

[Q] cm7 wigging out

I loaded cm7 on the sd card and put it in the nook color but when I loaded it all i haver is a little cyangen guy on the screen and nothing else. help
Please let us know what have you put on the microSD.
CM7 is too big to really tell us what is not working for you.
the latest installer image and the latest stable cm7 build
Is it the android with the surfboard? First boot after a fresh install can take several minutes at the boot animation to load.
Also did you install CM7 to SD or to EMMC?
yes it is the surfboard guy but I left him he was on for a good half-hour and i ran it from the SD card
Did you try a hard reboot? Sometimes I've flashed a nightly and it will hang at that screen, but it's never happened more than once. May have been me just jumping the gun.
how do you do a hard reboot and will it erase my regular nooks stored stuff
First thing first, what kind of microSD disk do you have?
A Sandisk 4/8/16/32 GB class 2/4 microSD is highly recommended.
Other brands may give you problems.
Second, which nightly or stable CM7 do you have on the microSD disk?
Please give us the specific number like "nightly #101" or "stable 7.0.3".
And if you have OC kernel, which one?
I have a Wintec 4G and I don't know the class. I have the 7.0.3 stable version
It may be wise to get a Sandisk 4/8 GB class 2/4 disk for this build.
8GB disk gives you more room to store stuff later on.
After you have the Sandisk, check to see if you have all these pieces:
-- generic-sdcard-v1.3.img
-- gapps-gb-20110307-signed
-- update-cm-7.0.3-encore-signed
Follow these steps to prepare your Sandisk:
-- use WinImage/Win32Image/win32diskimager to restore generic-sdcard-v1.3.img onto the Sandisk
-- copy the other two files (gapps-gb-20110307-signed and update-cm-7.0.3-encore-signed) onto the Sandisk
Now the final steps:
-- power off nook color
-- put the microSD in the nook color
-- power on nook color
Let us know if you have any problems.
Good luck.
thanks but I thought you had to run cm7 first to set up wifi before putting google apps on it
Either way will work.
This way you do not have to power off/on the nook color again.
What you need to do is to skip google account setup twice the first time around, and go ahead to set up you wifi first and then back to account setup (in settings) to set up the google account.
After all these, then you may want to reboot your system.
thanks but do you really think it is the sd card. i read the sd card strange results and that person had it going with a different sd card but it was slow. for me I can't get it at all

[Q] What to install...

I just bought a Nook Color for my girl and wanna root and install a costum Rom...since this is my first time doing this to a nook color (i have done this to my G1,Vibrant and Asus transformer) i wonder what is the most stable Rom?
should i go with Cm7 or Honeycomb?
Keep in mind that i'm looking for stable Rom...i don't want to get my girl mad at me..
Thanks in Advance..
Get a microSD card, and install CM7 onto that. You protect the B&N system, so you won't void the warranty. The entire OS and apps sit on the SD card. The Nook will attempt to boot to the SD card first, so you're golden. Any time you want to be back in the B&N mode - just pull the SD card. No need to root or anything.
Go here for the easy-to-read steps on how to make it happen:
http://quinxy.com/2011/04/01/comple...on-the-nook-color/comment-page-3/#comment-944
Even if you were to mess things up you can always restore the stock rom because it boots from the SD card. That's what's so awesome. I would also agree with cm7. There is a sticky in the apps thread that has a good start on what apps you should download first. Some are paid and some are free. Have fun!
I totally recommend Racks11479's Phiremod/Honeycomb dualboot MicroSD image. It automatically boots into Phiremod (CM7 variant) but also gives you the option to boot into Honeycomb if you want to play with that and an option to boot into stock Nook Color software without taking the MicroSD out. Very nice. Also, if you're worried about stability I highly recommend getting a class 4 Sandisk card to run it off of. If you read through some of the forums this seems to be the best card for running ROMS smoothly. You can find the Phiremod/Honeycomb image here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045018
Good luck!
And first thing make sure you have a SanDsik microSD card.
It can be a 4/8/16 gb class 2/4 card.
There are a lot of nookers who start out with the wrong card and have a lot of problems later on, not to mention waste of money for those high class cards.
Again good luck.
Echo everything that's been said in this thread.
You have all the right answers posted to get your feet wet without worry.
If you don't want to use the (more experimental) honeycomb on the sd install, just ignore it when you boot it and it goes to the more stable phiremod version of CM7 by default.
The memory card advice is no joke. If you get a whole mess of force-close issues running the rom recommended above from an sd install, it's either a bad download, bad flash, or (90% likely) you need the right memory card.
My sig has the link to the thread if you want to know why SanDisk.

[Q] better way than booting from sd?

ok guys, noob here ive got my nook running cm7 off the sd card itself but its super laggy, and i cant stand it is there a better way to root it so i dont have to use the sd card and which method has the best success?
If you are not using a sandisk sdcard, you should give a try:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005633
Good luck!
any others???
this pny class 4 8 gig card is the only one i have im down to re root the whole thing if that is what it takes... i just wanna have something that works half way decent
I've had bad luck with the PNY cards.. Sandisk made it run really well.. amazing difference..

But the question now is, do you want to upset your stock OS or not?
Or is there a new way to install CM7 on your eMMC without interupting the stock OS?
My NC is still under warranty so I don't want to take the stock OS off yet, although I am very tempted to trade places, putting my stock OS on the SD card and CM7 (as I use it so much more) on the eMMC.
If you don't want to touch the stock OS yet, the sandisk is optimal for these units.
In fact, if you will dig around in posts about SD cards and CM on AD cards, you will find opinions and actual performance tests showing that CM from an SD card can be as fast as CM from eMMC... if you use the correct card.. which is a Sandisk class 2 or 4 of any size.. 2gb and up.
Don't ask me to point you to the posts.. I can't. I only remember reading these things when I was doing similar research.
For $10-20 you can give it a try and do something else if you are not happy.
.. or if you are sure you don't need easy access to stock, go for an eMMC install..
Neither solution is irreversible..
There's nothing the stock Nook can do that Android can't and there's probably a list somewhere of the things Android can do that the stock NC ROM can't but it probably wouldn't fit in this post. Search for 8+1, you can always fall back to "so clean the video wants to play".

Thats not an issue as you can always restore to stock if there is a problem. That is Part of the greatness of SD boot priority. You can restore no matter how screwed up your internal memory is.

The warranty is not really an issue as I found when I had to have mine replaced. You just restore it so stock. When you create your install image SD card save it in case you have to return your Nook. If that happens, just place the stock ROM .zip on the card and boot from it and wipe everything like you were installing CM7 all over again but instead just flash the stock ROM. It can be found here: http://www.multiupload.com/BW8FIEJ2GH (With thanks to Taosaur.)

I didn't follow all posts from the beginning so I just make assumption that you're booting CM7 off the Sandisk uSD.
No personal stuff should be placed in the boot partition. Place them in the left-over (/media) storage.
Just install it on the internal memory there are many great Tutorials on it.

I can tell you that I have been running CM7 with nightlies off the uSD card since I got it (3/11). Using an 8gb Sandisk is indistinguishable in speed from the stock system, but SUBSTANTIALLY more useful. Since my NC is still under warranty, all I have to do to "restore" it to stock is take out the uSD card. I love it, and it doesn't take you into the "restore to stock" mess that, while it works fine, is still pretty stressful.
Try a good Sandisk uSD; you probably won't need or want to flash your internal memory.

New Nook HD+ will not boot from SD card.

I bought a Nook HD+ for the mothers day sale, booted CM10.1 from the SD card, and it ran fine for about a week. It ended up dying, so I had to exchange for a new one. Brought my new one home today, and it would not boot any of my bootable SD cards. I had 3 that worked on my old HD+, and none of them work on this new one. No clue, but thought I should warn you all. I'm now looking for a buyer of my brond new device as it's useless to me without root.
confirmed
my nook HD+ for the mothers day sale also has this problem. does the bootloader not boot from the sd any more?
I have two devices. My old one boots to SD very reliably. My new one is very temperamental. But it will boot eventually. For me it just takes many, many tries. I finally got it to boot, did a nandroid backup, then flashed the emmc CM10.1 and the emmc CWM. So now I never have to boot to SD again with it. All flashing can be done with emmc CWM.
Edit: If you want to stay with stock and still be able to flash my mods, you can just flash the CWM that gets put on internal memory (emmc) so that you don't have to boot the SD CWM anymore. I made a custom version (6028) for internal memory. You can get it here or here. That just means it cannot be auto-updated to a new stock. After you install this internal memory CWM, you get to it by holding the n and power keys together on boot and releasing after a few seconds. It should boot to CWM. If you want a new update to stock, you would need to flash it manually with CWM. If you do update, you will need to re-flash the emmc CWM again immediately before re-booting since the update replaces CWM with stock recovery.

I know, I have the same issue. Some devices are just finicky. One boots right away and one balks. A warranty exchange maybe? Can't tell them really why though.
I got a brand new HD also and it boots fine. I think the slot hardware on the HD+ is really unreliable. I don't think B&N changed the booting software. Maybe try cleaning the contacts? Using a different card?

Thanks for the advice! After about 30 tries I was finally successful getting mine to boot up with a Samsung 8 GB card. For those having trouble: keep trying! The time that worked I both blew on the contacts and inserted it particularly hard. Felt like I was fiddling with an old NES
Never was successful with a G.Skill 8 GB card.
FWIW I purchased mine yesterday and it was manufactured in November, 2012 according to the Nook internal diagnostics screen on first boot.
Well i have been trying with 4 different cards and no one worked.
Any trick or procedure to make this work?
Will the 1gb image work better than the 4Gb or it will be the same thing?
Thanks

You can try my alternate procedure that requires no burning. Look in my HD/HD+ CWM thread and see the new procedure in item 1a.
Sent from my Nook HD+ running CM10.1 on emmc.

Thanks! When i was reading that i was able to boot with the 1Gb card.
Now i am trying to make the backup and i think i will be ready to go.
To the new guys like me, keep trying and change the card. :good:
As others have mentioned, the boot problem appears to be tied to some hardware difference between individual units. I tried my SD card on a buddy's unit and it worked first try. Exact same SD card took 30+ tries on mine!
Not sure if this is helpful or not. I only have Verbatim 16gb cards, I bought them all at the same time. My HD plus boots every time from the cards they are marked HC. Worth a try if you have one in another device or can get one really cheap. I just got my Nook for Father's day so maybe they fixed the issue on the latest batch or maybe I just got lucky. I am not sure just throwing it out there for others to try.
Hello.
I did not manage to boot a few SD cards - until I marked the partition on the SDcard with the lba flag. I used Gparted ( a linux tool /distro for manipulating any kind of storage disks). I used Ubuntu for this. The process is very easy - boot in Ubuntu (even if you dont have it installed, it can be easily booted from USB(live USB), the process is described all over the web an is fairly easy.). If you boot from live USB, Gparted is pre-installed, find it in the dash top-left button will bring you a search filed.
Once Gparted is open, select the first partition of the SDcard, right click and apply.
This fixed it for me.
Ps What is LBA(form thr gparted site):
LBA is used by some commercial operating system boot loaders. The LBA flag indicates the partition should be accessed using Logical Block Addressing (LBA), instead of Cylinder-Head-Sector (CHS) addressing.

Me too! Mine would sometimes not power on at all, or sometimes power on but boot to stock, depending on what utilities I used to format and partition. After reading your suggestion, I first tried running Gparted in my Ubuntu VM under Parallels on my Mac, but that didn't work at all. Then I reformatted and repartitioned in EaseUS Partition Manager, and then used a Gparted Live USB image to set the LBA flag as you directed, and it worked a treat! Thank you!
I bought Nook HD+ 32GB during the father's day sale
I follow this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35811322&postcount=1, and downloaded NookHDplus-bootable-CWM-6028-for-stock-4GB-rev4-(05.15.13).zip
I then burn the img to a Sandisk 4GB Class2 micro SDHC I have lying around using dd on ubuntu
Just like the recent messages shown, I can't boot up my Nook HD+ using this CWM bootable Micro SDHC card
I even used linux gparted to set the lba flag, no go
After about 10 tries, it finally boots into CWM
So yes, just be persistent
