I used to have a post saved on here on my old PC and it was in relation to the A500 being able to play movies... There was a very basic, simple DVD ripper which looked, as I said, BASIC - forgot the name though... after you did that then you would use HandBrake to encode to .mp4 for playback... ANY ideas? It is not MagicDVD, DVDFab, AnyDVD... Help if you can and thanks in advance.

What you really need is a SW that converts DVD's to a format you can run on the A500. The SW called freemake converts to all commonly used formats. It works for me.

So I have 2 videos files both are .avi files. one is a Xvid the other is not labeled. I want to play them on the vibrant the Xvid worked the other one comes up with a message saying video file not supported. How can I get that to work?

without knowing the codec of the other video I can't help you, .avi doesnt't tell me anything, that's just the container, download mediainfo and paste the info it gives you from the video file

give it a try using rockplayer, it should be able to play anything that the stock player can't.

Rockplayer in the market.
Use handbrake to convert to mpeg4 or h264 and theres a great thread in here on how to do this.

Dude, make your life simple, go to the market and download Rock player. It is open source and it is based on ffmpeg. It can play virtually everything. I am currently playing Mkv files on my Vibrant. ;-P

.3gp was the extension avatar used; it is a typical format for cell phones.I found a converter through google and it worked great, and it compresses the movies to very small file sizes as well...which is the main benefit of that file type.

Dvix, Xvid and Mp4 as well as M4v all play fine.
Dvdfab does Xvid/Dvix fine and Handbrake creates pretty good Mp4/M4v
The only reason I even bother with Mp4 and M4v is my wifes iTouch plays those otherwise I would just use all my Xvid/Dvix files on my phone.
if you have vuze, let it automatically convert it for you, you don't have to mess with any settings, video looks great on my vibrant

I use ffmpeg in a script initially designed for my ipod touch.
The parameters I'm using are:

I obviously haven't spent time optimizing this yet for my vibrant, but it works good enough for "The Daily Show".

I Second Handbrake
I use Handbrake and it works great. I have standardized all of my videos, computer or mobile, to MP4. I belive 3GP is very similar to MP4, if not basically the same. Handbrake creates great videos for the phone using the "iPhone" profile.

just make sure your pc recognizes the vibrant thru usb, then startup vuze, make sure its the latest version of vuze. under devices in the left portion of the vuze ui you should see your vibrant listed. then just click that n drag n drop

just use handbrake, its the best program if you don't really know what you're doing. I use MeGui myself but that's kind of advanced for most people

I have been reading a lot over the best file type for this phone, which is said to be .mp4 but when I convert my movies to .mp4 in play back it's cut off, meaning I doesn't use the fullscreen even after stretching it, but when I use .avi it fits in perfectly the problem with .avi ia that out makes the file sizes to big and some movies I can not transfer. I have tried a lot of different things just wondering if anybody has solved the problem.

You have to properly encode the video here is detail explanation with HD profile of what your mpeg4 video output should look like in *.mp4 format. You don't need to convert it with any other A/V codec as mpeg4 containers is sufficient if done correctly. I always encode my videos for mobile device before I transfer it thats another reason it looks good.

Resolution: 800x480
Bitrate: 128kbps
Crop: 5:3 (1.667)

Thanks a lot man! I gave credit where its due, i'm converting now.
Enjoy buddy lol this saved my life as you watch video in HD with no audio or video out of sync. The quality of the video is only subjected to the orginal input of the file. Most folks IRL always ask me how come they can't make videos like that lol thats another reason I win the brag war saying my phone is smarter than your phone.

I use a program called Freemake (www.freemake.com). It is very easy. This program has a bunch of options of what format to rip it to.
Another good free program is called handbrake. Search the forums; some people here figured out the best settings for the tab.

Yes, using one of the above mentioned or other app to rip to PC and then copy over to tab via USB mass storage mode.

No offense intended here, but this is the type of question that has been asked and answered thousands if not hundreds of thousands of times on the internet over the years. This is really one of those times that you should google before you ask a question, or at least download the suggested programs and just try to figure it out. If you're smart enough to find XDA, you're smart enough to find this answer on your own.

It will once you have found the file libdvdcss.dll or livdvdcss-2.dll on the internet and copy it into the handbrake directory. The filename in the directory has to be libdvdcss.dll. So you might have to rename your finding.

I second the DVDFab Decrypter! The paid version will rip to any format and the HD version will rip Bluray too! And its a multithreaded application so the more CPU cores you have, the better the better the performance(in general of course)

DVD43 works for this. Though... I have to remember disable it when connecting my phone to the USB or it causes a mem-dump/BSD on my laptop.

My setup is exactly like this. Works fine for me, given that I input the correct profile. Usually takes 3-4 hours to complete. I use BS player and it works very well

I've tried VLC media player to rip some of my old movies I have, but I can't seem to find the ideal settings. I rip on the preset "Video for android sd high" but the movie still wont transfer over without my phone wanting to convert it again when I transfer. Then after it does, my 2 hour movie takes up 1.4 gb, and that seems to high. Any recommendations on a more efficient setting or maybe if I should transfer directly to the SD card and reinsert it into the phone? Thanks
Try a program called "Handbrake". I've used it rip my DVD collection and I set it to encode on a "universal" setting, ends up being in .m4v format and my phone plays it fine. I'd say that's a normal size (at least what I've experienced) for a 2 hour movie.

Why would movies downloaded onto my SD card for Flixster only be 700mb then? Are they somehow compressed?
I honestly couldn't tell you. I only have experience with that one program and don't know what flixster is.

I ended up getting dvd decrypter, and handbrake. That combo works even though I didn't want to get two programs but it's fine I guess as long as it does the job. Thanks
The whole process is pretty quick takes about 30 to 40 minutes for a whole movie. I'm happy with it

Not sure if this is even an issue here... your 1.4GB file for a 2 hour movie at 1080p sounds exactly right... The 700MB file you mentioned sounds right for the same movie in 720p... are you checking these files after loading them on your phone to see what resolution they are? I've never seen one of my movies at 1080p turn out smaller than 1.+GB... even recording with the camera for that long turns out that big at 1080p...

Good point but I was having issues even ripping with vlc. Handbrake works just fine and I don't think I need any better then 720 for now. Is handbrake capable of 1080?

Is there an option to download movies to your SD card with flixster? I can only stream movies, but can't download them to my card. Is it a setting that I need to enable?

Don't do the scan folder option. Choose the add then file then choose the file directly.

Get the best BEST dvd / blu ray backup software I have ever used. It's called MAKEmkv. It's free while in beta. You can find the software key on their website that is good through jan.
Use this. You will thank me later.
Makes 100% lossless backups in mkv format. Then you can use handbrake to condense.

Yeah DVDS are 720 at best. Blue rays are 1080. You can upscale the dvds to 1080 but it's not really worth it. You would be better with just the 720 verison.

If you convert DVD of the VOB format to any other formats, the quality will be lossy. But if you just rip DVD to VOB format which if of the same format as DVD, the original video format will be kept maximally as there is no re-encoding process. Also some software allow you to convert DVD to HD format. I think the output quality will be good.

I've used DVD Catalyst forever (so its probably old technology). It lets you choose your device and optimizes it from there...
