I recently discovered that ATT gophone (prepay or pay as you go) for android phones is only 50/month and everything is unlimited...voice/text/data. There is no way you can go over any limits, even if you tried to.
Can anyone verify this is actually the case and if they use this?
Apparently you have to purchase an additional data plan if you are using IOS or WP7, but not Android. I'd love to know if anyone knows why this is the case.
I'm currently on tmobile im paying over 100/month, but the 3g limitations on the GNote is maing me switch to att, thankfully. This should cover the cost of the note in less than one year.
Thanks,
Jason

I think its his/her enterprise data plan.
My Note's on the way - should be here on tuesday. Meanwhile, my 2 yr verizon contract ends tomorrow, so i signed up with at&t. I picked the post-paid month-to-month plan that includes 450min. + unlimited data (for non-smartphones) which would bring my monthly bill to $70. I was thinking of doing the $50 gophone thing but then i read that coverage not as extensive, speed throttling on prepaid, etc. so i'd rather just spend the little extra for the benefits of postpaid.

Sorry to break it to you, but I don't think that it works like that. The $50.00 unlimited plan only provides unlimited data for non-smartphones. You can get that plan with an Android phone, but if you do, you will have no Internet access. If you don't talk much and don't use too much data, you could go with the $25.00/250min plan plus the $25.00/500MB data plan. (Source: I just chatted with a support rep.)
Personally, I'm hoping that they either release a US-compatible CDMA version in the near future, or that the people in this thread succeed in getting the existing Note to run on T-Mobile. If either happens soon, I will probably import one immediately.
Grandfathered $30/mo unlimited data plan for me. Good thing too, because I usually go through 10+GB of data per month!! Netflix, YouTube, Pandora and Google Music. Make sense now?
So your bill at the end of the month is $30 plus tax? Is there a voice anf text plan or is this all inclusive? This is through att and if so is pre or post pay?

He has the grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan. It's $30/month on your bill. It stopped being obtainable about 1 year ago.
Yes I am crystal clear on the $30/ month part for unlimited data. I'm ado quite clear on the definition of grandfathered in this context. This however does not answer my question regarding
1) which service provider(I'm assuming ATT, but I'm not sure)?
2) does this also include voice and text or does he have those plans in addition to his grandfathered 30/month data plan?
Thanks,
Jason

This is patently false. I've been on the non-smartphone data with AT&T for over 3 years using a variety of imported, unlocked smartphones (android and otherwise).
Well that's good news for me then. Do you have full internet capabilities? Also could you tell me which plan, provider, pre or post pay?
Thanks!

He's probably on VZW or AT&T and the Grandfathered Data Plan is just for data.

I am post-paid on AT&T, 450min/mo @ $39.99 + $10 unlimited data for non smartphones (MEdiaNet) + $20 Unlimited texting / mobile to mobile calling. If you search about there are a ton of people on AT&T doing this. The caveat is that your IMEI number cannot be in AT&T's system as a smartphone. That means you need to use an international market unlocked phone. There are people doing this with Galaxy SII and you don't need root or anything else.
Also, if you are bringing your own hardware (GNote) you don't need to sign a contract either (even post-paid) so you can quit whenever you want. Just get a SIM and activate it.
You can always go to T-Mobile and do the $50 prepaid contract that does unlimited talk, text, and web. But you have to provide your own cell phone or purchase one from them or elsewhere. This is a really good deal, it also gives 4g if you have a 4g phone.

Sadly, T-Mo uses AWS frequencies for HSPDA that aren't available on the Note.
Ok so why wouldn't you do the 50/month prepay (att) which has unlimited voice/text/data and use the same dumbphone imei?
It seems you currently pay 69/month with some limitations.

It would be helpful to know where you are located, as Providers are going to vary depending on location..
In the US, most Wireless Providers have done away with "Data Only" plans.
If you are in US, You can get a Data Only plan from AT&T but that will not be cheap, at $50 for 5GB.
But if you walk in the store asking for a Data Only plan they will probably say you're out of luck.
You will have to ask/tell them you need a New SIM+Plan for a Mobile Hotspot Device (MiFi Thing)
That is the only way to get a Data Only plan through AT&T.
T-mobile, depending on who you speak with instore, and how dumb they are. Will sell you a Tablet Data Plan.
But you will probably have to lie and say you have one of their tablets (Galaxy)
And I believe the Nexus 7 is going to be release buy T-mobile anyways, though it will more than likely not be unlocked. (And I personally do not buy locked devices)
There is Straight Talk, which is $45 unlimited everything (Although you won't need Voice or Text, but will have unlimited Data for cheap)
You probably going to have to go with a "PrePaid" service that runs on GSM networks.
And don't rule out Voice/Text just yet, It's still unknown whether the Nexus 7 modem will support Voice/Text or not. It could, and they ability just be locked/excluded from the framework.
I myself will be going with StraightTalk as its the cheapest for unlimited Data. A SIM w/ Voice+Text service will still work, even though Data is all that will be used.
I was in the UK last week and got a data only sim card thru 3 UK for my galaxy nexus so I could get around. It was only 30 quid for 3 gb of data. And I got the card out of a vending machine at the airport, so maybe you can get something similar in the states.
I've been looking at a few 3G data plans and it seems like most of us would burn through them like nothing. Would upgrading your cellular data plan and activating (if not already have) tethering be another option? I recently got a 2gb increase + tether for an extra $10/month. I don't think the extra 6gb package was but another $10 more.
In Germany you can get at E-Plus 100 MB high-speed traffic for 5 Euro. 1 GB for 10 €....

Tethering would depend on your Wireless Provider... Most Providers block Tether Apps (unless you root) But if they have a Tether ("Data Share") option, then its possible to tether the Nexus 7 to your cell phone, without your Provider penalizing you. But then why buy the 3G Model, instead of paying $50 less for the WiFi only version?

For me, I think i'll give the ATT plan a try since they have far more reliable coverage in rural TX.

I would recommend freedom pop if people have service by their home or commute to work. they offer a free 500 mb a month plan, and all you have to pay for is a hotpot, which is also fully refundable when you no longer want the service. If you want more data they offer some decent pricing plans, and its monthly fees no commitments.

That's heavily debatable. There are numerous horror stories about how it's basically impossible to get your "deposit" back from this company. In fact, I don't think anyone has ever been successful in that endeavor.

It's not free, the tether feature has been built into Android for awhile. And after awhile T-Mobile will block your tethering, so change your PC's UserAgent to an Android device from T-Mobile.

Yes, actually, it does. The T-Mobile unlimited data plans do NOT include tethering. No one is receiving "free" tethering because they have a nexus. T-Mobile will eventually spot it and block them from tethering.
if you have a nexus with the tethering on it your not buying separate tether cause your using your phones same id and whatever your data plan is 2gig, 4gig, 8 gig, or unlimited, your using your allowed data to share to your own gooods, now if you sign up for carrier tethering you use whatever allotment or data you signed up for to share however you may want because your paying separately for the ability to share,,
I thought that after that lawsuit with Verizon, the FCC said that blocking tethering apps was illegal:
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Verizon-FCC-Settlement-Tethering-Blocked-Applications,16583.html
Unfortunately that only applies to Verizon.

Because "unlimited data" is for use on the actual phone. Phone as a modem or pam, tethering and or streaming aren't part of the description and violation of the TOS... You risk throttling, additional charges or termination of services. YMMV

Note: Right after that posting 01/07/13.
I was throttled the next day after trying it on straight talk. Needed to access the net via my wife's iphone to download the apn app to get her data to work again. Less than 842k file.
But I did leave proxy settings in, as I was troubleshooting their suddenly slow resolve.
Previously on my sgs3 I used wifi tether on and off as needed. Tethering my n7 and other devices for minimal use. Without proxy settings in the last 6 months.
It's in their TOS, that your are ultimately responsible for device compatibilities and even if your phone has a certain feature, it doesn't mean you can use it.
So YMMV.

Hi,
I saw that Google is offering an unlocked Nexus 4 for $199, so I went and ordered one.
I don't use cell phone minutes too much in a month as I often have access to Wifi in my area. I was wondering what pay as you go sim card options are compatible with this device (in the USA).
For example, I saw an ATT GoPhone plan that is $2 per day of use which I think may work for me, but I don't know if it is compatible with the Nexus 4 or if there are other similar or better options.
Thank you
Is that $2 every day or just the days you use it? That would still be $60/month.
As long as you can get a micro SIM card, any plan should work.
You could do tmobiles 30$ plan. 100 minutes, text unlimited and 5gb of 4g data then slowed down after that. Not a pay as you go but seems way cheaper and better than what you had in mind.

I just bought 2 N4's from GPlay as well and have been looking for the best option. I know that for my area the only two options are T-Mo and Straight Talk. Both have inexpensive monthly plans. It basically comes down to which carrier provides better service on your area. I chose T-Mo. If after I activate my phones, I'm not pleased, I'll try out the other monthly carrier next month.

you do realize that straight talk probably will use T-Mobile towers and more than likely will give you worse reception. Now if you have AT&T in your area then Straight Talk may use them. T-Mo can be 40-60 a month and Straight Talk is about 45 a month

I'm using Simple Mobile. It's part of the Tracfone family. Unlimited everything (even 4G - HSPA+ or LTE with patch). There are two options for unlimited everything $40 and $50. The $40 option supposedly throttles you after 500mb (haven't seen it yet and always over 500 x2 or 3), $50 no throttle.
All the Sim seller did was cut down a Sim for me.

Thank you for your replies, I will be going through them for more information
As for the $2/day then you only pay $2 on the days that you use it.
Also, I am not interested at all in using a plan that includes data, my wifi connections are good enough for that. I am more interested in making phone calls from time to time, especially in cases of emergency or when away from wifi. Maybe on average I use less than 100 minutes a month.
Then you might as well do pay as you go, and save even more by using Vonage to make free calls over Wi-Fi. I still recommend the T-Mobile $30 100min/5GB plan though.
Simple mobile also has a talk and text plan. As well, for others, they just up'ed the amount of 4g data on all their plans. So my $40 plan is now 1gb of 4g before they supposedly throttle me

If you don't plan to use very many minutes and you don't need to use any data then I'd recommend Lycamobile. It is a T-Mobile MVNO, so as long as you have good T-Mobile service in your area you'll be good. http://www.lycamobile.us/en/national-plans
Ok, some quick testing reveals the following:
- Putting an activated T-Mobile SIM (from my N4) in the phone generates a "Login Required" message. Logging in with the account credentials for the N4 displays the account management page (without CSS for some bizarre reason) and does not provide any assistance.
- Activating the SIM provided with the N7 and placing it in the N4 generates the same "Login Required" dialog.
- Putting an activated AT&T SIM in the N7 allows full access to the network, including LTE.
I am really hoping I can switch the T-Mobile SIM between the N4 (which is my backup phone) and the N7. I don't want to pay another $30/month for data, or carry three LTE capable devices.

When I had my Nexus 7 2012 GSM (tilapia) I was never able to get it to connect via the T-Mo $30 / 5gb plan and always was given the reason that the $30 plan is for voice enabled devices only. TMo appears to restrict based on IMEI. I had to switch to their mobile data package account instead. It is $25 for 1.5GB. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I hope someone proves me wrong as I'd love to get my new N7 2013 that arrived today onto the 5GB package as well!

I doubt its going to work as Google has provided the IMEI's to T-Mobile as they will supposedly be selling the device in October. The best bet now is the 4.5 gb allotment for $40 minus the $10 rebate so it comes out to be the same $30 as before minus 500mb.
If an MVNO is offering a plan with T-Mobile LTE, you may find that the SIM is swappable just fine.

If an MVNO is offering a plan with T-Mobile LTE, you may find that the SIM is swappable just fine.

That may be true but the walmart $30 plan with 5gb is not going to work. The only MVNO i know that has access to T-Mobiles network was Solavei.. Do you know of any others..?

I do remember for a fact that with both Solavei and Straight Talk T-Mobile, reports were successful on the 2012 Nexus 7 3G. You can get a phone/data plan on these MVNOs and swap the SIM into a tablet without any trouble. However I believe that neither MVNO supports LTE on T-Mobile at this time. Straight Talk AT&T just started offering LTE but they have a data limit around 1.5 GB/month, whereas ST T-Mobile customers seem to report no caps at all.
Well, as the band use to say to Harry, that sucks.
I am not a big fan of capped data plans. My AT&T primary line is grandfathered unlimited data, and my T-Mobile secondary line is unlimited data (but throttled after 5Gb). It has come in handy when I've had to reset my phone while on the road, downloading all my apps and data over the wireless broadband network.
If I could find an app that would allow me to text from the N7, I would switch my AT&T SIM to the N7 and use the T-Mobile SIM in my primary phone. Calls not answered on my AT&T line get routed to Google Voice, which will ring the T-Mobile line before going to voicemail. I tried SMSDroid, I can send but received messages only show up as alerts.I may try GoSMS later today.
Or, I'll just tether on the phone... although that negates the advantage of having the LTE Nexus 7.
Thanks everyone!

I doubt its going to work as Google has provided the IMEI's to T-Mobile as they will supposedly be selling the device in October. The best bet now is the 4.5 gb allotment for $40 minus the $10 rebate so it comes out to be the same $30 as before minus 500mb.

What is this $10 rebate that you speak of?

I have the unlimited plan $70 for "unlimited" everything it also comes with 500mb of tethering. T-mobile just bumped up the bundled tethering up to 2.5gb for unlimited users. But the $10 rebate is for postpaid users so prepaid won't work.. But it basically chops off $10 off a mobile internet plan that's added on to your main account. So the 4.5gb mobile internet plan which is $40 I believe drops to $30 with this rebate. But I look @ it like this you lose 500mb but that would have been covered under the tethering allotment that was just raised to 2.5gb so it turns out being more if that makes sense. If not let me know and I can try to explain it again..

Thanks for the information. My T-Mobile account is prepaid, so I'm not sure the same $10 discount applies. But it's worth a shot!
Thanks!

And inorder to do this I needs a straight talk micro Sim card for T-Mobile and then just add some data go the plan?would it even be worth doing it this way because there's no LTE.

Well there is no guarantee. The Straight Talk TOS has a vague fair use policy. In practice users have found that AT&T gets throttled above a certain cap, and then an absolute cap. They have almost never found ST T-Mobile to be capped. Anything could change. If there is no LTE the tablet will drop to T-Mobile HSPA+ which is still quite fast.
EDIT: Oh! Another obvious one. You could try a BYOD SIM from MetroPCS (running of course on T-Mobile). That does support LTE and maybe it will allow you to use it in both phone and tablet. SECOND EDIT: OK probably not. Tablets are against the MetroPCS TOS, and every device you use your SIM with has to be added to your account or the SIM won't work in it.
