Listed Nook HD+ RAM - Nook HD, HD+ General

Good evening,
I'm currently running CM10 on my HD+, and oddly enough, the settings show 768mb of system memory, rather than the 1024 or whatever would be expected of the 1gb of RAM.
Is this normal? If so, why would it show less than expected?
Thanks!
K

Yes, it is normal.

The rest is set aside for framebufer, GPU, DSP etc.

Ram question

just a quick question. after reading about the specs the iconia a500 should have 1gb of ram. in application settings it looks like it adds up to 512mb? is this correct?
This is not correct. Go to Settings> About Tablet>Device Information and scroll down to RAM size.
okay thanks. I'm actually at staples now and. Checked the xoom and the iconia displays and they have the same issue
I believe the 1 GB advertisement (on Xoom and actually all other Honeycomb models), is 512 MB of onboard ram, and 512 MB for the video card.
Thus adding to 1 GB.
I believe this is a "standard" (yeah, frustrating, but true). All Honeycomb tablets advertising 1 GB of ram actually mean 512 MB onboard, and 512 MB on video.
thank you so much for clearing that up!
I believe it is 1gb of system ram (possibly shared on demand with the video hardware)... Using Advanced Task Killer when I clear the running tasks I see 445MB free. There is no way the system is running on just 55MB. I'm guessing Honeycomb just uses a lot of ram in background system processes.
The running applications on mine are using 149MB with 455MB free right now but I don't think that number accounts for all of the background services. Anyway it's not a dedicated 512/512 ram split.

[Q] Ram info on your tab?

I want to know that the total ram showed in settings=>applications=>manage applications=>running applications. My retail version showing 420mb free plus 173mb used ram total 593mb ram on the system instead of 1gb. Can someone plz check in their tabs either retail or io version plz. Thanks
I would guess a significant portion of your "missing" RAM is set aside for the GPU. The ended up being the case for the Galaxy S phones - 512mb RAM, but only 330 available for the OS and apps.
Still, 600mb is a pretty respectable amount for these devices.
My Xoom shows 120MB used and 379MB free. So the total amount shown seems normal. I would like to know why there is so little free memory on GT10.1 if it's a stock Honeycomb?
It's currently 169 / 412 MB on my GT, so I guess about 400 MB is set aside for Graphic processing.
Reboot your GT 10.1 and then report here the RAM statistic ... *please*.
After boot my 10.1 I/O shows 143MB used and 476MB free.

true, considering the ipad manages to run smoothly with just 500mb
after reboot tab showing 169 used and 449 free. Running stock honeycomb 3.1 retail version tab.
I've got 148 used and 412 free
I second all of the above. Mine is usually around 600 MB or less in total. So I guess that's normal? It wouldn't have anything to do with the tab showing hiccups and lags after using it a little bit? Everything was very fast when I used it for the first day and then it started slowing down, especially when I run live wallpapers. Did any of you experience that? It breaks my heart to admit that iPad2 (even iPad) runs so much more smoothly than my Galaxy.

Droid 2 RAM

I noticed in the "about phone" that my Droid 2 only lists 475MB of total RAM. The Droid 2 is supposed to have 512MB. Anybody know why that is? Are all Droid 2s like this? Where did the rest of 512MB go?
Droid 2 - Rooted
RevNumbers' CM7 GB
It does have 512mb of RAM. Every device that has RAM does this, even your computer. I believe it's used for the operating system (Android).
I figured maybe the OS had it set aside for something thereby reducing the amount of RAM that can be used. But I just looked at the system on my Nook Color running MIUI and it shows 512MB. CM7 on my Droid 2 and MIUI on my Nook Color are both GB based ROMs so I would think they would treat RAM the same.
Available RAM or storage capacity is always a bit less than total.

[Q] Lenovo TPT HDD and RAM memory lower than in spec

Hi,
I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad tabled with memory specifications of 1GB RAM and 16GB HDD. All nice, until I go in Settings and check at settings/applications/storage use/running and all which show a disappointing values of total memory ~550MB RAM (almost half...) and ~12GB (almost 25% less...).
For HDD, I can not accept that the rest of 4GB are hidden because are used by Android 3.1 or used by file system format. Even so, Lenovo should be honest and declare total memory against available memory even is "eaten" by various reasons.
For RAM, I can not find any explanation why I see only half.
Q1-Can somebody explain me if tablet is faulty or has a kind of manufacturing issue ?
Q2-Can somebody to check if his tablet has the same memory discrepancies versus manufacturer specifications ?
Thanks!
All tablet's have this "cheaty" way of listing specs. But if you buy a laptop and it says 200gb. You can be pretty sure that windows 7 or what ever is installed is taking up space. The same applies to RAM. While the system may come with 4gb ram, the system has "eaten" som of it.
So, I don't really see the complaint here?

The specs will never match the actual available memory since there is always space allocated to system whether it be ram or hdd

It's likely that the other half is being reserved as video memory.
Hi,
Thanks for reply. I've done a check on other tablets and they show the same lower memory than spec, except Asus 501 I think with ICS 4.
However, I think it should be specified total phisical memory and available memory.

Total available ram will be different and much less than the specs on any Android or mobile device. The system uses memory to load OS and for graphics.
Also the memory space will be less formatted and with all the system apps.
Just like a formatted hard drive or ssd is less than spec.
I do not know why people still complain about these things it is pretty ignorant. Have you ever owned a computer, tablet or cell phone before?

Nook HD+ shows just 768MB of Ram

Is it usual that the Nook shows just 768MB of Ram running the Ovation Android?
I take a look around the internet and everywhere it is listed with 1GB of Ram or am i wrong?
Normal
The HD+ does have 1G of RAM, but a portion of it is set aside for internal system uses . . . 768G is what we all see when we look in Settings under Memory.

Okay, thats something i can live with
Thank u very much for your answer!
I think the low ram with a 1920X1280 display and overtaxed gpu is root cause to our performance issues and firmware tweaks are still dealing with these contraints.

Ram really has nothing to do with it, every 1GB android device has less than 1GB available. Same thing for every other smartphone, tablet and PC, none has all the installed ram available.

With the 1920×1280 display, the 768 available is too low. The gpu is not the only thing that needs to manage that display. The more apps that do not downscale and force the full res, the more the issue. TF700 has similar issues, but the chipset is OCd to help mitigate.
