Hello everyone!
I've been looking on the web for some time now about the new HTC Titans CPU,
clocked at 1.5GHz, named as Scorpion MSM8255 (same as ours (DHDs CPU)).
What do you guys think about it? Since our MSM8255 can "officialy" only hit 1GHz,
but now HTCs new MSM8255 can get it to 1.5GHz?!
I've searched the wiki also and i cannot find any differences.
Oh wait, is it that T at the end maybe? Just found it now.

It's the same chipset. HTC did the same on the Flyer. They just OCed the cpu to 1.5 GHz since the cpu can handle it without problems.

How easy? Very. 1.3GHz is achievable on the DHD with stock volts (1.1V). Wise? Yeah, anything up to around 1.2V is sensible, and safe is far beyond that.
To be honest, nobody will need to go past 1.3GHz, virtually all ROMs run smoothly at that clock.

Oh sounds good. Pretty new to this only just rooted and flashed custom ROM the other day. Wasn't sure if I should OC or not tho. Guessing it's going to reduce an already poor battery life haha

I've had mine at 2GHz. I clocked it down to 1,3GHz after 10 minutes since it got REALLY hot. But it managed to run just fine at that speed.

Well, all of the kernels undervolt as well. Almost all of them run the processor at 1.2GHz at stock voltage. So overclocking shouldn't shorten battery life. Also, remember that many of the ROMs have andrev or virtuous OC daemons installed, so they will be underclocked to minimum speed most of the time. So either way, battery life and performance will be improved.
As for overclocking to 2GHz, while it is possible, I'd very strongly suggest you don't do so.
But it does prove that firstly, the MSM8255 is very overclockable, unlike the larger processed chip in the Desire (which I think will really go as far as 1.2GHz only, correct me if I'm wrong...). The Flyer's processor is exactly the same, just selected (a process called binning) because it is "capable" of running at that speed at the required, and desired voltages with the required stability that the manufacturer (Qualcomm) wants.

Thanks for the reply. I'm currently using rcmix runnymede ROM and its not oc'd. Would a OC of 1.3 be wise on stock voltages?

1.3 might be pushing it. Mine needs 1.125V to be stable. I'd suggest that you probably do the same just in case, or even better 1.150.
The safest thing to do is take a look at the NCTeam kernel voltages, and use those (use IncrediControl from the Market to change voltages). They should work for virtually everybody. 1.3GHz is the speed I needed on Sense ROMs to be very smooth, you might find it is less though.
The desire hd doesnt actually overheat much @ 1.3ghz (I use that + Performance governor when playing some games), so the CPU can probably be overclocked quite alot without any problems
Other phones overheat quite a bit @ stock speeds...
Mine is set to 1,6GHz and it can handle 3d gaming for hours with the case only getting a bit warm. I wrote in a different thread that WP7 is getting an update and it will be able to run on DHD hardware. Maybe some devs will be interested in porting it to DHD then. It would be nice to dual boot Android and WP7. I can almost see all iPhone users faces.

Just to make sure I was clear, I meant that 1.3GHz could be pushing it on stock voltage, not that it could be pushing the limits of the chipset for speed. I think everyone got that, and knows that, but was just making sure.
As for heat, my phone didn't even heat up at 1.3GHz. You can push very far with no problems.

Don't forget that we need a wp7 bootloader. The android one can't handle wp7. Furthermore we probably have to repartition our internal memory (or sdcard if you want to run it from there) since wp7 uses other partitions than android (not sure about that, but i guess we have to.)

Today i noticed an owner of SGS2 mentioning an app called "2nd core" that works with the SGS2s that have a Tegra 2 processor.
Here's the description of what the app does:

*Set on boot
Change mode what you selected automatically on boot time.
Menu > Settings
[ Modes ]
*Dynamic Hotplug Mode
Default. Recently, mobile multicore CPUs turn off extra core(s) to save battery life when system is not busy and only use 1 core.
They turn on extra core(s) when system is busy. so system use all cores again.
*Single Core Mode
Use 1 core always. A extra core is shut down. It makes battery life longer but performance is decreased.
*Dual Core Mode
Use 2 cores always. Performance is increased but battery life is shorter than others.
*Available kernels
Lulz Kernel Build 15 and over.

Why buy a dual core phone if you wanna tweak it to using only one? That's plain stupid.
Not to mention how the Atrix got a bigger improved battery than that of the sgs2, 300mah to be exact. This phone is built for bith performace and efficiency thecway it is and cm7 improves that even more. No need for such an app IMO.

I always thought dual core phones were more battery efficient vs single core phones. When handling tasks, two "brains" are better than one "brain". The workload is divided in half thus meaning less power used, no?

Sounds great and dude don't flame on him that's a great idea why have the the phone working so much when you're not using it.Most apps aren't even optimized for the two cores except for a very small amount and some games.I would like to be able to have one core running until I decide to watch some HD video or play some graphic intensive games and then disable the app for that period of time.This would extend battery life and you can still get performance when you need it why have it running full blast all day if you're at work and can't be playing with your phone???? makes no sense...just saying,especially with people who Overclock and stuff like that more battery efficiency is always a +

1. 320 extra battery life= no big deal!
2. SGS2 have SLCD+ (more energy efficient) compared to Atrix's Pentile Matrix, which consumes way more battery.
3. Plain stupid? Developers who have had an ingenious way to massively improve battery life by suppressing one core WHEN THE CORE IS NOT IN USE/ WHEN NOT NEEDED are plain stupid? God knows how you got 111 thanks!
4. With CM7 and without MotoBlur, the battery life has improved but not by much and battery life is 8-16 hours on CM7 depending on how much i use it. If this is what you call energy efficient, may God save the queen!
5. If you have nothing to contribute in terms of an intellectual debate, don't bother posting.

So either I agree with you in this or I simply shouldn't post? Thank God you're not a mod or anything for that matter.
Second off, again I'll say it. Disabling a core in a two core phone is in fact a stupid idea. I recognize how much work such an app would take but its plain stupid. Why? Because as it is, genius, the phone only uses the two cores on high frequencies e.g:800, 1000...etc. And those CANT be reached unless the phone is being played with, other than that you've got one hell of a problem that no app, rom or kernel would fix I'm afraid.
As for the thanks no, I've got them for helping out and lending a hand in this great community. Which is something I'm sure you'll never do/understand.
And as far as cm7 goes, it gives me and many others a full day 24-28 hours on a single charge. So I'd look more into what eating my battery than into disabling my phone if I were you. (Thank God I'm not)

Yea man it would be cool although we gotta take into consideration thetime it would take to develop an app like this for the atrix.....I doubt it would be easy and I'm sure it would take time for a Dev to put it together mayb if people are down to donate a little it might be an incentive....we'll see

That's correct, the atrix is doing this already thanks to faux's custom kernel. (All though I thought this was a function of the tegra2 chip, but maybe it had to be enabled which has been done through the kernel?)
Either way this app is not needed unless you want to micro manage what the kernel is already doing.

Doesn't CPU Tuner have an option to use only one core as a profile? I have it checked off in my settings.
It does without the custom kernal download cpu gauge nd ull see its offline sometimes but jus touching the screen turns both cores to max.

I would love to know how many people have hardware bricked their xplay through extreme Overclocking. You will hear many warnings about bricking your phone through OCing on the forums but I don't know of one person who has actually done it. I always feel a little uncomfortable when I OC my devicedue to the fear of hardware failure.
Ive been running mine overclocked to 1.5Ghz for about 24hrs now with no issue
Between 1.2 and 1.5 are the safe operating parameters for the Xperia Play. It differs from handset to handset though. Yours might be unstable at a lower overclock than mine for example.
Best thing to do if you plan on OCing is to try it in increments to find the limit for your Play. If it starts acting unstable at say, 1.5Ghz, then set it to the setting below that (1.4)

It's like PC CPU overclocking. When you give it too high frequency, it may reboot. Here is potential hazard. If the phone don't turn off, it can burn your phone CPU. But there also (like on PC) many things, that may prevent crash.
You can always use the app Stability Test from Android Market to see which OC speed is best for your phone.

1.9ghz with all governors and I/O settings work for me.
Once I select 2.0ghz the phone shuts off. I never changed voltage values. Perhaps a bump in voltage would get me to 2.0ghz?
I'm not so keen on taking such a risk anyway.
I do think not all Xperia Plays are created equally and consider myself lucky to reach 1.9ghz. The only time I overclock it that high is when I'm using N64oid or GTA3 to prevent occasional lag.
I think 1.6ghz is the sweetspot for most phones.

One time that I overclocked mine at 1.9 GHz and let it run a stress test it froze after a while and didn't reboot until I removed the battery, but it didn't get damaged even though it got pretty hot. Weird...

No, I put OC in the kernels as I understand people use over locking. However, I don't offer any higher that 1.6GHz as higher than that dramatically reduces the lifespan of the device.

I have cooked a few graphics cards in my time so never push my play more than 1.6 ghz I dont want this badboy to break in any way
I have to use 1.6 using doomkernal with smartass. If I go any higher then that, Dolphin Mini won't load properly :/
So who has run their phone at 1.4ghz or above for say a year or more?
My PC has been running an OC of about 30% for about 2 years. I know it will shorten the lifespan of my hardware, but who will keep a PC for 10 years anyway. It will be a dinosaur by then.
If I get 2 years from my phone that is enough
I don't see the point of overclocking all the time... for battery saving if nothing else...(?) Maybe the preinstalled R800i UK stock ROM is better and less bloated than what some people get, but 1GHz with the Snapdragon is fine for general use... web browsing, Shadowgun, Asphalt 6, FIFA, Riptide ... all ran well when I wasn't even rooted. Those games are sold for our phones anyway...
But 1.7GHz is definitely over the limit for me as well. Freeze / reboot after a few minutes.
Since Im using DoomKernel my phone is allways overclocked and i have no problems
For daily usage im using MAX 1,3 / MIN 1,0 and GOUV: Smartassv2 or Powersave.
Only for Quadrant tests sometimes i really set it to 1,8 GHZ
This phone screams at 1.5ghz, why do people feel the need to overclock?
Overclocking in the long run can damage your phone; is this CPU capable of it?
Also, the technology in this should be capable of running everything underclocked, don't you think?
I had a sensation before and had to overclock that to make it usable. This phone requires no such thing. I would underclock this to increase battery life because I know it's still going to be just as smooth!

Agree, OC is not a Mod I need with this fast bad boy!
Even with overclocking on my SIII and Galaxy nexus it still wasn't even close to as smooth as this N4 is without any mods at all. Overclocking is not necessary for this beast. The only reason I would flash a new kernel would be to possibly fix the on screen coloring to be less washed out but even that doesn't bother me.

Undervolted (-100mv) and underclocked to 1.026Ghz, still runs smooth as ever, so my answer would be "No."
And after reading about people getting the red LED of death, I'm not keen to OC even if it was needed. I did so on my GNexus but the CPU in that was terrible IMO.
stock kernel is feel warm when use for awhile, so im not even bother to oc, not trying to ruin this beautiful baby
Simple answer, no. Unless you are a tinkerer or live in a cold weather climate and want a really hot hand warmer
Shouldnt overclocking make it slower? The phone throttles itself pretty hard at the slightest heat increase. If the phone was underclocked it would perform better in benchmarks because it wouldnt get throttled.
Besides I never understood the point of overclocking top end things that far exceed the requirements of current applications. Its not like there are any apps that run too slow. I only overclock my computer after it becomes too slow to handle modern tasks.
Let's overclock to 2.5ghz for the hell of it. We need to own the benchmarks.

I had a sensation too, and when that was first released there were threads asking why people felt the need to overclock that.
The dilemma is that clock speed has very small impact on battery compared to the screen, and the wake lock issue that sucks power in your pocket does not help either. so more clock speed appears to contribute very little to total battery usage.

Running at 1.026GHz you should be able to undervolt to -400 or more. That's what mine is running at.

I want to overclock mine since it doesn't handle NDS emulating (well, one game I want to play) very well.
So I recently changed over to the nexus 4, and I say, it is AMAZING. I just got to the point where the SGS just didnt cut it anymore. It has hung in there for a long time, but its starting to become under-powered for new versions of Android.
So in this guide, I am going to show you how to speed up your Galaxy S, and push it to its max performance.
You will need a custom kernel like Semaphore. I made this guide with no regard to battery life, but i did avoid using un-necessary power.
1. Live OC
- This increases the Bus, Ram and GPU speeds.
- This is very good because information can only be transferred as fast as the bus can transfer it. So if your CPU is fast, but your bus is to slow, it creates a bottle neck. So upping bus speed as well as CPU/GPU/Ram speeds can drastically increase performance.
- Find settings that are stable for your phone. For me this was 123%.
- Note that this will change the CPU clock speed choices that you have. Normal.

2. CPU Clock Speed / Governor
- Increasing Clock Speeds allow your processor to calculate more per second, therefore increasing performance.
- Start by finding the maximum frequency that your device is capable of handling, while still keeping stability. For me, this is 1400MHZ.
- Set lowest clock speed to 200 or 400. 200 is the best all-round, and actually uses less power than 100MHZ due to faster race to idle. I use 400 for performance.
- Use a snappy governor. Min/max is great, it is what i use.
- For more battery. lulzactive, ondemand, and smartass are all good.
- Enable smooth UI tweak.

3. RAM settings / management.
A. MOAR RAM.
- The Galaxy S has very limited ram, so we must make the best of it.
- It has 500mb, but some is allocated for the camera and GPU, so we only get ~400 in the end.
- Use the Bigmem option. Around 400mb, but breaks 720p recording. Its a good sacrifice.
- Also, Un-install any apps that you are not using! This can free up cache space and leave it for important processes. Go to settings/running/caches for more info.
- Go to settings/developer options/background process limit, and set this to keep more ram free. I use 3.

B. Enabling Swap
- Enabling swap allows the kernel to use specially allocated memory (on your SD card) to store cached pages that aren't currently being used, instead of storing them in RAM.
- Frees RAM for foreground or heavy processes.
- Make sure you use a fast SD card, and do not set the swappiness to high, both of these can slow your phone down.

4. CM Performance Settings.
- Setting these properly can also increase performance on your device. It will not create any instabilities.
- I/O schedulers are all very similar. I personally prefer SIO, CFQ, or VR
- Under Memory management, Allow purging of assets and enable Kernel same page merging. Both use more clock cycles, but free needed RAM.
- Avoid ZRAM. Performance gain is not enough for the number of clock cycles needed to compress and decompress the RAM.
- Enable 16 bit transparency. Lighter load on the system when drawing graphics, and has never causes visual artifacts for me.
- Disable surface dithering. One less thing for your device to do, equals more performance.

5. Animation Scales (not necessary)
- This simply makes your device LOOK faster buy increasing the speed of the animations.
- Go to developer options and find Window Animations scale, Transition Animation Scale, and Animator Duration Scale.
- Turn them all to 0.5 for a faster UI.

I over clocked my phone for a long time, and it has had no bad effects. It works great to this day. It reduces, but not significantly that you should worry about.
Most CPUS are designed to last for 10+ years, and you may take a year or two off. Nothing major!

good guide but currently not necassary to do,more and more roms are made with enough to tweak the perfomance already done,ive not found anything that has pushed my phone while on a decent custom rom

it is not necessary at all, but there is nothing wrong with getting as much bang for your buck as you can!

This thread isn't really a guide then, it doesn't look like you can use swap with semaphore.

I'm abit out of the loop. I used devil kernel and it had it. I know cyancore kernel has it!
