So it seems that only certain apps work with multi-screen and it is not just samsung apps.
Here I plan (with your help) to create a difinitive list of all apps that will work.
I have already noticed that some apps allow themselves to be splitscreened even when they do not appear in that list e.g. official twitter app.
Some apps you will find when you press the edit button, you can then drag them to the main list, or remove ones you do not use.
Samsung Apps
- ChatON
- Email
- Gallery
- Internet
- Messaging
- S-Note
- Video Player
Google Apps
- Chrome
- Gmail
- Maps
- Talk
- Youtube
Third Party Apps
- Facebook
- Official Twitter app
- Polaris (Viewer)
Note: you will need to be using Samsung stock keyboard to benefit from typing when on multi-screen mode, otherwise your keyboard will cover the entire bottom screen.
I just installed the official Twitter app and it is now in the multiscreen menu tab

weird its not showing up for me, did you login to the app? maybe its because I have not logged in?
What about S-planner and Calculator app? I would think these would be two of the most useful to use multi-screen, or at least floating over the screen like the galaxy tabs.

a '*' denotes that the app works in split screen but cannot be selected from the list, it must be activated first then another added as the second screen, therefore two apps with the '*' will not be able to be paired together.

Thanks for the info. Bewildering why they would leave out calculator and S-planner from split screen. Two apps that would seem to benefit most from it.
Maybe Samsung will add more apps at future firmware updates.

Anyone know if there is a multi-screen api that devs can use to make compatible apps? It would be epic to get tapatalk and Skype added to the list.

Would love to use Skype with Multi-window. A video call while being able to use the phone.Actually, imagine Skype with video pop up. That would be fairly handy.
Looking forward to the future of the Note 2.

I love android but for all the bragging Google makes about "real " multitasking I find it really lacking, let's say you get an email and you have an attachment you download and open the picture but then someone calls you and you finish the call you press the multitasking button and want to open the picture again but the gallery is not "open" ist not in the recent apps /multitasking list and if you try to open the gallery by yourself with the launcher or a shortcut the picture you were watching a couple of minutes is not there because "gmail open the picture with the gallery but the gallery is not being used " , then you try to go to gmail then to see your picture there but surprise ! The picture is closed and your back on your mail , you have to reopen/ redownload your picture
What do you guys think ? Am I being to picky ?

Works for me.
Are you sure you havn't played with the number of allowed background apps setting in developer options?
Nexus4 has 2GB of RAM, plenty to support the apps you mention.... Android will only start closing background when when memory is low, and form oldest first.
I don't know how exactly android works, but this is my guess on why things happen as you've mentioned.
Each screen in android is called an Activity. When gmail opens picture, it is not opening the entire gallery app.
It's just opening an activity within gallery app to display a picture.Which is why the gallery app is not in multi-tasking list.

If you were to press back you'd go back to the image and such and as a matter a fact i prefer it this way. I don't want every image I view from email to be in my gallery as I didn't save it. The view attachments is a preview of said image. If a call comes in then and it looses focus it I wouldn't expect to go back to the Gallery and find it there since that's not where it was in the first place (even though the Gallery App was the one that opened it. That's like watching videos online then later in the day going back to gallery to expect to find that same video).

If this is happening then it is very likely a problem with the application. Android has a great structure in place for multitasking, but developers also have to do their part to make sure their app works as expected.

If you exit gmail application with the gallery activity still open, of course the picture would appear again when you return. That is live multitasking.

There is an app called PVStar+ (or similar) which allows you to play Youtube in the background. I use it to listen to concerts...
Anytime you get interrupted with a phone call, complete your call, press back, and your gallery image would appear.
The real answer, I just opened gmail, went to an email with image attached, opened in gallery, then press home. Hit multitask key, and the gallery image appears with the gmail icon and name. So the multitask works correctly like it should. Not sure why this thread states otherwise.

No, no you're getting me wrong , what i mean is that it would be better if when you open the gallery the image should be there until you close the gallery when you close it then the picture should be gone which brings me to my other complain, the multitasking button should really kill the apps , not just delete them from the list, well not really kill them since android has to keep the apps "open in the background" just reset them to their "stock state" just so that the background syncing/notifications still work

Well maybe gmail was a bad example, but you have to admit that the way multitasking works in android is very patchy and not only on third developer apps
AW: Multitasking needs some serious improvements :'(
Apps do not multitask at all on Android, only services do. When an app goes to the background, the OS asks it to pause and save its state. When it comes back to foreground, the OS asks the app to resume and load its state. This creates the illusion of multitasking, because the app continues where you left, but only works if the app developer follows the guidelines.
first, i noticed something that was really important to me and that was that you cant copy past a part of an sms like you could with the gs3.
it sucks because it was something i always bragged about to iphone users who had to copy the entire sms. if you guys have any ideas on how to be able to just copy a part of the texts like a home address and stuff.
second, all share control isnt working anymore which i understand considering theyre pushing watchon, however watch on doesnt have a track pad feature that can control the mouse on the samsung tv that you need when browsing the web.
is there any other app that has that feature or an add-on for watch on that would add that feature?
thanks for the help
no one know?
does no one know of any substitutes for these features?

pen windows as popup browser
On my Note 1 if I have the browser running in split mode, any link I click in the other half will be opened here. I'd think pen window would act the same.
A Note 3 owner please confirm this:
1. Create a pen window
2. minimize it
3. click on a link in facebook (or whatever app)
4. Does it activate pen window?
if it does, I think pen window will be an improvement for popup browser, which I am also a big fan of on the Note 1.

It's not the same, it's a workarount !
In that way you need to use multiwindows and you need to open 2 apps and this mean that the apps with links is compatible with multiwindows. With pop-up browser it's not needed (you can also disable multiwindows) and it's more fast and usable on the go.
Click on Link => Open in pop-up browser
Easy, no multiwindows, no more steps, Nothing Else.
You are not convincted ?
Easy Diagram Steps
Note 3 with no pop-up browser
1)Open Multiwindows
2)Drag the Internet app
3)Drag the Compatible App
4)Click on the central blue point and choose the apposite tool
5)Drag and Drop the link on the Internet navigation bar
AMAZING !!! So fast, few steps and .... compatible with all apps ... Ah wait, only with multiwindows compatible app
Note 2 With pop-up browser
1) Open whatever you want app and click the link
2) Choose to open in pop-up browser
Few steps, compatibile with all apps, fastest ..... Don't think i'll use multiwindows to open link instead of a pop-up browser
BTW I'll use the app "Browser window", but this a big missing in Note 3
The way I, and I think a lot of people, use pop-up browser is to click on a link in another app (EG: e-mail) and have the browser content display less than full-screen so the original app (EG: e-mail) doesn't lose focus so you can close the browser content and continue where you left off. The N3 does this automatically. At least mine does. This is clicking on an advert link from within an e-mail. I don't have to "open" or "split" anything to get it to behave this way; it just does.
Pen window as popup browser
I mentioned multi window only as an example. My suggestion is to have a pen window browser minimized, and then click on a link in any app.
Is it directed into the pen-window-browser or a full screen browser is started?
I don't yet have an N3 to check it on

After attending a talk about how to market our applications in better ways I just published a library I developed to ask users to users a rating on the Play Store.
It is extremely simple. It keeps track of the first time the application has been used and a counter of the number of times the application has been launched.
You can configure when you want to ask the user to rate your application both in term of number of launches and days from the installation.
When the conditions are met, the library creates a dialog with a button to open the Play Store page of the application, a button to postpone the alert and a button to dismiss it and never get asked again.
You can get the library from GitHub.
Feedbacks and recommendation about how I could improve it are very welcome.

Step 1ownload the libraries.
Step 2:-Then copy the .lib file to the android libraries folder in the project tree for the app you are designing.
Step 3:- Happy coding!

Thanks for pointing it out. It is extremely important and the parameters regulating when the application should ask for a rating should be set with care.
I decided to try to make it the less annoying possible by showing the message only once (if not explicitly deferred by the user) when both the conditions on the number of launches and on the time from the first launch are met.
Do you have any idea about how I could make the message even less annoying?

I guess a good way would be to be to add a little shiny icon, if the user is curious (s)he will tap on this little icon, and that's the moment to display the pop up kindly asking for the review. This nice little icon taking little space somewhere on the screen would appear after a period of use to leave some time to poke around.
It will have the advantage of playing with end user's curiosity, and not aggressively show a pop-up, since the user will trigger it from it's own action.
Application's developer will be able to use something that fit the current interface or game as icon, not throwing the immersion to trash in a brutal way.
Backup plan in case the user isn't curious would be to still show the pop-up the hard way after some more time.
Some usage example could be adding the icon to the levels list in a game, or adding the icon somewhere in the toolbar for a file manager, text editor. Placing it next to a connect button for a social/messaging application.

Thanks for your comments. I'm going to support custom ways to show the alert to the user. The library will still contain the alert message but developers will be able to show whatever they want (possibly something less invasive) when the conditions are met

What is that you are doing to make sure the dialog will never be displayed twice ?

The library stores its data in a file and when the dialog is marked as processed it sets a flag which disables further notifications.
Actually a user may see the dialog twice on different devices. We could avoid that with the synchronisation of the data file but I don't know if ot is worth the effort

In a file means its not shared preferences right?
So if the user clears the app data, the file content will live ?

Unfortunately I used shared preferences
I was not thinking at the scenario where the user first uninstalls and then reinstalls an application

Ok... we can try creating some sub mechanism for that,
I.E. checking a file in external sdcard (requires pernission).
Or getting data from the internet whether the user has already rated or not.
Hello, using Internet or a file somewhere can be a good idea if the application itself already use on of those permissions, but it's not legit for an app to ask for Internet or file access just for this, security wise, we should only give the strict minimum permissions the application need to work.
