New firmware for the HD+ - Nook HD, HD+ General

So, I looked at my HD+ this morning. It updated the firmware. First thing I saw was an ad in the notifications. Didn't B&N advertise the HD/HD+ as having "no annoying ads"?
Additionally, the book I was reading was back at page 1 when I opened it. Good thing I had a bookmark. How hard is it to save the page I was on before rebooting with the new firmware?
Sent from my Infuse 4G using Tapatalk 2.

Could I please ask, what version is the firmware? 2.0.4 has been the most recent version for quite some time now, and is the version I'm using. It doesn't have any ads anywhere across the device. However, I'm assuming you have something more recent than 2.0.4.
Indeed, yes I see your frustration. I would definitely be if I didn't place a bookmark in a page.
Could I ask, is your Nook HD+ rooted, and Google Play installed, with a different launcher than the stock? If not, I would totally recommend it. I wasn't fond of the idea of rooting and so on, but after doing so, I'm now able to enjoy many of the Android apps and features; especially games such as Angry Birds which is originally free (you have to pay for it from the B&N store).
After rooting, I'm not the only user of the tablet. Haha, I'm not even the main user, my Dad, and brothers are. (I actually gave the tablet to my dad)

It's 2.0.5, check at the end of the thoughts, tweaks and hacks thread. Should be close to this one.

I'm not currently rooted. I have sideloaded apps. But a week ago my Nook mysteriously reset and I haven't sideloaded apps back to it. I will once I find my flash drive with my Linux/adb environment (boot able flash drive). I'm too lazy to make adb work on Win7.
I have CM7 on my Nook Tablet, and Paranoid Android on my phone so I'm not a stranger to rooting.

So. The new firmware isn't the cause of the ads. I bought an app from BN.com and it is the cause of the ads. I paid money and it's showing ads.

Um, which app? Be nice to know which one's acting up

Unblock It. Game is decent entertainment. Worth the $2 I spent, but I uninstalled it because I think PAID software should be ad free. I wouldn't mind ads if the app was free.

[Q] Simplify rooting/updating process

We have 4 rooted Nooks. (We are a homeschool family that loves to read, and don't share well ) We want to keep our root (we like having access to the Market.)
Having four, when updates come out, it is a big headache to get all four updated without losing root. I've been scouring this forum for a few days and have a few questions.
What would you recommend as a way to simplify this process? Run CM7 from SD, dual boot, and then updates can go through internal memory with no worries? Can you switch from SD to internal without rebooting? How often does CM7 have to be updated? (Again, I have 4 to keep up with!) Should I just be patient and wait for autonooter as it's the easiest way? Any other thoughts I should consider?
I wish we weren't so addicted to the rooted Nook! LOL
Also, I've found several threads with links to the CM7...how do you know if you have the most current link?
Thanks so much! This forum is amazing!
If you run cm7 you will not get auto updates. you will not need to worry about that. But with cm7 you will not have the b&n stock launcher which can read magazine and newspaper subscriptions. If you dont care about that then cm7 should be fine. As for how often you need to update cm7, you dont ever need to if you dont want to, and if you want you can pretty much do it every night with nightly builds.

This is the link that you wanna check for CM7 update (nightly and stable)
Is the magazine and newspapers the only thing you 'lose' from BN stock?

In my opinion, yes, but for a net gain! With access to the full market, there is so much more avail to you!

That, and the ability for your nook to sleep. CM7 (which I have just switched to, because I was unable to block the update to my rooted 1.0.1) doesn't actually sleep, so when your screen is off, your battery is still running down.
Some people this does not seem to bother. I seem to have a lesser battery, because even on Stock I was only getting 2-3 days. With CM7 (so far, just installed it yesterday) it looks like I will have to charge it every night, or at least every other night. I've also been powering it down when I'm not going to use it for a while, but then I have to boot it up again, and that takes more time.
When you have four to keep charged, that could be a real hassle.

New to NC and have some ??s

Just got a NC a few weeks ago cause my wife wanted an ereader and I figured this would be a good opportunity to try an android device!
I would like to load CM7 as from my reading that appears the best rom for the NC. I have also read that running from SD cards provides mixed results regarding performance, so I was thinking I should load it to the emmc.
So my questions are
Can I load CM7 and still use the BN ereader app? My wife might kill me if she can't read her books! If so can someone point me to an android newb friendly guide?
If I cannot use the app what do you recommend I do? Is the kindle app any good compared to the BN native app?
Simply using the Nook app from the Android Marketplace will be the easiest way to get ereader functionality back.
Though keep in mind the Android Nook app is absolutely not the same experience as the NC is with the stock firmware. The Nook app will let you read ebooks from your B&N account, but the interface and capability is completely different.

The Nook app from Market is not the same, your wife will not be able to read her magazine subscriptions and it's also missing some other stuff like Children's books.
IMHO, if you want to mess around and "try an android device" but at the same time avoid a scenario of "wife might kill me if she can't read her books!", or even worse, wife kills you because you wiped the Nook, then go get verygreen's installer and put CM7 on an SD card.
So long as you install onto a compatible SD card, you will get similar performance as to eMMC. No "mixed results" here, I guarantee you that you won't even be able to tell the difference.
You can mess around all you want, try out the stables and nightlys, overclock to your heart's content, fill it up with apps, browse and dl all the pr0n you can find, and when your wife wants to use the Nook, just take out the card and she'll have a completely stock Nook.
I'm in the same situation. Bought the wife a NC for mother's day, and want to expand the capability, but maintain the stock functionality. Kid's books are a must to keep around, one of the reasons I bought it in the first place.
What I'm looking at is using the manual nooter http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054027 to root and add gapps. This should maintain the stock reader functionality and open the device up to more apps, and to do things like youtube etc.
So far this seems like the best way to open things up a bit, and give the device some additional functionality without completely changing the experience or losing some functionality. While *I'd* like to go in and install CM7 or one of the 3.0 ROMs, it's her toy, not mine so I need to keep things as close to stock as possible.
Can anyone confirm this approach is going to get me where I want to be, or refute it? Is there something I might be missing which would end up wiping any points I gained for the gift?
I'm in the same boat. Any one have an opinion on deeperblues hc on sd? I'm probably one of the few that's not a fan of cm7. I just want to keep stock NC, with the option of a tablet experience.

I used Deeper-Blue's version of HC 2 days after i got my NC. I've been using it for roughly 2 months now. I didn't like the Nook app since it was first released last year i was unable to sync from my LG Ally so i couldn't use it on my PC as well, so i went with the Kindle App.
I switched over to MadCat's update Saturday and outside of a few quirks i like it a lot. It runs the latest version of the Kindle app as well.

if you have a 8 gb micro sd card you can back up the whole stock rom and ut would run just like anything else on your sd card.
Nice choice since some of us like the magazine supprt that only the bn rom has.
Right now im dual booting rooted stock 1.2 and CM7 Nightly's on eMMC
works great and I love not having to switch out SD cards and being able to access the contents of the SD on both OS's.

[Q] Incentives for stock Nook

Are there any incentives for dual-booting stock and a CM firmware?
Is there anything stock that the official B&N app can't do?
I have a feeling I would never even boot into it, and don't want to waste my time

The official android B&N Nook reader app cannot read interactive children's books. Only the version on the stock ROM can read them. That is because those books are really interactive applications that look like books but only run on stock. That and worrying about warranty issues are the main reasons folks leave stock on emmc and run CM on SD.

Then there is literally no incentive for me to dual boot... I bought my Nook solely for the purpose of the tablet modification... I ran stock firmware for about 20 minutes in total, right when I took it out of the box!
Thanks for the reply!
If you registered your stock software, de-register it before you flash the new CM rom. That way if you ever want to sell or give away the Nook to someone else, it is unincumbered to your account. You can still put the nook app on CM and register that.
I got it for news aggregation. Magazines and the Sunday paper that you can't get on the app. If you want a tablet, kindle and nex7 are better. I'm a B&N member and use it.

The latest B/N app allows you to read papers and magazines. I thought that covered them all, or is it only certain ones?

That was one of the biggest features people were complaining about when they were running the Android app, vs. the Nook Color app. Haven't tried any of the magazines myself other than a preview of NatGeo they sent out this Summer, but it was nice to see the option!
To the OP, the biggest things I miss are the free reading of anything from the eBook store, where you could sit inside a B/N Cafe and read for an hour. Also, they used to send out freebie coupons which you'd then show to the barista, such as a free frappacino or large-sized latte. Not sure if they do that anymore since I rooted, and eventually changed up the ROM completely.

Mine updated and lost root. Haven't gotten around to doing it again. But yeah, when I got it I was a member of their club. Got discounts on everything, spent alot of time there. City I was in had no local coffee shop, so I went to b&n all the time. Starbucks coupons made it worth it. But I don't get the expensive drinks anyways. Unless I get a gift card. I mainly drink black eyes or espresso shots. That's normal price coffee.

New to tablets

I recently purchased a Nook HD and this is the first tablet I have owned. I am not sure what any of this lingo is about rooting and what. I know that two of my sisters have a really good amazon game on their nexus and I would like to have it. There is a version for Nook but its a terribly bastardized version. Is there a way for me to install amazon play store on this thing?

Yes, you need to go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and install the gapps + extras zip. That will allow you to get apps from the Google Play Store and later, if you want, the Amazon Store. No need to root. Read item 1 and 3.

Rooting the Kindle Fire 7(7th Generation)

Over the past two days I have been searching and scavenging unrelentlessly for a solution to my problem. Someone got me a kindle fire 7(7th Gen) for christmas and I decided I wanted it running stock android. It came with FireOS 5.6.0.0 and recently updated to 5.6.1.0, last night I was working on it before it updated and I couldn't seem to root it. The root wouldn't go through or it'd fail right at the beginning. After updating to 5.6.1.0 I came very close to rooting and I think it is a solution in the future.

Man that would be great, I hope someone can break Fire OS 5.6.1.0, I would love to run the newest android OS on this Tablet. Would make a great OBDII diagnostic Tool for working on cars. :highfive:
5.6.1.0 can be rooted on the HD 10. I'm told it's rooted with dirty cow via KingoRoot. If the new fire 7s have the same kernel, there might be a possibility. As of now, it appears the HD 10 2017 had an unpatched kernel that allowed for the root. it's something Amazon has yet to fix.
When will we have root?
I have three of these and need root access for them to be worth a damn!!!!
Hello,
I also have a new fire HD7 (7th Gen) with 5.6.1.0.
It is for a kid, so I would like to root it to get amazon stuff away and install Google ones.
Is it still unrootable?
Thanks.

Looking forward to a root install on mine keep on rooting.
for a 69$ cost, it would be worth it if i could root and get it to do the things from google play that the fire store doesnt have. Tried two 10ionch ones and i had less than desirable results
How likely it is that this device will be rooted in the future? Look like there is no development for this product.
I’m considering to get one for my kids, but without root I prefere to select another device...
Noticed a few people say they want the root so they can install Google Play store, you can without root on the current Fire 7. Just did, you need to install the framework, account manager app, play services and then play store apk. Working, but quite slow, just got the Fire 7 so may be doing a few bits in the background updating so maybe causing the slowness.. or its just been a long time since i used a £30 tablet.. haha.
+1 above. One of the first things I did was put the Play Store on it. It would be useless to me without it.
The reason I want to root it is to see if it can be any faster with stock android. As it stands it is very slow for almost everything.
Should we stop getting updates at 5.6.1? Is that even possible?

Really hoping you're able to root it.
Just got mine in the mail. Should've researched it a bit more before purchasing but it was only $17 so I jumped on it.
It is extremely slow for a quad core, 720P device with 2GB RAM. I expected it to be much quicker. Does Amazon put that much bloatware or is there another reason it is so slow?

Nearly every amazon app will consume resources. Many will reactivate after a force close. A lot of it is because of the apps.
Ok, thanks for pointing that out. I will probably try that Kindle tool or fire tablet tool, whatever it's called to cancel OTA and remove some Amazon apps.
I've removed most of the stuff etc, but now I got a competely unusable tablet. Tasker etc works, but the lockscreen cant be removed. For motion detection quite bad. Rooting it also doesn't work, but that's nothing new. Should I sell it and buy a 10, should I update it? I was on 5.6.0.0 now I downgraded to 5.4.0.0

If you screwed up, just so a factory reset. Without root a thing you disabled or 'uninstalled ' will come back to life and you can start over. I love my HD 10 but hate it too. Finding it difficult to get a rom to flash. Woo i guess it all boils down to what you want your tablet to do. If you have a fire 7, you will be very United due to memory and what not. HD 10 is so far excellent with memory when debloated.

I want to use it just for a home automation dashboard. Just bought it cause it's been 30€, so I thought it could be a good tab for the wall. With unusable, I mean I can't put it on the wall, because the lockscreen is still there. It would be kinda useless to have motion detection with a lockscreen. And rooting doesn't work, or is there a new exploit? I would really love to root it, then I can finally use it. It's just lying around right now, until it can be rooted. I've removed the OTA update thingies, so no updates will be downloaded. Also it's shut down, so no problem there. I'm on 5.4.0.0 like said, if I have to upgrade to root, I'll do that, but for now, I try to stay on the lowest version possible, so when an exploit comes, I'm prepared
I hate this tablet there needs to be a root. it runs incredibly slow and I think it's because Amazon's apps are running please find a root solution
