[Q] Weird Contact Image Appearing in Messaging App - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
In my stock messaging app, many of my contact pictures show a weird image next to the contact name.
Image: http://i.imgur.com/rSSuq.png
Can anyone explain why that contact picture appears?
Thank you.

The phone or the silhouette?

It means you haven't assigned those contacts a photo

I am talking about the images of the phone with "SMS" on them, not the silhouette of the face.
Why does this occur for some but not others?

Have you ever had the SIM card in a Windows phone?

I had a windows mobile phone 3 years ago. But I have changed sim cards since then. I just got a new micro sim for my nexus 4. The issue started a couple months ago on my Samsung captivate. Now it has carried over to this device.
Any ideas?

Do you use GroupMe? Pretty sure this is the cause of the issue. I think GroupMe assigns people with dumphones that icon in conversations. If you choose to sync GroupMe contacts with your phone contacts, I think your phone will display that icon for them.

This was the issue. I simply disabled the sync of group and contacts, then reset the app.
Thank you so much for your help.

So I'm confused as to what's different from this and my G1 with 1.6. I have synced my contacts and when I go to contacts from the home screen I see them all (with the little g next to them), but when I try to assign a ringtone to an individual contact as I did on my G1, it takes me to an empty contact list with no option to see my contacts. What's going on? Already getting tired of ToughWhiz getting in the way of my Android experience.
Niceee....of all the things I had trouble on it was this... I feel dumb lol

Doesn't work from google contacts. To assign ringtones to fiddler contacts I'm using Ringdriod. Anyone else has any solutions for google contacts?

Ringo Lite. It's a PITA to have to install a separate app but it works perfectly.

Contact photos

So this is my return to android after some time and I'm trying to get my device all setup. One of my biggest pet peeves about Android was the terrible resolution of the contract photos.
I have Facebook and installed the app. I went through the sync procedures to get the contacts matched up and noticed that the photos look terrible. But, I have one contact that had a gorgeous hd pic. I don't understand what is different about his contact info but why can I do to fix the test of them?

Suggest you turn off the contact sync in the FB app and install Haxsync.
I second the poster above. Download Haxsync and make sure to check the 'use high resolution photos' option.

Talking bout the Android Device ID or something different? (Titanium Backup usually lets you generate a new one, or restore one from a previous backup).

Where exactly does it say this, maybe you're thinking of email signatures or such, and it would depend on the type of email client. Normally your actual android device ID isn't just arbitrarily transmitted in an email.

It's not a signature and it's not the android device ID, they don't match. My work email pulls it off the phone. It even shows it when I set up the email. I did some research and that's how I found out it's called a mobile device ID.

So you're using an app specific for work then I'm guessing. If you got access to the original rom where the ID is correct, you can install titanium backup from the play store there. Then backup the settings (under preference there's a way to save the titanium backup settings to the SD Card/media space), then restore new rom, install titanium backup again, point it to the sdcard/external for it's backup, and you may be prompted with a prompt that your android ID differs from the other, and given the opportunity to restore it from backup (however bear in midn you may have to reinstall some applications that are dependent on your new ID).
There may be an easier way, but it's just weird that you have a work email that would work based off that.
It's not a host name I just tried that too.

That looks very much like a setting you jsut set in the app/email client. Just like the iPhone has that, it's in the settings. What email client are you using, should be just like the XDA/Tapatalk app where you can modify the manual signature.

Oh just the standard ol email app. Double check the settings of that app , On the message list -> menu -> settings -> Tap account -> Signature
(by default nothing shows in the signature area when I send myself a test email thru my yahoo account, nor nothing in the mail headers to designate operating system)
Unless of course you're saying that it's being performed serverside.
How about in developers options their is one called device hostname and it can be edited, by default my devices all say Android-some random numbers and letters.

Nexus 4 Facebook sync

Hi All
I would like to know how to sync my contacts with Facebook. I need the profile pictures as contacts' picture.
Thanks for the help in advance

best sync app i know of
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ro.weednet.contactssync
HaxSync is hands down the best contact sync for facebook. It will let you pick how accurate names have to be (similar spelling or exact, and everything in between), cropping the face, if the picture they have is too big and all in HD (no low res pics). Also lets you sync facebook calendar and contacts birthdays into their contact card and their timeline statuses.

Thank you all. Why Facebook does this sync? Isn't there a setting for that?

There's a LOOOOOOONG running issue between FB and Google over all of this...Google it for more info as it's too long to get into here!
Just a quick question..
Does these apps incorporate all those Facebook contacts into our phone's contacts which aren't there at present?
As in I have a number of Facebook contacts which aren't on my phone and i don't even want them to sync.... Just want the pictures of people in my phone through Facebook.

Ditto this. Plus, it is easy and quick to manually add/change a profile picture from FB to Google contacts. And this actually works better since on occasion some people insist on having a goofy @SS profile pic.

Hi, all
I am using Ubersync for facebook in my N4. It has imported all of my contacts but no phone numbers. How can i sync my facebook contacts with phone numbers to my Contact list. Normal sync thru the phone is also unsuccesful

And WTF is this?

I know this is probably more related to the actual FB app but I feel like it's a complete violation of privacy and I don't particularly want this happening but can not seem to find a setting to turn it off.. Here is a scenario where this would be completely out of place and unacceptable..
You take a picture of something private .. You or a friend gets your phone and opens the Facebook app... Oh look the last 3 pics you took.... Really? WTF? Anyone know how to turn this off?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Check settings. Turn off facebook sync photos.
Just using Facebook is violation of privacy. Even if you find away to turn it off that feature; Facebook is always sucking up information from your device (contacts, location, call logs, pictures, and so on). This is one of the reason I don't use Facebook.

That's definitely true... Makes me sad. I think in this issue though the most disturbing thing is that it's accessing another app (gallery) and then putting the 3 most recent pics in the app (suggesting) you post them. Who's to say their appropriate to post. I don't like this at all.

Don't sync photos is already selected. This is new. It's not syncing my photos it's just suggesting photos from my gallery (the last 3 taken) for me to post. Very annoying. I will definitely check out the other app you put on here. I apologize I couldn't quote because the XDA app kinda sux.

Guys, just get another app for Facebook. There's tons of apps that don't these extra permissions and don't steal your data, AND THEY RUN BETTER than the stock Facebook app. Example : fast for facebook (search it!)

Yes that is a bug. However if you tap the time at the right hand side of each post, the corresponding post is highlighted, not the one above it.
