[Q] Looking for beginner guide.. - Acer Iconia A500

Hello all, i've been reading on the forums so many pages and more I read, more options are available.
Simple, I just want to have some fun with my A500. I never hack it, so it is at the current ics 4.0.3
So, where can someone point me to a current guide for unlocking it, installing a loader, current Rom, etc
I am looking for something basic, fast that can support bluetooth for my OBD reader. Other than than, i just use
my tablet to surf and watch movies.
So, I see that there was Lightspeed but, it is kind of old, April 2012.. After reading about 6 or the 85 pages, i stopped.
Each pages bring new options for bootloader, etc each pages bring more questions than solutions.
Thanks in advance.
JC.

It's been a while since I rooted my device, so I haven't actually done this technique, but this thread seems to be a good, detailed guide on how to go from stock Android to a custom ROM.

[Q] Rooted, Stock, 3.01 manual update instructions?

Hi all,
I'm sorry if this has been discussed somewhere, but I am very green when it comes to rooting/flashing/manually updating the OS on android devices, specifically the Xoom.
I currently have a 3G Xoom with 3.0.1 which is rooted. I didn't put any custom rom on it. I saw there's a zip file on the other sub-forum with the 3.1 update for 3G Xoom devices, but the instructions assume a certain level of proficiency/familiarity with the process (which appears to be almost vastly different across various android devices).
If someone would be as so kind as to post a relatively detailed step-by-step process of updating a rooted 3.0.1 xoom to 3.1 and re-rooting (without having to lose all the apps and settings installed) I would be MUCH OBLIGED and APPRECIATIVE!
Many thanks to anyone who has the patience and inclination to post something definitive!

P3Droid seems to have posted exactly what I was looking for: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074502

So what am I missing?

Reading through these forums has been a real education; much thanks to everyone for posting and sharing!
I was given a reconditioned A500 by a friend (obviously a very good friend!), stock Acer_A500_1.104.02_COM_GEN1 with Android v3.0.1. Rooted with Gingerbreak, everything running fine. Really love the tablet.
Anyway, been looking over all of the choices for upgraded ROMS so graciously provided by members of the community, and hit a little analysis-paralysis. What are the major advantages (other than the "latest-and-greatest" factor) to upgrading to 3.1, 3.2, or 3.2.1? Is there any "must-have" advantage to the upgrade? And will my GEN1 have issues with some of the ROMs developed from GEN2 packages?
Thanks for being patient with an old dog trying desperately to learn some new tricks...
The later the version of Honeycomb generally the more stable and quicker it runs. You probably notice with 3.0 and 3.0.1 there are a lot of force closes on apps. There are other benefits to newer versions, such as ability to plug in USB peripherals etc, but I don't know all of them off the top of my head.
One problem that many people learned (myself included) was that when we got the upgrade to 3.2, those who had root lost it and nobody could figure out how to root it because Acer changed their boot loader. Since then people have found ways around it. Custom ROMs that the devs had created here usually make the tablet run better (of course there are risks to doing this and the occasional bug!). Some people run custom ROMS to overclock, some load them to remove Acer Bloatware and some just have the urge to try new and great things.
In terms of having issues with GEN1 and GEN2 packages, when you are installing custom ROMS made by the DEVs on XDA you won't have to worry. I think the GEN1 and GEN2 are just for ACER to distinguish things like the country that the device is from, or to determine when they should be receiving OTA updates.

Early HC versions have issues with Netflex, video, voice, GPS, etc. Alot of the drivers have been patched since 3.0.1.

If you want a mostly stock rom with just Root and busybox I suggest this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1429199
It is very fast and very smooth. haven't run into any problems or force closes yet.
I found that the full screen feature of 3.2 and 3.2.1 was a great reason to upgrade. My iconia came with 3.1 on it and i was content with that rooted until i learned that my apps that didnt fill the screen (guitar hero 5) and some that just didnt run (dance dance revolution s) worked great in full screen on 3.2+.
Greatly appreciate all of the responses. It's pretty clear I need to read the threads here and learn how to upgrade the Android in this tablet. (I especially appreciate starkiller86's pointer to the 3.2.1 sorta-stock image...that looks like the most sensible direction for me to go.)
Thanks again!

[Q] Verizon S5 - 4.4.2 upgrade to 4.4.4 - whats best?

Samsung S5 - Verizon
SM-G9000V
Running 4.4.2 (ANCG)
Rooted with TWRP / SAFESTRAP / SUPERSU / XPOSED FRAMEWORK
so here's the question.
I've run across numerous different ways to upgrade to 4.4.4
1) now that some time has gone by since this release was originally put forth, what has been decided is the best way to upgrade and retain root? Or at least regain root with minimal to no loss to rooted applications and their data?
2) If phone requires wiping, what is the best way to bring it back to as close to exactly how it was in look and feel, settings, tweaks etc?
Background : I won't ever post a question without having done a lot of research I don't want to waste anyones time and if they've already written it I certainly will take the time to read it. I currently have
Titanium Backup Pro
SuperSu
TWRP
SAFESTRAP
My Backup Pro
Each variation of restoring payphone seems to offer different aspects. Titanium backup seems to do a good job of restoring apps, TWRP seems to do a pretty good job of bringing back other portions.
I wanted to see if we can get 1 clear post, that says if youre on 4.4.2 ANCG, and you want to upgrade to 4.4.4, latest build, :
1) Here's how to do it, even if its a quick link to the correct instructions or the most relevant and accurate ones.
2) IF the phone has to be wiped, reset, or any loss of anything in order to do that, here's how to bring it back the simplest cleanest way.
would love to see this wrapped up in one clean and simple easy discussion. I realize this information is in scattered bits and pieces all through the forums. I've read everything I could find. It's hard to tell which post came out before someone found a better way and after someone found the best way and then what way ended up being the endorsed way excetera excetera. Very hard to tell from all of the variations.
Therefore seems like a fresh thread with really clear instructions as of todays date - THIS is the best way, would really be helpful to a lot of people and I would be very appreciative for your help
I really really enjoy reading all the great things you guys post, been an avid reader for about a year now, and just continue to be amazed at the incredible depth of helpful expertise and knowledge that I find on here.

Rooting and installing custom rom how to?

Hi all, I've looked around and tried my best to understand how to room and install a custom rom on my Xoom 2 but I can't find the files to do such job. Every time I would click the link for the tutorial to download the rom required, the page isn't found.
If someone could point me in the right direction with how to root and install a custom rom, I would much appreciate it.
I've found my old tablet and would like very much to update it, it's kind of useless now. I can't find the files aswell
It's a shame as its such a good tablet. I only want to use it for web browsing and sitting in bed watching Youtube or Twitch, but with Youtube, when I launch the app It sends me to the play store as there is a updated version, but it won't let me update it.
So I assume that the tablet's software is too old and that's why I wanted to install a more up to date rom.
Hopefully someone will step forward and give us the help and the right direction to the files needed
Same here
I would like to flash a custom ROM to a Xoom 2 Media Edition (MZ607) because some important apps won't open in the stock Android 4.0.4. It looks like some people had developed ROMs for it to run Android 5.1 (or 5.1.1), but I am not able to find this ROM. If someone knows where this ROM is supposed to be, I will be very grateful! I rooted it with Kingoroot but this won't get me any far without a ROM...

Various questions regarding rooting

I just bought an S5E, and having owned two previous Samsung devices, I expected a fair amount of bloat, but not nearly the amount I discovered. It makes my previous two Samsungs look downright slender. Particularly loathsome, in my view, is the way SS has hijacked Find My Mobile and Google Messages, the latter of which, as a Google Fi customer, I have to use for SMS.
Hence, I am going to root, and cleanse this otherwise delightful device with the fire of 1000 suns. I have rooted Android devices before, but it's been a while, and my memory hasn't improved with age, so I have several questions, some about rooting in general, and some specific to this device. I should add that, while I am not opposed to performance gains and newer versions of Android and suchlike, my only pressing concern is to de-Samsungize the bejeebers out of this thing. Other than that, something like a stock version of Android and an otherwise low-maintenance tablet will make me very happy. So, here goes:
I have the PewPewk method bookmarked, and believe I have one or two others using various combinations of ADB and Magisk and suchlike bookmarked. I imagine I can handle them, but they look complicated. Are any of the apparently simpler approaches found here effective, sufficient to achieve my goals, and unlikely to brick me?
What are the advantages of Custom Android Recoveries relative to the stock Android, and if they add much in the way of complications, can I live without them?
Do I need a custom ROM, and more specifically, do I need one to give me non-Samsungized versions of Find My Mobile and Google Messages? At a minimum, I need the garden-variety version of Google Messages so I can text like a normal person, not a Samsung zombie.
Again, I don't really need tweaks for performance or new versions of Android, but I do need to get bug fixes and security patches with a minimum of fuss. How do I find that minimal sweet spot?
If the answers to one or more of these question are that yes, I need a custom recovery and/or ROM - I suspect this will be the case - then can anyone recommend good candidates that will get me the outcomes I'm looking for without perplexing me too greatly and making me want to cuss?
Can anyone identify the questions which I should be asking, but which didn't occur to me, and then pose them and answer them?
I'm confident that I'm in the right forum to get the answers I need, so all advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hello there
Your questions are really deep, maybe that is why no answers so far
I'm not an expert at all, so I can't give you comprehensive answers. But I rooted Tab S5e successfully (on stock ROM) and I've read a lot about modifying it, so I can share just few hints.
I wouldn't bother of any other rooting method than Magisk. However, this tab isn't as easy to root as most of the other devices... By far the best and comprehensive guide to root the stock ROM is here:
Galaxy Tab S5e (SM-T720) - Root Instructions (Release 1.0) | XDA Developers Forums (xda-developers.com)
If you follow it closely, you shouldn't have problems. I did it and can confirm it's working fine.
I haven't used custom ROM on this device, but there are some available, especially LineageOS from the recognized developer and one of the LineageOS team member. You can take a look on those threads:
[ROM][OFFICIAL][gts4lvwifi][10] LineageOS 17.1 | XDA Developers Forums (xda-developers.com)
[ROM][UNOFFICIAL][gts4lvwifi][11] LineageOS 18.1 | XDA Developers Forums (xda-developers.com)
In order to flash custom ROM you need custom recovery. There is TWRP available:
Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e WiFi (twrp.me)
Again, I did not try to flash it, I've heard it's tricky, so you need to dig dipper inside those threads and articles.
Alternatively, there is a method to debloat stock ROM without root. It is described in this thread:
[Guide] Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e Debloat Without Root-Info | XDA Developers Forums (xda-developers.com)
Hope it helps!
Thank you for your input. By the time you offered it, I had plunged ahead with the rooting method you suggested. Overall, it went well, but I'm having a few issues with the tablet since getting Lineage 17.1 installed.
I have made a new post requesting help with those issues, which can be found here. If you can offer any advice thereupon, I would be greatly appreciative, and if not, thank you for your efforts above.
