App compatibility issue? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys just a quick question is there a work around to make play store actually see the nexus 7 as a tablet? Only reason I ask is that there are a few apps and games that this device is more than capable of playing yet the market will not allow me to download? is there a work around apart from downloading the apk from other sites. I don't want to have to get copies of the game illegally as they put a lot of effort into apps and games and deserve to get paid for great apps. Please help

Guess not

I know the feeling. There are a few Gameloft games on the store that are on sale for 69p/0.99c and they won't download because of compatibility issues, yet the Nexus 7 is more than capable of playing them.
I'm guessing these problems are Android related, probably not 4.2xx compatible, or something. So I'm wondering if your issues are similar ? Android OS issues rather than hardware issues. Perhaps buy them, don't download them from the store, get them from those "other" sites. You then don't get the bad feeling of not paying the dev. I'm thinking of doing this with Modern Combat 2, 9mm, and NOVA2.

Modify your build.prop, all you need to do is change the brand, model, and device. I just fooled google play into thinking this nexus7 was a xoom and downloaded nova2.
Make sure to backup the default build.prop, and your system with your recovery of choice.

Some questions before I buy...

1. Whats it like as a wireless hotspot, my Galaxy S2 is flaky at best with lots of dropouts?
2. Can it play avi files out of the box, and if not, whats playback like in Moboplayer, any sync issues?
3. What sort of games are currently available in the PS store?
4. Hows the camera?
5. Has anyone loaded Google Music and streamed their music?
Thanks all!!

This is just personal experience, but YMMV.
1. Wireless hotspot has worked great for me. I hook my iPad up to it when I'm at my grandparent's house and there's never any loss of connection. That's even on the awful Kentucky EDGE network, too.
2. I can't really help there because I never play those types of videos.
3. The PS store? If you mean the Playstation Pocket app, if you're in America (and possibly Canada), nothing. All you gots is Crash Bandicoot. FPSE is better for PS1 emulation, anyway, if that's what you're looking for. A lot of people get their games from Gameloft.
4. The camera is pretty decent. It's better than the camera on my old Desire HD that I sold. It would be better with different software (it's the AOSP app), so download Vignette or Camera 360 if you want better pictures. On this subject, the FFC looks black and white unless you're in good light.
5. I have and it worked fine on said slow network. The speaker is really loud, too.
adb shove iPad2post.apk to /forum/thread

2. The Stock Media Play can not play .avi straight out the box.....BUT......all you need to do is download a better media player and it will work straight out the box.
MoboPlayer is my recomendation to you. It plays everything i have thrown at it so far.
3. The actual Playstation games are not worth buying at all imo. Just download FPSE and get all your PS games on the emulator. (leglally you need to own the games before you download them, blah blah technical blah blah).
The Xperia Play games from Gameloft and a few other devs are quite decent quality. I love Gameloft games. Some people do not though. Remember this is a phone first and foremost. Not a dedicated games console.
4. Camera is OK. 5MP is decent. Not amazing, but clear enough to have them pictures full blown on your PC monitor without seeing many pixels.
The video recording is ok too. Not 720p, but not far off, it takes a keen eye to tell the difference.

2. Yes, Moboplayer works great. You'll have no issues playing standard def content, and in some cases 720p works too.
3. Very few, Crash bandicoot, midevil, and jet moto or something along those lines, haven't used it in a while. I used fpse and play the games I want to play (Final Fantasy VII in my case) I also use it for Super nintendo, nintendo, gameboy, and N64.
4. Fine for a cell camera. Not as good as the more camera oriented cyber-shot phones, but it holds it's own. Also the shoulder buttons make it easy to tak pictures compared to touch screen shutter.
As stated this phone has the loudest speakers out of any phones I've seen. It has two very nice cell phone speakers rather than the standard one, so everything from ring tones to games are plenty loud. They also have extremely good frequency response for cell phone speakers. Music, games, videos, everything sounds "fuller" on the Play compared to other phones.
Thanks all for the great answers.
Overall I just want to make sure I can load Google Music app despite being in the UK and that there aren't audio sync issues with avi files like some phones i've tried.

Also found this on web
Reports are flooding in that Google has extended invites to its cloud-based music streaming service for residents of the UK. The buzz over Google Music has been building since it launched in the US following Google I/O.
In order to enjoy the music-streaming goodness that is Google Music Beta , you’ll need a Nexus S running Android 2.3.4. Users who fit the bill will be greeted with a self-install notification following the completion of the sign up on Google’s website.

Yeah i've installed the US version of music before in the UK by grabbing the apk from Modaco or using Market Access (through root).

If you're addicted to flashing ROM's, don't get it. I only got one because I traded my Inspire for it.
The game buttons are the selling point. I personally missed development going on...so my mom needed a phone with a SAMOLED so I got a Nexus S for her. :-D

Does anyone know whether this game is available for our phone? Also can anyone reccomend me a game similar to that game.
Also what games can you reccomend me to play?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I am sure it will come to Android eventually.
I have looked for similar but found nothing like it . I thought that by now developers would start preferring android over iOS considering we have a greater market share on smartphones.
Exactly, Developers can get a lot of money from Android as it is a huge share of the app markets.

Try Run Run Bear. It is similar to Jetpack Joyride.

Gameloft Live available with lets golf 3 plus others

Hi just to let any that dont know there is a gameloft live app on the market which once installed and signed in has a list of compatible gameloft game downloads one of the games is lets golf 3 that works on the note. It also might be a handy app for other gameloft releases for the note as the android market seems to have alot of gameloft games missing for me.
This might be old news but i only found it last night, might be useful to someone.

Also of note is that the gameloft asphalt 6 HD did not work after I got my Note.
I contacted Gameloft and they sent a new download fix and it worked.
So not sure if asphalt 6 HD will show up in the Gameloft live but its possible to have it on your Note now.

and can be downloaded for FREE .
anyhow gameloft confuses me a lot, many of there games are working on the note, but 'flagged' as not working by gameloft, so they cant be seen/downloaded on the market. one have to use all these tricks, like downloading on another device and using Titanium, or buying direct in the gameloft store selecting a other device type and so on. personally i stopped buying from them until the fixed there system and everything is official released for the note.
Asphalt worked on my Note fine with no problem, although I had already purchased it on another device. It still doesn't show in the market.
Great that it is listed free on Samsung Apps though! Anyone who hasn't got should! It is amazing (a real battery drainer though!)

Google might allow you access to the books, but Movies are always blocked on a rooted device.
Personally, if you are trying to have the "best" Google Play experience/compatibility, I don't see the draw to unlocking/rooting the device. When I had my BN Nook Color, it made since as I'd wanted access to an Android OS newer than Froyo.
However, is the Nexus 7 languishing on an older version of Android OS? Nope, it's actually cutting edge. Other than benchmarking, I don't even see the need to overclock this puppy. It's gaming experience is top notch!
I'd always lamented that Hulu+ also wasn't available on a rooted device. So there's what you need to balance. Are the benefits for "root" enough to encourage you to do it?
If the answer's "yes", then by all means root the device, just be aware that some applications are designed to not perform correctly on a "rooted" device, possibly to answer DRM issues to that product vendor.

Huh? I play Google movies AND Hulu+ on my rooted Nexus 7 all the time...
Root is required for me as I need to do full backups and you really can't do that without root.
If you start messing with the dpi If free device your going to have problems, not because of root, but because the apps don't match the settings...

Is this the standard, "Use Flash + web browser" way?
The actual Amazon Video app would be sweet. I've been digging through old threads going back to the original Fire trying to get this going on my N7 this weekend. Video quality aside, it would be nice to get everything going so you can download videos to device. For, hypothetically, loading "A Charlie Brown Christmas" or somesuch for the flight home next week.
Anyhow, so far I understand this may be a pipe dream. But if anyone has any more recent tips on Amazon Video + Nexus, please hit me up. So far the farthest I can get is registering my N7 as a device (shows up in Amazon even), seeing my account and videos, but then FC upon clicking on any vids.
One more try, then... *starts digging through newest KFHD dump*

New Amazon Instant Video App
Today Amazon Instant Video arrived to the Google Play Store. Unfortunately, it is only compatible with Google TV. Considering it can run on those, which are essentially android, why not try to find a way to get it to run on our phones and tablets. Considering the screen-shots they have on the Play link, it could be used on our devices. There has to be a way, maybe by editing the build.prop, to get Google Play to think that your phone or tablet is actually a Google TV. I tried a few things but could not manage to get it to work, but I'm sure someone with more experience could figure this one out.
Update: I recently saw that there is a Google Play version for Google TV on the Play Store so maybe that could help if we could get that running on a device.

We have a thread going over on the Kindle HD forum, and I've been trying to get this download by using a build.prop change. From what I can find online its only compatible with new LG TVs, the 47G2 and 55G2. And from a youtube review of one of these TVs the device name was "LG Google TV" so I tried a build.prop with manufacturer "lge" (since thats what they use on other devices IIRC) and device name "LG Google TV". Yet it still showed as incompatible.
If we could just get a copy of this apk, maybe it will work. Still don't know why Amazon can't release a native Android app. The apk from the OG Kindle Fire works on GB but FCs on ICS and JB. The apk from the 2nd gen Kindle Fire HD FCs on everything.
FWIW here is teh list of compatible devices.
