Can't touch bottom of screen - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well, I'm running the latest CM10.1 Nightly, and no other mods. For some reason, in some apps I can't touch things at the bottom of the screen. For instance, in Snapseed, I can't apply an edit, because it doesn't let me touch it. Also, in the messages app it takes forever to get the keyboard to come up. Does anyone else have this problem? Is it a CM10 thing? TIA!

So, I flashed the Google Official ROM, and still the problem persists. Going to fully unroot and see if it fixes itself.

ouch

Could I please get some opinions? This is getting very annoying. It only seems to happen in apps, because I can access the app drawer and docked apps fine. I flashed the stock ROM, and un-rooted but the problem is still here. Any help?

Go into developer options. There should be an option for Pointer Location. Turn that on, and scribble all over the area you're having touch problems with. See if it is even registering your touches.

while in that same area.. another option is z-device test. go to screen and menu key to perform sensitivity tests and such. if you dont have a menu key in the navbar... it will not work.

Okay, thanks for the tips guys. This is really weird. There's like, a barrier where I can't touch at the bottom of the screen. I took some screenshots to show you guys.

Any help would be appreciated, I'm really hoping this isn't a hardware problem.
For the record, I've flashed back to the stock image, unrooted, and locked my bootloader. The problem persists. Thanks!

Are you using any kind of screen protector? Just that I had some weird touch problems in the past which disappeared when I switched screen protector.

Looks like a hardware problem :/

I figured this out and it's pretty weird. The height of the deadzone is exactly the same as the height of the nav. bar. Anyone got any ideas? Or has LG f***ed me over?

It would seem to be a software issue, where the launcher believes you are touching the nav bar so ignores input, that'd be my guess.
Try a different launcher maybe?

Another weird discovery. It seems that if I swipe over the dead-zone fast enough, it registers. That leads me to believe that it's a software problem, but after flashing stock ROM, un-rooting, and relocking I don't see how it could be. This is weird.

Trouble with green line appearing on screen

Anyone got this super irritating problem where u try to touch the screen to activate a button or swipe, but only a green line appears and what u want is not done?
Input was set to TP, but trying to hit the buttons to switch between text and numeric (the top bar) results in it.
Not sure why.....anybody have any idea?

I assume you're using Swype?
If so, you should really be asking those guys the question. It looks like a bug with their software.

Nope....swype has been banished from the phone. Unless it leave remnants behind?
Besides, it isn't active, how can it cause such a problem?
It doesn't just happen at the keyboard area....it happens all over the phone/screen. Even in the Sense interface until a reset makes it go away. It comes back randomly, pretty rare, but it's still irritating.

Okay - I just assumed that because you mentioned swiping and I don't recognise the keyboard.
So you're saying that you can sometimes draw green lines over the Sense UI with your finger? If so, it's definitely a piece of software you've installed, as that's never been seen before and I'm pretty sure it would have been picked up by now.
What did you install last before this started happening? And how often does it happen?
No problem.
I guess as much, but I can't really figure out what is the problematic app. Swype would be my guess, but it has already been uninstalled.
It actually came up a few weeks ago, that was when Swype was still present. But after a reset it went away. Now I have uninstalled Swype and replaced with TP4, and it came back right during a MSN conversation.... You can imagine my frustration in having a conversation when I couldn't swipe and press buttons properly.
Just trying my luck to see if anyone has encountered similar problems.
Finally found someone with the same problem..anyone else?

Trying to find out the culprit app/cab so that it can be gone FOREVER.
OK...it definitely has something to do with the handwriting input. Appeared after a hard reset with no apps/cabs installed.
Hard to replicate, soft reset will make it go away until it decides to rear it's head again. Very infrequently I might add....another point to chalk up to HD2's list of bugs again.

Samsung Galaxy S trick:Change brightness with a simple swype!!!

Yes it works!
You can change the brightness from the home screen without change any option or install any application.
Press on the notification bar (not open it) and after shows up with the date, just swype left or right to adjust the brightness!!!
Here is my video on youtube to see how it works:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFABj8LvD3g
Welcome to 2010 lol. (sorry!).
I think the correct way to do it is just to hold an area on the notification bar (not swype). left is less bright, right is more bright. (at least on latest fws it works like this).
This has been known since éclair. You must have auto brightness off for it to work though.
Thanks for sharing anyway, original thread has probably been lost in the folds. I'm sure there are plenty of new sgs users on here all the time. It is still one of the best smartphones on the market today, and now it's dirt cheap.

Nexus 7 Auto Rotation stopped responding

Not sure what's happened, but the Auto Rotate functionality on my Nexus 7 doesn't seem to be responding anymore?
I have Nova Launcher Prime installed, auto rotate enabled everywhere I can find. It had been working perfectly, and I'm not really sure why nothing is rotating.
It seems to be getting stuck in whatever view it's currently in. I started up Transformers to see if the screen would rotate, it did because it was forced to, but then I quit the movie and my Nexus was stuck in landscape mode.
The only way I can seem to get it back to portrait mode it by making it go to sleep and then unlocking it. I've already powered it off and on to see if that would make a difference, but no luck yet.
I've owned Android devices for 2+ years now, and I've never seen this happen before... Ideas?

Sorry for the smudged screen, but here's another picture doing an accelerometer test, and the little ball was stuck at the top
Did you try default launcher? If not try that.
Another suggestion is uninstalling Nova Launcher Prime, and reinstalling.
His problem is happening everywhere, not just the homescreen, so messing with the launcher won't fix it.
Nick: This thread might help (seems like it might or might not work).

Btw, you probably don't need to turn on the flash when taking pictures of your screen. Turning it off would probably result in clearer pictures.
Mine had the problem from the start and various things I try sort it out temporarily but don't fix it.
You're problem could be reversed if it was ok to start with, something might have knocked the gyro off somehow?
Might be worth backing up and doing a factory reset?
Thanks for the suggestions everyone, but it doesn't seem to have solved the issue...
I tried uninstalling and re-installing Nova Launcher - No change
I tried to calibrate using that Compass app - No change
I then tried to do a factory reset - No change
My baseline app for testing ATM is Hyper Jump, and the little dude just goes flying off constantly to the right, and I have absolutely no control of him

Try reimaging with stock 4.1?
Hi,
I was having the same problem. I first tried the compass app and went through the calibration and it was the same. I then did a complete erase. Still the same. I was resigned to sending it back, but was reluctant too as I'd bought it in an airport in the UK and I'm sure it would've taken some time and there would be some hoops to jump through. I then went into Youtube and started to rotate the device around quite aggressively and found if it was upsound down and I shook it, it changed to landscape / portrait. I then tried the compass app again, went through the calibration and hey presto - it worked!!!!!!:laugh: Don't know if the compass app fixed it or if shaking it agressively did the trick.
It now changes seemlessly from portrait to landscape and vice versa. If you're used to an iPad or iPhone you might have to wait a fraction of a second longer for it to work.

Hi..
Or problem is here? code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=58349

Center zone of the touchscreen is dead to finger. MOST WEIRD WORKAROUND EVER.

I have a new Galaxy Note 4 instantly updated to Lollipop 5.0.1 and the very center zone of the screen is literally dead to finger touch, the right edge of the screen is dead too I have some register: (I did reboot, soft reset and hard reset already, didnt work)

Now comes the weirdest thing ever (or maybe its common, I am not expert), but when I place a finger in the edge of the phone (not even the screen edge, just over the metallic edge, like just grabing the phone with one hand), the center zone of the touchscreen works fine and the problem is solved, but the right edge is still with problems, and it is not solved with this strange "finger in the edge" workaround, look :
(If I place other finger in the screen instead of the metallic edge, it solves the problem too)

Did the upgrade to Marshmallow a couple of weeks ago on my Optus SM-910G (build number MMB29M.N910GDTU1DPF4), and ever since the whole bottom of the screen was nearly useless, requiring multiple presses to get keys registered, Swype was useless, stock keyboard pretty useless, but with the s-pen, it was perfect. When I opened an s-note action memo and zig zagged from top to bottom of screen (by finger) without taking my finger off the screen, I found two dead areas, 1/3 down top left where it didn't really harm much, and a big big zone on the bottom about 10mm high and nearly the whole bottom section where it required multiple swipes across to get some of the area "drawn" on. I tried a factory reset with no improvement at all (except battery life LOL).
Just found this TSP tip today on another forum, gave it a shot, and yay, screen perfect again! Thanks XDA (the tip ending up on androidcentral in an S6 thread where my googling about Note 4 touch screen problems took me for some reason).

Navbar area unresponsive. Help?

So I just purchased a Nexus 4 that was SUPPOSEDLY in mint condition off of eBay. I knew something was wrong because it was only 20$. And I was right.
The device's navbar is dead. The whole spot where it's supposed to be doesn't respond to touch. Rotated or immersive, it just won't do a thing when touched. I have crDroid running on it, and no kernels flashed yet. I tried disabling the navbar all together and it's still not responding on that one area.
Question is: how can I fix this? I ordered a replacement digitizer in case I gotta fix it myself if it comes to that but I really don't want to open this up. Anything I can flash or something?

You have the same problem as on one of my N4.
Start by reading the thread:
Navigation buttons with an inactive touch pad at the bottom of the screen
The second method is described in brief in these posts #60 and #77
The third method is to increase the size of the display in the settings.
You can use all three methods at the same time.
You must experiment yourself.
I wrote a lot about it in this forum. Look for.
Good luck.
P.S.
Change the title of your thread because it is misleading.

I have not read about it spreading.
This is a common disadvantage, not just in Nexus.
I have the same in the second N4 and HTC Sensation, but in the center of the screen.
I bought cheap for tests.
Now I sit down to my favorite Planescape Torment, which is now more than twice as cheap in the store, so I bought it.

Would you say a Nexus in this condition is still DD worthy? Because I am a bit worried that it will spread soon, as I'm going to get service on it soon. The guy on eBay isn't answering either so I knew that it was final there and then. Also, what ROMs would you recommend and kernels for a device like this?
