[Q] Hidden Google Play Apps - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know why my Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus hide the Google Play Apps (Books, Magazines, Movies)?
Both are running stock android, unrooted and everything but those apps are hidden even if I instal the apk it asks if i want to replace the app, says install complete, but nothing shows on the app drawer, or the widgets menu. At first I thought that it was because I'm outside the US but they aren't hidden on the nexus 7s on display in the store, so no I have no idea why that is, any suggestions?

It depends on your country
Music, Movies and books are restricted based on your country (draconian copyright laws). Only US gets all of them by default. If you are rooted, it would be easy to spoof your location to US using MarketEnabler app. That would bring some of these back.

Thanks, that's what I thought just wanted to make sure because the ones on display do have them, good thing there are alternative apps on the play store.

[Q] newbie Android App store: what happens when you change devices?

Hi,
All I've done so far is install free apps. What happens if I buy an app and install it on my current tablet, but then at some point sell the tablet for a newer tablet? Can I re-install the already-paid-for app if I use the original google account used to purchase it?
There doesn't seem to be a function to download the apps and save them as an install file, so you can back it up.
If anyone's had any experience with Amazon App store, how do they handle this? For Amazon, you're using your Amazon account, so it doesn't matter what google ID is used on the Android right?
If I have two tablets, is it possible to paid for program and install it on both tablets? Either with google app store or amazon's app store?

Answer to both is yes, at least for the Android Market anyway - I've never used Amazon's app store.

If you have rooted your TF you can install Titanium Backup and use this to backup any apps already installed, including their data.

Android Apps from the Market are all handled by the users email account and not per device. As long as you link your new device to your gmail (or other) account then it should sync with that device (I think).
Had no dealings with Amazon Market so I cant comment on that sorry.
Mark.
Android Market: Just log in with your Google credentials and you can redownload the apps.
Amazon: Same thing. You'll just have to verify its device one time via email or something.
I use Android Market & Amazon App store on both my my Nexus S & TF101. No problems.
But yes, I totally agree with Titanium Backup. It'll make things easier! Especially with game saves.
I run my family's fleet of android devices and can confirm that you can install Purchased Apps from the Android Market on as many devices as you want at once as long as the MAIN Google account is the same. I havent been able to test yet but it appears that Honeycomb now allows multiple accounts inside of the Android Market and I would assume that you could then install purchased apps from a secondary Google account now as well.
As for the Amazon Market, you can install Purchased Apps on as many devices as you'd like as long as the same account info is used. I use the Amazon Market to install purchased apps on all of the devices I manage because it allows me to do so without having to give access to my contacts, emails, and other items that a Google Account would sync.

Google Play Services Outside US

Well it look like whenever I go outside US (Mexico) Play Books, Play Movies, and Google Wallet will vanish from my homescreen and will not be available just like the Play Store services(but I already expected that) but if I go with a file manager they are still there but somewhat Google disables them...how can I restore them I really want to see my bought movies...I already tried using a VPN to make them available but only the Google Play Store services will return and install them manually doesn't work either...Please help

1. Root -> a lot easier
2. Use VPN -> try DroidVPN
3. Use Titanium Backup -> defrost those apps (or use patched Wallet, for example)
U can use orbot too in the play store. I use that to get apps to work over here in germany

[Q] Getting Google Wallet in Canada without modded apk

Is it possible to get Google Wallet without the modded apk and by only disabling permissions on the original apk and using MarketEnabler?
I don't think so, but what's stopping you from trying?

If those system apps are on your device you should be able to access them by unfreezing them with titanium backup. Once unfrozen they will be visible, unfortunately with the latest updates Google wallet no longer works for me. (Still had $1.67 left on it too )

Are you using it? How is it? Is it working fine?
If you could disable all location services and connect to US VPN at all time, then google wallet should work... just need to wipe network location and play store data...

Doesn't MarketEnabler spoof that you are in the us? I enabled it and it still says not supported...
Given that Google has stopped giving out prepaid credit and AFAIK you can only add US credit and debit cards I'm not sure how useful this will be.
If I'm mistaken let me know.

Ok so I defrosted all locked Google apps like books and wallet. All of them are useless as they're empty and none of those services work abroad. The free books seem preloaded tho. I'll set up a US proxy and clear the data later, see how it goes. Google wallet wouldn't even open without updating bwt so I sideloaded the newest version but as expected, it simply opens and says it's not available in my country.
Well through a proxy I was able to access all the content from the play store I didn't have access to before. But Google wallet still says instantly that it's not enabled for my device or carrier. But I really don't need it so I'm not going to bother changing my locale, spoofing my carrier and running a proxy. I'll probably go ahead and freeze all those apps again except for books.
If anyone else feels inclined to pursue this, feel free.
Btw there's a guide here

I hope there will be a way to make this work or manually patching it and knowing what you are patching...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801324
U still use the patched apk...
Anyone can check the coding if the apk is safe on xda?
possible to change permissions in order to have the same result as the patched one?
bump
No need to use a modified apk..
Edit the build.prop. Google it.
Will the next nexus have a longer screen?
If I edit the build.prop, will it change all the app selections in the app store?

[Q] where are the stock apps (play books, play magazine, play movies)

I recently purchased a nexus 10 32gb variant and after booting it for the first time and setting it up i noticed that 3 stock apps are missing namely the play books, play magazine and play movies, i know this because i watched a lot of unboxing videos on youtube and they all got those apps out of the box, i also noticed that all the unboxing videos on youtube, after setting up their n10 the home screen widgets shows my library but mine is just an analog clock widget and i also notices lags and frame drops when im swiping between the pages of the home screen, is it normal to have this kind of unit?
Apps can be frozen. Use Titanium Backup to unfrozen (but it requires root).
You dont need TB to unfreeze them, just go to "Settings>Apps>All" and click the apps you need to unfreeze and click Enable.
Sounds used?

Are you in the US? Maybe those apps are disabled for tablets shipped outside the US where the services aren't available.

Im from the Philippines and i also have a nexus 7 and those missing aps are available on my nexus 7, i tried to reset it to factory settings and it still has those missing apps
I'm almost one hundred percent sure it's because you've shipped it abroad. Since Jellybean 4.1 Android performs some sort of region check and disables apps that aren't available in your country. This check is performed at every startup. I have a Nexus 7 and 10 where the Play Magazines, Play Music, and Google Wallet apps are disabled because I'm in Japan. As some other posters have stated these can be unfrozen using TitaniumBackup.
Interestingly enough though my Magazines, Music, and Wallet apps no longer disable. Maybe ever since the 4.2 Jellybean update Google only performs the check once? If that's the case try unfreezing those apps and restarting and report back letting us know if they stay unfrozen!

Bypass market app restrictions?

I purchased an app off the market to use on my phone. Does anyone know a way to install a paid app on the nexus player running lolirock?
My phone isn't rooted so I can't pull the apk from my phone.... =/
Of course you can, use APK Share from KN Inc (Play Store).

Oh wow, that's awesome! I didn't realize I could get an apk of a purchased app without root.
Thanks brandogg!
Just trying to do my part. I have Google Drive on my ADT-1, I just use "share" on the KN app and it's available within a few seconds or so. Bear in mind there will still be a handful of apps that don't work.
Also, you're probably already aware of this, but in your web browser (even on Chrome on the Nexus Player or ADT-1) you can go to play.google.com/store and search for apps then choose which device to send it to from there. There are quite a few apps that are completely compatible with the Android TV devices, they just don't show up in the Play Store app (probably because they don't have all the appropriate icon packs, etc). Saves a little bit of time that way.
