SIM Cards - Your Ideas Needed - Hardware Hacking General

Hi guys, I am a tech blogger. I want to write an article about Free SIM Cards. I need ideas. Any interesting facts that you know or topical material related to free SIMs that you can share would be great.
I'm not sure if SIM cards are free in the US but over here in the UK they are totally free across all UK networks - even though they cost the networks £6 each to manufacture. Check it out - here is one example of a free SIM card offering on Vodafone – the same network who own 45% Verizon over in the states.
Anyway the point is that everyone blogs about how SIM cards are great for the environment because you can just change your network/contract not your phone thus creating less waste. I have read loads of posts about how SIM cards can save you money with SIM only contracts all the rest. But I want something different. What else interesting is there to say about SIM cards, I mean what is the most interesting thing you know about SIMs?

Is it possible to buy a SIM card in Korea?

Okay, call me a newb or whatever, but I cannot find this information. I was with T-Mobile using my MDA, and everything worked fine. Now, I have moved to Uijeongbu, Korea and I can't seem to locate a place that sells SIM cards for my MDA. All the retailers i have contacted sell phones that do not use SIM cards (possibly CDMA?) I saw a link somewhere (possibly on this site) that had a list of worldwide carriers and a map of their service types. Can anyone recommend a carrier in Korea where I can get service and a SIM for my MDA? Thanks!

I don't believe that you will find one.
This is because the Koreans use CDMA and not GSM/GPRS - completely incompatible systems.
My Korean colleagues are somewhat jealous of my XDA Mini S because there is nothing similar available in Korea or that works on their CDMA network, although there are a few basic PDA phones appearing on the market.
What you can do (and it does not help you) is rent a phone at Incheon Airport that accepts the GSM SIM card and allows you to keep you mobile phone number on a Korean CDMA phone.
well, what u could do is purchase a CDMA phone (yes i know thats not what ur asking) but just match the frequencys up.. maybe some sprint or alltel phones will work.. UT starcom's xv6700 maybe.. its the cloest thing to a mda in CDMA format i do believe.
or.. u could do as parbrook said :| those damn koreans!
oh wait.. verizon sells a world phone that accepts GSM/CDMA.. maybe look into that.
That is what I thought after some more research. That sucks. The whole point of the MDA/Wizard is to converge devices. Dammit. Now i'll have to carry two phones.

Can I get a Japanese SIM card to work with my Hermes?

I have tried searching the forums but could not find anything on how I could get a Japanese SIM card to use with my Hermes to minimise (ridiculous) Vodafone roaming costs, particularly for data, while I am in Japan on business. If I am not currently a resident in Japan, what are my options? I may be able to use my client's business address here if being a resident is a requirement for a contract, but I am also interested in prepaid options. I am prepared to go into various Softbank, au and Docomo shops if necessary, but I was hoping that I could tap into the collective wisdom of the forum to give me some pointers.

These days as a foreigner you will have to prove residency in Japan to get a post-paid contract. Either by showing a Japanese driving license, a foreigner registration card, a combination of health insurance card and utility bill, etc. The only way for you to get a post-paid contract if you don't live here is to have someone else get the contract in their (or their business's) name.
Pre-paid is relatively easy. You don't have to prove that you live here (though you do have to show something with your name on it, like a passport), but I don't know if they have pre-paid SIM cards or if they only have SIM-less prepaid phones. I think that Softbank is the only carrier left who still does prepaid.

[Q] T8282 + Prepaid?

Hello All,
Just recently came across a T8282 for sale, At a local thrift store of all places (lol).
Aside from some screen scratches (I assume these did not come with a factory protector/layer I can just peel off?) and missing the stylus + SIM card, But It works perfectly.
Anyway,
This is my first "Real" cell phone or "Modern" I guess you would say.
I've always used Prepaid service and Phones provided by the Prepaid Carrier, As has my family.
We all use Virgin Mobile, And I already have an established account with funds on it for them.
Also, They just added a very reasonable monthly Data Package Plan that seems to be the best deal around in prepaid.
Would there be any possible way to use Virgin Mobile Service with my new T8282?
I'm aware Virgin does not ussualy use SIM cards (or at all) in there phones, But, I've seen some Virgin Sim cards up for sale on auctions sites that appear to be available from outside the US.
Would I be able to make one of these "Foreign" SIM Cards work properly inside the US?
And if not~
What is a good Prepaid Service Provider that uses SIM cards I could switch over to?
I'm aware prepaid is not really the way to go with a phone like this, But I'm not really a hardcore user, And Non-Contract has always got me through just fine.
Sorry if this is in the wrong area.
Oh, And does this phone come already unlocked? Or will I need to do that also?
Bad news I'm afraid
The T8282 is a European GSM/UMTS handset and as such won't work on Virgin Mobile in the US (which uses the Sprint CDMA network)
You'll need to switch to a US carrier which uses GSM - AT&T and T-Mobile are the two big networks which do. In addition, you'll only get voice and GPRS data as the phone can't use the 3G frequences used in the US (the T8285 was the version with US bands)
Virgin Mobile is a global brand, but each country runs its network seperatly. You won't be able to pick up a SIM card and expect it to work on the US Virgin network.
As ther T8282 wasn't sold officially in the US, it will already have been unlocked if it has been used with a US network.
There's other people here which have used a T8282 in the US, it's worth searching the forums.
*Facedesk*
Thanks for all the info handsomedog.
I kinda figured Virgin wouldnt work out, But had to ask.
I dont mind switching Carriers as long as its a prepaid service, But did not count on the phone not being able to "Fully" function... That really sucks.

4G NFC Sim card or existing 4G SIM card

Just got my shipping confirmation email from Verizon, they are also shipping a 4G NFC sim card (even though I didn't selected in my order).
Currently I am using the 4G sim card (got with Gnex) in my GS3.
When I receive Note 3 - which sim card should I use, can I use my old 4G sim card in NOTE 3 or do I have to activate the new sim?
I have unlimited data and upgrading (ordered during the "glitch"), does sim card has any effect on the data plan (don't want to loose my unlmtd data)?
Are any of you also receiving 4G NFC sim card with Note 3?
Thanks for any useful information about this.
i think they send out a new sim card because the Note 3 requires a micro sim. i could be wrong, but that is my understanding.

I am curious too as my order says this
"Gemalto 4G NFC SIM Card "
So the sim card has nfc capabilities? I thought it was built into the battery?
i *think* i already have an NFC sim card but I am mot 100%
how exactly do you tell ?
Isn't NFC part of the battery? The specs show the battery has the NFC chip in it.
this is all i can find

So it sounds like Verizon is issuing SIM cards with NFC on them in anticipation of ISIS. I wonder how the NFC on the SIM card and the built-in NFC on the battery will interact with each other?
They work fine together

I was able to order an ISIS SIM for my Note II and the NFC payment process and the NFC transfer process both worked fine.

The NFC in the battery is just the antenna, where as the NFC in the sim has nothing to do with that.

Yeah, now I see that the NFC element on the SIM only contains data, such as for ISIS.
So if there is any difference in the SIM cards, the question for those of us activating on an alternate line, then swapping our main (unlimited data attached) SIM cards the question is:
After that process is finished, can we walk into Verizon and say "hey, can I get one of those new fancy SIM cards with NFC? "
Lol, lord knows if its better I want it :good:

Yes, you can do exactly that. I did that on my g'nex to try and use ISIS...never worked, but the sales rep had no issue upgrading the SIM. No charge and no threat to unlimited data.
Just to clarify, by the way: the SIM cards do not make a phone NFC-enabled by default. You can't suddenly start tapping if you plug an "NFC-Enabled" SIM into an older phone like a Droid Razr or equivalent. They simply provide another place for credit card info or other secure information to be stored, called a Secure Element. I'm fairly sure that ISIS is the only service that uses the SIM-based SE, as Google Wallet uses the SE that comes integrated in the battery on most other phones (yes, there's a little bit of flash memory in the battery). The reason for the use of the SIM card is because it's 100% carrier owned and controlled--if anyone recalls, that was the excuse used to keep Google Wallet off the play store: the carriers wanted access to the SE, but the SE was on the phone, which they didn't necessarily own. So now they get the SE in something that they *do* actually own, and nobody's any happier for it.
Hurray for bureaucracy.
Verizon sends out a new SIM for all orders regardless of what kinda SIM you have in your current device. When you go online to activate (which is how i suggest you do it) you will use the new SIM.
Why would they offer then? ^
But i think its time for a new sim for me anyways. Had this one for 3 years haha

Need help, Can anybody tell me which model of Sprint Sim does 306sh use?

Hi guys, I just bought used sprint 306sh and trying to use it with Ringplus, but the phone came without sim card. As I know Sprint has hundreds different sim cards for different phones, just try to buy the correct one and avoid losing money, can anybody tell me that which model of sim card is using on your 306sh?
Thanks a lot.
been on Sprint and Tello with this sim
Hey, i've had the Aquos on Sprint and now Tello with
the same sim card, a GLW406R, but it seems the price
any MVNO offers on its sims to work with their service
may be lower than you can buy it for ....?
I went thru activation, this sim worked on both, no problems.
(USA)
Have official sprint sim
Uses a "nano" sized sim if thats what you mean. I still have the actual card so if you need a serial number or something let me know.
