Application Data Space Low

I keep getting this notification. I have installed a bunch of apps and have over 3 gigs of internal memory free.

Go through all of your apps and look for one with 99mb of cache... Then clear that cache.
First apps that I would look are email apps.

I don't have any left with that much. The most is gmail with 61, then flash with 12. Can't clear cache in gmail.

This happens when your /data/data partition gets full. The partition is only 150 Megs. This requires you to monitor program caches and data storage. It sucks but until a work around is found it's something that has to be dealt with. I found that stored text messages are a huge data hog. What's more, the Barnes and Noble ebook reader has a 10 Meg file it stores in the data/data partition. Removing these alleviated my issue for the time being. Best thing is to be selective about what you install. I mean really, do I NEED three GPS speedometers?

Thanks. I thought it might be something like that. I'll dump some stored texts and see if I still have the B&N reader installed.

This issue is a real nuisance. I'm glad a thread was opened about this because Smabbage had a great explanation. An explanation I haven't seen at that level of detail.

Since the /data/data partition is so relatively small, I just wish more app developers would store their applications data on the SD card by default. Some of the newer apps do.

Dumping all my old texts seems to have done the trick. Thanks for the tip Smabbage!

oops- the data space message is back. I do have a lot of apps. I tried uninstalling a couple of the largest but no go. I installed cachemate but when it runs it says there is no cache to delete!
Is there a way for me to manually inspect the data space to see what is hogging it?

I used Root Explorer and bounced in and out of all the directories in the /data/data folder until I found the main culprits. For me, Barnes and Noble Nook app, Pandora Cache, Double Twist Cache, Amazon Kindle, just to name a few. Your mileage may vary.

I really wish this is something either htc or google would address... Its pathetic to have a phone with so much space in it and have to delete my text messages periodically to send a new one. So what if I have useless apps, I recall buying a phone advertised as having 8 gigs internal storage, and 1 gig onboard memory. Come on HTC, get on the ball and fix this low space issue...

From what i understand this is not a device issue that HTC has control over but rather a software issue. I too was excited to get 8GB on the phone and hoping to not have a need for an SD card. When the Incredible came out, almost nothing had support for accessing internal storage, now there are some.
I just got this message for the first time last week. Deleting some 1000 sms made the message stop.

Heh. We need a partition manager for rooted phones. Then we can allocate more space for the /data/data folder and Bob's your uncle, no more worries. Of course, it hinges on whether it's even possible.

One culprit for me was Swype Installer which after clearing data cleared up about 3-4 MB of space on data/data. I think it might've been from an install that didn't complete properly so it cached the program. After uninstalling and reinstalling Swype, Swype Installer now only shows 28KB for data (instead of 3-4 MB).

So, I was getting this error message for a couple weeks now - but (like everyone else), my phone showed I had PLENTY of memory! It did't get annoying until things stopped working in the past couple days:
- updates wouldn't download
- new downloads wouldn't download
- Google Talk stopped working completely
- gmail wouldn't update my inbox or download new emails
- screen touch response was getting more flaky
among other things.
So, I tried all of the things mentioned here and on other similar threads to no avail. The problem didn't get any better in spite of my best efforts.
I went into my Application manager prefs and viewed them by size instead of A-Z. One of the larger ones was Flash, which I downloaded and update for not too long ago. On a whim, I decided to uninstall it and reboot (again). Guess what...
Problem is gone.
No more error message. All of the problems I had above are gone. Everything is working as it should - except for Flash of course.
I'm curious to see if others that are having similar problems would try this (deleting Flash) and seeing if you have the same results. I would like to know if it's really Flash causing the problem, or simply the deletion of one of the larger apps that's fixing it. Because if it's Flash, that's a big deal.

ALL my music keeps disappearing!

This happened to me a lot with my MT3G, and I was very upset when it continued to happen on my G2. Since getting Winamp when it came out it hasn't done it to me for a while, but now it's doing it again. I can see the media on my SD card but when I goto music player or winamp nothing shows up.

You SD card has to be mounted in order for your music to be seen. I see you have your usb attached, setting to disk drive will unmount your SD, hence your music is gone, and will magically reappear when you go to charge only or disconnect your usb.

The USB was definitely not the issue, that was just so I could DDMS screencap it. The only thing that seems to get it is removing all the stuff from card to PC, then reformatting it and load it back. It used to do this to me like once a week.

reloading my entire SD card fixed it. I am quite upset this issue came back. I duno what even causes it. The gallery was messed up too but not as bad.
Now I have a gallery that has hundreds of the exact same picture, which is the last picture I took in my camera gallery. WTF is up with that?
This shows the 894 Gallery that didn't exist this morning, is the same picture that I took last *Fondue Pot lol*
And it scrolls through this for several finger swipes... And when ya scroll through fast and it shows the date it is dates from June 2008-Present. So I am nervous to delete it

I think your SD Card is bad -- can you put it in a card reader attached to a PC and run error checking (right click on its drive icon then Properties then Error checking)
ALso, is this by any chance the same card you had in your previous phone?

Doesn't give me any errors otherwise. It's the 8GB that came with my G2, I had a 2GB and a 4GB in my MT3G

Media/Audio/Music I think it is. It got relocated there once while trying to fix this problem in the past

That is definately weird. When the problem happens again, open up the development settings app and do a media scanner search. It should pop up again. I can see you're using CM, I've never ever had a problem like that, but have you tried any other roms? Also, I keep my music in a forder titled "My Music" on the root of my SD card. Maybe you could try that?

Ah yes, I've read about that media search before but haven't done that in forever so I forgot all about that. I shall try that if this happens again *hopefully doesn't* lol
I've also been planning on cleaning up my SD card a lot, and while I'm at it I'll relocate music. It used to just be on Root:/Music

One thing that made me replace my SD card and drove me CRAZY, is the fact that I wasn't aware I had a .nomedia file in my camera folder.
When such a file exist in a folder, ALL content will not be shown in ANY media browser...
It started when I used some crappy picture browser that had the option to show/hide certain folders in gallery. I played around with it a while, tossed the app but I didn't know the app simply adds or removes these .nomedia files to the folders.
Maybe you can check if you have such a .nomedia in the folders where your music seems to "dissapear" ?
Secondly, about the duplicate pictures etc, try deleting the thumbnail cache.
You can also download an app from market called SDRescan, that forces to scan the SD card for new content.

I've recently gotten around to messing with .nomedia files, they do come in handy when ya want them lol. I definitly don't have one in that folder though because fully cloning the whole thing and replacing it on the SD gets it working again.
Do you mean just delete all the thumbs.db off my SD?

I would clear the contents of the .thumbnails directory in your DCIM or whatever folder you have for your camera images.
Next run SDRescan, and open gallery again. It might take a while re-indexing the contents but it should regenerate the thumbnails.

When I do the rescan , it finds it again but after a few hours it's lost again :'(
Any one got a solution?

i also use SDrescan and i only had 2 times since a rough start that my ringtone is switched to default.
PS: its a great app never had any trouble anymore that DoubleTwist did'nt find my music

Similar issue here with the music. Been going on for weeks. The worst part is I'll be listening to podcasts and once they disappear, it also loses where I had last paused. So gd annoying.

forget the rescan.
1 mount the sdcard in a reader, or via your phone to your computer.
2 copy the entire card to a directory on your pc.
3 format the card, after you verify there is a good copy of your stuff on the pc/mac
this next part can kill your phone and or card's contents if you point it at the wrong mount point. careful !
4 in a terminal, do this: $ dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc1 bs=1M count=9000 (only do this to the exact hardware mount point of your sdcard, make sure by mounting and unmounting it once or twice)
if it finishes, or when you get tired of waiting, format the card again either in your mac or your phone. copy the contents THAT YOU KNOW ARE GOOD FILES back onto the card.

can't upload files in dropbox

guys, does someone have problems with dropbox upload?
i can't make this work properly... it always starts to upload, but stops at 32kb (or 4kbs when using titanium media sync).
weird thing is i can download just fine.

Same issue here on stock 1.72. 32Kb gets sent and no more.
I don't know a fix but it's not just you, if that helps.

it's that simple...
several apps has "share" button, and when you have dropbox installed it is a option in menu, if i choose that option it starts sending but stops in 32kb.... as a matter of fact, i need to uninstall the app to get it back normal, cause it staying sending "ad eternum" even after a reboot...
the app "titanium media sync" that supposed to sync with dropbox, can't work to, same problem but it stops at 4kb (basicaly, it creates a couple folders in dropbox and stops)...
i was thinking that it is cm7 releated, but now that japester36 said he get same problem with stock, i don't have a clue
i'm using cm7, last nightly, and with everything off, i tried via wi-fi (home and work) and 3g network too, my carrier is that above my name, it's a brazilian one, really big here, but unknown in the rest of the world! =oP

I'm with T-Mobile in the UK and my phone is unbranded and not rooted. My ISP is BT with Infinity.
Right, I have tried a file over WiFi, less than 32Kb, that doesn't upload either. Dropbox reports 0 of 1 Files Successfully Uploaded". When I turn off WiFi then the same Dropbox upload is now successful!
I've now tried a 293Kb file over 3G and it does upload. Switch back to WiFi and no go.
Guess I need to look into my router (Draytek) or try it at another WiFi access point.
Does Dropbox on Android need specific access through my firewall to the Internet? I'm not overly locked down.

Don't think it needs any specific firewall permissions, it's always just worked for me. However, while I don't have the "freeze at 32kb" issue I do seem to have acquired an occasional issue when uploading (over WiFi) where the progress bar fills completely but then reports "0 of 1 files successfully uploaded". Tried the same file again later (still on WiFi) and it worked fine. My failed upload has been retrying all day (on 3G) and the same thing happens, until I clear failed uploads in the Dropbox app.
I know that's no help to you at all, but it does seem like there are intermittent issues. I'm on CM7 RC4, never had any issues with it before reading this thread last night.

I keep getting unkown errorin downloading... On my galaxy tab... does anyone know how to get it to work?

I'm thinking it's buggy on a lot of devices right now. On my Atrix, files disappear constantly, then [email protected] 1 gig of videos it kills me. Filed reports with DropBox, but haven't heard back a solution...just they are aware of the problem. I think it's a dropbox issue, not your firewall settings...

Can people please list what app they are using to send (share) to dropbox and what type of file. Also their isp.
So far every app and every file type has uploaded ok.
Also, are you having issues downloading? Again, no problems for me.
If you can provide these details we can look for any pattern.

Well, the response from Dropbox was that the Android app isn't yet a fully usable version as is the desktop. You can't put files directly into folders, like with a file explorer. Having 3rd party applications save files directly to your dropbox folder also will not work. As of now the only way to use dropbox is through the app itself. You need to manually add the files to the dropbox app for it to recognize them. It will not recognize them if you just move them to the folder in any other fashion.
I know for me this sort of makes it pointless. It is quicker to just email whatever files I want on my computer, or just transfer them over wifi or USB. Compared to constantly opening up the app, checking the status of the files, uploading them, never being sure what's synced or not.

Thanks for that information. With the above I managed to figure out how to upload a simple 50K image!
Needless to say the app is totally unusable for me at the moment in time, which is a disappointment. I know loads of people who have upload issues, which begs the question as to why it has such a high rating in the Google Market

Can't move apps to sd card

Card is mounted and everything, but still everything wants to be moved to 'media area'. How can I change this?

Are you sure they are suppose to go to the ext?
On my apps2sd pro it prompts me to move to "media area".
My TiBU screen here show internal, sd, ext sd..? Can someone explain this for us?

Afaik the sd speed booter increases the cache size, thats what mine does. Increasing cache size will load thumbnails of pics and vids faster, but not necessarily boost the performance of a game or something..
As far as fragmentation, ive never thought of that, im sure there is a defrag app. Ill look tomorrow im sleepy.

Yes but we are confused if "media area" is stored on "internal sd" or "external sd". I believe the apps in media area are on internal sd. The op is asking can they be stored on the external sd.?

Media area is the internal phone storage not ext sd card.

Get more space on 8GB Nexus 7?

I got my Nexus 7, just rooted it and thinking of free up some space. Which apps can I remove without damaging the system? Can I remove these without any trouble:
Calendar (i will use Jorte)
Currents
Earth
Email
Gallery ( i will use quickpic)
Google+
Latitude
Local
Messenger
Play Music(will use my own musicplayer)
Talk
Voice Search
Youtube(will use www.youtube.com)
How can I remove them the securest way?

You can remove most of those. But the safest way to find out is to rename them by adding .bak at the end then reboot. Check for ill side effects and if none, then you can truly delete them. I would keep downloads and a few others I saw you print. Anything that can be installed from market can be removed.

Removing apps is always a decent option to free up space. Just be careful. I would also recommend investing in an otg cable. Using thumbdrives or external self powered hard drives is a great option. Putting my 1Tb drive to work with it soon.

Before removing anything, you should do a nandroid backup. Then move that to a safe place off the device.
That way, if you mess something up, you can get it back.
OTG works great for storage, you just can't use it for app installation and usage. Photos and videos work well from it though you have to deal with something sticking out of your device.
You might also consider one of the WiFi devices (like Kingston Wi-Drive) which will give you similar to OTG without having something plugged in all the time.

I would strongly suggest against removing downloads.
A great place that I always free app space from is /system/media. You can always generally safely remove ringtones, pictures, wallpapers, live wallpaper app and wallpapers if you're not using them...
Make sure that you're not locally caching google play music songs if you are using play - your stuff won't be available offline, but it also won't take up space.

This us the very reason why I always buy more than I think I need as far as disk space goes. I know Google and Asus were aiming to keep the N7 at a minimum cost but 8gb is useless for a device of this type. In actuality you're only getting a little more than 5gb.

You might want to see how much space you actually save before going through the trouble. I suspect that most of these apps are a few mb at most.

You can safely remove all of the listed apps using Titanium Backup. But I do believe that Latitude and Local are part of the Google Maps app and that will have to go if you want the two gone.

If you go to settings / storage you can peek around and see what's taking up most space.
Also android assistant can help you mass cleanup your caches - use with care.
Like above posters said everything on Google play can be smoothly uninstalled or reinstalled if you please.

removing system apps wont free up any space in your storage/app partition. itll free up space in the system partition which wont help you with what you want. theres already lots of space in the system partition. just to let you know.
