When I went to Carphone Warehouse to see a Nexus in person I WISH I listened to the guy.
He said LG are know for poor build quality - they get a lot of complaints and returns. He liked the Nexus but didn't think it will be smooth going being a LG phone and said I should wait....
He was right...
My nexus has loose buttons (power button has become loose with use), The side creaks/snaps as if something wasn't put together correctly.
The Sound quality from the mics on videos IS APPALLING !
Rear speaker is tinny, wosre than any phone I have heard TBH.
The camera could be better
The Battery is crap (if you use the features you are supposed to use like Google Now, Location etc)
The WiFi reception pickup is worse than any device I have owned.
The ear-peace has processor noise on it- especially bad when you take a call.
I really don't know what to make of the phone. It has its advantages too but in fairness its just not the golden ticket it was made out to be.

My FFC has dust in it....so many hardware issues.

What are the screen issues? I'm planning on buying this since I don't live in US i would ship it in my country but it looks like I need a warranty for this device maybe a used galaxy s3 better to buy then?

yellow blobs when you play a game for few minutes (after phone heats up)
screen is generally yellow, this (4th) device is nearly white, previous ones I had to calibrate screen like 225/230/255, my latest is about 255/238/255

Trust me I didnt ask for faulty devices, and yes if they would offer me a job none of them would pass if it wasnt perfect.
My 4th device is nearly OK, but there is some creaking and that rubbery frame in some places hase a little "give",
Any device that has any creaking, screen problems, loose parts etc shouldnt go throu QC

My £30 2 year old Xbox 360 controller doesnt squeak. Its a brand new £400 device, not used or refurb, there should be no build quality issues. And try using most used buttons on the device when wvery single time you can hear and feel it being not right. Previous device didnt have it so why should I accept that one?
Look at iPhone or Lumia, from build quality view these are perfect devices, and fault ratio is a lot lower than e.g Nexus4.
I had GNexus (3 of them) one had screen issues, second was clicking like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxGhlnRCneY
after couple of days.... is this acceptable in your opinion?

Screen freeze when trying to unlock.
For example: Screen is off, wants to unlock phone, turn screen on with power button, screen is on, but doesnt respond to any touch (cant swipe to unlock).
Turn screen off, then turn it back on, now touch is not frozen and unlock is possible.

What batch is it from?

What batch does your current nexus 4 is from? I heard there is some kind of batch the first released ones and the second one is after the sold out?

This will propably software issue. ashirviskas overtook me.

I have an issue with a rattling sound coming from the top of the device, it sounds like something is loose or disconnected on the inside. Maybe the headphone jack? Or the earpiece speaker? I wasn't looking for anything wrong with the device, its just that I noticed it when I put my phone down on the table. It sounded broke in some way. I kinda looked at it funny and said to myself, "That isn't right?". So I picked it up and tapped on the phone (lightly) and definatly noticed there is something loose on the inside. Is this a reason for a return. I have had phone for 10 days and this my first time noticing this. I have not dropped, put down hard or, anything of that manner to the phone.

For those that came in here that haven't purchased a N4 yet, let me tell you there are many people, like myself and my wife, who received phones without any of the issues listed above.
People with issues are louder than those of us without, so while it may look like the N4 is riddled with issues...it is not as bad as it sounds in this thread.
We both have 16Gb versions, one ordered in the first batch, and one in the 2nd.
- Neither screen has yellowing of any sorts, even after playing games or watching movies for a period of time.
- Neither has creaks, squeaks, or rattles
- Neither has soft or loose buttons
- Neither has poor speakers (back or ear)
- Neither has had freezing issues on the OS or apps
- Neither has had the screen flicker
- Neither gets abnormally hot during use
- USB and 3.5mm headphone connectors are solid
- Battery lasts all day with typical use (for instance, yesterday while waiting for the Hobbit to start, I was streaming music and browsing the web for just over an hour. During that time the battery dropped 8%. To me, that's pretty damn good) (and yes, I have Google Now turned on, with the unwanted services turned off)
all that said...I'd expect my experience is pretty normal, where as those posing issues were the unlucky ones. Don't let these reviews scare you out of buying a really great device.

So does the 16 gb is enought to you? Do you think it is enough if I plan on installing like only 3 Graphic intense games then 2 to 3 HD movie length videos, productivity apps like a reader for ms word, powerpoint, camera apps, video player and such (but i think those apps does not consume much space?) then a lot of picture but would occasionally (like every 3 months) store them on PC?

my back speaker pops something serious at random times when all the way up but dear god this screen is beautiful

Rattling sound + i dont believe volume buttons will live long .....but haters gonna hate... Still best phone ever had

What to check on a 2nd hand Nexus S

Hey guys, I'm about to buy a 2nd hand Nexus S from some guy on a local forum and we're going to do the exchange in person. What should I check on the phone before I give him the $$? Any common glitches common to this phone?
For example, I was using the Nexus One before this one, and I know the multitouch screen is wonky for some of the AMOLED models for that one, and the trackball gets dirt in it. Anything like that for the NS? Thanks guys!

I would say one of the most important things would to make sure the volume rocker and the power button feel solid. This is the most heard of problem in the nexus s forums. We haven't really experienced problems like burn in but you can check for that by running a full screen app like a game at max brightness.
Good point, the volume rocker on my N1 was starting to act up with age too.

Speak for yourself on that one. The buttons at the bottom got burned into mine from having the display stay on while charging.
burn on screen dont matter if u can see buttons at bottom for search back home ect as there used alot and are off the main screen and volume and power buttons even tho mine are still like new after 2 years if they have gone than there may be more problems elsewhere always play music and volume brightest to see if anything wrong with screen and sound i would play a game
Make sure the signal works. That would be a sign of a stolen phone. Apart from that its the usual of checking scratches, any big dents, making sure the buttons are working ok
My screen is still as nice as when I bought it, but the entire thing is covered in ghost armor. Hate the glossy fat bezel and though. Even cased it shows tiny less shiny scuffs on it though its never been dropped or in anything but silicone and tpu. 99% of people wouldn't even be able to see it, but I'm anal. I went through 8 phones to find a good screen and no glass crease. Foolish when I ended up getting a galaxy nexus just 13 months after paying full price for it from best buy. Buttons all work too after 4+ hours a day of use.

Make sure to check for touch sensitivity across the middle and bottom of the screen. I bought a second hand nexus s and didn't recognize the problem until it was too late.
The middle of the screen on my nexus s pretty much doesn't work sometime and starts working after I turn the screen off then on again.
Hope this helps.

1: buttons work
2: call *2 or whatever the cellular company's number is (Sprint will happily verify an ESN if you are buying used)
3: screen
4: is it rooted? (I would rather root myself, so I know it is done right, If I buy used, I buy stock)
5: GPS Signal
Verify SIM connector pins are important too.
Closed, thread here talking about the same issue.
In future search before posting.
Thank you.

Things to check when my google nexus 7 arrives to make sure everything is fine in it?

Hya,
I'm new on here , so please be easy on me with my question  . I recently purchased Google nexus 7 tablet from some local website who asks the customers to report any defect with in one day, only then they will ship new product :crying: , So I'll get one day for checking . Since Google hasn't launched Google nexus 7 tablet here (India) officially, so I'm getting the imported one, website support peoples even ain't aware of how to get warranty if product gets turned in to black box .
I saw some q/a here and I found many peoples having problem with product (related hardware ones) . I'd be thankful if you guys could list some basic things to check pertaining to hardware of product to make sure everything is fine
Hi, I'm on my 5th replacement and everyone had a different fault!
First you want to check round the edge of the screen to make sure the glass is flush with the case and not raised up so you can push it down with your finger, If anywhere the problem is normally down the left side. (DON'T TRY TO REPAIR IT YOURSELF WITH THE SCREW FIX TUTORIALS!) In most cases the fix is just temporary and the problem returns. This is a defect!
The next thing you want to do is check for dead pixels & white light bleed out around the edge of the screen. This app is perfect for the job.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.ujacha.deadpixel
Next you want to check the speakers by cranking them up to 100% and play several video or audio files to check for crackling/distortion/popping.
It's well known that the speakers are very cheap but they should still be crystal clear with the volume at it's highest.
Now you want to check the touch screens response. There is an issue with the screen not responding after heavy processing/game play where the screen becomes unresponsive down one half of the screen and only locking/unlocking the screen solves the problem.
First I would advise hammering the N7 with a game that is Tegra 3 supported for example Dead Trigger or Shadow Gun to get it nice and hot if at any time the screen becomes unresponsive then you have the same issue.
To double check run this app, you should quite easily be able to detect all ten fingers on the screen at all times.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.the511plus.MultiTouchTester
The last thing I would check is the connectivity through Wi-Fi & Bluetooth, this is the least common fault as far as I know. Just check you have nice strong signals with no drop outs.
So after all that if you have managed to put a tick in all the boxes I reckon you have a sweet device!
I hope this helps you and any one else out there and that you have more luck than I had finally getting a perfect working N7.

Great question (although I don't know if it's a dupe). Thanks for all the info mr_tris. That sucks you're having so many issues. I haven't noticed anything wrong with mine since I got it yesterday, but I'll check all the things you mentioned when I have the tablet in front of me.
Billy
@mr_tris jeez!! 5 replacement means something and very horrible so to speak . I really appreciate help and advises you posted. I'll make sure to check them out .
The only problem I'll have if found any problem in device is that I'll have to wait another 20 days since the new product will be imported by website peoples for me to make replacement
One other thing to check: the gyro.
Does the screen rotate normally or do you have to turn the device so the screen is practically vertical (assuming you choose to unlock rotation via the notification panel).
If you are into gaming, try a driving game or something to make sure the cars don't veer left or right.
I had this trouble on my second one and have read of quite a few other people having the same problem.
The only real issue I've heard about is the screen raising above the bevel some. Yea this is a defect as the screws are too long and pushes the screen out. Returning it 50 times isn't going to fix it. Only by chance may you get one where the screw is slightly smaller (1mm). The solution is to make a little washer out of some plastic and put it under the screw. It doesn't need much to fix it. The cover pops off just like a regular battery cover and the screws are right there. If it is a problem for you, why NOT try to spend 2 min and just fix it yourself?
You wouldn't even notice unless someone pointed it out. You literally have to turn the N7 and look across the screen to even notice it. Hardly anything to freak out about.
Some people have blown their speakers already too. Most have been after a long session of movie watching or music. I suggest to not blow your speakers out (using at Max volume for extended periods) right out of the box. Let the speakers break in first. Honestly the speakers are so loud anyway that I normally have it at 50% volume Max. Probably not an issue either but its good usage practice.
I've also heard of one or two screens fritzing out with lines and fades. Probably nothing to concern yourself with.
I haven't heard of anything else but I guess it would always be best to check it out thoroughly.
I do recommend unlocking first thing because it wipes all data including storage and saves. I'm using EOS rom and its heavenly. Trinity kernel is also awesome because he tweaks the colors of the screen to pop more.

Most important things are:
Screen - check viewing angles and color reproduction in the dark. Best reference is to use a site like GSMARENA for high res photos and screen reviews.
Body - Look for cracks or scratches, especially around ports and the headphone jack.
Things to disregard:
Slow system - this is just something you will have to deal with in an android environment.
Warm after prolonged use - again, normal.

I wish I could have that attitude about my electronic devices. It would be a shame for someone to find a defect after the 15 day return grace period just because their device might be OK and they never bothered checking it. You must have spare money to burn. :what:

No I don't have money to burn lol but I just don't think its worth the stress of over examining for defects. If you look hard enough you will see that something isn't 100% straight or a tiny spec of plastic is sticking out or whatever and then it will stand out like a sore thumb once you've noticed it lol. Give it a glance over and if it looks good to you then enjoy your tablet.

Nexus 7 3G Defects - here!

Hello people!
As we all know the nexus 7 32gb 3G has shipped!, This is for everyone who has the Nexus 7 -3G- version only!
Do you have an issue with anything of your nexus 7 components (screen issues - build issues - speaker, etc ...) that are found on the previous builds of the nexus 7 non 3G ?
Did you guys find something that you like or you feel is better than the one with the previous build or non 3G (if you own a non 3G nexus)
like say, Faster, snppier, better graphics, performance etc ..
Sorry for my not so bad English
Just had 2 3Gs arrive to replace my old 16Gb wifis
Both perfect in every way, (Saying that so were my wifis)
Only comment is (Are google trying to get apple to sue them over the sim removal tool!!!)

Oh the reason Google are stating that Cases for the wifi nexus 7 are not compatible with the 3G version is that the Mic has moved due to the microsim slot so the flap on the cases covers trhe mic on the 3G version.

This seems a little pessimistic to me. Why assume they are going to have tons of defects? Won't google/asus have learned from the mistakes they made with the early wifis?
I didn't mean to be pessimistic at all .. just scared of that feeling when you wait so badly for that shiny device that you ever wanted but only to figure out that you have to sooooo lucky to get a (well-made) one without any defect !! I hate QC.
i see the need for this very much,
i just got the 32gb wifi only and maaaann.... the feel to the tab is just...different like the back panel feels...better i cant really explain it the unit feels heavier too.
Got mine this-morning. No defects at all. Why would you expect any? The Wifi version has been out for ages so any major defects would have been caught long ago by the early adopters.
The only "defect" per-se is deciding what the best deal on a SIM card is... 3 is probably the best network... but what one to order? All rather confusing for a poor old mouse brain.

I got mine last night. It has some backlight bleeding and also has these funky faded streaks (hard to explain) on a black screen these streaks give the blacks a washed out appearance. I compared it to my 16GB N7 which I got in Aug and I didn't notice these streaks but do have backlight bleeding on that one. I'm actually getting it replaced for these streaks but I've come to expect and even accept(as long as it's not horrible) backlight bleeding on Asus tablets. Having owned the TF101 (3 of them) the TF201(3 of them) and the infinity I have not came across a single one that didn't have some backlight bleeding to an extent or another. Some having it much worse while others maybe having just a small spot in the corner. But I honestly have not seen a single one (mine or a friend's) that didn't have backlight bleeding to some extent.
Mine has some very slight backlight bleeding, but nothing I'd complain about. Unfortunately, it does have the blown speaker issue...so an RMA replacement is on its way.
I bought a 2nd Nexus 7 3G version and all the issue of my 16gb WiFi are gone... The main problem the light flickering which is gone totally, also the screen is now flat with the bezel finally.
Sent from my Nexus 7 3G
Mine is fine overall. There seems to be some slight backlight bleeding on the left side of the screen, but not major enough to RMA.
Speaker sounds fine too as far as I can tell. The only "issue" I think I can report is that when my tablet has been sleeping for a long time, the mobile data will cut itself back on if it's off. At least the mobile data works though. Anyone else experience this?

I forgot to mention that I have noticed my screen flickering a bit when in 'auto', and depending on the ambient light. It's almost like the screen can't decide where to set itself and is bouncing between 'levels'. The problem seems to go away completely when I just turn off the auto lighting and keep it at minumum (which is how I usually use it). Is this the screen flickering problem everyone keeps talking about?

Just got my replacement an hour ago. Body creaks less, bezel appears slightly more even (although the old one was really even to begin with), and speaker sounds MUCH better. Only slight buzzing from the 'notification' volume bar, default tone, at max. Everything else sounds clear. I'll have to watch the screen to see about flicker. I have noticed it switching levels, but haven't noticed it flicker yet. It also appears to have less light bleeding. So far so good...
Ok guys - I need an opinion. I've had some time to play with my replacement N7, and noticed some odd things. I ran the battery down last night just to make sure it wasn't a dud - got about 10hrs of video (minimum brightness, sound down). It's not as good as my first one, but I don't consider it a dud. However, after it died, I plugged it in. A half hour later, I tried to power it on to collect the batter logs (simple battery logger), and it wouldn't power on. I pressed the power button for 5 sec each time, nothing. No white battery charging logo either...just unresponsive. I kept trying and it finally booted. I think I had to hold the button for 10-15 sec - and the battery was charging and at 10%. Never happened like that with my old one - just a consistent 4 second press to power on. Does this thing need 10% before it will power on? Reading the forums, the power on issue seems to be common. Should I be worried about this? Should I just keep my original unit even though the speakers are bad? I really don't want to end up in the endless replacement loop. Do others here have occasional power up glitches?

[Q] Squeaky noise near speaker corner?

Greetings!
So I received my phone from my carrier last monday after it's second time at the repair shop (first time I had lockscreen problems, headprint was changed. When I got it back the r-tards had forgotten to remove the piece of paper that is over the front camera under the glass, they scratched my phone and shizzle so I sent it in again) - and I am trying to figure out if they put it together in a weird way (once again)...
Near the corner of the speakers (I think it's the frame) I get a squeaking noise whenever I unlock my phone (I use bricked kernel sweep2wake so I put a bit of pressure on that corner). Even though it's not all the time, and it's not a very loud noise, it makes the phone feel cheap (as if it is coming apart) so if nobody else is having this issue I'll turn it in again ...
I really love my Nexus, but oh god I've had so many problems with it
Well u love the nexus brand, and ur forgetting that google gave it to LG this time, so this is expected from an amature company. To sell u boards designed for their flagships and not for nexus.
This phone just have looks and nothing else.

I really think it's a nice phone, it's my carrier that assembled it in a bay way when I RMA'd it
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium HD app
I made a little video to show off the noise, is this just my carrier that put it together poorly (again) or is this an issue?
Stream it here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/uhwpl401bgvkdkm/2013-02-04 17.45.32.mp4
My Nexus 4 had squeaky buttons at first, but I ignored it, and kept using the phone normal as usual. And believe it or not the squeaks are gone. I didn't even attempt to fix it!
It's not my buttons that are making the noise, it's the frame (right about where the screw is) close to the speaker

The nexus 4 has the worst build quality I've ever seen

I don't care what anyone says. The nexus 4 is a really cheaply made device. But what can you expect from a device with good specs at that pricepoint? Answer: a lot more than what I got, that's for sure. Anyways I have a huge list of defects on mine, so I hope I can cover all of them here
Screen banding: greys look quite poor and inconsistent, almost like the ribbon cable is damaged. Similar to this issue is that after turning the device off for a few minutes then turning it back on the sides of the screen, especially the right side, look way brighter than they should. Almost like backlight bleed, which I have as well
creaking: An issue mostly for the nexus 7 that somehow arrived on my nexus 4 as well. My nexus 4 for the longest time creaked like you wouldn't believe. You know when you pick up an old SNES controller and twist it a bit and it creaks? Yeah, like that, except it was every time I touched near the power button. I tried to fix it, but I only caused 2 other areas to creak and only partially fixed the first one
multi touch issues: Another issue thought to be exclusive to the nexus 7 but was transferred over to my 4. I first noticed it when I was fooling around with an ocarina app on my phone and I couldn't cover all the holes, so I downloaded a multitouch app and noticed a problem. When I have 4 fingers touching the screen, one of a few things happens. It either only registers 2 or 3 touches, or if I move my finger it will move the finger that I have parallel to it the opposite direction that I moved my finger. And if I have them all in a line it just goes f*cking nuts, sometimes having one finger, sometimes having 4 but not in a straight line, sometimes 2, etc. It was even worse than my nexus 7.
I could go on and on about how there's a dead pixel somewhere on the screen, or how there's sometimes a green spot in the middle of my camera, but let's stop there. You may be wondering why I haven't returned it yet. Well that's because the glass on the back completely shattered, like spiderwebs everywhere. But I didn't drop it, nor did I put the hot phone on a cold table, in fact, I just squeezed the side a bit. I took off the cover to fix the creaking issue, since I figured out how to fix it, and I wasn't pushing that hard, I've put far more stress on it just from taking it off, and I hear a loud "pop" and my hand is covered in glass, and there's really bad crackage on the back. I also put a tiny crack in it earlier from letting it slide off of my pants TWO INCHES OFF THE GROUND. *heavy breathing* I've never had such poor experiences with devices in my entire life. It's even worse than my experience with my nexus 7, which had similar issues, like the creaking, and the backlight bleeding, and the multitouch issues, and my nexus 7 had at least 40 stuck pixels on it that weren't fixed when I got a new screen. I don't think I'm ever going to buy a Nexus product ever again. I don't care if it's stock android, or if the performance is good, or if it's easy to root, or whatever. What's the most important part of a device? Being able to f*cking use it. And I can't use any of the devices I've owned because they've all been defective! My galaxy nexus had HUGE scratches on it just from it being in my bag, and stopped charging even after replacing the USB port, my first nexus 7's battery didn't work, my second nexus 7's screen had at least 40 stuck pixels, the oleophobic layer started to come off and it creaked a bit, and after getting it RMA'ed most of the pixels were still there and it creaked like a SOAB, and my nexus 4, I've already explained in depth. So now whenever I hear "oh, the nexus 4's build quality is comparable to the iPhone 5" or "the nexus 7 is soo much better built than samsung tablets" I just chuckle and say "yeah, I believe you"
What do you expect it sells for 299$only

Sounds like more of an issue of how you take care of your devices rather than the device itself.
I have every device you listed and they look brand new while never using a case.

Why is this in the Q/A section? And who cares?

I took superb care of it, the vast majority of issues I have with it were there when I got it, and sorry put it in the wrong thread.
My phone is in really good condition. I bought it on launch date and I have not had a replacement get. I really don't know what you are talking about.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Well that was a poorly-formatted paragraph, and after sifting through it for your complaints, I can tell you that half of those issues can be "fixed" with kernel adjustments. I put 'fixed' in quotation marks because they aren't really fixes, more like tweaks.
As for the rest of your complaints, it seems like you don't take very good care of your phone. My Nexus 4 is in mint condition and I don't use a case or screen protector. If it's not in my hand, it's in my pocket. I don't set it on tables or anywhere, really. Treat that phone like the high-end piece of electronics that it is instead of the way you treat your car keys.
Also: prepare for this thread to be closed.
Idk man it sounds a lot like ur just complaining .. I've had a lot of devices so little stuff doesn't get me anymore but you could've gotten unlucky too but honestly I've had my phone since November and I just haven't tried to hear it creak . .I'm sure it does but I could care less you might have OCD though if ur noticing all that small stuff you might wanna get that checked out.
And the other stuff sounds like u did it ur self cause that first crack is always the hardest after that ur screens pretty much shattered honestly

I don't have any issues with build quality mime is great!! Flash a kernel to make the colors great!! If you don't really can't what people tell you about the build quality what post this when you know people are going to reply.

You're judging the build quality of a device sold globally based solely on one defective unit that you happened to receive? That's simply not logical. I for one have a device with no issues and I consistently throw my phone onto my bed (easy 2-3 feet down) and absolutely nothing has happened to it. I can get a creak but only if I press the back of the phone with amounts of force that would never come up in a normal usage scenario. You're hugely exaggerating here, and while I understand your frustration there's really no point complaining about bad luck.
You don't care what anyone says and nobody cares what you say. Let's call it even and move on.

Well I'm glad to know that other people are having better luck. And I already said I take superb care of it. I don't throw it around, or whatever. I treat it really well. I'm just really frustrated that I always have such bad luck with things like this. I'm just gonna remove this thread as it's not doing anything productive, nor is it necessarily an accurate opinion.

Yeah I apologize this thread really shouldn't exist. I just got a bit angry and didn't know where else to put my anger into. The nexus 4 is really a fantastic device, just not MY nexus 4. Besides I'm getting a new back which will fix the creaking issue and cracked back issue which are the two issues that bother me the most. The rest of the issues are fairly minor (except maybe multi touch, but who knows, that could be the back as well, maybe it's a software bug) and I can live with them. I've already calibrated the display so the banding and bleeding issues are a bit less pronounced.
I tested this multitouch thing:
I can place all my 10 fingers on the screen and it will recognize them. But put 4 on it and place them in a line: every "touch" will be gone ..now move one finger (while 4 are on the screen): 1 finger is recognized.
Yes, very strange.
I too have slight creaks on the screws and a bit on the power button. And a lot of small scratches on the back since it just lays on the glass :/
How often does someone need to use their screen like a retard unless u have no fingers
I really shouldn't be complaining too much because it could be much worse. And it only cost 350 dollars.
I don't care what op says. My n4 is the best phone I ever had. And mine build quality is iphone like. I had to rma my first one due to some problem. But rma process is too easy smooth and fast not like iphone.

At least you realised and admitted this rather than doing what some people do and arguing fruitlessly. If you want this thread to be deleted or closed report the OP for 'maintenance' and ask for it to be closed, or PM a mod.
