4.2.1 Multiple Users + Root - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

1. Is it possible
2. Do all users get root access? I assume SU would have to be installed for each user, if root access is desired, correct?
3. Does it cause issues?
4. Does the ADB Backup & Restore backup and restore ALL users?
....Anything I'm missing?

In the words of Chainfire, author of SuperSU, as it pertains to SuperSU 0.98 and 0.99:
Chainfire said:
Preliminary update for Android 4.2's multi-user capabilities.
Only the main user can run the UI and gain root access.
Secondary user's apps will not be granted root, nor can
those users change SuperSU configuration.
This is all temporary. Proper multi-user support is being
worked on.
Note that if a non-user process (like ADB shell) needs to
prompt for root, that prompt will always appear on the
MAIN user's screen !

I should have mentioned that my N7 is rooted with multiple users and I have not run in to any issues. I can't comment on the backup, however.

I have not had any issues with root for main "owner" user. But as stated other users currently do not have root access.
Backup? Don't know yet?
Other users currently do not have access to all apps that the owner has access to. Example. Google wallet only works with owner. Google Talk only with Owner.
So I really hope that once they figure out how to get root to all users... than all users can use all apps.
Google has made a one stop forward.... but long ways to go on multi user system. IMO

Completely agree on that one. Asked me to set up google wallet again for the second user (I had entered a different gmail id for the second user).
Had to install titanium backup separately for both the users. And apps installed for one user was not accessible to the other!! (from within titanium backup.)
However as the owner, I could see all the apps from under 'manage apps'. (Not visible from the normal drawer.) From manage apps, I can also see option to 'un-install for all users'.
As a owner, I wish, I could also install apps and control other user..

I have rooted my Nexus 7 in order to be able to use USB storage. It works fine-- I use "USB MassStrorage Watcher OTG" and can access my external 32GB Stick.
However, I added a second user (my Wife) and although I have use appshare to share all applications, I cannot read the USB stick when under her user name because it requires a rooted device and a second user system sees a non-rooted device.
The problem lies that Android N7 4.2.1 - does not have a facility to have a shared directory - so everything is hidden from one user to another: I had a plan that I could share books via the USB Stick and not waste the directories and memory space - but because the second user cannot access the USB stick it does not work like I planned.
Does anyone have a solution to:
1. Extend Root access to a second user
2. Create a shared directory that both (or multi) users can access?
3. Have USB access app that does not require root?
I am a first time Android user and the restrictions placed on the use of this device (Android in general) are pretty ridiculous - they make no sense!
Why do they (Google) want to cripple their own device? If the USB access is possible from hardware standpoint - why the intentionally block it and not make it part of the OS?
Why not allow shared directories ? I still copy from one user to another using computer - but it is convoluted and time/memory waste.
Hope there are good solutions out there that someone could direct me to.
Best regards
Vladimir

I tried Superuser 3.3 on my Nexus 7 but didn't work at least with cerberus. It just denies the root request

apologies for reviving a thread.
But I managed to get the multiple user working with SuperSU but not superuser (on 4.3)
The problem I have is for some reason every time I install SuperSU although it works fine, It stops App Ops (Permissions) from working.
and because I really like to use them (instead of a third party permission tool) I'd like to get superuser.
Any ideas?

Undeletable file

Hello anyone,
after powering up the device for the first time and doing all the first time stuff I did the mistake of happily downloading the advertised Ice Age film (for free in Germany). Later on I tested all kinds of things. For example I created an additional user which I deleted again. Now I need the Space the *#@% Video is sitting on. But the $?#@%¿ File won't let me delete itself. Here's what I tried so far:
- deleting the file in Google Play Movies
- deleting the file with ES file explorer in /sdcard/Android/Data/com.google.android.videos/files/Movies/...
- clearing the cache of the Google Video thing in the nexus 10 settings
- clearing the cache of the Google Video thing with Titanium Backup
- deactivating the App and repeating all the abovementioned steps
- uninstalling update of Google Play Movies and repeating all the abovementioned steps
- trying to change permissions of the files with ES file explorer and others to no avail
- I even tried to rm -r the file via adb shell (with and without su) under different paths (see above and another including shell)
- and most of all: I did not only search for a solution but actually pleaded Google and the XDA search and the lot but to no avail
- By the way - I would very much prefer not to wipe the Tablet
Does any of you pros have an Idea?
Edit1: Of course I tried several different ways of changing the properties of the file (-rw-rw-r--) to 666 or something but it won't let me

Have you tried to unpin it from the Google movies app? I had a few magazines that I unpinned yesterday and it appeared to delete them afterwards. I assume the other app works the same way.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk HD
I would root the device then use a su manager that supports multi-users and grab a file manager that utilizes root. Try to delete the file then. Don't know why a file would be protected unless another app is trying to access it maybe?
That's exactly what I suspect. I've pinned - downloaded - the movie before I added and deleted the additional User. Therefore somehow the main user got to be a different one albeit it seems to be the same. And this different user isn't allowed to delete the movie. And I don't know how to restore the original 'main' user without wiping the device. If I unpin the Video in the App the App claims to delete the Video but it isn't. As a SU manager I have Chainfires SuperSU. The only other I know of is ChainsDDs Superuser Elite. And this doesn't seem to have multi user support either. Please correct me if I'm wrong or if there's more SU managers. For root utilizing file managers I have said ES file explorer, Solid Explorer and even tried Root Explorer.
Do you by any chance know of a way to restore the original main user?

The implementation of multple users is annoying and I stopped using it.
Superuser 3.3 supports multiple users for root. Might give that a shot. From Craigacgomez post:
http://d-h.st/oOo
But at this point it might just be easier for a clean install of you current Rom or at least a good excuse to try out another Rom.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
You're right of course. A fresh install is probably the best solution. Actually I'm starting to prepare for it. But it nags on me. Setting up everything from scratch (not sure whether TB will install the apps correctly with this multi-user thing) and as always forgetting something to backup and therefore loosing it.
But most of all - as long as I don't understand why this happened in the first place I don't know what will be best: Completely ignore the multi-user capabilities and hope for the best never to need it or as an initial step setting up a user and deleting it to be sure not to loose control over data owned by a 'first main user'.
Thank you for the 3.3 Superuser. I suspect I'm just too stupid but I didn't get it to run properly. In SuperSU I did a clean up for another SU manager and installed the Superuser.apk. Then tried to let it install the binaries without success. Hitting the 'Tap here to check...' just didn't do anything. It just said the binary was SuperSU 0.99. So I installed Superuser from Play and tried to get rid of SuperSU and then again installing Version 3.3 - didn't help. I even copied the binary myself which at least made Superuser see a 3.3 binary. Sadly it didn't really work with any app.
So far as a summary: If you plan to make use of the multi-user-functionality just don't do anything before setting up some users.

[Q] Will this idea work?

Hello,
I apologize if I am using the wrong terminology.
My company is looking at buying around 100 nexus 10's.
Utilizing the Google Nexus 10 Toolkit that someone here was nice enough to make, I have unlocked the bootloader, rooted, etc.
I then install anttek app manager and use it to freeze all the unnecessary applications my company doesn't want. (which is pretty much everything, except Zenprise, Junos Pulse and Citrix Receiver)
Now that I have the single tablet ready to go, I use my toolbox app, and create a NANDROID backup.
Which I am them hoping I can copy the backup onto a couple different PC's and then assemblyline unlocking the bootloader, installing custom recovery and then restoring the other 99 tablets using this backup I created. Rather than having to go through and freezing all the apps on each tablet
Does this seem like it will work, or is the most efficient way? I'm having problems where I get an error that google play services failed to open upon each boot up that I'm trying to resolve. Would this be considered a ROM? Can I name it? :silly:
Yeah, it should definitely work, I'd just relock the bootloaders on the other devices.
You could also script the freezing of all the packages, I believe the command is "pm disable".
I'm not sure, but it's possible you'll wind up cloning device ID numbers with NANDROID backup.

This sounds like it could very well be possible, you may want to factory reset etc. the first device to try to smooth out the issues before using the backup on any other devices though. In a technical sense you could indeed call it a ROM because you've taken the stock firmware and slightly altered the default system so you could name and then distribute it around the company as your ROM

Thanks folks,
And it's went off without much of a hitch. I'll have to check to see if the device ID's are duplicating. Thinking of naming my ROM "Turning $600 sex machine into a $4 terminal.zip" v.0.4, now.

Where are the game save files located on Android?

Got a galaxy note 3 and a note 10.1 2014 edition. both are not rooted.
I would like to transfer my progress in Injustice - Gods among us from my tablet to the phone.
Been looking online and in other threads here and the only option I saw is TI backup, which is for rooted devices.
I've checked the iOS setup, and they have a save file *.bin that they can use iFunbox to extract.
Is there no save file on Android? where is it?
Thanks in advance

Basically root not needed but some people say it depends on what you're doing. Perhaps if you're to copy a root file no root is needed but if you're trying to delete maybe root is needed(even so with correct permission still no root required)
But i don't know adb so not sure.
Try Helium, but you will need Helium (carbon) for pc also. You need to connect ur phone to pc, start carbon on pc and phone to enable it for backup or restore. Copy the backup file over Will do.

Ok, tried Helium but it didn't work.
In addition I have something to say about the Samsung service as a whole.
I tried to find the Samsung android USB drivers on the Samsung website but it's impossible to get anything useful out of it.
Eventually I found the most updated drivers on these forums.
After that I contacted Samsung online chat support to receive assistance on backing up in-app data.
Turns out, there's no way to do it with anything Samsung offers (WHICH IS ABSURD).
Such a basic functionality and it's not available through any Samsung app or feature.
The only thing the support did was to comfort me regarding this issue and telling me there's no way to do it unless I use a 3rd party app, which they cannot recommend.
I have never had such ****ty service from such a big company. It started with the update and it's just going downhill ever since.
Unbelievable.
TL DNR: Helium worked perfectly for me with my Galaxy S4 and my new Galaxy S7, both of these devices are non-rooted and I used the free version of Helium. Continue reading for a walkthrough of what worked for me and will hopefully work for you.
I just got a Galaxy S7 (I upgraded from a Galaxy S4) and I wanted to keep my progress from all of my games so I wouldn't have to start from square one. All I had to do was download Helium on both of my phones and the desktop program. Then I connected my S4 to my desktop using a usb cable, opened Helium and followed the on screen instructions to backup whichever apps I chose. After that I set my S4 to connect via MTP and opened my phone on my desktop. The file path should look like this My Computer\Your_Phones_Name\Phone\carbon (carbon is the folder where Helium saves the app data that you chose to backup). Copy all the app folders you want, then follow pretty much the same steps for connecting your new device to your desktop and paste the folders from your old device in your new device's carbon folder. Once you've done that, on your new device open Helium and go to Restore And Sync, Internal Storage, select your apps to restore, and then finally enjoy your progress that you deserve!
A much much easier solution is to make use of the cloud backup feature in the game.
Just make a WBID account in-game and all your progress will be backed up. If you reinstall the game on the same device or another, just make sure you sign in with your WBID and a prompt with Superman will appear giving you the option to restore your progress.
DO NOT RESTORE USING THE CLOUD BUTTON AT THE TOP RIGHT CORNER IN THE MAIN MENU as Google Play Games cloud restore is broken in Injustice and you'll lose your progress!!!
I find this method alot easier than fiddling with system files =)

How to get adb to do that please? I'm new to this stuff. I tried adb root but it says "adbd cannot run as root in production builds" I'm using linux if that helps. Device I'm trying to extract from is non-rooted OnePlus 3T.
So in the internal storage (NOT ROOT), you first need to know the first company maker of the app & then the first name of the app (example : tiktok would be somthing.musically) because of the package name & how it updates & stuff.
Now when you go to the Android Folder, you see data, this is where (most) files are saved for progress & is usually in here where data gets wiped by settings for apps, scroll down for your app, click on it & then...
find a way to put all those files into your other device.
(this is also how some people cheat their way through games like subway surfers unless they're a bit complicated for most users lol)

Easy guide to root your tablet and keep your warranty

I must write this guide because I spent yesterday 6 hours of doing all of following steps (together with 2 useless firmware flashes and other worthless stuff). Why? Because it was really complicated for someone who is not really familiar with all the names, definitions etc. I just wanted to have my tablet rooted, keep my warranty and use my external SD card without limitations. It is not easy but it is DIFFICULT to find these few steps on XDA forum in tens of topics with many information posts and garbage around.
Important thing is that you can do these steps WITHOUT loosing any data! (Which I lost yesterday because of my lacking information.)
Here we go (written without tablet around, so some things can be generalised):
I did it on Z2 Tablet 511, firmware .402 (no need to downgrade as I did at the beginning...)
1. Open up your device’s “Settings”. Now scroll to the bottom and tap “About phone” or “About tablet”. At the “About” screen, scroll to the bottom and tap on “Build number” seven times. Make sure you tap seven times. You will then see a notice that you are now a developer.
2. Now you should have Developer options in the System settings. Go there, enable USB debugging.
3. Again in Settings go to Security options and allow installations from Uknown source.
4. Download Easy Root v5 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53448680 (guide is there also)
5. Download Backup TA v9.11 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292598 (optional for backing up your system info if you will later unlock your phone, install new ROMs etc. But if you need just root, it is not necessary. But it is recommended so you can be sure that you can get your tablet to the default status when it was bought and you can make a complaint in case something else will break down.)
6. Connect your tablet to your pc normally. Just have your tablet switched on and use USB cabel. Let it install all drivers.
7. Run Easy Root v5 (install.bat) and your tablet will be rooted in few seconds
8. For TA backup run Backup-TA.bat. Follow instructions and save your TA files. It will be created in the folder from which you run the applications. It is compressed in one file. Save it somewhere and keep it!
9. Reboot
10. If you want to use external card without limitations, install SD fix https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix
For common users who want to install apps which need root and do not want to install custom ROMs or do another tricky stuff this process is enough. Enjoy your tablet now .
There can be maybe some problems with drivers. Then you can try install PC Companion which should install everything for you. http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/tools/pc-companion/
Another thing from @stress40 who had also problems rooting the tablet:
1) I used easy root tool (on windows with Android SDK installed, ADB drivers etc)
2) extract easyroot v5 onto desktop (keeping extracted files together in a folder)
3) download towelroot.apk and put in Files folder of towelroot
4) reboot phone then plug in phone and double kick install.bat (so you get the ADB message on phone) and most importantly DON'T LET YOUR*PHONE*SCREEN*TURN*OFF (mine did so was stuck at waiting for phone but as soon as I turned it on it was fine) I was rooted in a few minutes after double clicking install.bat.
Good job, beats people having 3 tabs open trying to dissect which steps they should be following and then trying to piece together the timeline of events with other people screaming "read and search"
Sorry you lost data though, have you tried out Sony's backup app that for me was embedded in "tools" folder in app drawer? I hadn't noticed it for a while.

Not a big issue for me at this time. I just had to reinstall everything but data etc. are on cloud plus I have titanium backup just it was not used . For me tablet must be ready for summer when I will be off home. Now it's ok.
And yeah, there are like 8 topics with 49 pages in 5 subforums and then try and go through it. I don't know why there was no simple guide like this before. Only updated long ago created topics in first post plus other mess around in tens of threads.

A recovery makes it easy to 'flash' kernels, roms etc that come in zip files as well as make a nandroid backup. If you see yourself doing this, then yes install a recovery system. As a whole, it doesn't hurt to have one installed.

permission denied
Hey, thanks for a great guide!
All steps went smoothly and for the most part my Tablet Z2 now appears to be rooted.
For instance MyBackup Pro, Tasker, Secure Settings, App Quarantine all work.
However, there are some apps that have issues and they complain about permission denied in /system folder.
Apps are
BusyBox (unable to install binaries),
SuperSU (I was able to install it from Play Store, but as soon as I start it it tries to update to latest version, which fails)
AdAway (fails to apply hosts file)
Any ideas?
Your /system folder is not mounted with r/w permissions.
How do I do that?
I tried this app: Mount /system (rw / ro)
But it did not help
Is the only solution to install a custom recovery? Would be nice to avoid a full wipe if possible.

Your device is not properly rooted.
Please re-root.
All other attemps only lead to problems.
Perhaps you try the XZDualRecovery (rooting is included in the installation procedure), worked like a charm here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2794175
Ok, so you are saying that the method mentioned in the first post in this thread is not the proper way to do it?

I did two backups with adb.
"adb backup -noapps" (THen renamed the backup)
"adb backup -apk -all"
I restored both backups.
That was the only way to get some app data.
I've never tried the USB thing.
I usually have root so it's never an issue.
I don't have root on this phone and the only thing I really miss about not having root is add blocking.
I did find an add blocker that uses an on device VPN and it behaves sort of like a firewall.

Root (with Magisk) may be possible using the adb method, while not having a custom recovery. I haven't tried it, as I don't have the phone yet. I saw someone else post this link in another thread, but I can't find it now.
It's definitely not a "one click" solution or anything, so definitely read the instructions if you go this route. Whether or not it works on the Essential, I'm not sure. But it's the only possibility so far.

I don't care about root: I'm just asking about initial setup
