Several apps missing upon reboot? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Let my Nexus 4 run down to 1% charge, then turned it off to charge it. Turned it back on when it was almost fully charged and then left it on the charger for another 15 minutes or so. When I took it off and started using it, I noticed that my weather and calendar widgets were no longer on my home screens. I think that's odd, so I go to re-add them, and notice that they are not in the widget drawer. So I open up Google play, and sure enough, they are not listed as even "Installed." So I look around a bit more and notice several other apps I downloaded have somehow gone missing, including Screen Off and Lock and Audio Manager Pro.
Not a huge deal I guess, but has anybody else experienced missing apps upon reboot after phone has been off for a few hours? Mildly disturbing.
Edit: WTF just noticed Lite Flow is gone, too. That one kind of annoys me since it takes a few minutes to set up.
Edit 2: WTF that hsic wakelock bug is now also worse than it previously was. Previously it caused about a 2% wakelock for me. Since boot, it has caused a 9% wakelock. It's never been that high for me before. Gotta admit I'm increasingly disturbed.

Only time i was missing apps was after flashing a custom rom and using tb to restore apps and not all showed up like lightflow as you mentioned had to set them up again.

I'm not even bootloader unlocked or rooted, much less running a custom ROM.
Weird.

Full battery drain caused all core apps to fail, even after recharge...

Anyone have any idea what may have happened here?
I was unexpectedly away from home, but using the device quite heavily, and didn't have a method to charge the battery.
Once the battery had drained to about 3%, I switched the phone off but I ended up needing to make another call. The phone booted, but all core apps returned a force close message. Phone, Maps, Google Account, all the main stuff... Other apps would launch and function with no problem though.
Thinking it may have just been a glitch, I rebooted the phone again thinking there would still be just enough juice to allow a phone call, but while booting, the battery totally failed.
Once I had a chance to plug in the charger, all core apps continued to fail, even though the phone now had plenty of power.
Even after a battery pull, the same issues continued, rendering the phone pretty much useless. No link to Sprint, no WiFi network, nothing...
The phone is rooted with v1.5.2 RC and Fresh ROM v1.0, so lacking anything else to do, I performed a Nandroid restore from a backup made about 2 days ago and that seems to have fixed up the problem. (whew.. I did not want to resort to the RUU)
But, I just can't figure out what may have caused this odd behavior in the first place....
Are you using apps2sd?
No, I'm not using the apps2sd feature.
The lockscreen text showed "No service" and the notification bar icon showed the same. The "phone" application was the only one that would attempt to restart after being forced closed. After a second fc though, it would apparently give up.
Oh, and just remembered one other oddity.. Once booted and all force close messages removed, attempting to turn on the mobile network resulted in a hard reboot. I really didn't expect anything since there was no service link, but I was just clicking various shortcuts to see what did or didn't work.
Good part is that a Nandroid restore saved the day, so it's more of a curiosity at this point to what the root cause might have been.
I wouldn't have thought that a battery drain could have corrupted the apps or prevented the root filesystem from mounting.
You probably had too many apps installed. It's a known issue with the Hero, where having too many apps installed causes a bunch of core apps to fail to load for no apparent reason. The phone losing power just caused it to reboot, which triggers the issue.

oddly enough I've had a similar experience. it was 2 days before christmas and i was doing all my last minute shopping. heavy use of the phone caused the battery to die, so i just threw it on my car charger. it booted, but REFUSED to get any data at all (i didn't run into any fc's, however). I rebooted it 3 times and each time the issue persisted.
I was running the AOSP 2.0 build at the time, so i flashed my backup of 2.1 and everything was fine from there...

Hmm, good possibility there. Just did a count and I do have 85 apps installed.
(whoof, I had no idea the number had gotten that high. just too many useful apps for this phone.

Constant Phone/Touchwiz reboots - help if you can

Hello everyone, I've got an interesting problem that I want the experts here at XDA to help me troubleshoot. Feel free to ask questions as I know there's probably a million variables at this point with stuff installed, uninstalled, gps, root, task killers, etc.
alrighty with that said, I did the e-wrecked gps fix (changing the operation mode and server location+port). That seems to work great in terms of time to lock on my position as well as improved accuracy. Over the next couple of days I noticed some really choppy and lengthy phone start ups after the fix.
Eventually it got to (and currently is at) a point where it kept rebooting the phone, or at least touchwiz. It would load up, scan media, search for the network, do all the start up stuff, then lock up, and turn the screen off. Hitting the lock button/power button does nothing while it resets itself. Then it resets to the lock screen, the screen lights up and it goes into "searching" for the tmo network while doing the storage preparations, and other boot up stuff. It does not restart from cold (with the vibrant, tmo, and galaxy animations, only the lock screen and OS boot process)
Anyone else got any funky restarts going on, for whatever reason? I basically want to start seeing what would trigger this behavior. I started uninstalling stuff one by one trying to figure out why its doing that but sometimes it boots up fine, sometimes it boots but doesn't ever find tmo's network, and sometimes it just does the above.
Observations:
1. It will always boot up fine if the SIM card is out.
2. The last time it did it was today while I was at work, listening to music while the phone was charging. Im noticing that the phone gets pretty hot while charging and really hot if you're using while its charging (getting apps, surfing the web, playing games, etc)
So any thoughts from the tech gurus here? anyone have similar behavior in the past on other phones? is the heat affecting the sim card negatively? I can (and have) put my simcard back in my treo 680 backup phone with no issues whatsoever.
New observation, it consistently does the reset process as soon as the "Adjust Time and Date" as it registers/syncs with the network.
UPDATE: so, i did some research, ended up at the setCPU thread and saw that when set to OnDemand some people's phones experienced similar tendencies. Problem is, mine was already set to auto-detect and "Conservative". I un-checked start at boot, and tried again. Same problem. I uninstalled setCPU completely and my phone appears to be back to normal.
I'll update again if anything changes.
so one of the things that i removed during my troubleshooting was my corporate exchange account. When i added it back. it did its initial sync fine and gave me my calendar and contacts. I then rebooted and the problem came back.
I removed the account and rebooted. it went through two cycles of the restarts and on the third one, it worked. I left it alone after that.
I then was showing my friend some things (browser differences) and had 3 browsers open. It froze as i went to close Dolphin HD. Rebooted and now its back to the cycle.
Mine did this also. Installed several apps, woke up to find a slow phone. Resets galore. A quick reset to defaults and app restore fixed it, sans setcpu of course.
From XDA App on SGS-Vibrant
my phone resets itself also as described above, but not really doing anything in particular. i dont have a whole lot of apps installed. i even was using google maps the other day and after it started up the screen went black and the device was unresponsive until the screen came back and it said searching and the media scanner was running.
well first off thanks for responding lol. i thought i was by myself out here.
secondly, i found that if i leave it alone and let it go through its cycle, it does eventually boot up ok (this is recently, before, it was endless). i havent restarted my phone (im afraid to lol) since it did it on its own yesterday (showing my friend the browsers).
since yesterday, i've used it for navigation (motonav), serveral installs, downloaded podcasts, rss feeds, etc and its been ok (even while charging and wifi on). again, havent actually restarted it since yesterday because its actually functioning for once.
Lastly, i unchecked the auto update time and date from network in the settings just to see if that makes a difference because based on previous expereience that is the point where it freezes and resets. Thanks for chiming in and let me know if there's any other advice you have
I'd suggest a reset as mentioned above.
Been checking out this site for awhile but this is my first time posting, today my phone started to have this problem and it just bootloops touchwiz if i have a simcard in the phone.
It works fine without a simcard but my problem is it will not let me turn of auto update of time and date, i have tried disabling this setting and it just enables itself again. I have also noticed that if I started messing around with time and date settings even without a sim touchwiz reloads once. I guess im gonna give a reset a go.

sorry, noob question (i came from winmo and a touch pro 2), what does "a quick reset to defaults" mean? is that like a factory wipe i.e. phone will be brand new again, gotta root again and reinstall everything, change settings, etc?

Root will stick but settings and apps/app data will be gone. It briefs you on what is and isn't lost when you do a factory reset.
Smae problem, its setcpu!
SetCPU with any settings will do this.
It needs an update, the auto detect some how loses and
will set the cpu to 19mhz max and min.
This is too slow to process. I rebooted and pressed settings and uninstalled it
while I could. Seems to behave once out of touchwiz.
For me it was another app not setcpu I never used it. After i did a reset i restored all my apps with titanium backup and once i restarted my phone it looped again. So i did another restore and left off all the apps that i installed right before the problem started and so far i think for me at least one of these caused it
Google maps update
google translate
the extra language pack for translate
barnacle wifi tether
hero of sparta
these are apps that I installed right before the problem happened and without these my phone works fine I am going to see if i can find that one that caused my problem.
It's not the maps update because my phone works fine with it.
It was hero of sparta a gameloft game from there web market funny thing is its suppose to work on the vibrant while dungeon hunter which works fine would only give nexus as a check out option. Anyway im going to try to get a refund tomorrow.
I get the same touchwiz reboot but for me it has only ever happened while using google maps. I do not use set cpu, but I have applied the gps fix. It is more than a little annoying. I have done a system wipe but the problem persists.

yes, if you have setcpu, uninstall it - its buggy with the galaxys
- sometimes you can't wake your phone (if you set a screen off profile), forcing you to do a battery pull
- constant launcher restarts

and this is why i started the thread, to make sure i wasnt all alone. i have everything you have installed as well, but it was doing it before i picked up hero of sparta (and nova, and asphalt 5, man those guys make some good phone game lol).
anyways i just installed barnacle wifi tether yesterday so thats not it either (at least for me). That leaves the google stuff, out of the apps in your list, all of which were installed when i first got the problem, and are still on there after I've removed setCPU

ok so, contacts, text messages, etc stay? Meaning if i do a factory reset, root stays, and all app stuff can be taken care of by, say, AppBrain since it has a running list of everything installed and knows where to get it to install it again? I apprecicate the advice, but this would still be a last resort sort of thing. my phone has worked fine for the past few days but I also havent restarted it yet either
just a quick update, my phone still does this if i reboot my phone (which is never now that i got my 32gb sd card), but for the first time ever hero of sparta caused it to happen while the phone is on. I uninstalled it so we'll see.

strange issues with my Vibrant

running rooted stock Vibrant. Phone was doing great until yesterday.
All of a sudden It started going into a reboot loop. Did a factory reset. waited for about an hr.
Then started installing my apps. I only use a bunch of games, launcher pro and some others, nothing crazy. after about 3 hrs of playing word wise, it starts it again. This time I notice that the notification bar it takes a long time to run the media scanner. sometimes it scanned twice , then reboot over and over. I finally did a factory reset again.
Could it be Launcher pro? I havent reloaded any apps at this time, and it been 10 hrs with no reboot?
Anyone else had this sort of issues?
I've used LP since day 1 with absolutely no issues. I would have to venture a bad app?
I think it might be beautiful widgets, or fancy widgets. I think it went into a boot loop when it did a auto time and date update. I kept seeing that at the bottom of my phone before it rebooted.
dunno, will be very frustrated if I cant customize it the way I want.
Well, I've used BW from day 1 also, no issues.
Sent from my Vibrant
didnt figure it was one of those,
guess I will have to look at one app at a time.
Sorry man, if discovered, will you let me know via a PM so I can put it in the sticky as a possible problem?
are you using setcpu? i was having all sorts of problems with phone hanging and never waking and such with setcpu...i finally just did a nandroid restore and uninstalled...no issues since
not using set cpu. very wierd. hasnt happened since my last factory reset last night. installed apps, not all of them because I am in the process of seeing if I have a bad app.
just taking it slow to see if I can duplicate the problems.
only thing now is that I have a problem with disappearing icons on my launcher pro dock LOL

Phone randomly stops sleeping

My phone will randomly stop sleeping, this has happened pretty much since i've gotten it.
I will launch spare parts, running near 100%. Check partial wake lock, nope nothing. And nothing under any of the other menus in spare parts that would indicate it not sleeping. This will occur after a couple of days even after installing no apps, restarting does not fix, neither does pulling battery. It will just start happening and only way to fix is data reset / factory wipe until it happens again, but when it does start happening I might've not even be using it at the time.
Okay, i did actually finally fix it after months without factory reset, it appeared to be when 3g and Data-always enabled was ticked.

If this fixes my no sleep problem, I will name my first child after you.
I've been detailing the steps I've taken to resolve my no sleep issue on another forum, with the last action I took being a flash to factory ROM from huaweidevice.com, changing absolutely nothing on the phone for 24 hours, rebooting, and waiting another 24 hours. Without a reboot between charge/taking off charge, it would be 100% running. If I took it off charge and immediately rebooted, running would be more like 30% (ie: 'normal').
I'll give 'data-always' a go

Okay im unsure now, was all fine yesterday, woke up at 7 to alarm, lost 2% overnight. then just put it under my bed but now that i've woken up i've lost 18% because it just stopped sleeping again. I didn't do anything except turn it on check battery, and turn it off. So back to being confused again
Still having this problem, for example. It was sleeping fine when I went to bed then at some point during the night just stopped.
Running 64.6% 10h
Screen on 10ish% 45 minutes
Highest item with partial wake lock in spare parts is like 5 minutes, no other indicators.
This is happening no matter which ROM i try.
Considering a stock ROM with exactly 0 changes still has sleep issues, its clearly a firmware "thing".
For me, it happens after being taken off charge.
For e.g. Last thing before bed I check my running time, and its somewhere around 35-40%. Plug into charger. Take off in the morning, goto work etc, check my run time and its 100% even without the phone being touched.
For the moment I just downloaded one of the "root only" reboot widgets from the Market. Its just part of my morning "get ready for work" routine to hit the reboot widget and reboot my phone.
Its a bit of a PITA but until new firmware is released I cant see a way around it.

Hey don't know if you've tested it further than that. But its much appreciated, that rebooting after charging does seem to work . But just wondering, if you know... does it only do it when charging via usb (computer) or AC or does it not matter?
I have exactly the same problem.
I also noticed that reboot helps, but only for a while. If i want my phone to go to sleep mode when the screen is off, i would have to reboot it few times a day... Turning WiFi/GPS/Auto-sync on/off does not have any affect on this.

As per your suggestion via email, I tried the Malaysian firmware.... It seemed that 'running' time was down alot, but battery life was still pretty average. That was doing nothing more than installing the Malaysian firmware and entering my Google account - no root, no launcher changes, etc.
The lack of Swype was a bit of a downer too
I gave it a whirl from 6:30am to around 5:00pm and 'running' was right down in the 10% range, but battery was still down to ~45% over that time in 'pure' stock form. DAMMIT!
Ah well. It was a good thought and hopefully it worked for you I'm back on roadhound + the OTA update as of about two hours ago.
I'm going to scour the SGS forums and see if anything there can be applied to the U8800 RE: battery life improvements.

Oh yeah sorry, try using something like juice defender to disable 3g when screen is off or something. 3g radio keeps it running, but it doesn't appear to be, this will stop the battery drains.
EDIT: That does work but its not ideal, turns out the u8800 and the u8800h use the exact same radio so im not sure now, don't know if there is any possible way to figure it out.

Hey guys.
This may not really be the thing you need but I was having similar problems and running 100% on without sleeping etc and came accross another forum where this was an issue (cant remember where)and as trivial as it sounds the solution for me was to go into settings/ applications/ manage applications and running applications and go down to media storage and clear the data. I do this now and then when I have this problem and it seems to help.... Maybe worth a try? It seems to be an issue with a particular media file. I also try to reboot my phone after every charge. Note that my phone is totally stock

Thanks for advice, but unfortunately this didn't help either. For some unknown reason, my running time is again 100% although the screen is off most of the time. In Partial wake usage, Android System is in the top of the list.
Oh, Android System partial wake lock seems to be a different issue, but maybe someone can help you out. Whats happening here is running = 100% yet there is no partial wake lock held. Quite unusual

[Q] Nexus 7 screen turning itself on?

Hi all,
I'm experiencing an issue on my stock 4.1.1 Nexus 7. The screen seems to be turning itself on randomly. It normally turns off again but may toggle on/off quite a few times. Then it seems to go for a while whitout turning on. Bit odd.
Anyone else experienced this or have any thoughts on a reason for it?
Thanks
Same problem here, except with a Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
I just updated to 4.1.1 today and this is the first time I've seen it happen. Was previously on 4.02 without issues.
I have had the same problem. It seems to happen in the evening and I wondered whether the case was causing it to overheat. Seems to be OK when I take it out of the case. I phoned Google and was told that it hadn't happened before. I will contact them again if it doesn't get any better.
Sorry. Misread the post. Mine goes to sleep, not turns on

Same here but mine is not exactly stock.
I have installed Apex Launcher plus numerous apps. I thought maybe it was the launcher doing it. But at this point... I have no idea. Just noticed it tonight coming on and then going off within 1 sec. but its random. it may do it once within an hour, or it may do it up to 5 times within a min... then go several minutes completely black screen. Crazy stuff. I thought maybe it was getting a message at first but then realized I had the WiFi off on my phone so it was dead to any incoming messages/wifi. I am really curious as to what is causing it and will be following this post as well as others quite frequent. Also.... the latest app that I have downloaded was OSMOS HD. it wasn't waking then sleeping before that app... just my 2 cents.
Hi Qbensis,
By stock, I just mean not rooted and not running any custom firmware. I had various apps and the like installed.
I have actually since rooted my N7 and installed a few custom ROMs and since then have not seen the issue at all. If you want to stay stock, I assume the issue will be fixed in the next update
I have seen this a few times. Middle of the night I look over and the screen is on then off. I check the power usage overnight and I see little blips of screen on when looking at the graph. Not sure whats causing it (I figure a app).
Same Problem over here, any solutions???
I'm on stock 4.1.2 and having the same problem, not rooted. Creeped me out in the middle of the night when it goes on and off.
N7 Random Turn On
Same here on 4.2.1. I carry in front pocket all the time with screen facing leg and feel heat when it happens. Has even done it when in Power Off mode and still does it. I thought that would prevent it for sure. Very irritating and drains battery. We Winter in 55+ community and drive around in golf carts. I am starting to wonder if WiFi spots trigger it. Will continue to track behavior and search other forums. Curious that there have not been any solid suggestions or solutions.
Happens to my rooted but stock 4.2.1. It happens randomly when I recharge using a battery pack (4AA) as opposed to charging using regular AC. It's annoying as heck! I don't know how to get this fixed!
I've been getting this on both SmoothROM and raspbeanjelly, and it's very irritating.
It has to be an app that is causing this. I initially thought perhaps it was GPS Status, because I caught it in the notification bar a few times when the screen turned on.
My device definitely isn't hot when it happens.
I'm suspecting the Email app, Maps, or Facebook.
EDIT - not any of them either. I'll test Beautiful Widgets next.
Okay guys, try this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29420959&postcount=7059
I'd been suffering from this for weeks, factory reset, reinstalled and changed out ROMs, installed apps one by one over the course of several days to keep an eye on what might be triggering it etc. Nothing worked for more than 2-3 days at most, and the issue always came back in one way or another.
It was causing me to have to turn the Nexus off when not in use because it would be draining battery (15-20% overnight compared to 2-3% when the issue wasn't present).
Then I stumbled upon that guide and using Gemini I disabled Maps from auto-running, turned off Latitude, and so far so good.
If it works for you too, be sure to hit thanks on Karpfenhai's post!
I was having this same problem on my Nexus 7 running stock 4.2.2 rooted with SuperSU. Finally tracked it down to having installed BetterBatteryStats and for some reason, I had not granted it perpetual root. It was causing the device to wake and turn the display on for random times (up to 13 hours, which killed the battery), not always showing the SU request dialogue. I granted perpetual SU privilege to BetterBatteryStats and problem went away.
Try taking out the battery and clean out the USB port with a toothpick. This worked for me. All the dust that accumulates in the post can cause the phone to think it's charging.
