Looking for some help and insight. Have an Acer A500 that haven't had any issues with until recently. Was running stock ICS and one day the screen was unresponsive. Can't unlock it, or if it is unlocked can't touch on any icons, etc. Far as I can tell it is almost like being at 100 percent CPU utilization. After a while, the responsiveness will come back for a while anywheres from a few seconds to 10 minutes.
I have started with a soft reset, hard reset, using APX to reload Android and still same issue. Don't act like a physical touch screen problem because it does work hit or miss.
Do have kids in the house and the tablet has been dropped and knocked around a bit.
Really not wanting to throw away a $500 tablet that I bought 18 months ago...
So any ideas would be greatly appriciated on how to fix this problem!
SOD issues
I've been using FLEXREAPER-RF1-EXTREME revision2 since it came out and it has been rock solid but when I try to update to RE-FLEX or CM10-FLEX I get a SOD almost instantly. I couldn't do a REAL format on TWRP 2.1.3 like civato suggested in his forum so I flashed Thor 1.7.3 and formatted /data, reinstalled and I still get a SOD almost every time the screen turns off. If I reinstall flexreaper-rf1 the SOD issue is gone. I tried sleeping without a SD card installed but that didn't help and I'm running out of ideas. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks to everyone that works on these custom roms because they are a thousand times better than the stock ones.
Hi i had the same problem with mine but after rooting and custom rom my acer is better than ever.

Same problem here, stock ICS as well. When the screen becomes unresponsive I have to use a mouse to be able to utilize the tablet, not sure if it's hardware or software problem...
Answer (for me at least)
Found that it seems to be a grounding issue. If when the screen locks up, I hold the tablets by the stainless steel edge then the screen responses. Not sure if that will help others that have had the screen that becomes unresponsive - but interested to see if others notice this too.

So today while in class at college, my phone was acting very funky. I noticed that touch screen response was going crazy (Even the capacitive buttons were freaking out). Pushing on the screen would type randomly, bring the notification bar down, etc. Pushing on the capacitive buttons would usually do nothing, vibrate, or do the exact opposite it is suppose to do. I can usually alleviate the issue by turning the screen off and turning it back on, but it will only be responsive for a very short time.
So, I was thinking there was something wrong with my install of the CM 6.1.1 ROM, so I flashed the Liberated Aria FR008 ROM and... it does the same. So then I load the CM 7 (18 nightly) and it seems fine with it happening every now and then, but I don't want to use CM7 (Albeit great, it's sluggish and isn't up to what I want to use as my daily driver).
I've treated my Aria with care ever since I got it after my transfer from Alltel. I'm usually able to fix my own problems, but this one has me stumped. Any ideas as to why it's freaking out?
CM7 is now up to nightly 39 and there was a big improvement in speed/performance from 34 and later.
I have 34 loaded right now (Just found it in my Dropbox folder); however, the touch screen is still very sensitive.
I've been having very similar problems with my Aria recently; unresponsive, misreads where my finger is, Swype goes nuts, but a quick lock/unlock will correct it for a little while. I thought it was just that my cracked screen was finally giving up. Now I'm downloading CM7 build 39 to see if it's something else.
EDIT: The CM7 build didn't help my problem. I'm upgrading to an Inpsire 4G tomorrow, but I might try a few more things first or while I'm rooting it.
So I found my backup of the stock ROM and flashed it back on there. Still getting the same issue.
I upgraded the stock ROM to the "latest" AT&T version and I'm taking it into AT&T tomorrow.
perhaps its an isolated defect on your phone. hopefully your hardware is still under warranty, but alas we already flashed. maybe you can get a technician to look at it.
Took it into the store and the guy said it's "shot". I'll be able to replace it under warranty.
I should be fine. I'm still confused about how the touch screen became unresponsive, and like I said... I'm usually able to figure this stuff out (Going to college for computer engineering).
Hey,
I've got the HD2 running extremely smoothly with the NexusHD2-Gingerbread v2.2 build.
Since moving to android and trying out WP7 I have been experiencing an issue where after a whole day of running perfectly I will turn the screen on to find everything is washed in white - it's like the screen turns greyscale but in white so everything is still visible and works but in white.
i don't seem to be able to find this problem anywhere else but it has happened with all the android nand roms and the WP7 rom - a soft reset fixes the issue. I'm currently using radio Radio_Leo_2.15.50.14 and have switched around but haven't found one that fixes the problem...
Any thoughts on what could be causing the problem??
Thanks, Luke.
I have the same problem sometimes. Will be glad if someone can explain!
Ive also experienced this, disappears after reboot or sometimes if i turn the screen on-off a couple of times, kinda weird.
Glad to see others are having this problem - seems to be so rare but I cannot find a solution. Would be interested to see if it still occurs now with standard wm6.5.
Anyone else experiencing this or have some idea of a fix?
i too have this problem.many times screen just go off like greyscale.can anyone help?
One more with the same problem...
Never had it with my currentrom (Hyperdroid) until I've read this thread.
Bump for wisdom.
Are you morons really that stupid
Get the screen out of the sun and away from hot surfaces you dumb bastards and it wont happen, it isn't a nand but a screen issue.
With stupidity like that you will be admins of XDA in no time

Erm what the f*ck? No need for that. Any actually, it's not a screen issue, it's an issue in earlier ROM's (well from what I've experienced). Like flash Cotulla's Desire ROM and it happens a lot. I presume you don't really like XDA due to your username? Banned maybe? Why would you even bother making a new account and just trollin'? That's sad, lol.
I only had it when the first batch of ROM's came out. Never withing the past month and a half.
It's like the screen goes negative.
But yeah, there isn't a clear fix for it AFAIK, you should back-up everything on your ROM and try an up-to-date ROM and see if it's still happening. I doubt it.
having the same problem as well
usually happens after i wake up, so during its idle time which is kinda strange
i also noticed it started happening after i installed cracked widget locker, any of you using that?
It happenes to my phone quite regulary but only running android roms, i think around september 2010 it happened the first time. I suspeced my phone, but even after getting a new hd2 it happens sometimes. It usually just happens randomly, not after specific actions. Sometimes it stays only for some minutes and sometimes it can be only fixed with a reboot.
I'd really like to know when this bug will be fixed.
I was having exacly the same issues with my old build. But since im using CoreDroid this problem has dissappeard.
+1 I've only experience this twice, and not since December, but I found it weird both times. I think both times were during a phone-call. A reset worked.

Wow...another keyboard hero....you are so brave typing that, we are all in awe of how awesome and manly and strong and tough you are!!
ANYWAY......STFU...it's not a screen problem.
I too have this problem, and it is my 2nd HD2 and happens VERY rarely, but does happen and has happend on both of them.
OH, and Mr Tough Guy....I live in the UK...VERY rarely get warm weather over here, so it AINT the sun.
You, Sir = FAIL.
Matt
Same here happens once or twice a month no big deal though

I'm currently running imilka's RAM Desire HD v2.0 since a month or so, the pale screen appears sometimes up to 2-3 times on one day and then not for several days. A reboot allways fixes it, sometimes it fixes itself after some minutes.
But i really find it annoying.
This happened to me in most desire/desire hd sense builds.
Now, I use the official hd2 MIUI and gingerbread seems to solve the issue.
I bought my Blade 4 months ago and i have been noticing for the past few weeks that the touch sometimes has become less responsive, and only gets fixed until i reboot the device.
I noticed this behavior with SS RLS5, FLB, CM7 stable and a few nightlys. With CM7 sometimes it got worst being almost impossible to unlock the device, my finger goes to the right and the sliding tab goes to the left. And i have to press really hard until the touch responds. After i reboot it all runs normally for a while.
I am running gen2 (since almost i noticed this situation, maybe it has something to do with it...) and i always wipe everything when installing new roms.
Is this hardware failure?
Thanks.
I think when bugs like this happen after flashing a custom ROM a hard reset will fix them.
I think hard resetting after installing a new ROM is always good practice. Fixed my Galaxy Europa up when I upgraded it to 2.2
I don't think it's your ROM because I have the stock Orange ROM and have the same issues. The screen will become entirely unresponsive to touch and only a restart will fix it. Does anyone else have this problem?
How strange, I've had my phone for a while now and this has yet to happen. Too many apps running?
Modaco is probably a more likely place to find the answers you're after.
I just got my update to ICS 4.04 and it's made my xoom worse! Things have got really laggy, it sometimes freezes when selecting things and typing has become a nightmare again! Has anyone else experienced any problems :-(
Iam a bit annoyed now, might just go and root.

Well its just gone from bad to worse...my xoom went to sleep and when I tried to wake it up it would not come back on. I had to do a soft boot but now its stuck on the Motorola screen. I have tried to go into android recovery and do a factory restore but it comes up with an error
I am really stuck on what to do next, can somebody help please?
Thanks
Hmmm mine went to 4.0.4 and I was thinking the opposite! it seem alot smoother and faster
Mines seems to run slow too after the OTA, but i'm not sure if that's the tTorrent app, when it's running it makes the xoom lag out like crazy, when its off everything runs fine.

You could go into Developer settings and switch off animation or set to .5. That should help with lag. I never use live wallpaper either. A big download may also make it lag .
Well the lag didn't last long because I actually had a complete failure after installing 4.0.4. My Xoom went to sleep and would not wake up, had to do a soft reboot and then could not get passed the motorola boot screen, was stuck on it for hours! Tried to go into recovery to wipe and reset but that would not work either. Tried to push a rom image from my pc but then my xoom decided that it didn't want to be detected by my pc anymore so it looked like my xoom was bricked :-(
Luckily I had some help from some great people over at xoom forums who helped me to get it back up and working by using RSD Lite and a stock Rom SBF file.
I now have a working xoom updated to 4.0.4 with no problems at all
Not sure but I think it may have been a freak accident that just happened to me.... I just hope it doesn't happen to anyone else

My Xoom went to sleep today also, couldn't get it to power up for anything, I then held power and Vol up and down all at same time and she booted right up.
Bone stock wifi Xoom by the way, incase happens to anyone else

Mine has gotten really bad with scrolling lately...
Seems that I can only scroll either up or down (or both) for no more than a couple seconds. Ive been able to move my finger up and down on a scroll area and it only lasts a couple seconds and seems to "lose" my finger press even though my finger never left the screen or the area. I have to wait a couple seconds before I can scroll again or else it doesnt recognize the finger press.
Sometimes I think the lags just android its never constantly smooth. You'd think dual core would be as smooth as butter but it really makes no difference. Still waiting for Google to fix it. I've had months of smoothness then the odd time something slows it down
I agree, 4.03 was great with no lag issues then nightly 90 had some lag again with scroll issues, so far on #91 I'm not having any issues. I had the biggest problem when I was trying the OC @1600, I slowed it back to 1408 interactive and all is smooth as glass:thumbup:

.. & I'm just not sure if i should return it or if these issues are pretty much whats expected.
I have not upgraded to ICS from HC
Problems so far:
1. Re-booted twice on first day i had it. I'd been using it all day (installing/using apps etc) - I used it all day 2 days after that w/out issue.
2. Re-booted last night? Not sure exactly but there were no apps suspended in the bg from the night before (~8 hours before) - i had quite a few in the bg
3. 2 out of 3 times so far if i "shut down" *the power button will not power it back on* - i have to plug it into the wall/power for it to turn back on
They aren't the worst issues..yet? I don't know.. I'm pretty happy with HC at the moment & will probly avoid ICS upgrade for a bit.
Stick with it?
#3 is not supposed to happen.
#1 and #2, it depends on exactly which version of the Honeycomb firmwares you are running. Honeycomb 3.2.1 didn't do those for me, but the versions pre-3.2.1 had occasional incidents.
It's 3.2.1
We can assume that you know that you have to hold the button down for three seconds to power it on when it's completely off. Therefore, I would see about swapping it because #3 sounds like a major problem.

Yeah i just shut it down again and it would not come on until plugging into the wall. Problem seems pretty consistent. Ugh i really don't want to have to go through this.
QUESTION: how can i pretty much wipe this device of the apps/personal info i've entered into it before sending it back?
QUESTION: Try ICS then if i'm gonna ship it back anyways?
To wipe the device, you run "Factory Reset Data" in the Settings.
Sure, might as well try out ICS if you're curious.
Sometimes when mine gets a random reboot/shutdown I have to hold the power button down for about 10 seconds to turn it on. Try this if you haven't already.
yeah the power button issue may be it not being totally shut off, so when you hold power you are shutting it down instead of starting it. happened to me a few times so figured it was worth a mention.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. Although it's a bit inconsistent on whether or not i have to hold it down for 3 seconds or 10+ one way or another (after a struggle) it does appear to consistently come up. Emphasis on struggle though.
Have you tried any custom roms yet? I personally seem to have a more stable tablet when using a custom rom due to the various tweaks and fixes.
Just install ICS - such a relief from Honeycomb!

This thing decided to re-boot randomly again. So i decided to upgrade to ICS (4.0.3) - nearing last ditch efforts.
Problems came up right away:
1. Browser having strange connectivity issues? I have Wifi Analyzer and watching the scrolling graph i don't see any dropping or problems with the connection itself. So i'm not sure what the situation is but sometimes it just doesn't want to load pages - I can't fully say if Dolphin has the same problems or not.
2. Screen tearing. Fairly frequently there's a diagonal tear occurring across the screen, when switching around in/out of apps.
3. The shutdown issue. This problem is at best the same, if not worse. So in hopes of shrugging off the other issues i did a "shut down" and i seriously battled with the power button and never got it to come back up w/out plugging into into the wall.
- What's interesting is how it always comes up RIGHT AWAY once it's plugged into the wall. I tried and tried and tried again with holding the power button 3-10-20-30+ seconds random intervals nothing worked. Hard to express the amount of times & different timings i tried.
So i'm gonna give it a whirl like this for a while and see.. i might end up doing a factory reset .. if problems persist after that it's going back to newegg
Edit: i just tried to play a youtube video and it stopped trying to cache 1/4th through it.. then i pulled up Aljazeea live and it's echoing/choking/stalling .. these problems didn't exist prior. Also, i noticed another streaming (scanner radio) app not doing so well earlier too... heh

Do a factory reset already and test it without installing any apps. You need to find out whether the problem is with hardware or software.
There's a good chance that it's a hardware problem since you got it refurbished. Maybe it was broken already and Asus didn't completely fix it.
Do yourself a favor. Root it and install the latest CM9 build. I was having all kinds of reboot and sleep issues with the stock ROM, mainly the ICS one but a few issues with HC as well. CM9 has been rock solid for me so far.

Fixed it for you
CM9 might not suit him, so instead he should try out several roms until he finds one hes satisfied with
Telling him to install a specific rom is fine, but it doesnt really help him out.
That said, since you brought up "rock solid", Team EOS build 19 has been really rock solid for me. Currently 202h uptime and counting.
Wow i didn't think things could get much worse but they did.
I decided to do a factory reset because generally things hadn't improved. Initially after the reset things were "OK" ("better" @ 1st but short lived)
Then a while later..
It appears the connectivity of the wireless has completely died. It will connect to wireless fine but is incapable of anything beyond that. No web pages, no connectivity/data transfer in any apps.
I did another factory reset, installed nothing, imported nothing, signed into nothing.. same issue.
Even though i have 2 other netbooks right here w/no issues at all, i tried resetting the AP multiple times. No diff.
Just before the wifi dying it was acting like it was before the reset, where things would randomly fail to stay connected, videos wouldn't fully cache, web pages wouldn't fully load etc. (general connectivity problems that didn't exist in HC, but have in ICS since update)
I think ICS was really the nail in the coffin for this thing.
