[Q] Facebook Widget Problems - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Nexus 7, Rooted, Stock 4.2.1....The face book widget when placed on home page works just fine for hours, then all of a sudden it doesn't, no update new or old, won't open fb....remove from page, put back on page and then works for a few hours more, then doesn't....hours can be 2, 12, 24 all random. Any thoughts?

Delete facebook account, because it's only stealing your data to sell you stuff.
My hatred towards FB aside:
Does it happen on more launchers? (can you try?)
Does it happen with any other widget?
If answered yes for first, no for last, then it might be an issue with FB app and you should report bug to developers.
Maybe the FB widget service gets killed in the background. If you don't re-add the widget, but try to restart the tablet, what happens?

Your hatred aside.....I do understand.
The N7 is less than a week old...sticking with stock for now until I figure out what I need. That said I haven't loaded any other launchers. Tho next time it quits I'll reboot and see if it comes back.
Thanks

This was expected yes.
Check running services when the widget is working, and when it stops, check running services again, to see if something is missing. If it is, then the background service gets killed somehow, I'm not sure how to get around this issue.

Noticed changes in DL30

I don’t see a thread like this so I would like to start one
I have noticed a ton of changes in the stock DL30 build and there are still some i probably haven’t ran into yet. I think it would be fun to see what changes people have noticed. . I know a lot of these are in the original leak thread but that thread is too saturated with questions and issues people are having.
I would kind of like to keep it clean so I would like to see lists of changes only and not a ton of questions.
I will start off with a few things I have noticed so far. I have left out some of the obvious things that comes with froyo but feel free to add them if you wish
-Facebook syncs contacts automatically. No need to get friends and then check the ones you want from Facebook
-You can now manually join contacts. Maybe you could do this before?
-You can now use custom ringtones for contacts that aren’t local on the phone
-You can use media files for ringtones
-Can now use multiple exchange accounts
-Can now use out of office for exchange accounts
-Can use pin unlock even though it doesn’t work because it says you need a symbol
-New theme which I actually like.
-Has new e-mail and text counts on the Touch wiz icons
-Can use media or voice tones for alarm
-The sliding thingy when you are typing, makes it much easier to correct spelling mistakes
-Can change fonts
-Media hub added
-Includes Samsung keyboard which I prefer over the others now
-Dock now works!
Only thing I don't like is that you have to enable background data in order to do anything related to data. Never had to do that before.
Anyone got yahoo email setup on the new DL30? I tried to read email (HTML based) from like amazon and other spam I usually get and now it say message too long, cant not display.
Anyone getting that too?

Pinch to view home screens.
Email count on the home screen is awesome....

Few things I noticed so far:
For exchange accounts it lets you choose seperate peak and off peak sync times which is cool.
The notifications has an auto-rotation on/off button along with your wifi, bt etc. But it doesn't really work with your homescreens unless you install laungher pro or something.
Signal strength has definitely increased.
Also, after I got DL30, I was asked to update camera firmware, and that added a couple of minor changes to camera.
Also forgot to mention that while in Car or Desk cradle the home screen now is landscape. Also when you get calls when on either the call screen is landscape!!! can you say "Awesome"!!!!
jv
And I am sure everyone is dying to know this, they replaced blockbuster with media hub.
Couple of things, keep in mind I was rooted running a custom ROM previously and now have LP running:
1. I like the changes to gmail (I was used to 2.2 gmail from my droid, took me a sec to figure where the send button moved to)
2. For whatever reason, after flashing and restoring apps with Titanium, I was debinged, however, that applies to voice search and all functions of the car dock aside from basic search. Hence, none of those functions work (voice search, navigation, maps. Not a deal breaker..just an observation.
3. The battery icon seems likes it's not even tied to the actual charge amount. Again..no big deal, I use simi clock and I check my battery there.
4. Gallery renders FAST..
5. Market still on old version...hasn't updated yet.
Haven't had a chance to really check any flash websites but will get around to it.
Issue with back button from contacts
Has anyone else had the back button stop working when in contacts?
It worked fine when I first got done with the update, then sometime after sync of facebook it stopped working. Not sure if that was the cause but something made it stop.
Be sure to open up the camera app. New firmware there.
I also noticed some of the bloat apps I had to remove when I first got my phone are gone. CityID immediately comes to mind (which I thought was the worst thing ever!), but I also noticed the Kindle app is missing and someone already mentioned Blockbuster. I thought they were more, but my memory is escaping me now.
The stock music player is also different, but this is my first Android device and thus first experience with 2.2, so this might just be a froyo thing. When I'm playing music and turn the screen off, when I turn it back on to the lock screen, there's a piece of CD hanging from the top of the screen. This can be pulled down to control the music. I never noticed this before, but I also may have never used the music player with the puzzle lock screen. Anyway, it's a cool feature that I dig. If I change to the AOSP lock screen (which I like way more than the puzzle lock), will this feature still be present?
I found a workaround for the Exchange pin issue.
If you setup a PIN before you setup your Exchange account from settings-> location & security-> screen unlock, it will work. You'll still see the message about device security needing to be setup at first but it will start syncing and not ask again.
Hope this helps!

Thank you, thank you, and thank you!
This was the main thing that bugged me on this rom and i was able to get around it. If you have the security policies already pushed you can go into Device administrator and remove the one for your exchange account, then go change your PIN, after a while your e-mail account will tell you that you need to enable the security policy again.
Thanks again!

Glad this worked for you. As an Exchange Administrator and user, this is one of the best features of Froyo!!! No more full keyboard to enter PIN.

3. Yeah I noticed that also. It was showing all blue but when I go into settings it shows battery at 80%. Oh well.
5. Must have just updated Market because I went in a few minutes ago and it's showing the newest one.
Love this new update.

How can you tell if its the new market? What changed? Also, tried some web sites for flash but doesnt want to play. I'll have to try with a different browser.

Yup, CityID, Blockbuster, Kindle, the demos for Need for Speed and Tetris and a few others.
I'm wondering if this was an early version of 2.2, before they had a chance to add all that crap in. Would be nice if Verizon listened to their customers and actually choose to leave that stuff out in 2.2.
you have to go to the market and download adobe flash player 10.1
i have noticed SIGNIFICANT battery/signal strength increase.. I was barely able to get 16 hours out of my battery before and now mines been on for 14 hours and its still at 60 percent.. my time without a signal was at like 30% on DL09 or DJ05 and now its at 4% without a signal. much more memory available.. could be because im using super clean tho..

No deep sleep & suspicious Google Chrome

I've noticed today that my Note was missing the deep sleep when screen was turned off. This happened after I replaced Opera Mobile with Chrome browser. I was testing by turn screen off and on several times and observing with CPUspy only under battery use to get rid of any charger effects.
With Chrome browser installed, my Note was not entering the deep sleep. Then it is back to normal sleeping after uninstalled the Chrome and reinstalled the Opera.
However not sure if the Chrome caused the problem. I am on Stock rooted ICS.
Its possible, Chrome is still in BETA mode, So it is not without its bugs, But hey, its gone now so dont worry
I used chrome all the time with the SGS1 + HTC devices, but with the Note i kinda like the stock browser
I think Chrome for Android is no longer in beta version anymore.
I use Opera just because of text reflow feature. I'm not sure if Note stock browser has this.
I too have encountered the same issue. My note has yet to have gone into deep sleep since installing the non beta chrome version. Glad to hear it's not just me. Will try to uninstall and see how it is.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
What is deep sleep and how do you know when your device is in deep sleep.
Same here! Uninstalled & everything was fine. But I really like chrome.. :\
Even I faced the same problem.
My Note is already back to normal deep sleep behaviour. No even need to wake it up before unplugged.
Love to have Chrome but no choice...so sad
That's strange. I'm on Chrome on my note and deep sleep is fine.
I don't think Chrome is the issue. I'm also stock and have no problem with deep sleep.

If you haven't tried the app Carat you should. It will let you know what is using your battery and give you recommendations to improve battery life.
It does not give you immediate feedback. You may have to wait a week or two.
I found that three crapware widgets that Samsung supplied with the Note were using battery even though I wasn't using them (APMobile News, Social Hub, and Yahoo Finance). I had removed them from the home screen the day I got the phone, but didn't know that they were still causing a problem. I disabled them through settings and it made a big difference.
I'm thinking you may have issues with syncing rather than the app itself. I would try to go in Accounts and Sync, and under your gmail account, disable the "Sync Chrome" option (you may also be able to see if Android is still busy syncing there). Then again, without the sync option, the Chrome browser is really not that great...
I personnally use Chrome when I need to access tabs opened on my PC, the rest of the time, I use "ICS Browser+", which now replaces Opera that I was using previously. Very snappy, has built-in support for "low contrast" (i.e. power-saving) display which can be switched on/off in a single swipe (when you actually need to see the pictures on the webpage ), and most importantly, has text reflow.
HTH!
Creating a TB widget and freezing/defrost & launch chrome as needed seems to be working alright. I'm gonna stick with that for now.
I am on paranoid android 4. Thor kernel 15. Smartassv2 cpu gov. Chrome non beta and syncing enabled. My note enters sleep fine.
I have also chrome installed and my phone does deep sleep without any issues. Chrome is not to be blamed, probably something else is effecting. Please check again.
Guys,
Are you using s3 weather widget?
I get feel sleep issue when i use s3 weather widget.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
I've also noticed since installing chrome my GS2 now fails to go into deep sleep.
It looks like its only if you close all tabs on chrome before "exiting" which will cause it to constantly use CPU. You can check this by going into the task manager, chrome will be using 5-10% CPU.
If you don't close all tabs before "exiting" CPU stays around 0%.
Looks like a bug to me.

I follow this advice and now fix with ICS B+, not bother myself going back to Chrome for time being because ICS B+ is pretty almost the same with some extra nice features in comparison to Chrome, and the Opera would be removed for good.
However only Calendar is selected among my sync options in Google account.
This has still no issue with deep sleep on my Note Stock ICS rooted. I never wake the phone b4 plug nor unplug from charger.
UPDATE: Came back to Opera Mobile coz the nice Text Reflow feature, Text selection with good options, etc.

Nexus 10 crashing regularly

Hey,
is anybody experiencing this, too? My Nexus 10 crashes pretty often, received it last Thursday evening and until today (Monday evening) it has crashed 4 times so far... (crash = complete freeze, I can only press the power button for a long time and wait for it to restart). Happens mostly when many apps are running, and 3 of 4 times happened when opening the Chrome browser...
Does that happen to you, too?
Dont worry, you are not alone

seriously, even after following the tips from the other thread (i never had HD Widgets installed and i disabled the google currents auto sync) it crashes, 3 times today, and 2 times yesterday. i didnt pay 400 bucks for a broken tablet, so i would like to return it or get a refund or replacement, or whatever... but the google customer support isnt working.
i went here: support. google. com/ googleplay/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2411741&topic=2453057&ctx=topic#DE
(country selection: germany)
clicked: Please contact our support team by email to return your device.
then: Email us (since i dont want to check shipping status and dont want to cancel my order)
then selected: I received a damaged device and need a replacement (or have other warranty-related questions)
and then there is just a blank page with no email adress, support form, etc... (see the attached screenshot).
do you know how to reach the customer support? i would call them but there is no telephone number either. google really screwed up big time here, first the ordering, then the shipping, then the device and in the end even the support -.-

I also changed to Firefox and deleted Facebook, so let's hope that solves the problem. Would be great to have a perfectly working Nexus, and it would signal a pretty poor performance at the Google HQ for programming an OS that can be easily crashed by a normal app from the Play Store (not some jailbreaked cracked virus app stuff).

I too have been experiencing a lot of crashes on my nexus 10 but I think I may have found a fix. I uninstalled the Facebook application and the Facebook messenger application. Also I uninstalled the last chrome update and I'm using dolphin browser instead of chrome browser. My nexus has not crashed once since Hope you guys find this helpful

I was having a couple of crashes a day and stopped using Chrome after seeing that given as a possible fix. I'm now using Boat Browser (three days) and thus far, have not had a single crash. I like Boat, although I'd like it more if it kept my tabs when I turn the Nexus on after sleep...

Facebook Messenger Waking Screen on notification

I can't pin it down to this being an Android 4.3 issue or an update to the app itself so i'm asking for other peoples experience here. When you receive a facebook message and the screen is off, does it wake the screen?
I should also mention it happens too on my Nexus 7 (2013)

Yeah, I also noticed it started yesterday or the day before. Android 4.3 stock firmware. Pretty sure it's apps fault, tried different ROMs and got exact the same result. Someone should report this to developers.
I have a HTC One S, same thing occurring here... it appears to be the Messenger App's fault. Since I have had the same issue across 3 different roms
Yeah, I got the same issue with parandroid and the stock 4.3.
The screen wake up when I get a message on the desktop computer. I've shot down all the notifications on the phone and the problem's gone now.
**** .
So I'm definitely not alone then! I've just reverted back to the previous version and that's fixed it for the time being. Also sent the devs a message from within the app but seeing as this nod Facebook, who knows when it will get fixed

Good to hear, it's really annoying, I hope they fix it soon. Any tip how to revert back to old version? Or maybe you have the right apk to share with me please? I don't even know which version was the working one
Facebook is always a fail app.
The new update fixed it momentarily, but it's doing it again. I'm on 4.2.2 on an S4 and it's doing it too. Kills the battery, I hate it. Turning notifications off completely only disables it as it automatically turns on after a few hours.
Anyone have the APK for the version before this crap started happening?

Version 2.53 (here) doesn't seem to wake the screen for me...
Can't believe they still haven't fixed it... Wish more of my friends used hangouts
Well, thanks for the effort, but it still didn't fix my problem. Also tried different versions, but neither of them did work. Gotta wait for official update.
Okay, so I've found a fix. After trying absolutely everything I tried greenifying the app. Obviously when it's greenified the screen doesn't wake, because you aren't receiving any notifications at all. Strangely enough though, when you de-greenify the app, then run it again. No more screen wakes!
Have no idea why it works, but it does! So I'm happy!
I take back what I've said... It works temporarily, then starts waking the screen again

I'm also having the same problem, with my HTC One and my Nexus 7 2013.
I can reproduce the problem on the followings devices:
* HTC One running Sense 5
* HTC One running Google Edition RUU (4.3)
* Nexus 7 2013 (4.3 JSS15Q)
I dunno if the problem is really app related or not... What i find out is that trying to login with my friend account, the screen doesn't wake up when receiving a message. I tried further and created a dummy facebook account, and same, doesn't wake up the screen.
Just my facebook account is waking up my screen.
I didn't try long enough with my friend account and my dummy account if the problem will appear sooner or later.
Could be account related or app related, or both...

Okay, So I tried a fake account as well. Bam. No screen wake upon receiving notifications. So i'm going to assume it's account related... Only Facebook could pull this off...unbelievable..
unbelievable but true! it is account related. The question now is:
What do we have in common? (Developer?)
and are there any settings in Facebook which could stop this behavior.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but... did anyone find a solution? I've got the same problem with Facebook. I remember I applied for beta testing some months ago, but then I "resigned" and went back to the normal app. Problem still occurs, though. Isn't there a way to solve this?

[Q] Homescreen widgets not updating/freezing

Any idea what would cause ALL of my homescreen widgets to stop updating i.e. freeze for no obvious reason? I'm completely stock & un-rooted, and when this issue first came up I did a factory reset but the problem still comes up out of nowhere. Everything will be working fine and then out of nowhere they all stop updating. Here are the widgets I use:
Fancy Widget
Switch Pro
Android Pro Widgets
BattStatt Pro
I've been using these same widgets for at least three years, and over three different devices, and this has never been a problem, which makes me think it's something weird with KitKat. At this point I'm removing widgets one by one to see if I can narrow it down, but it is so f-ing frustrating because everything will be fine for a day or two and then WHAM all of my homescreen widgets just lock up and the only way to get them to update again is to reboot the device which is a pain in my ass. It's worth mentioning that even after all the widgets freeze the stock 'Weather' widget still works fine...
Help!
Nova launcher much better than touched just use that?

Thanks, I'll give it a try to see if I still have the issue. I used to run LauncherPro back in the day - even paid for the plus version - but then the dev promptly stopped releasing updates, and I felt somewhat ripped off. . . From then on I've stayed with whatever launcher came stock on the device.
How did you manage to put widgets on lock screen?
I had it on my S4 but I couldn't find that settings in the S5.

I posted about the same issue in the Verizon GS5 forums: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2738912. Hopefully one of us will get an answer. My weather widgets were stopping the refresh (BeWeather and Beautiful Widgets), and I use Go Launcher and Apex. And my interval between requiring a launcher restart drops - initially its a couple days, but as time progresses, I need to reset more and more frequently.
Not sure its a KitKat specific issue - my Nexus 7 (2012) running KitKat runs all widgets fine.

So, I'm NOT the only one after all. And you have this issue even on Apex? Not good - I was hoping that would be a solution for me.
In searching around online I found the following info on another forum:
"this issue occurs because kitkat has changed the way it manages background alarms. most widgets that update frequently use "alarmmanager" to trigger each update. but in kitkat, the trigger event is intentionally delayed so that android can group processes together, saving battery life and data use. so, for all those clock and weather widgets, the developers have to write a bunch of new code for kitkat devices, so that their widgets update at the intended time."
After reading this I tested a theory and set my alarm to go off in 2 minutes. The alarm went off, and sure enough all widgets were frozen . . . I figured it must be the 'Timely Alarm Clock' app causing the issue, so I uninstalled and went back to stock alarm. This didn't work however, because two days later everything froze up again . . . I'm wondering now if it might be one of the other apps I'm using in the background, but there are so many possibilities and the issue is so intermittent. I never use 'task killers' or battery monitoring apps, so that isn't it. I could spend weeks trying to narrow it down, and it's always possible that more than one app could be causing the problem.

I can't speak for the author, but I believe he was referring to "alarms" from a programming sense. I.e. the alarm is what "wakes up" the phone to tell it to go on the internet, fine the latest weather info, and update the widget.
Widgets are working fine on my Nexus 7 (2012) that runs KitKat. I think I had a similar issue on my SGS3 when I first got it, and I posted to those forums a couple years ago, but now for the life of me I cannot remember what the solution was...it may have been to move to Apex!
Interestingly enough, the problem seems to have fixed itself. There were updates to Apex in the meantime, perhaps its that.
My friend with Go Launcher is also seeing the same impact - the issue is gone.
Has your issue gone away?

I hesitate to respond for fear of tempting fate . . . But since installing Nova launcher two weeks ago I haven't had a single issue with home screen widgets freezing. I am also experiencing truly great battery life now, but I'm not sure if Nova had anything to do with that since I made a number of other tweaks I'd done trying to fix the widget issue. In any case, I finally feel like my S5 is glitch free and functioning as a next-gen device should.

Mine is still working good - only a few sporadic widget hangs. There must have been an update that fixed the issue - I just did two factory resets and my widgets still update fine.

I have had this happen with many widgets. It's been pretty annoying.
