Did I brick my N7? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My rooted N7 has stopped starting on. It will stay stuck on the Google screen with the unlocked icon and remain so until the battery dies. My only option is hard reset and choose recovery. Any other option will bring me back to the Google screen. The recovery will allow me to be in the ClockworkMod. When I went to the "apply update from sdcard" option, there are no more root folders. The N7 has been wiped. This causes it to not connect to the computer, Mac or PC. PC will detect a device, but it will list it as Grouper and not finish the installation of the drivers. I cannot push recovery images into the device because I cannot connect to the device. I tried pushing images using ADB, but my terminal states that there are no devices. I tried using Wug's toolkit, but it cannot connect to the device to reboot it or carry on to any steps.
I am stuck. What can I do to fix this? How can I just get it to just start up?

Download the drivers (link is somewhere around here, don't have it ATM) if it only shows up as grouper.
And/Or go to bootloader/fastboot mode and flash a factory image via fastboot.

Download drivers as above mentioned then use Odin or fastboot method to flash stock (now available on Google devs). I recommend Odin just because that method has worked for me before when my device wouldn't even turn on. It also also possible to use wugs "flash stock+unroot" button in his toolkit after installing the drivers, just boot into boot loader from powered off state and press flash stock and unroot with the soft brick option selected. This method is my usual unbrick method.

Help with Toolkit for Nexus 4 and trying to 8. 1-CLICK FOR ALL [unlock, root, rename, busybox - Fastboot Mode]
after my phone is unlocked and is trying to root is says waiting for USB Debugging Mode, the USB drivers are installed on my computer and my phone is in USB Debugging Mode and i've tried unplugging it and plugging it in again and it never like registers with the toolkit I can never get any further.
Can anyone help? I only wanna try Ubuntu for abit and then go back to Android :good:
Did you update your adb drivers after the 4.2.2 update?
If so, try properly closing the toolkit using x in the menu to exit. It will fully stop adb from running. Then open the toolkit and try again.

Which toolkit are you using?
Possible solutions:
1. Update the whichever toolkit you're using and try again.
2. Use a different USB cable or a different USB port.
3. Close toolkit program and re-open it.
4. Reboot your phone and select USB debugging. Uncheck and check it.
5. Plug it back to the PC and select the root option again.
6. When selecting root option, make sure to install a custom recovery as well. (You can do it manually as well.)
7. Are your drivers updated? Install the drivers again.
8. Once you're done rooting it here's the link to Ubuntu. Follow the steps and you'll have it in no time.
http://www.qbking77.com/development...touch-developer-preview-on-nexus-devices.html
NOTE: The Ubuntu preview is just a preview. You can't really do anything on it.
i'm using NEXUS 4 TOOLKIT V1.3.0 also i've downloaded now what do I do with them?
Download the new adb files here: http://goo.im/devs/mskip/toolkit/adb_fastboot_files_for_4.2.2.zip
Extract and overwrite the files to C: > Google Nexus 4 Toolkit
Make sure the toolkit is shut down properly by using x in the toolkit menu. Make sure adb is enabled on your phone and plug it in. Open the toolkit and you should get a prompt on your device to allow it from the computer. Now you should be able to go about what you needed.

Most likely you have to switch back on USB debugging in developer options.. When you unlocked your bootloader it wiped everything so USB debugging would have got unchecked again.
I had the exact same problem. So download supersu.zip to your phone. then open the nexus toolkit flash recovery .then use the volume keys to select recovery phone reboots into recovery flash the supersu.zip after that use ROM manager to flash your recovery of choice. For some reason I could only get the toolkit to temp flash recovery even when I checked the option to keep it

Formatted Phone, ADB not found

Hi, I accidentally formatted my phone yesterday night. Trying to flash the factory image from command prompt using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312 but I am stuck on Google logo and cant enable the USB debugging mode under settings. I think i did install the driver using Root Toolkit as it shows under device manager but toolkit says adb device not found (see attached).
Please advise how can I bring back my phone to normal.

Boot device into boot loader and in the toolkit tick the current status as "soft-bricked/bootloop" and do a "back to stock"
*hint* You don't need ADB; you need fastboot.
Have, same issue, but in bootloader mode, windows not seen device.
Only what I have chance to fix it, write some from usb-otg thru twrp?
In download mode too several computers with different cables not see device. Only one pc with windows xp reconize unkown device with pid vid 0000

Nexus 7 Stuck in Boot Loop After Font change

So to make a long story short, I've been stuck on android 4.2.2 for a while now because I changed the Roboto fonts (Roboto Bold, Roboto Italic, and Roboto) After discovering this I went and re-rooted my tablet to put the fonts back on so I could OTA update. I couldn't find the fonts on any font applications that matched the SHA1 checksum, so I plugged my device into the computer to put the files on manually I downloaded earlier. This is where some problems arise. My computer has having some problems with the drivers for some reason, so the only way to move the files on was if I turned USB debugging off. So thats off, and my computer won't register that the device is plugged in. Well now we get to the part of the story where I was using ROM toolbox lite and tried installing all three of the new fonts all at once. Bad idea, I now know. So my device is stuck in a bootloop, and when I try to go into recovery mode it gives me the error: No command set. I have no idea what to do guys. Any help is very much appreciated. It is kind of upsetting how a change in fonts can brick your device.
1. Download and install Nexus Root Toolkit v1.8.0: Nexus Root Toolkit v1.8.0 | WugFresh
2.. Connect to PC and Boot in Fastboot Mode: VOL DOWN + POWER ON
3. In the toolkit, under "Back to stock" tick "Soft-Bricked/Bootloop"
4. Click "Flash Stock + Unroot"
5. When done you will (should) have a working Nexus again.

Hello, Thank you for the helpful tip on how to fix this. I tried what you said but a problem appeared making the device fail to apply the factory image. What I am assuming is it was because the root that I used did not make me unlock the bootloader. so i'm doing that now. It should let me flash a factory image after that, right?
UPDATE: I tried unlocking the bootloader, but it didn't work. my device is not being recognized via ADB because I think the drivers are not properly installed, or it could be because USB debugging is not on. So I cannot get to the point where I can unlock my device.

[Q] Help with bricked Nexus 10

I am trying to root my Nexus 10. This is what I did, but it ended up bricked!
I installed the Android SDK on my Windows 7 computer, and downloaded the Android USB drivers and tools.
I turned on USB debugging, and checked I could see the device with adb list devices.
I downloaded recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.3-manta.img, booted the tablet into bootloader, and flashed it
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.3-manta.img
That seemed to work, so I went into recovery, but recovery had all sorts of errors - it couldn't find the sdcard, or mount most of the partitions.
Rebooting stops in the animated logo, apparently for ever.
I have since tried to reload the factory image, but the computer no longer recognises the device - fastboot devices returns nothing.
Help!!!
[Later] The tablet was running the latest O/S (if I could boot it, I could tell you the number!)
Things have got worse. Now, when I go into bootloader mode, the volume keys don't do anything any more, so I can't even turn it off now
Make sure fastboot is set up properly, may need to reinstall drivers or try another computer or try another USB
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277112
I have a feeling the recovery you flashed was corrupt in some way, did you by chance check the md5sum of the image first?
If your able to get fastboot to recognize tab
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot erase system -w
fastboot erase boot
Download latest twrp recovery
Check md5sum
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img
Then you will either need to flash stock system.img from fastboot or boot to new recovery and adb sideload a ROM
Hopefully your emmc is not to severely corrupt to all this, best of luck!

Thanks, that was pretty much what I did. The trick was to get it working in boot loader mode. I kept trying to reboot it, and in the end holding down power plus both volume up and down all at the same time for 2 beeps made it work.

I have the same problem, however I can't access my Nexus 10, fastboot devices and adb devices gives back an empty line, so I can't access the N10 with fastboot or adb, to lash a ROM. Factory reset from CWM doesn't work, ˛internal card can't be accessed from CWM ("E: Can't mount /sdcard).
How can I get out of this trouble? (Solutions in forums usually involve reflashing with fastboot or formatting the external SD card. These solutions don't work here...
Any idea would be highly appreciated...

Keep trying to reboot into bootloader mode, until it works. Hold down power and both volume buttons at the same time until it beeps twice. If the volume buttons then work to change the option on the left, but fastboot devices on the pc shows nothing, try reinstalling the Google drivers on the pc (via Device Manager, update drivers, have disk). (may have missed out a step in device manager instructions, but there are plenty of Google hits on installing add drivers if you don't already know how).

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean.
I can get into into bootloader mode after keeping the 3 buttons (power+volume up+volume down) pushed together (after two beeps). From there I can't boot the device. (Boot gets into the Google animation forever), so as factory reset.
Also device manager doesn't see the N10, so I can't update the drivers on my PC.

After some repeated turning off and on, now I can see the N10 from the PC (also updated the USB drivers to be on the safe side).
If I enter the bootloader, fastboot sees the N10 in a normal form, if from there I go into recovery mode, adb sees the N10 in recovery mode. Should I proceed from here by using fastboot, or rather adb?
Csaba
You should just use volume up + power (or the whatever the volume rocker button closer to power key) never had it beep to get there
To both of you, follow the steps from above, so long as it isn't a hardware issue this will get you working

Glad you have managed to make the device visible again (it's really scary when you can't, I know from yesterday!).
Go into bootloader mode (not recovery), and follow the fastboot instructions demkantor gave earlier in the thread.
Get your factory image from https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#mantaray.
Get TWRP recovery from http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/128.
At least, that's how I did it.

Or terminal for Linux
md5sum nameoffile.extention

Thank you very much. Tablet is up and running again. :good:
Now, my next question, after being unsuccessful with CWM, I tried using TWRP for rooting the tablet, however it wouldnt start.
When I go from the bootloader into recovery mode only a laying android figure is displayed with a red triangle with an exclamation mark inside.
I have USB debugging enabled. What can be the problem?

Can my Nexus 7 be revived or not?

Hi everyone,
My Nexus 7 3G 2012 was getting unbearably slow.
For this reason I decided to TRY to flash Cyanogenmod on it using the NEXUS ROOT TOOLKIT.
Except for rooting I have NEVER tried this before.
What the result is is:
. I can still charge it
. It will only boot to the Google Logo.
. I still can get into Recovery Mode.
. My PC can no longer recognise this device.
Is there a way for me to revive it, or does it qualify as being hard bricked.
Please understand that besides using NEXUS ROOT TOOLKIT I understand nothing .
As long as you can get to your bootloader you should be fine, unless your having eMMC issues which im running into right now. If this is WugFresh Nexus Root Toolkit you should be able to use that to complete all the tasks needed for last resort restore. First though, since you have recovery, ill assume TWRP since i think that is default for NRT, you can sideload a new rom if you dont have it on your device right now. Install adb/fastboot if you dont have it already.
Google USB Drivers: https://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
1. Boot into recovery
2. Tap Wipe -> Advanced Wipe -> Check Dalvik Cache, System, Cache, Data (Not Internal Storage, unless you want to wipe your internal SD) -> Swipe to Wipe
3. Go back home once your done (lower left home button)
4. Tap Advanced -> ADB Sideload -> Swipe to Start Sideload
5. Connect to your PC and start ADB from terminal/command prompt.
6. type adb sideload [location of cyanogenmod-update.zip]
7. repeat again with Gapps or boot, then download to device and flash normal in recovery.
If that fails or you just want to return to stock and start over:
1. boot into bootloader (turn device off, press vol down + pwr)
2. If you have had the drivers installed before then you should be fine, when the device is booted into recovery or just booting (before bootloader) your computer may not recognize it but should once bootloader is loaded.
3. connect to computer and select the option under Restore/Upgrade/Downgrade: Current status: Device Soft-Bricked/Bootloop and click Flash Stock + Unroot
4. Follow NRT prompts
Hi RLM703,
Because of your easy to follow instructions I was able to restore my Nexus.
I had to use the 2nd part of your instructions and return to stock.
My PC did not want to recognize the device.
In the PC Device Manager I finally got him to recognise MTP_USB_Device.
I was so happy to see the four balls spinning again.
I guess burning your fingers is a way to learn.
I will have to put my hands back in the fire again get Cyanogenmod.
I am very gratefull for your assistance.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH !
