I am astounded as to how much better the battery life is.
With my usage i was lucky to get 6hrs on a full charge. Well.... first charge of brand new note 2 and im on 60% still and its been on battery for over 13hrs up to yet!!!!
It's great isnt it... I thought the same but in my case I came from an S3. Note 2 really is an amazing phone.

It will probably be on 40% by the time i get in bed. Do you think its better to fully charge it again or just let it run down as i will be back from work earlier tomorrow
Matt
For the first charge I let it run down to 5%, then after that I just do whatevers needed.
Its personal pref tho, some people will say you need to, others say it's not necessary.

If i let it go below 5% and it ran out would that be bad?
I dont think its gonna hurt, its just good practice...something I remember reading once.

Just don't let it run out. The first few times you use the phone, you should do a full cycle charge.
Let it run down to 5% or less and then charge it to 100%

No you don't need to fully run down the battery. It is actually a bad practice on lithium based batteries.

when they say "fully run down", don't they mean run down till literally zero? on advanced phones like ours, you'll never get a chance to fully run down the phone because it'll shut down way before that happens, unless you keep it turned off and sitting there for a couple of weeks, which should almost never happen to anyone.
so i think you can run down the phone, at least till it turns off by itself, and then charge again till full.
The battery life is beyond words,I never get to drain it more than 30% ,I just charge by bed time, dnt bother about battery calibration unless u change ur rom

I'm thinking about getting a spare battery. Would my calibration be off if I swap batteries often? I'm planning a trip and gonna get a spare just in case.
Yeah, it would be pointless if you are constantly swapping them because although the batteries are the same or similar they will have different capacities....I use two batteries myself so I always have one ready....I like it better that way....

I don't quite follow. First you are saying it's pointless to get another battery if you swap them often. And then you say you have two batteries yourself.
Each battery has it's own capacity/memory. This is not governed by the phone. However, the phone may not reflect the actual battery level if you swap batteries at different power levels. That's not so much of a big deal, as the main intention is to keep the phone powered. I've swapped batteries often with one of my other phones and haven't noticed any problems. The battery that was older didn't last quite as long as the new one, but it still worked.
I think he was saying that its pointless to calibrate if you're gonna swap often

Ah, OK. Misunderstood.
What does "calibration" actually do? Will it improve the efficiency of battery usage?
Allegedly, I can't tell you for sure how much it will extend battery life because I don't do it....but supposedly if you do it faithfully for a week or so it works
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Basically your battery has a memory.. some what, so its gets use to its regular drain and recharges. There's a couple of ways to calibrate it but I like to run it down till its dies and then charge it by usb for a slow recharge.. I do this atleast once a month.

It will just give you an accurate reading of your battery. You will still have the same amount life calibrated or not.
An example would be, let's say your battery is at 15% and it dies in just 10 minutes. Or if it's at 5% and the phone takes forever to die. That means the battery isn't calibrated.

so if you can..write here if you charged your galaxy s4 before use or if you did something else and how your bettry life is?

Not necessary. This has not been needed for the past... 6-10 years?
Most battery issues are due to apps running rogue.

Yeah but for every battery powered gadget they say that. It's more of an insurance for the manufacturer. So that when the consumer screws up and at the same time didn't follow the instructions, they can blame the consumer instead of actually fixing the fault.
TL;DR
Lithium batteries can be used immediately. If the manual says charge takes 3 hours and first charge should be 5 hours that's rubbish. They do not suffer from memory effect hence don't need to be discharged to 1-10% before recharging. Multiple short charges (e.g. from 60-100%) as compared to long charges (e.g. from 10-100%) is better for the battery and in all essence makes the battery last for a longer period of time. I'm not having any issues charging. I also charge my phone at night while I sleep.
You should let your phone die at least once a month, then charge it all the way to 100%
With the phone turned off. I promise you will get the best life out of your battery. Good Luck MF.

No.... Just, no.
Same problem
I had the same problem, I think I have to buy a new battery
A couple of things...
When applying an update on Android platforms, the battery stats are usually wiped, this results in wonky battery drain and charging indications and it usually lasts a few days to as long as a week.
So, the short story is, see if it doesnt correct itself after a week.
On occasion, Android updates dont quite go right and regardless of how Google 'intends' for updates to go, 25% of the time, youll end up doing a factory reset after a firmware update (poor performance, new error messages, wonky power issues including higher than normal battery drain and slow charge rates).
Again, the short story is, after a week, if it hasnt corrected itself, Id suggest a factory reset, then give it another week to see if the battery issue corrects itself. Obviously, realize that if during that week you install anything new that this could affect your battery life. I personally try to keep my phone as stock as possible and disable as many stock apps that I know Ill never use (my Note 3 is at around 25 stock apps disabled and Ive only installed 15 of my own apps, none of which would likely have a negative impact on battery).
Best practices for the proper care and feeding of Lithium Ion batteries is pretty straight forward. There are alot of myths out there from Nickle Cadmium batteries that just dont hold true for our current generation of batteries.
1. Whenever possible, keep the battery charged. If you have an outlet available, plug your phone in, regardless of whether its fully charged or not.
2. Try to keep your battery / device in typical room temp environments (ie a temp range of 60-85 degrees F). Obviously, this isnt always possible but dont intentionally leave a battery / device sitting on the dash in your car in direct sunlight (direct sunlight can raise the temp by as much as 25 degrees higher than the actual ambient temp), dont put your battery / device on top of a heater, etc.
3. Drain the battery periodically (referred to as a full discharge*), currently, the rule of thumb is once every 3 months and re-charge with the phone OFF, once the phone has a 100% charge (use the volume rocker to see the current charge without having to boot the phone), unplug the charger, THEN boot the phone. This gives Android a chance to see what a full discharge and charge should be (and cycles the battery giving the electronics inside the battery a chance to see the same discharge / charge).
* Note that a full discharge in todays components is when a device shuts itself down when on battery power due to lack of power in the battery to continue operating said component without damaging the battery or the component any further. Do NOT continue to turn the device on after it shuts down in this manner without first plugging external power into the device as this will likely dramatically shorten the life of the battery.
The last rule is most important..
4. IMPORTANT! Use your device like you normally would. The above three are tips for making a battery last as long as possible but when and if your phone makes you change how you live your life to any degree of extremes, you've forgotten the point of what your phone is.
And I will now give you source information to the above, these guys are the battery experts...

And lest anyone want to debate the battery cycling, here is a direct link to that information as well.

Read VERY CAREFULLY before you tell me Im wrong on this, batteries are a particular hobby of mine, I know enough to know what Im talking about.
Today i accidentally let my battery get down to 1 percent and my phone shut off but then i plugged it in charger and letting it fully charge. Is this bad for the battery, or did it still have some charge left after it shut down at 1 percent for battery safety.
I let my battery die out all the way for my s3 and s4. I have never really noticed a problem. If you do run into battery problems though, you can always just buy a replacement one for 10-15 bucks off eBay. One of the luxuries of having a Samsung with removeable battery!!

It's generally not good to do on a regular basis, but every now and then shouldn't really hurt it. And, like mentioned, batteries are pretty cheap.
this was the first time i did it by accident but if the phone shut off at 1 percent doesnt mean it was fully drained right?

Lithium ion battery can not be charged if it falls below certain charge level. To avoid this, your phone reports zero percent well above the critical charge level. So, even with 1%, you are well away from causing serious damage to the battery. If you do it repeatedly, it will reduce the life of your battery though.

Wherever I charge my Note 3 fully, even if I leave it on for extra 30 mins, unplug charger and reboot the phone, phone comes on to 98%. Even when I charge full and just unplug, it drains to 98% on idle in 20 to 30 mins. Whenever it gets to 98% then it stops draining. I believe I need to recalibrate?
I have tried everything I can but to no avail! Every good re calibration app with super reviews! Still nothing! Even Manual recalibration and FULL WIPE (Including Internal SD), tried total drain to 0% and switched off itself too.
Need suggestions. Cheers!
the battery will charge to 100% then turn off and allow the device to go down to about 95% before recharging back up. It stops you from overcharging your battery and destroying it, there is no drama with your battery from what you describe mine does exactly the same thing on both devices I have had

Thank you bhai! But, do you think it's MJ7 firmware? Battery is not as good as MI2, and earlier. And can you we flash MJ6 over MJ7? Since both have the new bootloader, it should work fine yes?
Mine does the same! 98% limit.
I get 10hrs usage before recharging again. :good:
Stop being so anal - . Battery will drop slightly, mine does it, as do many others in this thread. 100% to 98% is nothing. It's usually after 90% that you start to see the real battery life anyway.

Do you understand words have more than one meaning? - In this instance you "seem" to think that the term anal is used in a sexual context. Whether it's a miscomunication in language/Lost in translation or you are just too stupid/naive to realise.. I do not know. - So think before you start crying in a thread next time. A word you may say in your country may offend many here also -

Calling someone anal does not constitute the same as saying someone as you put it "an a**hole!!" - I never called you stupid or "native" (Naive is what I said) I merely stated I didn't know if you were either of these you implied otherwise... I never claimed to know anything, So your point is moot. (Google it if you're stuck)

Stay away from Battery calibration Apps, they can play havoc with your phone also, at first they work but they always have a tendancy to mess up at some point.
Unless your battery is draining at a crazy speed I wouldn't worry too much. - You should be getting about 15-20 hours with an average of 3-4hrs screen time out of the devce with moderate use.
Sorry i mean stupid/naive not native.

My Note 3 also drops from 100% to 98% very quickly even with no use of the phone. It also seems to drop to the low 90% range very quickly but then it settles down and battery life is excellent.Surfing the web seems to use more power than watching videos.I lose about 3 to 4% overnight.
I noticed my battery discharge faster after upgrading to latest MJ7 firmware. Before the update, my battery lasted very long. Hopefully samsung release a small update fix on this battery bug.
