Set timer for.... - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On my GNex, I used to be able to talk in the Google Search app "set timer for X minutes" and it used to generate an actin to set an alarm X minutes from now. I thought this would be a great thing with the new clock app which has a countdown timer but unfortunately, I can't seem to get it working on my N4. Has anyone else found this?

this works for me when I use google search on my nexus 4 ("set alarm for 5pm...").
what i really want to be able to do is set alarms for a day & time in the future - this function does not seem to work though.

Hmm. "set alarm" seems to work for me too. But "set timer for" does not (which is what I used to say). I guess I just need to get used to the new way of doing things. It's a shame as it would be great to interface with the new countdown timer in the new clock app.

Oh wow, er, now I'm confused!
Come to think of it, the new "what's this song" voice action doesn't work either. Instead, it returns a wikipedia card of "this song" (apparently a song by George Harrison). Very odd.

Yeah, "set timer for ten minutes" worked for me, too, by setting an alarm for the appropriate time. I wish it would use the countdown timer, though. Is there a phrasing that uses the countdown timer instead of the alarm?

I notice you guys are both in the US. I'm wondering if this is a language thing. My unit will be set to UK English. I've tried setting Google Voice Search to US English but it didn't make a difference. However, it might be down to the setting of the phone as a whole.
Is there anyone outside the US who is getting this to work?

Yes, I believe you're right. I changed my language setting to UK English, and "set timer" didn't work for me, either. Changed it back to US English and it worked fine. (I tried "set alarm" while I was on UK English and was amused by the accent when it replied "setting alarm" -- my phone never sounded British before!

Interesting. Where did you set the language? In voice actions or the main Android settings?

Main settings under "Language & input".

oh how I wish "set timer for" would actually set the timer instead of the stupid alarm. What were they thinking? Putting something in the oven and then telling your phone to set a timer for 30 minutes would be so awesome and be used all the time. Telling your phone to set an alarm for some event would be used almost never. Jesus google, you can at least try to think things through.

That's made it work for me now
Still, as others have said, timer should be countdown and not alarm.
Also, "what's this song" still didn't work. I think it might be regional since we don't get the music listening widget in the UK.

Repeating alarms: How does built-in "repeat" work?

Under Sounds & Notifications, when one selects "Reminders", there is a tick box called "Repeat".
Presumably this means that when an alarm sounds, it should repeat until dismissed. Mine only plays once. Am I missing something?
bump
Hi there,
Mine's a XDA Exec, and it does repeat although it pauses for about a second or two first. Not nearly loud or persistent enough to be a really decent alarm clock though!
OK, so it seems that aeAlarmPlus is the way to go - looks for an alarm and then comes up afterwards to do a repeating/escalating thing of it's own. Works well.
hi there
ok if u talking about alarms then go to clocks & alamrs --- go to alarm tab then set the time whet ever u want to set then click on the "BELL" icon
there is the option to make it repeat and even u can chose the sound
HTH

Gugi
Yeah, I am using it too.
My problem is that I cant kill the alarm. It gets repeating and I am getting more and more mad. Or is this on purpose ? as I have to wake up and tick the box of with the stylus....
Anybody has the same problem?

Playing with alarms may have been the reason why my calendar was not able any more to remind me.
When soft resetting even alarms of all kind made me mad.
I hard reset (horrible job with a lot of work to do) solved my problem, but I do not touch the alarm any more.
Hope your problem is different
Huib
i have the same problem. It goes off every time and repeats for a couple of times and I dont see any option to close/kill it.. good thing I still have te sense not to bang it against the wall like an alarm clock.
i guess if the built in alarm function is not working or it goes crazy, just use any other free alarm application. i know theres a lot of free application out there.

replace HTC Home

I am trying to replace HTC Home, i dont like how slow it makes my phone. The idea is to have a bunch of different plugins and such in UltimateLaunch.
these are the main things I want in UltimateLaunch, and I was wondering if you guys could help me out in finding them?
clock
I really liked the look of the clock in HTC Home, I used the DigitalGlow Yellow one. does anyone know of a good clock today plugin that i could use in UL?
photo contact dialer
This feature was awesome. I found one today screen app that was ripped from a TREO 700w (link) but it seems to run really slowly. It gets the job done, but I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for a faster one?
weather
I have tried Pocketweather and SPB weather but didnt like either of them. I just want an app that has the current conditions, and a few days in advance, do you guys have any ideas?
Thanks for looking at my post and helping out. If i could find all of this stuff, it would be amazing.
What about the automatic ringer? that one feature is why I use HTC Home
what do you mean by automatic ringer?
Search for rlToday. I think some have used it to make an HTC Home like today screen. I think dcd has offered to share his code if asked.

On the 6-tab version... I belive it's the far right tab: the one that lets you select sound off, vibrate and ringer on. The far right option: automatic ringer. Best feature ever on a phone.
spb phone plugin offers automatic ringer also, if by automatic you mean that it goes silent when you are in a meeting and such.
I assume that's what they mean... i have htc home and it automatically goes into vibrate when i'm in meetings, it is a nice feature for the forgetful mind... now if everyone's phone did it. maybe at the movies too that would be a nice feature

what does it actually do? like how does it work? time based? and where are the settings? i only use silent and vibrate.
Turns off the ringer when you have an outlook appointment schedueled as 'busy' (default appointment)
I set my classes as a recurring appointment (as well as finals) so the phone ringer automatically turns off when a class starts. As to not piss off professors, embarass myself and/or bother with turning off and on the ringer several times a day.
works for meeting, etc. as well, of course

I have my phone set to vibrate and ring. If I set it to automatic, will it not ring and still vibrate, or is there a registry setting to set it that way?

Have exact same problem, think there must be something related to the amount of time the phone has been in standby too, if I test an alarm, by setting it to go off in 10 mins for example, it works fine, left overnight, never works....
I had issues with the alarm after using Klaxxon and uninstalling it.
I am currently testing to try and get it working each time and seems to be ok.
I reinstalled Klaxxon ticked force remove windows alarms and intergrate applyed the changed and soft booted the phone.
I then started klaxxon again and remove both ticks and soft reset again.
I then used AlarmFixWM to remove duplicate entries from the notification queue.
Not 100% if this now works 100% but seems promising.
Im sure there is an easier way but the above its what I did.
Found this thread which seems to be related
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=333521
Have installed SK tools, cleaned notification queue and set it to run cleanup auto in middle of night....
Alarm actually went off this morning...
Hardly conclusive, but gives me hope!
Odd, seems to be a longstanding WM2003/5/6/6.1 issue, not TD2 specific, but I moved to topaz from an artemis where I never had a single alarm problem... you would think if the artemis hardware could cope with my appointments list/alarms etc. then a topaz would be fine too...
P.
Alarm sounded again this morning
Happy Days...
Will post back here if problem reoccurs,
Otherwise, assume this has worked for me.
P.
Hey popkid,
Any chance you could post exactly how to do this using SK tools? I cant seem to figure it out and I have this annoying alarm problem!!!

1) Fire up SK Tools
2) Hit Tools (Bottom Right) --> Settings
3) 2nd Tab "Automation"
4) Toggle "Notifications Queue" to "Use in Auto Mode" if it isn't already
(Take a look through other run options to run and deselect them if you don't want them running automatically)
5) Toggle "Scheduled Run" to "Yes"
6) Set time/day/date etc. to run (Mine is set to run at 3.30am every day, probably overkill!)
7) Set "Silent Mode" to "Yes"
and you are good to go
Alternatively, to fix your Notifications Queue just once:
1) Fire up SK Tools
2) Category (Bottom Left) --> Maintenance
3) Select "Notifications Queue"
4) Action (Bottom Left) --> Mark Duplicates (should be a fair few if you are having alarm problems)
5) Action (Bottom Left) --> Delete Marked
Hope this helps, post back if not!
Good Luck
Pauly
Thanks Pauly, ill see if G-alarm wakes me up in the morning!!
Dunno if you guys can help, i got Klaxon and alarm is fine, but if i snooze using shake then it never goes off again!
Can you show me your settings or give me any ideas?
My solution: Whatever alarm you have, install HTCPedia Topaz Setting Tool, go to Power Settings and set AC Resuming and Battery Resuming to 20 seconds, works EVERY DAY for me with Klaxxon.
That change made no difference when I was having my difficulties, think that gives the device longer to process your notifications queue if it is large, but if the notifications queue has other issues then it won't help.
P.
Edit: SFAIK Think G-Alarm changes both of these registry values to 120 seconds on installation, That is what they are set to on my TD2
they are located in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\Timeouts\ if you wish to edit directly,
"BattResumingSuspendTimeout" and "ACResumingSuspendTimeout"
But does that fix the snooze function?

doesn't sound like the same problem you have to be honest, the notifications queue stuff is related to the alarm never going off in the first place...
I'm not a klaxon user, but have had it installed in the past, are you sure that you don't have the light sensor alarm deactivation switched on or it set to switch the alarm off (rather than snooze) on shake?
P.
Thanks for replying mate, how would i know about the light sensor bit?

I thought there was an option in Klaxon itself to use the light sensor to deactivate the alarm when a light is switched on?
Ah... Ok... just checked Klaxon release docs and it seems that isn't implemented yet... so thats a red herring!
It does say though... flip phone over to snooze
and shake to deactivate
I'm guessing that whatever you are doing is triggering the deactivation rather than the snoozing....!
One way to check, if you enable the integration to TF3D in klaxon then the time noted for the next alarm on your front page should increment to the next alarm set once the alarm has been deactivated, but not if it is snoozed, I think anyway.
P.
hey, yeah sorry i turn it over! it used to work with stock rom i think .. do you know what each option does in klaxxon? might just try g-aram or something?

No, sorry not sure, guess there is some sort of sensitivity set somewhere where it determines whether you are shaking or just turning over, I used to use the turn over function in klaxon when I had it and it worked fine... in G-alarm I get what you describe btw the sensitivity is set such that when I turn it over it thinks I'm shaking it and deactivates, so that may not provide the fix you are after either... and G_alarm isn't free... if you hunt around, I'm sure there was another klaxon thread on here (possibly by the developer himself) that had some details of the sensitivity being changed between releases, may be a reg edit you can do to fine tune it?
Good Luck!

New to Android: Is there an Automatic Silence?

This is my first Android phone so sorry for the noobish question.
Back on Windows Mobile HTC put in a 4th "sound settings" option called Automatic.
Normal, Vibrate, Silence, Automatic
When in Automatic mode the phone would switch to Vibrate any time you had a scheduled appointment on your calendar. So you didn't have to worry about your "Dancing Queen" ringtone going off when you schedule an important after work meeting because it fell outside the time-frame of some app with limited options.
Does this automatic option exist on the Incredible and I'm missing it.
Or is there an app that sets your phone to vibrate dynamically based on your appointment calendar and not just some simple setting within the app?
I didn't see it at first glance, but I remember this feature! Pretty handy if you forget to silence your phone in a meeting, and all my meetings are synced to my phone's calendar.
I used to use an app called Locale by two-forty am or something, I forgot the developer's name and my phone just died so I can't check. But it looks like it's no longer free although the app still looks very promising. Do a search in Market cause I'm sure there are more that will do the same and are free as well. Also check this video out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzlFlK-1dNY
At about 9:54 the guy in the video talks about a feature on the phone called polite ringer. It can be useful if you forget to mute the phone or if your app for some reason forgets to do it for you. The whole video is very informative as well even if you already know about most of the phone's features. I hope this helps! Good Luck!!
I miss my Omnia and the etiquette mode. Place the phone screen down on a table and it went to vibrate mode.
That is one feature of my ex-iPhone that I really liked...1 click of the switch ad it shut up!!!!
Plus 1. I miss Mobile Shell on my old WinMo. I'm using ToggleSettings now which is free and does a good job with settings changing based on time, but it does nothing based on meetings.
To Funny...
YEAH I miss my Omnia (& touch shell) The screen was so wig giddy whack, which was after a month of use & the dreaded lock screen. Never got a Omnia II because it did not have an optical mouse? I guess my incredible is okay to above average. I hate the aspect ratio of the wallpaper. WTF lolz I wish I could have a wallpaper per each screen or have it re-size to the screen, especially for caller id? Also i'm not terribly fond of the HTC scenes ui it's almost useless.
My 2C
DJyoSNOW
several apps are out there- FlipSilent, Turn Silent- and they seem to cover customized silencing too!
Auto task keys off the calendar descriptions. There is a ringer silence widget out there too. (Apps)
It seems none of those really tie into calendar. Shh! auto-silencer allows you to setup times where the phone goes silent but it's seems king of hit and miss. Locale looks the best with ton's of options for setting when things are silent, but it's not free.
I think I might try out locale for a couple days. After getting a phone call at 1:30am and not being able to get back to sleep I need something to better manage automatic silent times.
There's another app call "setting profiles" that does what you what. It does basically the same thing as locale minus the plugins. You can set profiles to calendar, time period, schedule period, location and more. It's also a lot cheaper. I think it's $3 compare to $10 for locale. I came from windows mobile as well. This is one thing I really wanted from android. It took me a while to find it. But I think settings profiles takes the cake for its features and price point.
Oh I forgot to add that it comes with a widget where you can place on your homescreen so that you can toggle profiles manually. On the widget, it also lets you set a timer for the profile. For example, when I go to a movie, I can toggle the silent profile for 2 hrs and it will go silent until the time expires. After that it will automatically revert to your default profile.
That's pretty cool. It does do just about everything Locale does except the plugins. The free lite version even does most of the stuff I need it to.

Countdown alarm recommendations

I would like a countdown alarm for a couple of purposes.
1. When I am cooking. In this instance, multiple alarms at the same time would be useful.
2. When I have an afternoon doze.
Preset times would be good, since normally, when cooking things are usually "cook for 10/15/20 mins" etc.
Thanks,
Jon

^ what he said.
Did you know that the stock clock app has a built-in timer? You can also set it to snooze or give you an extra minute, etc. After starting the clock app, swipe left till you see the numeric keypad. Enter the time you want and then click start!
That's good to know for my bedtime alarm. However, I would like one with presets. I had one on an iphone which let you set about 16 different preset timer durations. To start and stop each timer, you just pressed it. Very simple.
Anything like that for the Android?

There are tons of these timers for android
A quick search on the PlayStore would give you at least 1000 results (literally). Here's one that allows you to set pre-sets and remembers them, and counts down even if your phone loses power: Chef's Kitchen Timer
This one already has tons of presets: Kitchen Timer
But yeah; I've only given you 2 options. Use the search tools, they give even more
Very nice finds. Just what I needed. Thanks!
