Screen dimming? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a question do to the screen. Whenever im scrolling through the homescreen it randomly dims and gets brighter could that be something with my rom or 4.2 or my launcher?
ROM: Paranoid Android 2.99 Beat 6
Nova Launcher
Kernel KTmanta

I think the automatic brightness option is a bit flaky on the N10. Seems overly sensitive to me. You can always turn it off and set the brightness manually.

I never use auto brightness.

Is there any way to change default brightness level of the auto mode?

nope, i would manually adjust it.

Was reading somewhere that the magnetic stripe on some of the cases can interfere with the light sensor. Not sure if OP is running inside a case or not.
At any rate, mine also does the same and I have it in one of those cases that auto-shuts the tablet off when closed. It does not bother me too much yet.

My case hasn't arrived yet so no case atm.

This would be nice. I like the auto-dim feature but it drops a little lower level than I prefer.

Automatic backlight broken or just badly designed?

As far as the automatic backlight setting goes, it is my understanding that the phone should check how bright (or dark) it is, and adjust the display brightness accordingly (brighter when out in the sun, darker when sitting indoors / dark rooms).
However, it seems to me it just sets the backlight at ~40% and that's it. I went out into the sun with my HD2, and the brightness didn't change and I had trouble seeing what was on the screen.
Is there some kind of way I could test, if the light sensor is working? Or is this setting simply badly designed and I should set the brightness myself?
I'm currently running latest Energy ROM (23569 Cookie May 09) but it was the same with the stock ROM, so I don't think it's related.
PS. A little side question, if I may; if I perform task 29 before flashing... do I still need to do a hard reset after flashing a new ROM?
...in the very least... are there any apps that make use of the light sensor?
Well I know the acctualy percentage in the settings never changes when its on auto (atleast not for me)
But I can clearly tell a difference between being in a dark room and the backlight being on low
to being in the sun and it on max.
Ive also never had trouble reading the screen, the screen is always plenty bright enough.
Prehaps you've got a bad one?

I know an app that can measure the amount of light in lumers.

Care to share the name of that app?
Also, it's difficult for me to say if the screen is busted or not. On max brightness (as opposed to the automatic setting) it's a lot more comfortable to look at in the sun, albeit indoors it's OK on any setting really.
EDIT: I don't suppose the automatic setting can be tweaked for better performance via some registry changes?

I think it's called Lumos.
Try searching for it.
You certainly can test it. Just cover the light sensor (upper left corner above the screen) with something. I don't recommend thumb, as you might press 'start' button. You will also need any application with white background.
The brightness should clearly drop.
Auto only sets the brightness from 20% to 60% (or so it seems). But the effect is clearly visible.

No change at all.
I'll restore the stock ROM to see if it's a firmware issue, and I'll check that Lumos application.
EDIT: Lumos clearly detects light changes and works well. Seems it's either something to do with Energy ROM after all or possibly I'm just blind and I can't see any changes. I'm still going to check the stock ROM, just to be safe.
BTW, once more, can someone tell me quickly if hard resets are needed after task 29?
EDIT 2: OK, it DOES work after all, I'm just blind; the change however, on the automatic settings, is minimal. I actually had to put the phone under a light-bulb, as covering the sensor didn't really work. I wonder if it should be calibrated like the g-sensor...
night time
i think the day time brightness is fine but the night time setting is far to bright. i would love for this to be customizable as well

Can this range be increased?
For indoor use the auto-adjust works fine for day/evening/night, but outside I always need to turn off the auto-adjust, so it can go to 100%. When back indoor again, then switch to auto again and so on ... and so on ... and ...
Just installed .NET CF + Lumos and will see how it works out.

Keyboard Light

Hi all,
I was wondering if there was a way to force the keyboard keys to stay lit up until you close it. It seems to be cutting out mid type.
Thanks.
It turns off when you it's bright enough in the surrounding area. You can flash cyanogenmod and set all the brightness settings.
Thanks,
I guess I was hoping to be able to control this manually without having to flash a different rom.
At this time its not possible to control it manually from stock froyo. Maybe in gingerbread?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 running Cyanogenmod.
do you have it set to automatic brightness? I noticed my keyboard turning on and off while typing and the screen dimmed and brightened with it. Turned off the auto brightness and hasn't done it since.

Turning off the auto brightness hasn't made any difference to me on my DZ. The backlight for the keyboard and capacative buttons seems to turn off and on quite often for no apparent reason (badly calibrated light sensor ?).
has anyone tried covering up the light sensor with a sticker or something? lol idk

That would certainly work, you can put your finger over it and show how it's the light sensor doing it. Probably not the best long term solution though

dimming backlight

Is it possible to dim the TF backlight further when the device is rooted? I personally feel the minimum setting is stlll somewhat too bright for me when in the dark. It would also save some extra battery life i guess but that`s not the main issue
as far as im aware this is not been achieved yet, however i believe the app screen filter is succesful for some but never tried it myself

Oh this works like a charm thanks! Single tap dims the screen to the preset brightness level i can decide upon myself. Way darker than stock
glad it works may try it myself now lol!
That is a great app. Now if there was only a way to dim the arrow keys too.

[Q] Do you use auto brightness or set value?

Just curious to see what everyone does on their tablet. I stick to using auto brightness but turn it up every once in awhile when browsing the web. The screen is just very nice to look at IMO. So what do you guys do? If you don't use auto brightness, specify your brightness sweet spot.
I have auto brightness off and set to the lowest possible setting and only occasionally adjust the brightness higher.
I also use the lowest possible setting. When I need to change the brightness, I use an app "Display brightness".

Auto brightness in 4.2 is one big bug
I would love to go back to using auto-brightness but it's a buggy piece of **** on 4.2+, it's been over a month now and they still haven't fixed the ****ing screen flicker issue, completely disgraceful.

I use set values from Extended Controls widget. I have it to like 7%/25%/36%/64%/100% and switch manualy according to what I need. Auto brightness never worked good for me on ANY android device

Thank you for turning me onto Display Brightness! Now I don't have to depend on auto-brightness and how it drains the battery! I'll be upgrading to the Pro version to support the developer!
BTW... I'm so glad it doesn't black out the screen completely, otherwise I would probably have a Razr with a completely black display (I was testing it on my Razr before I installed it on the N7).

Auto brightness not working correctly

When I'm in a light room the screen goes brighter but if I walk into a darker room, the screen doesn't dim unless I lock and then unlock the screen.
Anyone else having similar issues?
Yep got the same here. Thought I had a faulty ambient light sensor but obviously not.

Just tried it by covering the light sensor to make sure, no problem here (G935F). My only concern related to brightness is that the s7 just has auto brightness, but no adaptive brightness.
Uncheck the auto box and recheck. Then don't touch the slider. It's usually because in marshmallow the slider moves with the auto bright and most people touch it which makes it hold position.

There seems to be a bug somewhere still. I just tried to move the slider while auto brightness is ticked and to cover the light sensor afterwards again and it still worked and to my surprise it even took into account that I lowered the brightness and took also a lower brightness at the covered state and took my initial setting after uncovering, pretty nice, so there is indeed still adaptive brightness. After ticking und unticking auto it went back taking the default steps for brightness as before.
Having the same issue here
Definately not touched the slider.
Also, I have tested the light sensor and it appears to work fine so definately a software issue. Though I imagine we will see some software updates to fix bugs shortly after the official release date.
So you can adjust the slider with the box checked and get various levels of auto? Does it learn?

Yes.
I can't tell for sure, when I change further steps the previous seems to stick, at least to some extend so there is a logic behind it, but I can't tell for sure if it really is based on each step and sets it accordingly or if it's just changes the range it operates in. Anyways I'm a happy camper.
Also, I could reproduce the device not changing the brightness, when I put it to full at darkness it won't move anymore in auto. But as soon as I lower it again it will also change accordingly again, maybe at those with the stuck brightness the min brightness is only raised, but not lowered anymore, but just an assumption and doesn't help anyone atm unfortunately.

This is the first Galaxy phone I had, that Auto brightness actually works the way I like it.
It seems to be working fine now. It just takes a few seconds for the screen to dim (maybe I was being impatient).
After testing it further it's actually really good auto brightness.
It works, just takes some time to adjust to the lighting. Maybe the default settings are set to a certain time. Maybe with root we can adjust this..

It seems to only do it quickly when the device is lay down (as 954wrecker said). Maybe Samsung did that so it doesn't annoy you when using your phone.
this is definitely a bug imo... the auto brightness doesn't change for me either...

I also have an auto briteness issue, when I disable AutoBrite and set it manually about half my apps override the setting and enable AutoBriteness in the app's screen usually dimming the screen? SpadesFree one example and I do not see an override in the app.
Confimed that I'm having same issue, auto brightness not adjusting and slider not movingoing. Have to move it manually
Same issue. It needs to be fixed manually by editing services.jar (root needed)
Nothing else will work. None of google play apps will help with that issue. Does not matter what you do, it will always dimming if you don't fix it in framework.jar
