[SOLVED] How do I "name" my Nexus 10 - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I connect to wifi my Nexus 10 gets identified as "android-55b14d7c2daeba9". On the other hand when my son's iPad connects to wifi it gets identified as "Nicks iPad". I'd like to have my Nexus 10 to be named "Jerryps Nexus 10". I think I have looked at every setting possible and don't see a way to name the device. I've searched in vain. Does anyone know how to handle this?
Solution = I just used an app called "change hostname". Worked/works perfectly.

Not easily I'm afraid

It is quite easy actually, well not actually changing the name, but making it appear to have.
This works on windows ..
Where you see "Nexus 10" connected as a media device, right click and rename ... Done ..

How is that an answer to my original question? I may as well put a p-touch label on the back.

Try this: Settings>Wi-Fi>Settings (button in top right corner)>Wi-Fi Direct>Rename Device (top right corner again)

Don't know whether you can do it on stock android, but I'm CM you can change the android hostename in developer options. (To enable those tap the build number a few times in about phone).

Thanks, some nice stuff in there, even if a lot of it is really a ADW.EX tutorial.
Just fyi, you have a typo in the video description--you say ADX EX launcher.
About Customize Menu--you can reorder (or remove theoretically, but this was buggy for me) the items that appear on the top bar and in the drop-down when you push the menu button. I use this so that I can have Add in the menu, because I keep the top bar hidden and there is no other easy access to add/remove/move home screen pages.

I have to try this when I get home, the homescreen redraw drives me nuts, and its completely unecessary imo!
EDIT - OMGGGGGGGGG finally, the tablet has no effing homescreen redraw lag, thank you Jade Eyed Wolf!
Oh, oh. Just did this and now the tablet won't start!!!! I just get the initial "galaxy tablet 7.7" screen and then it stays black....
Any ideas? The only thing I changed was this
"Add this line to "/system/build.prop":
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=0"
Help!!!!!
can someone post a copy of their build.prop (6810)? Would that help?
I can get into recovery, but rebooting form there doesn't do anything.....
Anyone with any bright ideas?
I can get into recovery, but I can't connect to the device via the pc to get at the files. well, that isn't quite true, I can see them if I use a pgr called DROIDEXPLORER, I can copy from the device to the PC but not back the other way. So I tried to edit the build.prop locally and push it back (using droidexplorer) but the one on the device just stays the same with the edit above in it...
I'm now considering flashing a new FW as the only way to get the tab going again.
Any help?
followed instructions and still couldn't write to sd card with ES File Explorer. Can't tell with homepage redraw... What's bad is that this killed my internet connection. After rebooting, the status bar shows me connected to either my home wifi or my H+ service provider but I can't access the internet nor my local network... Restarting the 7.7, deleting the relevant lines, restarting my router/cable modem (still have internet on my main comp and ipad) all didn't help.
I guess I have to reflash my 7.7.
OK, so after a sleepless night (the little one was on full song) I reflashed my Tab this morning and way hey! It is back in the land of the living.
Pheww.
Jade, I think the hack to keep the homescreen in memory might need to be revisited? I followed the instructions to the letter. After applying the hack the device just would not come to life. It wasn't a case of screen-off, device on either. I plugged it in to a PC and there was nothing. The only way I could get the PC to see it was to start it in recovery.
Maybe it is just a combination of things on my machine and I guess these things can just happen, but I think it might be worth checking?
I'm totally happy with flashing now though
Just thought this could use a bump since it was so helpful to me.

It worked for me (Galaxy Tab 7.7 wifi) so you probably entered something wrong... Actually I realised that after entering "ro." the keyboard inserted a space after the dot, so it looked like this: ro. HOME_APP_ADJ=0 and it is like this: ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=0 see the difference?
I realised right away and fixed it. If I were you I would try it again....
It works for me alright, I don't know if at the end uses too much ram and slows down other things, if it does I'll just delete that line and that's it....
Thanks to Jade W. good idea...

Nope, just tried it again, result dead tablet... My tablet definitely does not like this line in build.prop
So, I would advise caution with this line. Take a backup before trying it or get comfortable with reflashing.

[Q] Edit Mini Apps tray on 6810?

I apologize if this has been discussed, I really did search and only found one place where this was asked, but there was no answer. According to the Samsung 7.7 features page it says this "Mini Apps : Upgraded so you can choose and edit your own Mini Apps tray. You can easily access favorite features such as Calendar, Email, or PenMemo as a pop up over full screen applications. " So obviously my question is this. How is this done? Or is it even possible on my model? Thank you and again sorry of this has already been addressed.
If you look at the bottom bar on your Tab you will see an icon that looks like an upside down 'v'. Click on it and it will bring up your mini-apps tray. You can launch those mini apps over the app you are in.

Ok, didnt think I forgot about you did you? I think this is what your looking for. The edit function shows up when you press the mini apps button. Lower right corner, cant miss it. This is all stock icons with edit function built in. Hope this is what you wanted. I tested this on my rooted stock 6810. Let me know if it works.
PS: For anyone that might want to know how I did it. All I did was use the "layout" folder in the Res folder from the apk that has the edit function. Then rezipped, changed name and permissions, and put back into system/ app.
Awesome... Thanks for your time. I'll try it when i get home tonight. I'm thanking you now anyway...

Not sure this goes along with the rules on XDA and security in general. There is a reason you no longer have access to a device. We can't and should not take the risk and guess what that reason might be. At all times we should assume an unauthorized access attempt. Especially in this case. Reported (under reserve).

Issue with NatWest banking app

Hi guys, I got hold of my nexus 6p today and I've installed a couple of my most used apps. One of those is the NatWest banking app (UK). However whenever I try to sign in, it says that there is another app trying to interfere with it, and FCs. Now I haven't installed any different apps to what I had on my old phone, so I was just wondering if anyone had the same experience?
Also just to confirm I do not have flux or anything like that running!
Thanks,

I had the same issue on my Nexus 6p but I tried disable all the app if possible. That was natwest support answer. But that didn't work for me but what did work is when you press the keys to enter your phone number to activate the app. Each press do it very very slowly. I think that what ever other app or process is interfering with the natwest app stops reading the key presses after a few seconds. That give you enough time to type the rest of the numbers needed start the activation of the natwest app.

Thanks for your advice.
I tried that and I managed to type in the second line by typing a new number every 10 seconds , however when trying to type the first line it always had the pop up at the 4th number! No matter how slow I go! Really frustrating! But at least that's progress!
Right guys I have found out what the issue was! The issue was - the numbers I was typing in a row. For some reason it didn't like me typing 0741. (The start of my number). I found a way around this by typing out the rest of the phone number then adding the bit it didn't like afterwards! And it worked! I've managed to get on the app now!
E.g
If your number is 1234567890
Type like 124567890 then add the 3 after!
Hope that helps!

Glad to hear that you managed to get the app activated, it's a very strange thing that my number also start 0741. Surely it's not that nos series that is causing the issue. Very very strange. Hopefully the Nat west support team will see our tips in the xda developers. :fingers-crossed:

Notification when I press Power Button

Hello ...
I have the Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) with Android 6.0.1 from Saturday (NOT rooted ... yet). After a lot of hours searching and setup I have this "problem":
When I press the PowerButton for 2-3 seconds to show the options: Reboot/ShutDown/SafeMode it sounds the Messages notification !! How can I disable this?
Thanks in advance.
I still cannot disable it (without reset the phone)
I wonder if this notification is by default ....???

Dunno if you can remove it without root, but you can do it with root. You find system sounds at /system/media/audio/ui. There you should find the sound file regarding power menu, then delete it and reboot and that's it.
@zavag
I try to turn it on to reproduce your problem but In my case, I can not even find out how I can turn it on.
Can you tell me...
How you activated it?
On which build are you?
@Henkate
I think it would be rather embarrassing for Samsung if you can not even personalize a notification tone without major changes to the system.
By the way, even if I do not actually think of TouchWiz. For me it's just ugly and overbloat!
I really don't know how it activated. The phone is new and ... you know ... I was searching a lot of settings in order to setup as I like. I googled it ... I found some infos but it didn't work.
On the other hand I don't want to reset (and most I don't want to root it from now) because I spent a lot of hours to set it up.

@zavag
I try to turn it on to reproduce your problem but In my case, I can not even find out how I can turn it on.
Can you tell me...
How you activated it?
On which build are you?
@Henkate
I think it would be rather embarrassing for Samsung if you can not even personalize a notification tone without major changes to the system.

Know what you mean! I think if there is really no other way you are at minimum able to backup your settings in almost any app.
Maybe you like to inform about adb based backup solutions like declared here:
https://www.droidwiki.de/wiki/Backup/Ohne_Root
I also found a tool called Ultimate Backup on XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1844032
If you don't have access to a Linux or at least Windoof computer you can maybe search for how to use adb through androids buit in Linux command shell. Don't know if there is a workaround.
But in my opinion it is already poor from Samsung if one must operate such an effort in order to turn off a notification!

When I press the PowerButton for 2-3 seconds to show the options: Reboot/ShutDown/SafeMode it sounds the Messages notification !! How can I disable this?
Thanks in advance.
