Hello,
I have tried yesterday to share a big file via wifi direct between Nexus 4 and a Galaxy S3. I could establish a connection between the 2 devices, but there is no way to share a file without a third party app that have be install on the 2 devices!!! On the Nexus 4 there was no point "Wifi Direct" under "sharing" to send a file. On the S3 there was the point "Wifi direct". But If I send a file, there come "waiting for receiver", but on my Nexus 4 doesn't come any notification to confirm the recipience. Isn't wifi direct a standard, that should work between all devices?!
Is the really no possibility to share a file via wifi direct between 2 devices without 3rd party apps only with on board resources?
I am reallly little bit disappointed from the Nexus 4. OTG doesn't work, wifi direct can share and receive any files.
Works wifi direct on CM10.1? Can you send files there?
Regards
Greg

i think s-beam is proprietary. while it uses wifi direct.... it will only be compatible with other samsung devices. so yah... you would essentially need and app on both. i am just making an educated guess here and am only posting so ill be subbed and be able to keep track of what unfolds.
Yeah, I think Samsung's version is called s beam, I'm guessing the proprietary version is overriding WiFi direct.. Maybe try turning on both the NFC and WiFi direct at the same time? I'll experiment with my tablet and phone to see.

But S-beam is using NFC and wifi direct and both phones has to be very near together or not. I want send a file over a longer distance e.g 3 meters only over wifi direct.

i would stick wifi shoot on there and be done with it.
I have tried NFC to another nexus 4 device, but the issue is that it always uses Bluetooth as a default option for transfer.
Is there a way to change it to Wifi Direct??
I was wondering the same thing. NFC only uses bluetooth. Was trying to use file xpert hd and send files with wifi direct, didn't work. Any ideas anyone?
I have even tried using super beam app.
the connection times out when it is trying to enable the wifi direct. The app too words only with wifi hotspot option.
Hello All-
As a previous Samsung Note owner, I would use WiFi direct to send files to any other brand phone around me. With my LG G2, I connect with WiFi direct to a samsung/HTC phone and pick the file. The menu only displays the Smartshare beam option, and no WiFi direct option. When I click Smartshare beam the other phone disconnects and I can't send to any other brand other than LG. I have tried disabling smartshare beam and other things, it almost seems that LG has prevented us from using WiFi direct with other non lg phones. Anyone have any ideas or work around that don't involve downloading a third party app? Any help is appreciated.

I tried to dig in to the settings and managed to send files between Galaxy S2 and LG G2
Its a little difficult ...first connect the two devices with WiFi direct check if the file shring is turned ON then do the following
here are the steps
1. Go to settings on LG G2 and click networks
2. click share and connect
3. now click on the menu button at the bottom it shows option "use DLNA feature" click it
4. it opens up window showing two icons at the top 1) library 2) player
5. click on library icon and select the source device (example Galaxy S2) then click allow access
6. click on the player icon and select "my phone"
7. this you can access data from galaxy s2 on your LG G2.
8. If you choose LG G2 as your library and open any folder say pictures
9. open the picture and there is the option of upload at the bottom (or tap on the picture and you will see it)
10.click upload and select device you want to send it to (here its galaxy S2
If you have any more questions please free to ask hope this is helpful
11. accept the file on galaxy S2 or similar device and there it is the file gets pushed to your other device from LG G2
I tried everything but even with the description above it won't work to send data vie Wifi-direct to other phones (non LG).
Is this a bug or is it supposed to be like this? If so this was my last LG phone for sure!
I love wifi direct because it's the easiest way to exchange data with others nearby. Not being able to use it with my "Top-of-theLine" Smartphone really sucks and lets me miss my crappy S3 mini.
Any suggestions anybody? Please! :crying:
Try this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.majedev.superbeam

Samsung worked for me to other phones but not LG...
And Superbeam only works if the other person has superbeam installed as well if im right... thats just uncomfortable.
I'm just wondering if this is how it's supposed to be?
No update or solution for this?
I'm having this issues myself. I just don't think using Superbeam is a long-term solution to this problem.

Superbeam doesn't need a client and works with any device that has WiFi (it doesn't have to even have WiFi direct)

Sorry for necroing. This is also my concern on my g3.
Difference of wifi direct and superbeam is wifi direct capable devices can transfer files using wifi direct even they are in the middle of the desert. All it needs is 2 devices both connected to each other. No need for router.
Superbeam needed a working router, a host, a client to connect both devices to use wifi transfer. So you need to find a router, connect your devices before you can use superbeam.
Both wifi direct and superbeam use wifi speed tranfer rate.

Superbeam DOES NOT NEED AN ACCESS POINT for transferring files.
I am always using Superbeam for transferring and in almost none of the cases there is a router present. Even if there is I still choose WiFi Direct because my G2 WiFi capabilities are far more advanced than my surrounding Access Points.
If both Devices are WiFi Direct Enabled, SuperBeam can use that for transferring files (which is my preferred method all the time). So it leaves it to you whether want to use an access point or WiFi direct for transfer. So you wont't have any problem in your desert.
If one of devices doesn't support WiFi direct, Its OK, SuperBeam makes your device an access point.
If sender device doesn't support WiFi Direct, but it supports WiFi AP, same as above.
If sender doesn't even support WiFi AP, then yes you need a router and an access point for transferring files.
Please use Google and search a little bit before your posting false experiences. If you at least have looked at Super Beam Google Play page ...

Yes my mistake. Im using superbeam on both my devices, galaxy note pro 12.2 and lg g3. Note pro is working properly but my g3 is not so i have to install superbeam to be able to send files through wifi direct.
Lg remove their capabilities to send and receive files using the default wifi direct application. They remove it to give way to their SmartShare Beam which is only exclusive to lg devices.
You can use the option wireless storage and connect the other phone in lan using the app ES file explorer.
I have a Note 3 and an S4. I also have Panasonic and Nikon cameras with built-in WiFi. The issue is that the WiFi features of the cameras work by setting up a WiFi network in the camera and then connecting to it via WiFi on the phone. But, the Sammy's have a feature that looks for a live internet connection and drops back to mobile data if it doesn't find it. Since the camera doesn't provide internet (duh) the phones immediately disconnect and drop back to mobile data.
I know how to shut down that feature on the S4, but that takes a lot of steps and is a PITA to do several times during the day while out and about. On the Note 3, I haven't found a way to shut it off at all.
Ideally, we would be able to shut that feature off on specific connections ONLY - does anyone know of an app or something that would allow that? Or - a shortcut (widget?) that would give a toggle to that feature?
Have you tried turning off "Auto Network Switch" in the advanced settings under Wi-Fi? II have a galaxy camera which does something similar but I haven't tried connecting to it yet.

im trying to receive file from my brothers Galaxy S4 with NFC but nexus 7 wont detect or connect so that file transmission takes place
even i tried android beam same nothing happened even when touching devices backwards
is that a bug!
Wild guess, but did you maybe disable it?
Settings -> wireless & networks -> more -> NFC, Android Beam
And I think bluetooth also needs to be on.
NFC on the Nexus 7 is positioned just where the logo is and a bit above it on the back side.
Nfc works fine here on stock 4.4.2,however what you describe isn't so much Nfc as it is file transfers that Samsung hawks about but nobody else does (beaming files around over wifi using Nfc to initiate).
