TWRP or CWM recovery? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Which recovery would be good/better?
pros/cons?

They're both good
I prefer TWRP because of the way CWM backs up. It backs up using blobs so you always have to have those blobs on your phone, taking up space.
TWRP backs up the 'old' way and has the option to compress backups(not sure if cwm has this)

I prefer cwm touch which you can get from the site. Or you can flash the button version from rommanager
Twrp does work tho, but I've read issues with restoring backups.
Booting into recovery on the device in a way is messed up. The button combo method to enter using the bootloader hangs when not connected to a PC, so there are two options on getting into recovery.
A. Connect to a PC and use bootloader
B. With a working OS, reboot to recovery using an app such as rommanager or goomanager
If you ever flash a rom that won't boot, u need to connect to a PC and boot into recovery via bootloader (button combo).

I use TWRP and had successfully restored now a couple of times. Once was a complete device replacement where I restored the TWRP restore files from my workstation.
How I do my backups to ensure I can restore from a total loss.

Ah, I was curious if this bug still existed or not.
I'd go with CWM, quite stable, easy to use, and you can flash the touch recovery, speeds it up.

Thanks, I read somewhere that if you go into system/ and rename recovery-from-boot.p to recovery-from-boot.bak, fixes the bootloop...can anyone confirm this... thank in advance

Try it. Bootloader issue still exists regardless.

I'm a TWRP guy all the way. I have never had an issue restoring a backup, and the ability to compress my nandroid is invaluable.

TWRP or CWM?

Hey guys, I've been using ClockworkMod Recovery and I've always loved it on my Droid X but it seems like the blob system is actually taking up more space on my sdcard than it should. I was wondering what you all thought of nandroid backup sizes on TWRP compared to CWM? Thanks!
TWRP offers a compression option to shrink the size of your nands. TWRP is also easier to navigate IMO. Try it and see if its something you like. You can always flash back to clockwork if you don't like it.

TWRP here also. I like the UI of TWRP better.

I just realized that CWM has a problem on Nexus 7. Can't delete old backups!! You can't delete files in the CWM backup folder thru file explorer, terminal with SU or ADB. For that, and so many other performance reasons, I dropped CWM faster than drunk girl in stilettos. TWRP is what I use on my Galaxy S2 and I just love it. You can queue up several zips for install in order, like: 1) TDJ cache wipe, 2) install ROM, 3) install Gapps, 4) TDJ cache wipe again. then, come back 2 minutes later, and you're ready to reboot. ALso, TWRP has a file manager in recovery, so you can actually delete those annoying backup folders that CWM won't even let you delete. TWRP FTW.
I also notice that TWRP has the nice backup options for "System/Boot/Data" backup only. So I can clean backup my rom without all those apps(which is HUGE)
guess I'll need to put back TWRP in my Nexus 7 again.
TWRP. I tried the latest CWM but even the touch version is not that good for me. Also the De duplication backup of CWM is just not quite right in my opinion. In my experience, leaving thousand files in the sd card is causing performance problems compared to just few large files.

If I flash Clockworkmod Recovery in Rom Manager and then Reboot into Recovery from Rom Manager, I go right to cwm recovery. I have tested making and deleting nandroid backups there and it works just fine. My backups consist of a folder containing 5 files including an md5 checksum so I don't know what people are talking about with 'thousands of files'. I think the people criticizing CWM don't know how to use it. I just make sure I flash Clockworkmod Recovery in Rom Manager before I Reboot into Recovery. Works every time. I don't use the Touch version, just plain old Rom Manager v5.0.2.1 and CWM 6.0.1.0.
I had installed CWM first, but now I changed to TWRP and I like it much more. With an USB-stick connected you have the possibility to backup / restore ROMs from there directly, which makes much more sense than backing up to internal memory. Also the other options provided for install / backup / restore are well done. Really nice work!

I switch between TWRP and CWM.

TWRP
Big icon easy to use.
CWM, in all honesty, I unlocked and rooted and have never gone back into recovery. Because this is the first device I've ever owned where I didn't feel the need to flash a ROM yet! ( key word,YET) I use my Galaxy S 2 for my flashing addiction.

Install twrp?

So I am running cm10.1, cwm touch recovery and the cwm app for management. I would like to switch to twrp so that my backup files will be accessible to move to and from my PC. When I try to install twrp from the cwm app it just gives me a message that the app is configured to work with my current recovery, and backs out. I did pay for full use.
How do I get switched? Thanks.

Nevermind, i used Nexus 7 ToolKit to do it...
all you had to do was fastboot flash the recovery image or use goomanager.....SMH. toolkits have made people utterly helpless.

[Q] Recovery lost?

Hello everyone! Think that I did something kinda stupid today..but not sure. I have installed cwm recovery (philz version, latest) but today I was transfering over a backup to my pc (I removed it from phone to pc), well that was what I thought..(the file was TWRP, since it was a twrp nandroid backup and I had twrp before cwm) so later, when I tried to go to recovery, I couldn't, I tried with FreeGee, but nothing happened...so does this mean that I have lost my recovery? I tried to put the files back on phone where they was but it doesn't seem like that have helped...
So any other methods to get into recovery mode? And have I lost it by deleting a twrp file containing a backup and a twrps. file on 2kb?
P.s when I look into the TWRP folder, I don't have the twrps file....is that the problem, and what is that file? Is it loki or something?
P.S 2: My phone is working fine..
Anyone?
If you're still rooted, you could install Goo Manager, which will allow you to install a recovery.

I do have root, and I am running cloudystock 1.2 (kitkat), but can I just install a recovery since I am on a stock kitkat rom? Think I have done it now.....
What ROM did you have when you first installed cwm?
Sent from my VS980 4G using xda app-developers app
I had stock 4.2.2 rom when I first installed recovery, but I overwrited my twrp recovery and installed cwm (that too on stock 4.2.2 rom
Try installing Quick Boot (free in the Play Store.) It provides an easy way to boot into recovery. This should show whether CWM or TWRP are still on your phone.
