Hey everyone,
My nexus 4 screen shows a perfect grid of silver dots when I am in sunlight. It seems to happen at certain angle. Is anyone else experiencing this? Thanks
It's normal, it's just the touch screen digitiser - same with my One X
Thanks for the quick reply! Good to hear there isn't a problem.
Yeah that's just the digitizer. It has something to do with LG moving the screen closer to the glass so the digitizer is more visible than past phones
The only thing that sucks about that is if the screen breaks so does the digitizer

What about when the screen is off? mine has grid of dots on the screen is off and i can see it also when it is on. thought first it is a stain under the screen protector but it is not.
Thats LCD IPS for ya
I just went to a Telus store to get a new micro SIM, and looked at the screens of the HTC One X+, Galaxy S3 and Note2, couldn't see this grid pattern on any of them. I don't see it on mine if I'm in a room with no sunlight, but soon as there is sunlight its very noticeable. Walking outside soon as I take my phone out its all I can see. I'm worried I have something wrong or defective.

If that is normal take a photo of your phone with the same thing. I have not found any hi-res images of the Nexus 4 with this sort of pronounced visible grid pattern.
I contacted Google Play support via chat and they said it's not normal and I should RMA. But I'm still not 100% confident Its a defect and my replacement won't just be the same.
that is normal, there is actually two patterns, the silver dots and one with rectangle boxs like lol, not sure how to describe it. your phone is fine.
Its normal. I had the HTC inspire 4g, and the lg optimus g and they had the same thing.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Then why does no other phone have this visible? I compared it side by side with a HTC One X+, Galaxy S3, Note2 and none of them had any visible grid of tiny rectangles.
None of the photos I've seen of the Nexus 4 screen have any of this visible. Its not just with sunlight, any light makes it visible, almost has a textured look.
If this is normal then I'm really disappointed in this phone, seems like a glaring difference between the it and the other popular phones, that's why i think its not normal, i never saw any reviews mention anything like this.
If i take a photo of my phone at either of these angles I could clearly see the grid, but these 2 random photos show nothing

http://bestboyz.de/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Photos-Google-Nexus-4-4.jpg
I can sometimes in the correct light and angle see the shinny silver dots, this is no what i'm talking about and not what my photo clearly shows.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-eA4J8jHPBw0/UQhCP9-jZnI/AAAAAAABczQ/etrGO4JDT-c/s845/DSCN0964.JPG
The pattern is a grid of rectangles in this type of shape (excluding dots)

As usual, customer support is useless.
Normal due to NO gap in between digitizer and glass paneling. LG did this intentionally and is why you can see it. Other manufacturers DONT do it due to being able to see digitizer. LG did it intentionally and it is normal.

Also the reaspning behind WHY digitizer is useless after glass paneling breaking versus SIIIs paneling and others still being functional. Because the glass paneling doesn't automatically break digitizer when breaking because of the gap.

I said I can see it when the screen is on, even with a tilt as little as 5 degrees. My friend who also has a Nexus 4 says his is not that noticeable and can only see it with a much greater tilt degree.
If this is normal why did the Google tech support say its not normal and told me to warranty my phone? But I know the tech support is probably not great and they might just say that to anything. But I sent them the photo of my screen and that's what they said.
So I really don't know what to think, people in this thread say its normal, but Google support says its not...
I really don't want to go through the hassle of sending in my phone for warranty if I just get back a phone with the same quirk.
As I posted before, why don't some others post some angled photos of there screens in daylight.
Who knows why they say that. If you believe them then go to town and quit asking us why. Believe them and get a replacement with the same thing lol. People ask questions on here and then get an answer and don't believe anything they get as a response haha

Is it there when the screen is off?
If not then it's not scratches. I think its an AMOLED thing. I notice it when my SGS2 freezes on a black screen. But not there when powered down or back up again.

I don't see any spots or ink marks on my GS2 at all. But seems like a lot of the GS3's are having these spots.
Some have exchanged their phones for those with a lot less of of those markings.

I read somewhere that this is a residual issue caused by the bonding glue they use t to attach the glass, they should fade as the glue dries, but keep any eye on it and nuke 'em if it doesn't!
Yeh galaxy nexus has a similar thing its the amoled display some of the pixals are not turning fully of, I think that was the conclusion .
But only noticeable in very dark room with the screen black and when your eyes adjust. Could be wrong without a pic I can't say.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I think its an inherent flaw with AMOLED panels. It looks like patches of the screen do not go as dark as the rest of the screen.
Some screens are brighter than others in general though, among the same phone. This Nexus was brighter than another one I had at the same time, at both lowest and highest settings, and had less black dots on black screen, presumably because the screen was brighter overall.
Doesn't mean to say I won't check for the problem before I purchase though

The left side of my screen near the center makes a strange noise when I press down on it, almost like adhesive lifting.
This thread title has defects
No I'm sorry. I don't believe I have any dead pixels. Mind you, I didn't search for long. What freaked me out however was that I never got the USB drivers from the SDK. I'm good now though, rooted and runnin'.

The few bits of information about people having screens coming loose has me all paranoid. Mine makes a slight noise if the push on the lower right side of the device. But close examination makes it appear not to be the screen but the rear cover has a tiny bit of play (assume it is a slightly less than ideal retainer clip). I don't expect it to be an issue but if it does turn into one but the time I probably need to RMA it they should be further into the production cycle and hopefully past small issue like that.
There's already a thread like this

I'm not sure I would call one dead pixel "very minor". Could absolutely ruin things depending on where it is.

This is what I'm afraid of ... had the first transformer and that device was just rubbish .
What makes me thinking is that all the issues I had on transformer are showing up with nexus .
1. Loose screen (in transformer at first no problem after a week I could feel it being loose when grabbed . After 3 weeks screen collapsed and from the top of the edge to the screen surface there was like 2-3mm difference
2. Light bleeds ... had it all over the screen. That was an IPS screen.
3. Screen not stuck properly top right corner . When looked at the screen under about 160 degrees (pretty much looking at the screen when its flat) the actual screen was off by 3-4 mm from the main glass and could see the light coming through
4. Dead pixel. One but that's it .
And that was just one single device ... makes me wonder how Asus build this one when I read all the comments

Yep sorry to confirm, but I have the "loose screen issue" with my Nexus 7.
It's a device from Google I/O, so it could be that this this batch was put together in a hurry, and that caused the defect, but it's still a bummer, that it's not even a month old, and this happens. There's no way of returning it, because I'm in the EU...
Oh yeah, it's one of the few ones with a white back. The white is rubbing off where it sits on the table and where you hold it with your hand. The base black is slowly emerging.
I hope the ones people actually buy will be better manufactured...
Just got my third n7. I've had a c60 model and a c70 model both with the screen lift issue. Finally got a replacement to the replacement today and was delighted to see no problems...until I turned it on.
Immediately the screen looked dimmer.
I've now done a side by side comparison, checking whether it is the auto light sensor but its dimmer on all settings.
Has anyone else noticed this? Is it a result of different screens they are using or have I just got another duff model?
I've attached a picture showing both on the lowest light setting so hopefully you can see I'm not just being paranoid.

Man that sucks looks like you might have to replace it again...
I just went thru same thing except my C6 screen was good, battery was bad. 2nd one was C7 and that had the lift, I just exchanged it today (got mine at Gamestop) for another C7 which seems good so far.
I was being a bit stupid actually because I had a thought that the c70 thing meant they were using different screens now, but just after I posted I realised that both those in the picture are c70s.
I suppose this means that it is a genuine fault.
Perhaps I'm being really unlucky but I think I might get a refund from google and go buy it from a proper shop where I can have a look before buying

It's not uncommon for a manufacturer to use different panels. Just do a search on the HTC sensation having different panels, also the HTC MyTouch 4G, and I believe the Xoom when it first came out had panels from two different manufacturers
That's more worrying. That might mean its pot luck whether people get a good one or not. You would think that Google/Asus would be aiming for consistency.
Its a shame really because this is a cracking device if only I could get a decent one. This is also the first one I've had where the power button and volume buttons are nice and clicky!

Yes I had this!. Believe it or not I believe it's the brighter one that is defective. I've had 4 different nexus 7s now, and only one of them was significantly brighter than all the rest, even on lowest setting. At first I thought it was better, till I tried reading in the dark and found it was super uncomfortable. I installed lux, which helped dim it, but since it's a filter it made my eyes hurt having it, I still don't know why. On top of that, I noticed it had light bleed on the left side.
Somewhere on these forums I posted a picture of the bright one next to one of the other ones, just like you did, I will try to find the pic and come back here and post it.
I just got my replacement for the ultra bright one, and it is dimmer on lowest setting just like the others, but based on what I've seen this is how it should be. I think I am finally done with the exchange game, this one has a slightly raised left screen, but no squishyness or sponginess, no light bleed or dead pixels, and not much flickering even at lowest brightness on Google maps. I'm keeping this one

OK, maybe its not as simple as I first thought then. Although I would say that my overwhelming impression of this new one is that it is too dim and I've never thought that from looking at my previous ones or ones that friends have. Certainly my previous ones are not painful to use in the dark.
Its difficult to say without lining them all up and comparing but there is a possibility here that you had a defective model that was too bright, I have a defective model that is too dim and all the others are just right - the goldilocks models
and this is exactly what i imagined happening as soon as i heard asus was making the tablet, sigh, i still bought one, and i will exchange it when the screen bothers me enough, but I am afraid of the result of going through the same level of nightmare

True enough. I've got an original transformer which I had 4 attempts to get a fully working, non light bleeding, non creaking, keyboard holding charge, speakers working model. I eventually gave up and settled for the last one they sent me which still had light bleed and an I'll fitting shell. The charger packed up when it was a year and a week old so at least I know it won't bother me again.
Not sure what happened to Asus, their netbooks used to be really well built and last forever, I've got a six year old one that the other half uses every day. You would have thought that it would be cheaper for them to invest a bit in quality control than all this shipping of replacements and reconditioning all the faulty ones

I think you are right. If you think it's too dim in general, and not just because you put them side by side at lowest brightness, then that is not good. It's frustrating but if you are willing, keep trying. I think I finally found one that I can live with, after four tries!

Hi all,
The nexus 7 is my first foray into the world of android, and I'll have to say I'm impressed. My iPad sits at home these days, while my nexus goes everywhere with me! Its a fantastic tab!
I seem to have an almost perfect device, I'm only getting a miniscule amount of screen lift on the left middle, its only, I wouldn't even say its its a mm, its only ever so slightly above the bezel.
So considering that, and everything else is perfect, and the store I bought from would ask me to send t back to Asus, is it worth all that trouble considering that its only a small lift, or will it get worse and one day it will pop up and the screen will shatter into a billion tiny expensive bits?
I know I can only decide, but looking for your comments
Thanks!

Well I've had slight lift like you and it hasn't got any worse or damaged the screen in any way.
Its just whether it bothers you enough to go through the hassle of sending it back.
The store should replace it themselves though since that's where you bought it from.

I'm in the same situation. It's not big, but at the same time it's a little bothersome. I tried some of the fixes but they only worked temporarily for me. I decided to call Google and they are going to send me another tablet, however, they are backordered again (I called 3days ago, still hasn't shipped). Now that I've had some time to think about it, I'm actually kind of scared that the new 1 will be worse or something, but we shall see. The rest of my tablet works fine, it's absolutely wonderful.

I've circled the offending area.
Although TECK's lift is minor, it would be easy to spot if the photo were taken from a lower perspective. Checking from the right side is useful because it's easy to see where the black display is raised enough to eclipse the thin, silver line of the left bezel. The perspective in his photo is too high to accentuate the flaw because you can peer over the lifted glass and see the bezel.
Here are some other examples.
I honestly think this is an issue with the Nexus 7 in general, and that some people notice it and some don't (and some just don't get it warm enough for the side to pop up). I have it but I am certain that I wouldn't have even noticed if I hadn't read about it on the internet, so I try to ignore it. Unless it's obvious or gets in the way in any way, I'd say make do, this is the sort of downside to expect from a tablet half the price of the competition.

Lol, I just tried to take a photo of mine, couldn't see it in the piccy, but I wouldn't have even noticed it if I hadn't been looking.
Its something I can live with, if it looks like its getting worse, its going back but at the moment, I'm a happy bunny

Don't fret. The Nexus 7 with minor lift is still best in its class, and flawless ones do exist.
Worst case scenario, there is a very, very low risk of the glass cracking during normal use, but if you're under the Play store warranty I think you should be covered for that. Just to be on the safe side, however, I would encourage anyone with screen lift to document it with pictures and/or video. That way, in the unlikely event that it ever does cause a problem, you'll have evidence to support your claim.
The really low quality attachment I posted before, the middle one, was my own Nexus 7. I tried three times for a flush screen, and that was the best of the three. At this point I'm wishing I'd kept it, so take that for what it's worth. I returned the third and final one because there was distortion when pressed along the left side.
Here are a couple photos by users with better luck than myself. They do exist.
I took a photo of the screen lift just in case the thing cracks and the store blames me

I have had my Verizon 64 GB Note 5 for about 6 days now and since day 1 I have noticed that the screen color when on a white background is not uniform. My phone appears to have a section that has a red hue to it around the left side and more of a blueish hue to the right side of the screen. It is very noticeable on anything with a white background. I seem to notice it the most when I am reading text. I have gone back to the Verizon store I got the phone from and looked at their demo model and it seems to have the same issue. I also went to my local Best Buy and looked at 3 other Note 5's and all except one of Best Buy's seemed to have the issue.
Pull up a white background on your Note 5. Do you see this? I am going to take my phone back and swap it out this weekend, But with so many that I have seen with the issue I am not confident that the new one will be any better.
EDIT: Added poll
Got some pics of mine. NOTE!!!! Pictures do slightly exaggerate the issue

I have it on adaptive but I can see it on all modes.
Most likely a defective screen, go get it warrantied. I have seen display defects for all brands.

I wonder if a bad batch got shipped to my area? It's strange that 4/5 of the phones that I looked at had the issue. This is making me hopeful that I will get a good one when I go swap it out
Yes I have the same issue, imported phone from Singapore.
My 32gb Verizon model has this, except it's my right half of the screen that has the reddish hue. I'm planning on swapping it for a 64gb before my 14 days are up anyway, or else I'd have already returned it. It's incredibly annoying while reading text.
It's like the matrix effect. Once you've taken the blue pill you can't ignore it. I see tinting on every single amoled device I look at now.

Ha! I have been looking at all my co workers phones and I do see uneven back lighting on almost all of them but none have 2 distinctly different colors on each side of the screen like the Note 5 does. I could handle the uneven back lighting but the 2 colors on the Note 5 make me cringe every time I look at it for more than a few seconds. My co worker's iPhone 6 plus has a fairly uneven backlight from left to right but there are no specific colors illuminated more than others so it's easy to ignore at least for me.

I don't see any discoloration on my screen. Did I get the only good unit?

I will see if I can get a picture of it but I am not sure if a camera would pick it up. It's fairly subtle. Either way it's still annoying.
Deleted since I thought I had discoloration but didn't after having a few co-workers take a look at my phone.

You know what's weird. I owned a Note 4 on 3 of the 4 big carriers and the AT&T one was the only one that was bearable. It seems like its not as bad on the Korean models, which seem to be exclusive to AT&T.
This is what it looks like on mine
I have the 64gb White from AT&T and I cannot see this at all on mine. Colors look fairly cool throughout, not seeing any discoloration or even uneven backlighting.
no discolouration from what i can tell. though i do notice the colours (or WB) of the panel are different than my S6e panel which is warmer in all Display Modes (at full brightness).
