If you downloaded root but it didnt actually root your phone, this may be your prob

My problem was that I would download SuperOneClick and it would not give me actual root. The SuperUser icon was in my app drawer but if I tried to use any apps that required root access they wouldnt let me. When I opened Super Manager and clicked "Enable Root Access" a popup would come up and it would say something like "Your ROOT image will not work" or something like that.
The problem was this:
I found out that I had downloaded the most recent version of SuperOneClick. This version will not give root if you had the official 2.2. update. You needed to download the 1.5.5 version.
I hope this will help anyone who made the same mistake as me.
anybody? im freaking out since no one else has had this problem.
Try enable USB debugging
Settings > Applications > USB Debugging > Enable.
You should repost the OP with the solution in case someone else has the problem, if not people will search in vain.

good idea. Ill do it now.
Thanks alecjake, I am on ka6 and have heard there were issues with the latest SuperOneClick. Odd that an older version can root froyo but the newer version can't. Very helpful advice.

One thing you also want to do, is after using superoneclick is to reboot. That way root actually works.

I also have problems with rooting my andriod, I ran Titanium Backup but it required root access to work, so I downloaded z4root and universal root apk, it says that my phone is rooted but still Titanium Backup cant detect any root access.
Also my Link2sd App(app2sd alike) also requires root, I think I rooted my phone but still doesn't work. A noob like me really need your help guys.. thanks in advance..
BTW i am running 1.6 andriod firmware.
Easiest way I've found is to use AIO Vibrant Toolbox. I'm on my phone so I can't link it but just go to the development section and look for the post with the program name in the thread title. It's super easy to root with it. Just follow the included directions!

1.6? do you have a t959 vibrant? if you do, you need to get to stock 2.1 JFD, then you can follow these instructions:

or go with the AIO toolbox which is more user friendly

Root without using usb port

Hey everybody I was wondering if it's possible to root a phone without connecting it to a usb port? My usb port is broken and can't be recognized by my computer . At the moment I'm in rooted 2.2 and want to upgrade to 2.3

I'm wondering if its a typo.. Did you say you are rooted on 2.2?.. If so flash a rooted gingerbread rom and you should be good, plenty if options in the development thread
If you're already rooted why do you want to root again? Confused. If you want 2.3 just flash a 2.3 rom
We're comin from a pure power source.

If you are all ready rooted use a SD card reader and transfer the files to the card then put it back in the phone. Or just directly download to your phone. Just flash a rooted 2.3.3 rom. There are plenty to choose from. Do not flash stock 2.3.3 and then reroot. That is a waste of time and just plain dumb imho.

If you are already rooted, just flash a new rom. Otherwise, there are apks out there that supposedly root your phone, such as gingerbreak or Z4root. Whether or not they work on the Evo, I don't know. Do some research on those, and see what you can find.
Just make sure it explicitly says that it works on your phone!!!!! Never EVER act on a guess or a hunch. You may end up with a paperweight.

yeah. you said exactly what I was going to say. lol. but the USB port can be fixed. I'd say, just fix the port. :-D then again,. lol. I'm an electronic engineer... guess not everyone knows how to do stuff like putting it back together. lol. oh well. I personally stayed with the rooted stock. cause the only thing I do is use the wireless on business trips. I NEVER over use. just basic fb and email. NO TORRENTS! lol. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

[Q] Can anybody help me?

hello im wondering if there is a way to root the atrix 4g 2.3.4 without a computer. I have tried other sites but they dont give me the right solution so if and of you can it would be great.
I don't think so. I think I read somewhere they got a "1-click" method working but it still requires a computer.

This is what I read. Can anyone confirm this?

To my knowledge, there is no un-tethered root program. You have to be able to remote access the phone's internal memory.
You can easily root your ATRIX running Gingerbread, but without out a computer is tough.

If you dont have CWM - no.
If you have CWM - there's a CWM root file somewhere around the forums, it worked for me

I would really like to use a custom rom but im a bit scared that i would break my phone.. Is it hard to install the Aurora ICS? Is it ok for daily use? Also i dont know if im the only one but when i try to install almost any app from play store i get a" couldent install app on USB memory or SD card" error. Phone is unrooted.

just follow the guides and you will be fine..
some apps need rooted phones to work properly so you need at least to root your phone then you are fine...

Downgrade from 2.3.5 back to 2.2.2
1) Download U8800 V100R001C00B138SP04 (Overseas General) Android 2.2.2 from HERE.
2) Extract the "dload" folder and copy it (along with its contents) to the ROOT of the SD Card.
3) Turn on your U8800 while holding [VOL-] and [VOL+] and the Android 2.2.2 install should start.
4) Once finished you should be back to 2.2.2.
5) If you phone does not boot correctly power on phone while holding [VOL+] to boot into recovery and Reset to factory defaults.
6) Delete the "dload" folder from the SD Card.

you can root your phone on 2.2 too just follow this guide for that

Btw when i upgraded to 2.3 i used this one here and it went pretty smoothly.
Well now i installed Aurora 4.1 how do i install the update 1a now? Also i have Saunalahti how do i do that with the connectbot? Didnt really understand it :S Calling is working atm i think.. but mobile internet doesnt
Download connectbot and open, Click ssh left side bottom and select local and use a nickname when the terminal opens type
su
setprop persist.eons.enabled 0
And reboot.
To install update 1a just flash it with cwm.
I tried the connectbot but do i have to save it somehow after i wrote that or just home and reboot? Also i've checked my APN settings they are as they should for Saunalahti :/ Got an R over my signal idk if im roaming :/ im at home internet wont work *_* Im on Aurora 4.1 atm u think it would help if i flashed 4.1 update 1a?
You can try but since you had this prob from the official update you better try reinstalling the official again
Also try this see if your net connects when you turn on data roaming if it does that means you are on roaming some how
Sent from my U8800 using xda app-developers app
umm what official should i try then? Im from finland so.. Is it just to do the exact same thing as when i upgraded from 2.2.1? Or do i need to go back to 2.2.1 first or sumfin like that?
first try a master reset if not helpful then just try doing it without downgrading if that doesn't work try it with a different official update and if that too doesn't work then try downgrading and upgrading again.
How do i do a master reset? Also i saw the downgrade guide on that root ,CWM etc.. but the link is dead
settings>backup&reset>Factory data reset

Broken Usb port, how to root?

Hey all,
As the title says I currently have an U8800 with a broken usb port, so I don't know how to root it. After I broke it I tried to go to warranty but all they did was deny me and erase the ICS aurora I had. So I'm left with 2.3.5, a broken usb port and no root.
I would like to know, are there any methods not involving USB so I could root my phone in order to install CWR?
My best regards,
Rooting official 2.3.X is not possible without USB.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using Tapatalk 2
I think that it is possible, but to root without usb connection is a "uber" job and i think that no one will try to write how to do that, becouse it,s a ugly way. If you still want to do that you should look at oficial ics rooting methot and with some diferences try to do it on your phone with shell comands (the comands should be different becojse you will do that from phone, not from computer). How diferent you should find you're self. Now you got the way, so just find out how to do that it isn'n imposible.

Ok, I've downgraded to 2.2.2, where should I go now? Gingerbreak to root, and try to manually install cwr?
EDIT: CWR done, if I upgrade to 2.3.5 am I going to lose the recovery? What's the path to aurora in which I don't lose the recovery?
Experimental alternative to z4root

This app similar to z4root may or may not work. Use at own risk. Always do a disk image backup.
Thank you all for the help. Currently I'm on CM7 .32 kernel, may I update directly to Aurora?
