Hi Guys,
Im new here so pardon my thread of any inconsistencies.
I bought galaxy note II about a month ago, it was working good until today.
Problem - For some reason the lock screen and menu have started rotating which i havent made any change or anything. If i turn off the screen rotation I can't access landscape mode to use texting or gps or anything or even apps, as they stay in potrait mode. And If i turn it on, the whole screen goes landscape mode.
I don't know if its an update from samsung or a system glitch.
I have tried re-calibrating the gyro but no help, Also put my phone in odin mode and clear cache as well but no awail.
XDA are well known to hunt these problems down, Can anyone please tell me how to get rid of this?
Thanks
Ben

Hey mate! Try Ultimate Rotation Control app. I hope it helps.
yes have the same prob
I think that we must have a gesture for rotate MANUALY screen.
Automatic rotation is horrible in use.
I always look for an gesture application to do that :/
I have similar problem. When I turn off automatic BACKLIGHT it will not turn screen, so I am turning auto backlight on, rotate device and then auto backlight off and it stays in landscape. It doesn't happen very often but is annoying. Try auto backlight on/off.
update to 4.3 OFFICIAL ROM and that problem it's fixed...

Hey.
My Droid pro is barely a month old and Im experiencing difficulty in getting the backlight of the physical keyboard to light up when its dark.
If i tilt it upwards, it comes on sometimes but this too is very random with no specific response to any particular type of lighting.
Its ALWAYS on in the day but never in the night
From what I've read, turning off automatic brightness setting is a solution but it has not worked for me - my phone has been on a custom brightness setting since day 1.
HELP!
do u have a screen protector installed?
No screen protector. that would solve the problem?
I just noticed this problem as well while I was trying to text in bed with the lights off. Couldn't see a damn thing
keyboard light problem
I have the same issue,i wished motorla would do a update and fix with a setting for that,in the meantime,I always hit the on off button and then it stays on for a bit
Not sure but...
I never had this problem until I downloaded am alternate keyboard. i installed swype and this problem started. Have not uninstalled to see if it fixes the problem
If your rooted then try installing keyboard backlight from the market. It works great for me.
Ive never had a problem with my backlight. Night or day.
backlight
I too have the same problem,im like the others, wished motorola would fix this and make it adjustable, i have a semi fix til they do fix for good, when u notice it is not on,reach up and just push the power button for the screen to temporarily shut off, then push power button again, use slider to open screen and then it should be lit up then, thanks
Any try the backlight app and see if that works?
which app is it? a link would be nice
if you have a screen protector, use a hole punch to cut a hole in it above the light sensors.
turn off automatic brightness.
with the backlight on, but keys off, cover the two sensors for a few seconds with your palm, that always gets my keyboard lights to come on.
On the DROID pro there is also a light sensor in the upper left corner.
I experienced the same issue that u did. I then put my finger over the light sensor and the backlight came on.
It seemed to stay on from that point forward in the dark.

1. are you rooted, and did you get the specific app mentioned.
2. did you completely miss where TWO of us have mentioned that covering the light sensor briefly usually turns the lights back on?

Thank you!!! it works great now with that app.
hey all, recently added GB to my BF's non-rooted DPro and he's having this issue as well.
Looks like the best, and only, fix may be to root and add that app from the market?
Upon covering the sensor at the top the light does come back on, but only for a second or two. Have messed with the display and brightness and power settings but nothing seems to keep the backlight on when typing.

Ever since as long as I can remember, my phones brightness will dim to a brightness so dark you just can't see it. Even if you manually set the brightness, once you lock and wake the screen, it's fine then suddenly switches to dark.
I've used multiple ROMs and they all do it. Is it a device issue, or could it be a kernel issue? I've not screwed with kernels so I don't know if it could be it. If it's a device issue, I'll be getting a replacement ASAP.
Any help is appreciated!
Now that I'm able to Google, I realize it's a common problem with the S4.

The only time I had the screen go dim like you describe is I remember once following a phone call. It goes dark when you put the handset to your ear like it's supposed to, and lights back up when I pull it away from my head. I was stepping out of a truck into the broad daylight when I tried to hang up my phone, I couldn't see the screen very well. The other party ended the call, and my screen timed out while I was squinting at it. I pushed the home button and it lit right back up nice.
You got something going on, and if you tried all those different roms, say... can you nandroid back to stock? Did you try that?
I'd try everything I could on the outside chance of repair instead of replacement. If you get a replacement you might be stuck with that MF3 where you cannot install a custom recovery.

Mf3? Is that something new with the S4s to prevent custom ROMs?
It does not go pitch black. It goes very dim every time I wake the device. If you Google S4 screen dimming it's a wide problem.
Once you wake it, it's fine for 2 seconds and dims quite dark. It is not screen timeout/sleep/etc since I can still see the screen.

I'm on MDJ and don't get any auto dimming of any sorts. Auto brightness is off, brightness controls about 1/3 brightness (indoors), but Power Saving mode is on with all three options on.
My S4 is MDL. I found out the problem (More than likely) was the Paranoid Android ROM. I was on ver. 3.69 and since switched to CM 10.2 Nightlies, latest as of today, and no screen dimming. I will install my usual apps and use it as normal and if it happens, it's probably an app. However, the only apps I use are ones such as SwiftKey, LightFlow, ASTRO, Chrome, and Dashclock.
I'm on stock MDL. It has only been occurring since I upgraded from MDB 3 days ago, and is a huge PITA because brightness controls are unresponsive during this time - I go into settings to adjust brightness since I have removed all the brightness controls from the notification panel as they've always worked just fine, and turn off auto brightness, scale it all the way to max, and it is still dim as crap.... Only fix I've seen is to reboot, which is obviously not ideal in most situations when I need to wake the device! I'm using STOCK kernel, STOCK ODEXED ROM as well, nothing crazy should be going on to screw with brightness settings being unresponsive either!

Do you by chance use Light Flow?
I solved the problem. I had "lcd_backlight" control flipped on in the settings of Light Flow. It fixed it. To tell if it's an app problem, just factory reset and try, once you boot up, to lock and wake the device to see if it happens. If it doesn't, it's an app problem more than likely, or even a general setting. Troubleshoot for the win!

I do use Light Flow, but I don't have either one of the LCD Backlight controls enabled, never have and never will, so I don't know how that could be affecting my phone at all.... That's a good start for some, but not for me, unfortunately! Good catch though

I had this issue before on my Galaxy S3. I ended up replacing the front glass because of a dead pixel. Come to find out I had a sensor issue and that was causing my brightness auto going to whatever level it wanted.
Perhaps you're experiencing that too. Haven't heard or read of any sensor issues yet with the S4 but you could be the lucky winner!
Ok guys so i have this problem that started occuring only a couple days ago. Before that ive had no problems with my phone, but now when i turn the screen off/on it flickers green-yellow-ish. This has so far only happened when turning the screen on/off. It doesnt happen all the time though, it comes and goes. Any ideas? Has this happened to any of you? Thanks in advance
Hello, I would be happy to help you but have the same issue.
You can try anyway to disable all automatic screen luminosity settings and try to change luminosity.
It's not a fix, only a workaround.
Running a screen filter at lowest settings could help. Or using lux app to change the automatic brightness to pass beyond troubled screen brightness may help. Only ideas if factory reset doesn't help. It's a hardware issue otherwise.

I have the same problem
Did I have to change the screen or what ?????
Hello everybody,
I have this problem since few months:
Sometimes out of nowhere the screen starts flashing (like turning up brightness to 100%) for a split second when I touch it. After a while it stops. I have no idea where it comes from or how to replicate it. Sometimes restarting the device helps, sometimes not.
Automatic brightness is turned off.
Can anyone think of the origin of this problem or how to solve it?
It is a A2017G and on 7.1.1 with A2017GV1.2.0B05 but was the same with the last update (B04?).
Anything I could think of would be SystemUI Tuner, but I only use it to hide the NFC icon.
Thanks!

Thanks! I turned it off now, hopefully it won't occure anymore.
Anyone else have this issue.
Does not work for me when using YouTube and wanting to switch from portrait to landscape.
Very frustrating
Just me then?
I'm sure you checked the auto-rotate is enabled.
On my side, I also have to manually press the full screen icon on YouTube app from time to time like 80% of the time, the rotation is automatic
Yes have it enabled. Have tried switching on and off as well as switching phone on and off.
I've noticed also now that if I'm looking at photos they do not rotate either
I'm having the same issue. I have reset the setting multiple times, restarted phone, and tested the gyroscope ability. It just doesn't auto rotate anymore & it's definitely annoying.
