So I was playing around with lightflow on my nexus 4 and I noticed that the red LED is kind of prominent when the notification light pulses when I have any color selected with red in it. There's a red glow at the top of the notification light when it pulses, which makes blue half purple, yellow half red-orange, and white pink/purple. The picture is kind of bright, but you can kind of see what I mean (it's supposed to be yellow). It's a lot more visible in real life... Does anyone else have this too?

Looks yellow to me brotato.
But yes, I think it's normal to get glimpses of other colors. Happened on gnex and gs3 too.
-Sent from my Nexus 7.-
How do you even configure the LED I couldn't find a way to do this (never had a phone with notification LED before)
In fact I haven't seen the notification LED at all, I can't test SMS messages because my Micro-SIM isn't here yet, but all other kind of notifications had no effect.
Where do I find the LED settings
EDIT: Ok, It seems like there is a notification if I receive a mail (gmail), but not for all notifications. Is this normal?
(If you can tell me how it works I can check if I have a red glow)

Slightly topic related question. (apology for slight double post - question sits better here - not worth another thread)
Q1 : When charging I have no lights/led indicators illuminated (on both stock and aokp) - is this the normal? - intended behavior?
I'm used to HTC/Samsung, that tend charge at one colour (amber/red) and then display another colour when full (green). This would seem sensible to me, so that we ensure that we don't over charge the battery and over heat the phone?
Q2 : Another favour to ask: can someone please post a close up picture, of the two Nexus 4 USB cable plugs, as I've managed to confuse several USB leads and don't know which came with the Nexus, which I may need for an RMA return?
Thanks in advance
An RGB LED is basically 3 LEDs crammed into one housing. It's just like a pixel on your monitor, but larger. If you were to zoom in on your monitor you would notice the three individual colors. It just so happens that the red part of the LED doesn't diffuse throughout the housing as well as the other colors do.

I see, it's done using an app.
I can see a small red glow at the top (I guess) but it's really small and I wouldn't even have noticed without this thread. (Maybe it's because I am red-green colorblind, but I don't think this has a great effect here)
BTW: Is there a more advanced possibility to control the LED in Cyanogenmod or is it a good idea to pay for light flow (I'm especially interested in support of steam)?

Yes, by default there is no LED notification of the charge status. You can use Light Flow (including the free version) from the Play Store to add this behavior, as well as controlling notifications for all sorts of events (not just LED notifications -- sounds and vibrations, as well).
You don't need to worry about overcharging the battery, though. There is a protection circuit built in that prevents issues of that sort.

CM allows you to set colors and flash rate per app, Lite flow allows this too, Lite flow (paid) allows you to add additional apps beyond the standard ones (Gmail, SMS, Facebook, etc).

Contrary to popular believe, there are more colors than red, green and orange. My Desire's LED flashed blue and purple. Now I searched the forums and could not find any topic that confirmed this, nor on google, so just to let you guys know .
Next point on the list is finding an application that can tweak them

Gheh, it only showed for like a few seconds, then the phone restarted, I will try to replicate the bug, but I expect I will be unsuccessful .
Interesting. I got my Desire yesterday and installed the Touchdown app for corporate connectivity. In TD's settings you can customise the LED behaviour to select different colours (beyond red, green and amber) for different events. Tried it and it just flashed green, but why have these settings if there's not a way to do this...interesting
I have been able to replicate the bug. This is how I do it:
1. Turn on Bluetooth
2. Receive a text message while charging
3. Disconnect from charger
4. Turn off screen
5. Reconnect to charger
6. My led will glow purply
7. Disconnect the phone from the charger
8. Led starts flashing blue, orange and purple
9. Phone reboots

PS. images are in the first post
EDIT: Also, I should add, I have been unable to duplicate the color for a second time. No idea why it happens. Just happy I was able to get these pictures
i did what you said. no special colors but strange things happens. no reboot

Looks like the desire does some how support multi colours :S there must be a way to enable this fully within the codes. I will be donateing if the devs can get this to fully work

I have tried and tried and I have been unable to replicate this bug from this point on. I'm so happy I was able to take the pictures. I think it's because of a semi-faulty flash that I have this bug. Even though the randomality of it suggests it might be more of a hardware bug. We do however now know it has a blue led too. So cyan and white should be possible as well. I just wonder, why go through the trouble of a adding a full multicolor led, if you are only going to use 3 colors of the possible 7.
there might be something as simple as a voltage problem.
most leds will change color when you increase voltage and/or overload them.
the first few times you won't see any damage, but eventually the changing color might be permanent and then it's just a matter of time before the led just brakes.
so there is a change that it's not multi color, but the phone just overloads the led while crashing.
When I looked down the headphone port I could clearly see the red and blue led burning. I do really think there is a blue led in there.

Well we know there is a Red and Green led for definite so having a Blue as well means we have multi colour. Now we just need a way to use it
There's no way that type of colour came from overloading the phone as when an LED overloads it just blows, it doesn't change colour to that extent.

Heh, I'm sorry guys, but we already know there's a BLUE led inside.
This LED works a bit differently from the other LEDs, however.
Theres no need to do advanced tricks to show the blue LED, you
can easily enable it:
echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/leds-microp/blue/brightness
From within a terminal emulator.
the blue LED is, however, missing the 'blink' property, as the Green and Amber LEDs do.
And yes, it is also possible to turn other LEDs on at the same time, so you can make purple by enabling the BLUE and Amber LEDs.

Here are the steps I took to learn this information:
1) Read the labels on the film taped across the front of the Xoom's screen as it came from the box, where it's pointing to NOTIFICATION LED
2) Read the user manual
3) Use my common knowledge and history of using mobile, connected devices to understand that a blinking light means something new has happened or arrived on the device.
4) Post a question on the forum

Top light to the left of the camera
There's another light, just to the left of the front-facing camera. Does anybody know what it does?
The light to the camera's right glows when the camera's on. But the light to the left doesn't seem to do anything yet. (And it's not listed in the manuals nor on the plastic pull-off screen protector.)
Judging from the iFixIt take-apart photos, I'm guessing it will light up when the Xoom is running 4G.
Anybody else know more?

WOW thanks for your reply!
1. the label was taken off by the verizon employee when it was activated so i don't know that there was a sign that pointed to it.
2. the user manual did not specify where the notification light for apps are only for the charging light.
3. i know it is used to notify if something arrived but like i said it DOESN'T light when i get IMs even when the screen is off.
4. it is posted on the forum!

I'm fairly sure what you are referring to is a light sensor, for automatic brightness adjustments.
I actually had sorta the opposite problem in that I had the notification light going for seemingly no reason. Checked all apps and no notifications on bottom bar. Reboot solved but made me wonder what was up.

If you can't see the notification light it most likely has to do with your screen brightness. I thought mine was broken when it was so faint, so i cranked up the brightness and sent myself a test e-mail. When the screen was off the notification light pulsed incredibly bright, i turned it down repeated the test, and the notification light was really faint. Hopefully they can change that to where it's always bright no matter what the brightness of your screen is set at.

I assumed the notification light is only when the screen is off. Why do you need it when the screen is on? You can see all notifications in the lower right.
Also, lets not forget the notification light on the BOTTOM center of the tablet in landscape.
It only comes on if the device is OFF... its a battery charge light. Its 2 or 3 colors that change depending on the charge level.

What I'm saying is that the brightness of the notification light when your screen is off depends on the brightness your Xoom is set to. If you have your screen at 100 percent when its off the notification light will be very bright. However I had my screen quite dim and when it was off ans I received a notification, the light was almost nonexistent. You can test it for yourself. Its something that is hopefully fixed so that the notification light brightness is independent of the brightness your Xoom is set to.

Does the front LED allow you to choose any color (like the Nexus 4, Galaxy Nexus, etc)?
Does the rear LED allow this too?
Do apps like Light Flow allow you to properly set different colors for different apps? Can you use both front AND rear LED's? Thanks!

I can only speak for stock:
You cannot choose the colors for each event, but you can choose which event you want to blink. The colors for each are preset, most are green.
The rear seems to be one color, but only works for:
Incoming Call
Alarm
Ongoing Call
I believe Light Manager (nonRoot) allows you to change the colors to anything you want (on the front). The back I believe is only hyper white. It has a very nice looking pulse to it. I believe people trying light flow could not get the app to detect the rear LED. Someone else can confirm.
using light flow i got the rear led to light up but it does not flash like the front so like when you get a message the front led is flashing and the rear led stays lit up and its only color is the hyper white
Front is full RGB color. Back is just white. You cannot globally change the color for specific notification types. You can however change the color for notifications from specific contacts to colors like purple, yellow and pink (and more). It boggles my mind though that you can't change the color globally. Hopefully a custom ROM will add that.

This is working perfectly for me as well. you have to disable the built in notifications in settings but after that it works like a charm. No constant notification and no battery hog
For the time being looks like Light Manager is the answer.
For a few versions now the custom ROMs for my Gnex have had their own LED notification setup built in. You can set any color for any installed app, and it was always ultra reliable. So once the development really kicks in for the G2, I dont think we'll need any external app for it anymore.
This is all good info. I don't like stock SMS apps because I have more options with third party like GoSMS but sadly I couldn't get it to access the notification light. Very weird considering every other phone I've owned had no issues there.

Hello. Since I dont see any complains or posts about notification led, I create this post so we can share our opinions
I mean, our led is weak, not multicolor, it stops blinking after a few minutes, and when it is charging it is useless because does not blink at all (stays red).
The multicolor and weak issue it´s hardware..So I dont think there is any solution (multicolor is very useful, for example to tell apart whatsapp mesage or group, so maybe is more or less urgent..)
But, do you know any solution for "blinking time" issue and the charging issue. I read that Viper Rom has some Mod or something, but I prefer staying in stock for the time being (however, I do have root)
On the other hand, i have tried light flow app, but I do not get the led blinking, it keeps static
Thank you for your help!
Custom kernels have blink button led lights so the home and back buttons blink , this is excellent.

I think some GPE roms let you choose to have blinking led for notifications even when charging and yes, ViperOne lets you specify how long the led should blink for (its set to 60 minutes by default! lol) and you can also turn on led blinking when charging
Use Light Flow LED app from the play store. It provides an option to set different colors for different notifications.

Yeah mate I tried it, it seems to work, even it gets a weird yellow led, but the led stays static, I couldn't get it blinking
Came from a long line of blackberry's so the LED is probably one of the only things I really miss. You said you're rooted, have a look around in /system/customize/ACC/default.xml or whatever your CID's xml file is:

5
- change the 5 to 0 and you should get no led timeout.
I also did the following (personal preference, I charge at night using a dock so i like to be able to glance over and see if theres anything waiting when on silent):

false
- change from false to true and the led will blink for a notification even if it's charging.
Terrible LED is for me the only thing wrong with the One. Real shame. A partial solution for me is to install Dynamic Notifications (free/paid app) which give a Moto X type visual when notifications are received. I set it so the screen goes white instead of black and flashes every minute or so after a notification arrives. Still not ideal but saves relying on the crappy LED!

On the other hand, i have tried light flow app, but I do not get the led blinking, it keeps static
Thank you for your help!

Dear friend the all think with the notification led is so wired for me.I bought my one with vodafone branded new with 4.1. something firmware i think. The notification led in that firmware was bright enough no problem at all. With the 4.3 firmware witch i had now the intensity of the notification led has reduced significantly, plus i noticed that if your phone switch of during to battery empty and then you plug it for charging, the notification led opens for 5 seconds as normal as in the previous android versions....then looses its power again....So i think that this is not a hardware problem .

Really? That's so awesome. I will wait to arrive home to try that, just in case something goes wrong... But thank you so much, if it works.. That's all I was looking for
So then the only bad thing would be that it still weak and not multicolour. To be honest, is the only bad thing I can found in this amazing phone

Yup, agree about the LED, the green/red is a hardware limitation by HTC so lightflow and other 3rd party apps don't work in changing the colour.
I didn't explain the above fully but let me know if you any issues, will be happy to help.
Hmm I have not noticed less brightness with the last update, I feel it as weak as before..

Was just searching for light flow fix htc one and found this. Bummer but thanks
Would we cool if we at least could somehow mix the red/green blinks, ie having WhatsApp blinking red-green and LINE green-red. Is not much but at least would be something. You can even take it further and have more blinking states like green-green-red or red-green-red-green and so on. Xposed module anyone?

I was exactly thinking the same buddy!
also is there a way to make the 'back' and 'home' buttons bink, without installing another kernel?

I think it's possible (search on the Market). The main difference (I believe) is that the kernel-solution will not drain the battery (other than the power consumed by the lights) and a application should be running on the background all the time listening to all apps thus draining a lot more battery. This is just the way I see it, I don't not if it's really the case!
It stops after a few minutes because It would we shifty annoying if it's keep flashing in 2 hours...

That should be our decision, should't it?
Hey all,
Sorry if a similar problem has been posted before, but my blue and red notification LED's aren't working.
The other day, i sent my nexus 4 away to get fixed (USB/charging port was broken), and when it was returned i noticed that all notifications flashed green.
I've tried:
- turning the "pulse notification light" on and off.
- Testing the LED via light manager (only green works).
So I've come to the conclusion that the red and blue parts of the LED are broken/faulty.
Is there another fix i could try ??
Perhaps the LED wasn't reconnected properly when being fixed, is it easily accessible ?
Thanks
-Craig

The obvious answer is the one you're not trying to hear, and that is to send it back.

GEEK LESSON.:thumbup::thumbup:
Multi coloured LED,s are nearly always made up of 3 colours any other colour emitted from them is a mix of those 3 colours this is controlled by different metals / mineral e.t.c inside the LED and a chip that passes a different current to the led e.g say you wanted green the current would pass through the gallium phosphate (band) part of the led thus creating green. ( Said in easy to understand terms)
What I am trying to tell you is its next to impossible for this to break .(LED,s are near on bomb proof).
Either a cheaper LED has been replaced (unlikely as they cost very little) Or a software fault. The other colours just don't break .
As Berrydroidcafe says if this is a genuine fix from a nexus approved service you have been ripped off and should seek another replacement or fix . That's if you can't live with just a green LED.
Below is a chart explaining the elements used inside the LED which makes up the different colour spectrum .
