[Q] Nexus 4 Tmobile issue. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
My wife and I received our Nexus 4's yesterday and rushed over to get new sim cards for them with our TMobile account. The phones work great and the performance is good.
The issue that we have been having is with our data connection. TMobile doesn't seem to see an issue, but we have only been able to connect max to HSPA+:15 when our area supports HSPA+:42 (in south, Fl). We have been averaging 6-9 mbps down and 1-1.5 mpbs up, but will get drops down to 2-3 mpbs down. This seems to happen often and is associated with the phone dropping to UMTS:3.
If I watch the phones, they will non-stop jump back and forth between UMTS:3, HSPA:10, and HSPA+:15. By jumping, I mean very fast and often.
Has anyone else seen this issue? Does anyone know of a fix for it?
Piken

I feel like I've made a thousand APN posts, but I think it may apply here:
What are your APN settings currently?

Network type in about phone (in this case, HSPA+15) doesn't use the number to correspond to the connection type. As far as I can tell, HSPA:15 in about phone corresponds to the HSPA+42 network.

This. I was mostly curious due to the DL/UL speeds the OP mentioned.

It has nothing to do with your APN.

Enter *#*#4636#*#* into your dialer. Since you just pulled it out of the box, it should default to "WCDMA Preferred", but just make sure. You could also call T-Mobile and have them reprovision your data.
Honestly, though, 6-9Mbps isn't too shabby overall for non-LTE. Yeah, some people report near-30Mbps speeds, but those are rare.

I would probably say that was due to tower congestion but it could be a number of factors.. I am in HSPA:+15 on my campus, and outdoors down the street I can hit 22mbps but inside on the third floor of a building next to a window I can only hit 10mbps and after that I was seeing as low as 3mbps.

In the T-Mobile store i work in i get about 15mpbs to 20mpbs down and 2mpbs to 4mpbs up. Where i live about 25 miles away i get 12mpbs to 15mpbs down and no more then 2mpbs up. I know the Minneapolis/St Paul, MN area is a 42mpbs area. I only ever see HSPA+ 15 on mine.

I have had similar experiences. In my apartment, I get 3-6 depending on the room and time of day. In my office 7-11. Outside 18-20.

Can't Receive MMS on T-Mobile
I've been getting around 12 MBs on mine....seems decent....

I also have slow-ish speeds on T-Mobile, seemingly slower than my SGS2. I don't think I've ever seen better than 10 down, average probably 5. Experiencing slow speeds on WiFi as well.

I'm only getting about 300 kb down and 1.2Mb up. The phone says I'm on HSPA:10

When I first got Straight Talk with T-Mobile, I was getting 15000kbps upload and 3200 download speeds. Now, I am only getting 500kbps upload and 500kbps download speed, from the same location. I wonder what the problem is.

At least you get data/reception at all.

Same here and I'm also in South Florida (Miami). Could it be Tmobile;s towers? Everytime I unlock the \phone it jumps from 3G to H. Never did this with my previous phones... Any news on this?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Speed_Downlink_Packet_Access#User_Equipment_.28UE.29_categories
Strange since category 15 is 16qam mimo -- 23.4mbps
AFAIK, we're not using MIMO. hspa+21 should be cat14-- 64qam, and hspa+42 should be cat24-- 64qam dual-cell.
Correct me if I'm mistaken...
Perhaps it's a reporting error? Nonetheless, as everyone has mentioned, it refers to the category, and not your actual theoretical max.

Why is internet so slow on G2?

This is second day on my G2. I have been unpleasant so far about using this as I come from using Nokia n900, iphone..
ever since using stock rom outta the box, the internet seems to be very sluggish.
Fast forward, I am now using Virtuous Desire HD rom, and the internet performance is very slow again.
apn: epc.tmobile.com
Is this a problem with g2 radio band or something missing here?
Thanks
download speedtest app and/or go to speedtest.net and give some more concrete numbers, also where are you and what kind of signal do you have, are you in HSPA+ area?
I am in a major metropolitan area inside HSPA+ footprint. (5bars and 3G logo)
haha going to speedtest.net, the site loads except for the main part of the page, the flash api and therefore I am unable to conduct the test. Maybe that will help you analyze how slow it's going.

Those are the correct settings... its sounds like your area has serious congestion issues. Can you put your sim in another tmobile 3g phone to confirm its the network and not your hardware?

Oh course it is but this guy is having major issues with hardware or congestion. with a normal situation... like most others... the G2 blazes. but this guy has a issue needing resolving so no silly comments please!
the slowest speed i have gotten was .15 - .25 mbps down 1.5 megs up there was a lot of congestion at my job at the time. avg i get is 3.45 mbps and peak was 5.5 mbps. I would definately call tmo for the issue

This is not at all what should be happening. I have sometimes gotten very slow speeds like 0.2 Mb/s down, but a quick reboot has solved the issue. Try the suggestion of putting the SIM in another phone or duplicate this in the store. Might be the phone, because if it were the network, many, many people would have complained.
My G2 is the same way. I am in Arlington/Alexandria, VA which is supposed to have HSPA+. Even when my device status says "HSDPA" I am usually only getting about 500kbps down. The funny thing is I still often get 1mbps up!
Right now here is what my "4G Speeds" are getting me:
Ping: 151ms
Down: 127kbps
Up: 330 kbps
Signal Strength: -85dBm
Network Type: HSDPA
APN Settings: default
I am running the updated stock 2.2 from TMO. I have gotten downlink speeds faster than 1mbps only a handful of times since I bought the phone in early October. What gives?
I just recently purchased my G2 a few days ago and it has speed issues as well. I live in Las Vegas which is supposed to have HSPA+ coverage, but my phone has been stuck on Edge since my purchase. My speeds have been horrible and TMo has no idea why.
Right now these are my speeds
Ping: 379 (Los Angeles,CA was the closest being only 75mi away)
Down: 35 kbps
Up: 26 kbps
Signal: -91dBm
Network type as of since I purchased the phone: EDGE (Been all around the city with same results)
Heading to the TMo store later tonight will update if it duplicates or not.

Thanks for the reply. That was one of the first things I have tried, but alas I am still stuck on Edge everywhere. Maybe I have a bunk phone or something is wrong with my account. I have actually been receiving a text consistently since 4am this morning. It's from 10076200000 the only thing it says is <sisa:39972758:1:1:199:14095402>10hbrZBycJABgDIpGQ1XGw. It may be an error code of some sort from the network. I could be wrong, but from what I have been reading TMo sends out a similar error code (From 10476000000) for an error in their email systems.
I am heading over to TMo in about an hour. We will see if they have any insight as to what is going on. I will post back the results of the visit if it will benefit this topic.

wuz up Trini? how da hell u gettin 5 down, the most I get is 2 down, i'm in ft laud, im getting like 3g speeds typically
Yes, I am aware that HSDPA is not the same as HSPA+, however the Signal Type screen does not appear to distinguish between "HSDPA" and "HSPA+". Case in point, later that same day I tested my connection at Reagan National Airport only .5 miles from where I tested earlier in the day and here were my results:
Downlink speed: 5393 kbps
Uplink speed: 1282 kbps
Ping: 102 ms
Signal Type: HSDPA
I assume that at those speeds I was definitely pulling from an HSPA+ capable tower, but the signal type still reads HSDPA. So what gives?

Just read the thread and I'm sorry if I missed it if someone wrote this but could it be that your data plan hasn't changed from your previous phone?
Not sure how much that'll affect things but I know it made a phone of mine unusable until I corrected it.
My first G2 was stuck in edge 90% of the time. When I was on H it was very slow (less than 300kbps). Tmo CSR said it was defective and exchanged it. New one is good to go.

Ping and data speeds on AT&T

I have an Infuse at the moment and a SGSII.
The infuse clocks in with much lower pings and much faster downloads.
What is everyone else getting for AT&T speed tests?
I can't seem to get under 150ms ping (in a "4G" area) with the SGSII but the atrix and infuse do that just fine.
Should I check my APNS?
I just got back from Boston. Was able to get 4.9mb down and 1.4mb up near Logan Airport. I was on H+ almost my entire time in the city this long weekend.

Care to compare the download stats? It'll be interesting as they're both Samsung phones with the SGS2 being the higher spec'd of the two. As for pings, the SGS2 automatically disables data and drops to 3G when there's no data trafffic dedected. The time it takes to kick back in probably isn't helping its ping numbers.

The fasted download I've gotten so far is 4MB. That was with one of my longest pings (253ms). My shortest ping was 88ms with a download speed of 3MB. I don't know if there's a direct correlation.

Here at work (I get much better service than at home) I don't go over 100ms on ping with the atrix or the infuse.
Downloads are anywhere from 3-8 (8 was the highest i've seen with the infuse.)
The SGSII so far has yet to go under 140ms on ping and downloads are around 2.5-3.5.
Same location. I don't have the infuse with me to check today but it's something i've noticed here.
131ms ping on this test I just ran with 2.8 Mbps down.
Never hit 3 mbps on mine even after apn tweak. Highest I've ever gotten is 2.8 on H+.

There are some people that have posted downloads consistently in the 7s and 8s with the SGS2. I don't remember where they tested. There seems to be a lot of SGS2s in NYC and they average mid-2s and 3s. Someone in Florida posted scores in the low teens so the phone appears to be capable. The ping times concern me less than the D/L speed - espcially with the funky power saving data management feature. Are the APN/networks settings the same in both the SGS2 and Infuse?
i cant imagine ATT would preferred speeds to the Infuse over the SGS2, perhaps its just coincidince? i know my n1 sees about 160 ms but highest i saw last week was 100ms in NJ. and that is a non-ATT phone.

But the Infuse is a carrier phone which means it ships with settings optimized for AT&T's network. It also probably has a different hardware radio. That's what intrigues me about a side-by-side comparison.

Galaxy S2 and those on 3UK

Just wondering what speeds you guys on 3Uk are getting on speed test.
I'm getting very slow speeds, even when I've got good reception.
I notice some people are getting near 6mb download, I'm struggling to get 1mb.
Could you also share your apn settings, and anything else to make sure my phone is set up right. For example should I be on wcdma only?
I thought 3uk would be good for data but Orange seemed to have been better for me
Thanks

For me I get 6mb+ from some masts but on my actual H+ mast at home I get about 3mb from midnight and in normal working hours its about 200kb/sec as theres just too many users on my mast as I live on a raf base
Cheers for the replies.
I've been in different areas in London and Essex and still not gotten past 1mb.
Even at home the time of day or night makes no difference it's a constant 1mb roughly
I've read about using the 3internet apn but that made no difference to me.
And I'm getting fed up of flashing different modems too.
Guess I'll just have to live with it....

[Q] Correct APN Setting for T-Mobile UK with Nexus?

I'm having a nightmare here. I used GiffGaff for a few months with my Nexus 4, and had tremendous speeds. However, I saw a great deal with T-Mobile so I ended up switching over, and it's been nothing but problems. My download speeds are around 10kbps and 300kbps (even when I have full "H"signal) at its highest, while upload speeds can be over 1mbps.
I've tried resetting the APNs to default and taking the SIM out, but that hasn't changed anything. When I moved over I ported my old number onto the T-Mobile SIM. the downside of this is that when I go into SIM Tool Kit and try to request it to send internet settings, it doesn't come through - I think this is because the phone number shown in "about phone" in the settings, and the one that is presumable still saved on the SIM, is still the number that was originally on it, and I think that's where the messages are being sent to.
So, I wondered if any UK users on T-Mobile are able to get decent download speeds on their Nexus 4, and if so, could they share their settings? I always have full H signal, and I live in the heart of Manchester city centre - hardly a rural retreat with no signal. It's been like this for a week now. I'm planning on ringing them up, but I'm not sure what they could do other than get me to change the APN settings.
Any help is appreciated! Current APN settings are:
Name: T-Mobile UK
APN: general.t-mobile.uk
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not Set
Username: t-mobile
Password: ** (I think this is "tm")
Server: Not set
MMSC: http://mmsc.t-mobile.co.uk:8002
MMS proxy: 149.254.201.135
MMS Port: 8080
MCC: 234
MNC: 30
Authenticationo type: Not Set
ANY type: default,supl,mms
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
Bearer: Unspecified
I have exactly the same settings and can get speeds around 15Mbps.
I thought as much... So... Any other suggestions? Is it possible it could be a dodgy SIM card? But then it does connect even though it's really slow... Surely of it was broken it wouldn't connect at all?

I can't believe it, that actually seemed to work! I just hit 5mbps on a speed test for the first time with this sim! It hadn't even hit 500kbps before!
With regards to your second point, t mobile sent me a test MMS, and I could see the picture fine, so I don't think I need to split out my apns.
I'll see how I get on anyway. One final question, I do need data roaming switched on to access the Orange 3G signal right?

I remember when I used to be with t mobile and they had just started signal sharing with orange. When it switched to orange signal, a little "R" appeared to show that it was roaming onto a different network. Has the way they do the sharing totally changed now if data roaming isn't needed to get Orange 3g signal?

I'm having a nightmare here. I used GiffGaff for a few months with my Nexus 4, and had tremendous speeds. However, I saw a great deal with T-Mobile so I ended up switching over, and it's been nothing but problems. My download speeds are around 10kbps and 300kbps (even when I have full "H"signal) at its highest, while upload speeds can be over 1mbps.

More than one month ago I found a quite interesting offer in T-Mobile, a cheap one and I thought I will sign a contract... why not. I had a contract before, I had nothing but problems with them... I have tried once more. T-Mobile wasn't able to give me a proper price for first bill, I spent hours, going to the store and calling to customer service. Nothing but nightmare... no more, no less.
For my Nexus 4 I have simcard from 3-UK Network. My best speed was 22Mbps - sometimes, during the day speed obviously being dropped to 5-10 Mbps... Just a minute ago, I had tested - 12 Mbps. 3 giving what I need - unlimited internet usage - truly one.
I barely get 1.2Mbps from o2 even when my signal strength is full Was the same on my S2 and now N4.
Never had roaming switched on and seem to spend most of my time on the orange signal. Don't notice any speed difference between the 2. Although the other day I got 20000kbps download speed when sat near a transmitter. I'm currently using the EE APN settings.

And you have a T-Mobile sim yeah? Can you tell me your EE APN settings please? I'm still having problems over here.

Are you sure you have 4G (HSPA+) or even 3G AT&T service for that matter in your area? A lot of rural areas are only 2G on AT&T's network. And a word of advice on ST AT&T running a lot of speedtests in one day will cause you to go over their daily limit resulting in you getting throttled down to 2G speeds for the reminder of your month. The daily limit is somewhere between 50 and 100 MB and one speedtest alone can use up to 12MB. People also report being throttled after hitting 1.5GB of usage in a month.
Edit: sorry just saw the H in your picture so it would appear you might be throttled by AT&T if your settings are right. Not sure if the H would still show up if your throttled as I've never had it happen to me. So not really sure.
Here are the APN settings I use

Are you on AT&T SIM, or T-Mobile SIM?
First, I would go to APN settings and try "Reset to defaults" from the options menu.
If you still have issues check the settings against http://www.straighttalksim.com/support.php #4 Update Settings.
Lastly, check one of the many threads already posted in the Nexus 4 General forms;

Then I would think you're being throttled.
That's horrible then. I've only used a total of 663Mb of data (3g/4g) .. Use WiFi mostly
I think I need to contact straight talk then.
I would use T-Mobile Sim . but about 4yrs ago I had T-Mobile. & It sucked in my area

I have confirmed calls from straight talk.
I am throttled to 0.26 MBS (avg)
They are now throttling after 1gb or a unsaid amount per day.
Paying your bill will not lift this.
Supposedly letting your service expire. Then paying your bill will lift the throttle until the limit is hit.
I am getting a T-Mobile Sim to try now.

Just for a call threatening to shut off my service.
This is fn bullshish !

i think AT&T has been tightening the reigns for their MVNOs. pretty much all of the ones that offered unlimited are now suddenly limited.
I told straight talk they need to send me a T-Mobile sim card for free. Lol
If they don't. I will be dropping my service!

I dumped ST and went with AT&T's own GoPhone plan for $50 a month. Its only 1 GB of data a month but at least I know the limit and its not some arbitrary number. Plus I was afraid of losing my phone number which I ported to ST for violating some obscure rule of theirs like streaming video. Also their customer service is abysmal to say the least. Would love to go to T-Mobile but it sucks everywhere in Michigan and their new LTE ain't going to fix that as the state is 99% rural and will never get it let alone HSPA.
is there a way to bypass throttle?
So I have seen in some threads that turning data on and off as well as airplane mode tricks the system. But it does not work for me. Any one know how to do this and how can I stop them from knowing how much data I'm using?
Get T-Mobile Truly Unlimited
30gb this month so far and still getting 14mbps
[LG NEXUS⁴] [LIQUIDSMOOTH] [MATR1X] [POETIC BLK BUMPER] [APEX PRO] [TAPATALK PRO]
Lol nice..
Ajay note their is no way to "trick the system"
Your just sol
