nfc to open doors? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The building is my condo which I am referring to which currently has swipe access. All condo owners have the "tab" which we currently pass over the little box (please excuse my technical jargon ) to open the door.
I was hoping my nfc phone could copy/mimic/be sent to the same "frequency" as the tab to open the door thus eliminating the need to carry the tab on my key chain.
is there any way my phone can learn the signal?

Man I can't help you with that, but it seems like a cool idea though. good luck

I believe there are certain door locks that can be opened via bluetooth, so I'd think it's not out of the question

It really depends on the type of technology used in your condo. I checked with one of my friends condo tags and my phone wouldn't recognize it. The phone could read stuff like subway cards and my XPERIA's SmartTags and you can copy all* data from those onto the phone itself.

could you tell me which app you used for copying the data????

While cool in theory, I would hate for something like that to actually work. The whole point of a system like that is that nobody can copy them, otherwise you could have people who have no business having access to your building able to come and go. Former residents, friends of residents, strangers who happened to see someone's key laying out and quickly copied it with their phone, etc.

For this to work the system would first of all have to be compatible with standard ISO/IEC 14443.
Secondly: modern NFC phones do not support card emulation in the way a "normal" reader would be able to read. You would have to have operator support and special SIM card to be able to clone the card as you intended.
I am afraid that there is no easy solution how to make a normal access control system support NFC mobile phones.

What to do with my G1 thats not being used?

So, I've gone out and bought the MyTouch 3g Slide, and most likely won't be going back to use my G1 as my daily driver. I have no plans to sell the G1, well, not yet anyways.
So what can be done with my G1? I was thinking of maybe using it as a navigation-only device. Problem is, with no SIM, I of course would need a nav system that stores the maps on the SD card. The phone is rooted, so I was wondering whats the best way to try and trim this phone down to almost nothing, so that all it will basically be able to do is load the nav app I install. Is this possible or already done?
I really liked this device. It did pop my Android cherry after all, and I don't just want it to collect dust.
Thanks in advance.
Edit: I intentionally posted this in General, but after re-reading this, would it make more sense to post this in the Development forum? Can a mod move it if so...?
put it in a box and ship it to me this way your not selling it.... your giving it away
yeah... send it my way. My kid has been ogling my G1 forever now. He wants one soooo bad. LOL.
OK, aside from selling it, or giving it away, what else...
I've often thought of what to do with my G1 when and if a successor becomes available.
I personally would love it if some developers could get together to make a rom that would resemble what the Ipod Touch is to the Iphone. All the programs and games, no phone bits. Just use it as a personal media player. Or in my case, i use it as a wifi remote for my HTPC also.
Oh, and does it make you wonder..when 2.2 source is available to the public, would trimming out all the telephone parts make the G1(with dangerspl) upgradeable again?
Cancel your home landline, put google voice on the g1, keep it connected to wi-fi all the time, and you got free nation wide calling and a cheap international calling. Also since it is connected to wi-fi, you can still use it as a phone.
Send it to me pretty please (I need to update my N95).
... Okay fine, how about charity?
LOL ...no?
Well aside from using it as:
a second phone,
Digital camera (poor one),
PMP/iPod (listen to music/watch pictures/videos),
Portable gaming console (Atari, C64, Sega Genesis, GBA, SNES and Android games),
Home entertainment unit (surf on your couch with wifi) and
eBook reader (nonetheless poorly).
I can't think of anything else.
If you can't find another use for it besides just a mobile phone, you're really missing out and should just post it to me
Definitly new ipod or home phone
there's a pretty nifty howto over at instructables.com on using the G1 to power a home-made robot

I have mine on wifi and setup like this.. pretty cool as I now can use it as separate phone while at work, home etc .. and with the app penetrate I get even more use of the wifi

Ya know, I am planning on upgrading to the Touch Slide or whatever in a few months when I can afford it...when I do, I might just whip something up ROM wise that has no phone bits, but strictly media apps like:
WIFI Remote for various HTPC frontends (XBMC, MediaPortal, etc)
Music Apps (stock music, 3, etc)
Anything else I can think of
I think that would be a fun project. And considering everything in my home is OpenSource, it shouldn't be all that hard to find (or create) all the apps I need.
That sir, would be pimp.
But to cut down the rom size why not make those a flashable addon? Make it so they install to sd automatically maybe? The biggest thing would be to fit 2.2 on the phone, with support for apps to sd, jit, and all the other delicious froyo goodness.
Thanks for listening.
Use it as a dedicated SIP phone in wifi areas.
First get a google voice number and a gizmo5 sip number.
Forward your GV number to your regular cell number as well as your gizmo5 sip number using sipdroid (market) on the G1, so that when you're in wifi areas both your cell and your g1 will ring. Now you can answer either based on whatever... caller, importance, etc.
Make outgoing calls in wifi using all of the above and the GV callback program (market) so as to make totally free calls. Add some money to google voice for international.
Use it on the tabletop like a pda and take calls on your cell. actually very convenient. I've got a clamshell which I prefer for talking and can take more abuse than the G1.
Get a Tmobile $100 prepaid sim which is good for a year. That's 10c min and your own number for a year! ..and if you add any money to it the expiration is extended to a year from the add. At that price you can throw it in the car for 11 months and forget about it only to switch it to another phone later.
Put 2 grooves in it and call it an ashtray. -Bill Cosby
i have a retired htc magician which i am using as an alarm clock and listening to audio books. It served me well over the years. Was my first HTC phone. Battery still lasts more than a week...

[Q] Protecting our info

quotes from http://www.popularmechanics.com/tec...-your-phone-during-a-traffic-stop-5587825?rss
"According to an American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) letter to the director of the Michigan State Police on April 13, that department has several forensic cellphone analyzers deployed in the field. Forensic analyzers are routinely used in police investigations to recover data from computers and other digital devices."
"According to Cellebrite's product description, the UFED can grab email, Web bookmarks, Web history, SIM data, cookies, notes, MMS, instant messages, Bluetooth devices, locations, journeys, GPS fixes, call logs, text messages, contacts and more. '
You can call me paranoid but if this gets to be a major issue, is there a way to protect our information on our phones?
EDIT
After some searching here are a few other threads with concerns about the UFED: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1043865
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045464
Came across this little bit of info and it might help stop the UFED. Its a review but it states which type of phones are not compatible with the UFED.....gotta make our phones software more similar to the Chinese software they use for their mobile devices???? And locked SIM cards must be unlocked also prior to extracting.
http://www.forensickb.com/2010/03/how-do-you-extract-information-from-45.html
I might be WAY OFF so somebody correct me. But doesn't the RAM hold everything like encryption keys or passwords if the phone is off or locked or something? So it doesnt matter if u get rid of your SD card or SIM card.......
Read this Devs it might help with prevention:

http://computer-forensics.sans.org/...ite-ufed-extract-phone-data-file-system-dump/
throw them away. put your tinfoil hat on, and dig a deep hole. if you circumvent it, and the police want / need to read it - which they probably never will - but if they can't, they're only going to get the rubber gloves out and throw you in guantamo prison.

Nexus S detects train access cards

This is more of an FYI...
I found out today that my Nexus S can detect MyKi cards (Subway/train access cards in Melbourne Australia - http://www.myki.com.au ) when NFC is turned on. To test it out, just place the phone on top of your wallet with the MyKi card in it and you'll hear the detection sound.
Now the question is, when will I be able to use the phone instead of the access card?
It would be much easier just to open an app and touch the back of the phone to pass through the gates at the train station.
The future, just one step away
I use the same (stupid) smart-ticket system here in melbourne, waste of money the myki card is. anyways, to answer your question, the card is an nfc enabled device. and it has a chip inside which stores information (an unique code for the card). and the phone (NS) reads that info, and beeps indicating it recognises it. if there is an app utilises NFC, like NFC task launcher, it will automatically launch it and respond with appropriate actions. source? i have and use an myki myself

Need help... note was stolen.

hey guys, a buddy of mine just had his note stolen. it is a wifi only device and i need to know if there is a way to locate it... i dont have any information of the device available other than a text+ phone number that the device is using. please shoot me a PM if you have any ideas, i have a few people working on it right now but need all and any ideas or input. please send PMs
thanks in advance
All notes have antitheft application built in it, atleast mine has, you need to register the same if you do you can track the phone from Samsung tracker website, it should be able to give you its location and also should be able to lock it, dont know whether it will happen with a wifi version as there is no imei number you can check

thank you... very useful... contacting somebody i know at google right now as well.
But... if you did not activate the utrack function (and if you did, you should know), then it will not work.
Found it.. Thanks for the input guys
Before saying it doesnt work (if you will) mind this:
1. It has to be switched on obviously
2. You need to have a working internet connection, meaning if he removes/switches simcard (you may recieve a notification about simcard change) and turn off WiFi, you're toast
3. Its possible he made a factory reset.. If so you're also toast
Personally Im using rooted N8000 and Avast Anti-theft.
Cheers cobraboy for letting us know, most people just leave threads open ended. How did you find it? Be interesting for others to know....
His saving grace was that it was connected to my buddy's WiFi...there were 4 people at the house when it turned up missing...
I got on his main computer at his house, pulled up a list of all the mac IDs connected to their WiFi, identified all 10 devices in the house individually, phones, computers, etc...
His tab should have come up on that list if it was there - it did not. So I confronted the person who I was pretty sure was the only one that would have taken it and told him I knew he had taken it - he came with our other friend..
Showed them all that it was physically missing and not in range of the home network... Even tho it was previously connected... Then told him I was going to call the cops over there if somebody didn't fess up so this was his chance to come clean (as my friends and I don't ****ing steal from each other... Durr) and he admitted to putting it outside while we were all upstairs, then texting another friend of his to come by the house and snagging it.
Got it back. And somebody might have had a bloody nose when all was said and done. Low lifes.
glad you got a result!
i would have emptied there pockets and took anything of value while i was at the nose breaking ceremony
alls well the ends well good you got the note back now activate the tracker
I have had great experience with the Cerberus anti theft app :good:

You can also write a Tasker code for this kind of stuff. My TF101 used to take a snapshot of the front and back cameras, turn on WIFI, located by GPS and WIFI, then sync the photos and location data to a dropbox. I didn't do more coding because it was inconvenient and I ended up with shots of me taking a ****.. but, you know, if someone wanted to, he could easily turn that into a profile based on location (ie. maybe it won't take snapshots if you're on a recognized wifi or something).
How do you turn on the anti theft......would be interesting to hear from users of N8000, N8010, and N8013 to see IF the process is different for each.
Also, it would be nice to read of users preferred app......

It's called Samsung Dive and it's pretty cool beyond just lost device tracking. You (N8000) owners can use it to forward calls and MMS to another device, ring the device (like if you lost it in the house), and, if it's stolen or lost, remote wipe and lock it so it can't be used.
You sign in to the Dive website with your Samsung account. My account's in the UK so I don't how it works in the U.S. I didn't do anything to get my device(s) to appear in Dive other than use my Samsung account when I first set them up.
http://www.samsungdive.com/DiveMain.do
To get Dive to work you have to enable it on your device. It's under Settings>Security>Remote controls if it's available on your particular Note. This is from my N2 but the 10.1's the same.
Just registered with Samsung Dive. N8013, signed in and it automatically recognized the Note. Pretty slick

[Q] Reproduce NFC?

Is it possible to read an NFC tag, for example one that lets me enter a hotel room, and then reproduce the signal to be read by another NFC reader?
For example, I read an NFC tag that lets me into my hotel and store the data on the Android device. I then tap my device (not the card) against the NFC reader on the hotel room door and the device sends the data that was on the card, and the door opens.
If so, what program allows me to do this? I've tried downloading a few random ones but haven't found this functionality and am beginning to doubt it's possible.
No, the N7 can read and write tags but not emulate one. The best you could do might be to copy data from one tag to another and use that.
Or even better, I tap your access card against my tablet and store your hotel room access info and wait for you to go out and then enter your room.
I think you may struggle to find something openly available that would allow you to clone NFC tags so simply, though in theory it may be possible
