[Q] ICS' Data Usage: Conflicting Results? - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've just noticed this as I've been trying to record how much data I can get out of my carrier since they won't actually say how much.
I digress, The Data usage in ICS' settings doesn't seem to make any lick of sense. The graph/total data used summary is less than all the apps' data usage added up. This also happened before an SBF flash and start from scratch. The numbers don't add up! (See the photos for details).
So what's the beef? Does this mini app not differentiate when one service uses another for a data connection within individual app counting?
i.e. Gallery uploads a photo to Dropbox. Data usage records both as having uploaded the 3Mb photo.
i.e. Android OS uses Tethering. Data usage records both as having used 20MB...
etc.
In other words, The graph records the total used between the phone and carrier, while the individual apps record exactly what the app uses, sometimes overlapping other apps. Is this what's going on?

I think you're right about the overlapping measurement, although for me there is always a difference between provider and phone data measurement

Thanks for your input. I'm not so concerned about how much the provider records, unless they differences are night and day.
Cheers.

2/3 G signal strength

Is it possible to get the mobile signal strength on GT 7.7
I had try lots of ways but can't successful.
What you mean "get"? To get it as a function in your own app's code or just you want to see it?
Turn off WiFi and you'll see strength bars in notification popup (on the place where you usually see WiFi signal bars).
There are plenty of apps like this one that display signal info:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.cellsignaltester.moby
You can also get that in the About page of the device settings. What exactly are you after?
nooooo, use this one instead, this Widget is better

It's all the same data obtained from the phone. A widget tends to suck battery and performance so that's why I recommended a simpler app. Since there are a ton of them, it's really incumbent on the end user to decide what they like.
All of that apps doesn't work on SGS2/Tab7.7 (Exynos-based chipsets).
No, they work (run), but unable to show correct signal level due to a "bug" in modem FW. They always show +85dbm. So the only way to see correct signal strength is the system signal meter in statusbar.
Any way to update the modem driver to fix the Bug ?

Don't think so. Samsung does not care about it - still not fixed even on SGS2, which is already on the market for a long time. Maybe it will be fixed with ICS release, nobody knows.

Something constantly using my Data!?

Whenever I connect to the internet on my N4, something keeps chewing up all the data bandwidth, so much so that my HSPA connection ground to a halt this morning!!
What is the best way to determine what is using up all the bandwidth without going through every single app and disabling them one by one?
Any good apps that will track this?
Please don't mention the "Data Usage" within Android Settings - to me it is almost useless!
Cheers

for me 3G watch dog and data usage gives almost similar number +-2%. Other than 3G watch dog I used phone usage from play store.
There are firewall available which makes you choose which all apps you want to use your data. (MIUI had great inbuilt option which I used year ago)
The Data Usage app built into Android 4.2 does work for you?

You can even look at a day by day usage, by touching the graph and moving the white handles around.
Set a Warning notification by moving the orange handle..

It might have something to do with Voice Typing. Try disabling Google Search from Keyboard Input Methods. Or try clearing the data of Android Keyboard.
I get the same issue.
Noticed it because my device got really hot and I saw all four cores constantly above 1,5 GHz (Galaxy S4).
If you look in Apps you will see that Google Keyboard is constantly starting dictionary service. Do not disable the keyboard because the device gets unusable due to Force Closes.
same problem
I have same problem with Google keyboard. Just now I restricted background data for wi-fi and mobile and I noticed that my phone cooled down very fast. I'will test it today and let you know what I found out.
Fixed problem with keyboard draining battery by restricting it's background data both on wi-fi and mobile. Before I got about 2h of SOT on full charge(100%-0%), and now I got 1h 45min SOT on 20%(100%-80%)
over 4gb.... I usually strict my data usage to certain mb. That way I don't have to worry about it. Anyway thanks for the heads up.

Help and what happened - aospa browser downloaded 1GB of data.

So today I got this nice notice of Android that I'm reaching my mobile data cap. So as it seems, is that the aospa browser downloaded 1GB of data in the background during the night between 1 and 2 november.

I'm very concerned on what caused this and costed me €10 of mobile data. I deinstalled the browser from /system/apps for now. I don't use the aospa browser myself, I use Google Chrome.
Can I check somewhere, or in some logs what it did and what caused it?
BTW, the data is really used, and not just a bug in the "Data Usage"-tab, as my carrier states I only got 178MB left for the month.
Have u done any speed tests for the your mobile data? Usually that eats a lot of data; even just doing one test.

No, and besides that would turn up that the speedtest app would have consumed that data, and even in the background.
Specifically the aospa browser downloaded 1.05GB in the BACKGROUND.
Thread closed so the OP can create a new one in Android Q&A, as per request.

CM13: Slow LTE Speeds?

anyone else have issues with slow data when downloading anything or when using certain apps? though speedtest has always shown decent speeds, i've always noticed that downloading files or using apps like instagram or snapchat seem to take FOREVER to upload/download media. i ran an experiment this morning and have absolutely no idea wtf is going on but you can see the differences in download speed i'm talking about:
LTE speedtest results:

LTE right before i ran the speedtest above, here's my download speed for a video - a MERE 178 KB/s:
and here's me having connected to WiFi as soon as i got into the office, showing it's not a server issue where the above file is hosted:
should i enable/disable something? i've had to mess with disabling optimizing certain apps for battery consumption or whatever for random issues (notifications, not sync'ing, etc.) - could down-speeds be similarly affected with a random setting? FYI my 'bars'/reception show as full, on LTE, and speedtest results are quite high. i'm absolutely dumbfounded and because i'm currently taking an uber to/from the office (30mi each way), it's extremely frustrating as i'm on my phone the entire time.
TIA!
so no one? one bump before accepting the crappy speeds
I have the same problem with my galaxy s5 running the latest cm13 snapshot. I tried reverting back to stock and the data speeds were again normal (fast). But then i flashed back cyanogenmod and the problem continues... Stuck at 200kb/s
