OK i know for a FACT that i will kick myself when somebody points me in the right direction but i have tried and fail to find an option where the phone will keep the screen display lit (as in phone unlocked and ready to use) when charging.
My HOX had this and it meant that when the phone was on my desk in the day right next to the keyboard, i didnt have to unlock it a BAZILLION times (email group policy requires a key lock)
If someone can save me from this torture i will be eternally grateful.
JB
Repeatedly tap the version number (or was it model number... well one of them) in the "about" section of settings to unlock development options. Go into development options and check "keep screen on while charging". I may be off a bit on the names of the settings, but it should be fairly close to that. Going by memory here
ok im almost there, got the developer menu to appear but the option for screen on power is greyed out
Well that's weird. I wonder what would possess Google to disable that option
Not much help I know but i checked my gnex on 4.2 and its third option down "stay awake" it shouldn't be grayed out. Only think I can think of is have you updated to 4.2.1?
If anyone else has a nexus4 and willing to chime in it would be handy but its definitely there and can be selected on 4.2 gnex so should be the same on other devices I would have thought

in the developer the following are greyed out;
take bug report
stay awake
power menu bug reports
wait for debugger
verify apps over usb
I'm on 4.2 as 4.2.1 isn't advertised yet when i check for updates.
Hopefully some helpful chap with a n4 will chip in. Sounds strange that those options are grayed out.
It would really be trial and error as to whether the update may enable those options although its not mentioned in the change log. It could be disabled for some reason but then only Google could answer that.
There will be a way to change it. In the mean time you could just change the screen time out to never or the highest setting when at your desk. Its just something for just now. If I find anything in the mean time I shall post up though

Only wait for debugger is greyed out on mine, and I'm assuming that's because I haven't selected a debugging app.

They are grayed out likely due to your email security policy. Remove your email account and see if you gain access to the option.
Did you try looking at the very top of the developer options?
Or is it ONLY those 5 that are grey?

I have the same issue, 4.2.1 on a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. All mentioned, except stay away are disabled for me :-/ [and I need "take bug report"]
Take bug report
power menu bug reports
wait for debugger
verify apps over usb

Hi, I have yet to find a way to prevent the screen from powering down in my Samsung Focus. I have it set to 5 minutes but with a charger attached, I really should be able to keep the screen on if I need it... which I do.
A simple setting: "Never" would work. I am old enough to establish my battery usage
Am I missing something here? With Android, this option was available in the Development settings.
Thanks
maybe there's not an option for that yet. Just set your display settings to never and force timeout yourself by clicking the power button?
you have the option to set it to never but that option goes away when you are charging? did you set your phone up to an exchange server? i know when i did mine the never option went away.
Whoa.. where is this "Never" option you guys are referring to?
I go to Settings > Lock & Wallpaper > Screen Time Out = 5 Minutes (Which is the max setting) Other choices are 30 Sec., 1 Min and 3 Min.
Thanks for the replies!

Ouch! So that was something the manufacturers could change and Samsung screwed it up. 'Never' option makes a lot of sense.
That is deeply disappointing. Is it something that can be altered via an update?
i'm afraid i have to disagree... i have a HTC 7 Trophy and have teh same options as listed by Frank.

samsung is making some kick ass hardware these days but still has a lot to be desired on the software front.
Maybe it will be in an update, but I doubt it.
Major oversight IMO and one that I will voice to Samsung.

Exactly! I have been looking into this more and it seems the developers can code something to prevent this from happening with their apps.
Hopefully someone will develop something to allow the screen to stay on (I will pay), or maybe one of you uber-wise experts will find a backdoor setting.

Never option is only available if you're not using a password. Turn the password option on, the never option isn't available. At least that's how it works on my Quantum.
Yesterday, after playing with Samsung "Diagnosis" software, somehow I've got "Never" option set.

That's bizarre. I have a Focus also and I never knew other phones had a Never option for screen timeout. Maybe Samsung was concerned about the Super AMOLED's effects on battery life?

Sorry, nope. But I wish so!.. For development it's very useful option. BTW, it's possible - 100% proof. So, we just need to figure out how to...
P.S. Fortunately, I also have HTC Surround handset for development (stays on forever)
P.P.S. FYI: I've played (mostly) with *#0*#...
Well thanks for the effort sensboston! Hopefully you can crack the code. FWIW I called Samsung in Canada (went nowhere) and posted the question on Samsung.com (waiting for it to get approved)
Cheers!
I have posted a bug on samsung developer forum and got this answer:
"This forum support only developer issues. This is end-user issue."
source: http://developer.samsung.com/forum/...neralB&messageId=201822&startPage=1&curPage=1
so it is customer problem that we get those bugs? or is it feature?
and one more:
i have also reported of touchwizz bug related on all jb firmwares, like fc while deleting home page, folder or quick icons on locked screen and they comfirmed about this bug but also said that it isnt their fault.....
source http://developer.samsung.com/forum/...neralB&messageId=200862&startPage=1&curPage=2
"I have to admit that your feedback was very helpfull to know the cause of the problem, but on the other hand, when you turn on "Developer options" you can see a caution: "These Settings are intended for development use only. They can cause errors to occur on your device and with the applications on it.". You have been informed that there may be problems with device and with the applications. The problem never occurs with the "Developer options" turned off."
so again it is fault of customers that they uses functions which are implented?
maybe i'm not correct but common they could fix those bugs instead of finding the explanation saying that it isnt their fault...
It really isn't their problem once you decide to turn on developer options.

if animation/transition scales wouldnt be at developer settings, i wouldnt care about that option. But common when scale is at 1.0x, transition isnt so smooth as with 0.5x or with disabled...
Think about it the other way. They could stop you from accessing any feature which isn't 100% working.
Remember programming isn't as simple as - I'll just fix this and get it working perfectly.

Far from it. The Developer Options are meant to assist app development on the device. There is a warning you upfront that turning on these options may cause issues and they're turned off by default. What's the point in turning these on and then complaining something broke!?
Much as we'd like it at least in this case, can't have your cake and eat it too

Well first of all, i don't know if this works for other android phones but it fixed bugs on my S4 lollipop version.
Which i believe it will do because most of android have developer mode and have the "do not keep activities" on settings.
Bugs/problems are:
Keyboard auto hide while typing
Apps hangs then closes anytime
Phone automatically goes back to home then wallpaper changes on its default wallpaper.
••if you're having the same problem or have some if these problems, you can try this••
Steps :
1. Go to settings > more > developer option
(If you dont have "developer option". Go to Settings > more > About device. Look for "Build number" and tap it 12 times.
2. Swipe down and find "Do not keep activities".
3. Enable/Check it.
Done! Please leave a reply if it works on your phone. Thanks

"Do not keep activities" means that, every time you leave an app, it will close it. This means that the app won't stay in the cache.

It's called multitasking. Multitasking means doing X different things at the same time. This also implies that the apps do not close once you switch to another. Otherwise it's just exiting and entering a different app.
The S4 should be able to run a several apps at the same time without running out of memory, without killing them or without them crashing.
Hearing the various bugs about the Samsung lollipop, I say it's better to switch to AOSP roms. At least you also get good performance from them. Unlike the Touchwiz roms..

yes. i'm kinda worried about this problem. i can't even use my phone properly. bug shows up again, and it means procedures i mentioned above doesn't really work. I will just downgrade it to kitkat again. BTW, my imei turns 0000/01 and doesn't have network . do you know how to fix this without using z3x box?

So maybe a little time will cure it????
My Stuff has nothing in it and I can't add it!
I use PushBullet anyway, does the same thing.

Is there a View My Stuff link inside My stuff?
Just spent 45 mins on the phone with moto. Still couldn't figure it out.
Looks like I'm just going to return to Amazon. Then reorder through moto.
Can't believe they can't figure this out.

Hi,
Don't believe it's the phone. It's a problem within the app itself.
An update with a fix is all it needs. I hope!!!!

I sideload a lot of apps, and an annoying kwirk that I've found is that unknown sources does not stay enabled permanently. Everytime I attempt to install an app from unknown sources, I have to hop into settings and recheck unknown sources.
Yes, I do uncheck "this install only"

I think it's a definitely a big, because there is an option to uncheck "for this install only", however even if you do, it still reverts it back. So definitely a bug.
Yes it's annoying... But today when I try to sideload a app.. It prompt to enable unknown sources and takes to settings menu, here don't check the box rather click the Unknown sources it will prompt you a usual warning and below warning there is a check box as 'allow this instalation only' un check it and click ok...
It will stay forever
Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Actually, it seems to stay for a set period of time, possibly until the phone is locked, or about 10 minutes, not 100% sure, but I sideloaded about 40 humblebundle apps over the course of 2 hours yesterday, and that dialog came back between every sideloading session. I could do several at a time, but when i locked, and went off to do other things, returning to sideload more would result in the same dialog again. Checking the box made the dialog appear every time i tried to sideload. This doesn't appear to be a bug, it appears to be a security feature that has no option for removal.
I've got a bunch of packages frozen with Package Disabler Pro and my unknown sources is sticking. Verizon, US model.
I pulled the XML file in that thread and it freezes all kinds of Sammy bloat, including Knox, so one or a combination is flipping that back.
I'm taking updates as they come.

Noticed some settings in developer options not sticking either. Just took latest VZW update so maybe that'll fix it!
Try to uninstall Samsung Pay and the framework. I did it on my S7 Edge and it fixes this problem.
Hence, I opt not to use S.Pay.
